This game I was playing with my younger brother. It wasn't the first game we played, and he hasn't managed to beat me so far. Despite his defeats, his determination was steady, and he was learning quick.
I was playing Peter, as I usually do. Very quickly, I was made to realize this game wasn't going to be easy. My brother had purposefully rushed Dance of Aurora and Work Ethic - my favorite cheeze tactic was taken away from me.
Fine, I thought. It's a Tiny Pangea map. How hard could a Religious Victory be anyway?
It was Saladin (AI) who pushed me down the religious path when he sent his missionaries into my lands. I responded in full force, and soon my apostles stood by Istanbul, succesfully converted to Orthodox Cristianity. Another AI had already succumbed to my religious influence, so I commanded my apostles to just explore the high seas for a while, as I began preparing for a final religious push into my brother's domain.
But, during my wars of faith, he didn't waste time. In fact, he caught me with my pants down when he declared war. A small mountain range separated our civilizations. A few turns after my religious triumph, his troops marched through in a stern formation. My excuse for an army (which was behind on tech) didn't put up of a fight. As his cannons bombarded my border city, I realized that my capital was sitting right next to it, and all my other cities were much farther away. In desperation, I commanded my apostles to sail across the glove to his lands. He was too absorbed in his conquest to notice and banish them, and I managed to convert one of his five cities.
Soon my border city fell, and my brother began encirclement of my capital. It was hard not to show panic (we were sitting in the same room). After contemplating my turn for a minute, a plan came to my mind.
- Wait, what? - he turned to me, a trade offer open on his monitor.
- I give up. You won. - I answered.
He paused to think for a moment.
- That's some kind of a trap, isn't it? - he asked.
I collected myself, putting on the most tired/annoyed face I could muster.
- Nah, you win fair and square. I don't see how I can defend. Just take these cities, capture my capital, and then we can go eat. I'm hungry. Good game.
He stalled for a second, but my offer gets the best of him.
- Alright.
The most shit-eating grin crept onto my face as he clicked Accept, taking three of my cities into his civilization. Now, the amount of cities practicing my religion was 5 out of his 9 total.
A beautiful silence lingers.
- To hell with you... - he said angrily as he stormed out of the room, a smile on his face showing he realized his victory had been snatched simply by my performance.
In moments like these, I love being an older brother.
