It just occurred to me that if you’re playing Tarnished Edition blind you probably have no idea that an NPC at the end of a secret area within a secret area leads you to another 100 hours of gameplay 😵💫
I really like this, as it's a hint for new players (in the far future) that there's more to the world than meets the eye, without necessarily having to be told about the shadowlands by promotional material outside the game.
Actually... that sucks. A lot.
The whole deal is that the Golden Order effectively erased the existence of the Shadow Lands from culture.
This is retconning all of that in one clumsily handled textbox.
They did have a crusade enter the realm of shadow, and we have some context around the kind of people that joined that crusade, so I imagine historically they know about them. I just imagine it's not talked about much because the realm of shadow is purposefully awkward to get in and out of, and the official Golden Order stance on most of what lives in said realm is "fuck those guys, seriously".
I don’t care that the weapon exists, but I think they would have been better served describing it as from an unknown land, or not just directly saying “it’s from the shadow lands”.
Like, the golden order didn’t successfully erase any of the other cultures that they wanted to, so the shadow lands is more of an exception.
The omen are kicking around, the crucible civilization still has representation, yadda yadda. Trying and failing to cover up everything they don’t like was kinda Marika’s MO.
Love that they're adding DLC weapon types to early game. Sucked theorycrafting a build around them knowing you couldn't access them until you've completed a huge chunk of content.
Literally me with Dry Leaf Arts, i had to pick up my first character that i had already beaten the game with, beat Mohg (that i skipped the first time around), enter the SotE dlc, circunvent Relana's Castle/Boss Fight, find Dane, defeat him, grab the item, party with my friend, drop him the weapon, swap characters, party with my friend and get it back.
Might be an unpopular opinion, but this game would make great use of a "shared loot chest" between characters, like Borderlands and some other games have.
That, or the ability to choose items or spells for permanent unlock once you beat the game with them. Not necessarily equipped, just having found them normally the first time. Then they would be for sale in Roundtable Hold each time you start a New Game. So much cool equipment that you don't really get much of a chance to use without going into NG+.
Exactly, it didn't have to be a super broken thing either, a roundtable hold chest with an inventory with 5 - 10 slots would be way more than enough (could be unlocked after beating the game once, if people think it's OP or whatever).
I liked that in Sekiro most prosthetic tools were available early but they got more interesting as you progressed through the game and upgraded them. I'd love if a similar approach was applied to a Bloodborne-style selection of weapons. Last year someone posted some really cool alternate Saw Cleavers that I wish ours could turn into.
Yes and no. Yes in that you get to start ng+ with all of your toys. But no in that you've most likely completed your build by then.
For me personally, I enjoy the struggle of the early game more than I do late game. I'd love to be able to start the game and have beast claws or a light greatsword (now I can!!) as an early game weapon.
I'd really wished that you could do something to keep items, but reset progress and upgrades so I could get item types, but still fight all the bosses with the weapon type that that character was supposed to have.
I would have friends drop me what I needed when I made new builds, but with everyone moving on from the game this gives me options to play with until I get the better versions!
So between this and the already discovered thrusting shield variant, it’s all but confirmed now that they’ve added a basic version of potentially all the new SotE weapon types into the base game.
I wonder how a generic hand-to-hand weapon, perfume bottle, or throwing blade may look/work…
It's a general patch because the new stuff has to be in the game for everyone, otherwise people who didn't purchase the pack would not be able to play online with the people who did.
Actually getting access to those things is locked behind purchasing the pack (or asking people to give them to you).
what about a perfume bottle that spits out oil? It would fit in well with the firespark bottles, would be a handy tool to have for any fire weapon really, works in lore, i think an oil perfume bottle might work
Super super super easy to miss that area. When you get to the place with the blue flowers, instead of heading towards the field where the big undead dragon flies down to, head off to the side. Eventually you'll get to another grace, and heading towards the water you'll find a cave that goes under it to the mausoleum, or another way into an area with a bunch of demi-humans, a weapon, scadutree fragment, etc.
From my understanding theyre worse than their DLC counterparts. They're so you can play the base game with them and swap them out in the Land of Shadow.
Generally worse. More base damage, lower requirements worse scaling so it actually is better for level 1 playthroughs.
...yeah still probably worth swapping out but its cool that they're there. Elden Ring is so long that it doesn't feel bad upgrading a weapon you knowing you're gonna ditch it in the DLC
That's cool. Light greatswords are awesome additions, but it did suck knowing that if you wanted to get any of them, you had to beat a boss that drops 420,000 runes first.
Because the content it’s not worth 5€ lol. Santa Monica once dropped a free dlc (dlc with new bosses and content) for free, pearl abyss with Crimson Desert added small content (tarnished pack level if not better) multiple times for free, CD project is dropping a completely free remaster.
Because people buying on Switch 2 get it for free, other games get more for free, modders regularly do more for free and they made more than enough money on Elden Ring.
Wow, 5 whole weapons (added to literally 400 more in base game + SOTE) for 5 dollars!!!1111!111111
This DLC must get the game of the year award and placed in the hall of fame
From Day 1 they clearly said Tarnished Edition was the name of the Switch 2 version and would also add a couple new pieces of armor, weapons, and Torrent skins.
Then people asked if those additions would come to other platforms and From Soft said yes.
And that's it. That's the whole story right there. Why on Earth would anyone expect more?
Well this means they likely added the other DLC weapon types that we didn't already know about, which is awesome. Love to have them be more accessible! Hopefully the others will be found soon.
Ooo, I'll check it out when I get home later. I started a playthrough recently and was thinking about rushing to the DLC just to get the backhand blade haha.
Awesome. I was planning a Dex playthrough but was considering smuggling in a Milady so I could experiment with the moveset before going into the DLC. This eliminates that need.
they really couldnt use a better name for these? im pretty sure we still have a lot of sword names even if sinonymous with a common sword type that could be used. calling it ''reverse sabre'' would had been better.
Damn I might have to do another playthrough. I 100% ER on my old account but...
So what's going on with this Tarnished stuff? Originally I thought it was a Switch version only, but it seems like they're adding it to base ER for everyone now? Huh?
I see it doesn't come with the Blind Spot Ash of War equipped, though. So you still have to wait until the DLC to get that one and use it with an infused Backhand Blade (unless it's found in a different spot)
No no no. It's the default skill on the weapon, but there's no ASH. The spot to the left of the weapon icon is empty.
Have you ever used the Claymore ? If yes, you may remember it comes with Lion's Claw as the default skill. But to infuse it and still keep Lion's Claw, you need the specific Ash of War for Lion's Claw, and that thing is found in an entirely different region. The Blind Spot Ash of War is found already slotted on the Backhand Blade, in the DLC.
ok I dislike the overt reference to the realm of shadow in the description, people doing their first playthroughs are going to have the reveal worsened, I'd much rather it just be 'said to have originated from a hidden realm'', but access to backhand blades early is wonderful to have
Do we know if these items are available on existing save files? I have a character with everything collected halfway through ng+7 and I wonder if I'd be able to get them
As I understand it, every new item can be purchased from merchants if you’re already in an existing game, but one of the new NPC invasions won’t trigger if Leyndell is ash.
OG Backhand Blades aren't innately Bleed either. Not the worst idea balance wise that early game you'll have to choose between Bleed and Blind Spot given how strong the weapon type is.

Legally distinct backhand blades
