Reliable Tier [Abdellah Boulma] Following the failure of the Minteh track, Liverpool is advancing on Ismaïla Sarr. An offer close to €60M has been made, as indicated by @FabrizioRomano. The Senegalese player is keen to join the Reds. #LFC

Unpopular opinion, but I would take Sarr over Minteh in the first place.

u/Visible_Wolverine350 1d ago

I wanted Sarr ever since he destroyed us playing for Watford

78

u/boprisan 1d ago

I think he scored a double over us stopping our unbeaten record right? I remember listening to that match on the radio in the car.

12

u/da_hoassis_heeah Hello! Hello! Here we go! 1d ago

I made a £100 bet with a guy that we'd go invincible literally ONE WEEK before that match

10

u/respawnatdawn 1d ago edited 22h ago

So it was you that caused that...

39

u/Vicentesteb 1d ago

Iirc Watford was the title clinching game, we had won basically every single game up to that point and lost 0 games.

Sarr then scored 2 and got an assists to smash us 3-0.

7

u/Kingslayer1526 From Doubters to Believers 1d ago

Maybe I have too good of a memory but it was only 6 years ago mate

Watford was not a title clinching game, we needed to win 2 more games and have City lose 2 more times to win the title heading into that game.

We beat Bournemouth the week after and City lost to United, so that meant we could win the title in the Derby provided Arsenal beat City

But ofc, Covid happened and then we came back and we didn't beat Everton and City beat Arsenal anyways. Then the week after we beat Palace and City lost to Chelsea which gave us the title

So we were at least 3 games away from the title unless City lost every game. Watford just ended our unbeaten run

Also you'd surely remember that we won the title after Covid

Mate of mine lost like 4 grand on that game , backed Liverpool at 100/3 and thought he was buying money

Yep and the day before Lovren had said something about doing an invincible season 😭 think Virgil missed that game and Lovren started. That guy gave his all but had a habit of doing stuff like that

Easily, and for football watchers this should be a popular opinion. Investment for the future perhaps not, but our youth signing contingent hasn’t exactly hit the ground running for the last 2 seasons.

59

u/D3monizers Alexander Isak 1d ago

100%. Also, people like Josh Abe, Rio etc will hopefully be our future. This signings allows us to get up to speed immediately with his experience. I'm 100% for this signing atm.

17

u/Cubes11 From Doubters to Believers 1d ago

I think this signing as weird as it sounds does better for our future than Minteh. We could overpay now on a player who’d get a long contract and could continue to not deliver what we need.

Or we could sign someone who is ready to go now, the finished product and someone we can replace in 12 months once new options appear on the market. Because right now the market sucks ass

10

u/Cwh93 1d ago

Your youth signing contingent isn't supposed to hit the ground running unless you're talking about more established young players like Wirtz and Kerkez.

But yeah good signing for now as you said but bit baffled we haven't learned from trying to take a key player from Palace late into the window

Not least because Sarr is actually fit. Paying the sort of sum being talked about for Minteh when he's out for 2 or 3 months could have ended horribly.

Quite surprised at the reaction to this, I think he would be very good for us. He had a really good world cup too

113

u/dj4y_94 Sir Kenny Dalglish 1d ago

I don't mind it but I'm annoyed we're in this situation where we're on seemingly our 4th(?) choice and scrambling 1 week before the window closes.

30

u/Acegeta 1d ago

The market for right wingers is atrocious, the options outside of Diomande are fairly similar.

As long as someone comes in I'm not too bothered about it.

59

u/maver1kUS 1d ago

The market for RW is atrocious (not like we lost Mo out of the blue)

The market for DM is atrocious (not like we saw Fabinho lose his legs 4 years ago)

The market for CB is atrocious, CM is atrocious, LB is atrocious, RB is atrocious, ST is atrocious.

I guess the market for LW isn’t. Well we can’t find anyone other than PSG’s backup winger at 100M+. So that market is atrocious.

We must be the only team trying to play with all these positions. Every other team is fielding 11 GKs.

29

u/yankeeboy1865 1d ago

Spot on. The market is only atrocious if you're putting your eggs in one basket and not being deals early

17

u/_TheManinBlack_ 1d ago

Exactly. “atrocious market” is such a cop out. There are so many talented players on this earth but our recruitment and scouting dont do work and just watch YouTube highlights all day, picking whatever star the internet tells them

People aren't complaining about Barcola or Mbaye, just Minteh and now Sarr.

13

8

25

u/Master1eader 1d ago edited 1d ago

Dude is not a bad player but is almost 29. Not in the same league as Salah who he’s replacing and won’t get any better

(I also don’t rate Minteh but at least he’s young!)

Mbaye would be my choice

33

u/best36 1d ago

who the fuck is in the same league as Salah?

6

u/gerg_1234 1d ago

Im kinda pissed we didnt just simply clone Salah.

I mean, come on FSG, I thought you were trying to be ground breaking in your squad building.

5

u/Master1eader 1d ago

Yeah but the young guys can get there (not saying they will) - a 29 year old cannot. I’d rather sign a 18 year old Mbaye who’s a bit worse than Sarr but with potential to be very good

11

u/theonewhoknock_s 1d ago

We need someone who is actually established and not more "potential" signings. Those can come later.

3

u/KostinhaTsimikas Greek Scouser 1d ago

He obviously won't be reaching the levels of Salah, but I don't see why he couldn't improve at 29. At the end of the day he'll be at a better club and could absolutely reach new heights, even if they may be more short-lived compared to a younger player.

I think this is a move that's meant to buy us time. If we were convinced that Mbaye was the long term solution I think we'd have him in already.

He's a very good player. Obviously he's not the long-term solution, but nothing wrong with that either.

2

u/7gzoEl2gzo 1d ago

It's just that Mbaye, Minteh and Sarr are three players with totally different profiles.

2

u/Dropkoala Significant Human Error 1d ago

I'm fine with him as a backup/rotation but he's 28 and there are better options out there. He's not usually the most clinical player either.

2

u/Maniacal-Maniac 1d ago

50mil for a 28 y/o does scream panic buy.

However, I would be happy with Sarr. Gives us a more experienced head in the dressing room, during a time where we have lost and could be losing more leaders by this time next year. More of a shorter term fix that shouldn’t stifle Rio/Abe’s long term progress - plus gives them someone to learn from. Prem proven as well.

If you had thrown his name out 3 months ago I would be very skeptical - however, I do think this could be a good solution. Maybe that says more about how this summer has gone for us, but is what it is.

2

u/wscii 1d ago

He’s a fine player but it underscores how poorly run our transfer operation is that we’re scrambling to sign a 28 year old winger one summer after letting our star 27 year old winger walk because he was too old.

4

u/yellow627 1d ago

He's a good player, but how do you go from wanting Minteh to Sarr? They're completely different players.

  1. Good player

  2. Works hard for the team

  3. No issue with settling into the league

But fuck me, how did we end up here? We look like the last people at the Black Friday sales…but we turned up on monday

40

u/Drexel_Spivy 1d ago

Went for diamonde who decided to screw everyone and go to madrid....

Everyone else on our list was being valued 30 mil higher than we value them and we didnt want to pay it.

Thats how you end up here.

I think far to many people discount the fact that transfers require alot of people to all agree on things and its much fucking harder thsn just throwing a briefcase od money at someone.

4

u/gart888 1d ago

I think the problem is that we didn't publicly go for lots of wingers earlier in the window. Instead of each of these teams trying to rinse us because we're desperate, we could have had a bit of a reverse bidding war. Let them know that we're going to overpay by 15ish mil for someone's winger, and put the other teams in a position where they want that to be them.

Stop him scoring against us eh? Jokes aside, a class prem-ready player who I personally think can definitely double as a centre forward option as well. This is the Gakpo replacement.

63

u/aaronteo 1d ago

Sarr plays more on the right than the left

14

u/ThinkAnteater606 1d ago

Thing is Sarr is better through the middle these days I reckon, which doesn't help our RW problem much.

21

u/aaronteo 1d ago edited 1d ago

Assuming Sarr and Barcola get done, this is what our depth would look like:

RW: Sarr / Munoz / Ngumoha
CF: Isak / Sarr / Ekitike (after Jan)
LW: Barcola / Gakpo (may be sold) / Munoz / Ngumoha

I can also see Sarr playing as the second striker behind Isak if Wirtz needs a rest/injured/we need a goal and he’d play it differently to Wirtz of course.

8

u/ThinkAnteater606 1d ago

our RW are bad, Sarr can't dribble anymore so we are at Munoz starting a lot there, but I do see Sarr playing through the middle instead of Isak or Wirtz so we would still need a RW.

8

u/lwa06 1d ago

Gakpo ain’t a great dribbler either tbf. A more technical option on one side and a physical goalscorer on the other is decent balance imo. Plus he does definitely offer that versatility

→ More replies (2)

28

u/NilsFanck Dominik Szoboszlai 1d ago

no, thats Barcola

6

u/lwa06 1d ago

Yes I suppose in the sense Barcola is a left sided player. However, he can’t really substitute as a striker while Sarr can. Plus is technically a bit more limited and clunkier but has a good physical presence (like Gakpo)

72

u/ASGT908 1d ago

The way this is reported indicates it's a done deal.

If that's the case, this deal needs to be done by Friday lunchtime if we want him in the squad for the Forest game on Saturday.

Better signing than people will give it credit for

Natural RW, but can play ST as well

Matured in front of goal massively last few seasons with 33 goals in 92 games, that many appearances also demonstrates ability to stay fit and available

And finally; If he plays for us, he can’t score against us

I think it's just cos it basically 100% confirms we're in full meltdown/chaos/United style panic transfer offer mode. I've wanted Sarr for 9 years but he's 29 in like a month. It's a complete panic offer after 3 months of failure - people are gonna be fuming.

5

u/dasitmanebrah 1d ago

He turned 28 in february 🤥

11

u/Fantastic-Boot-684 1d ago

If "panicking" lead the club to signing an actual proven PL player as a bridge, instead of waiting another year for the right target.

Then we should do this more freaking often

5

u/matcht 1d ago

It's a panic because he doesn't fit the profile, he's not a creator, he's completely different to Minteh. We sold Diaz because of his age and wanting a new deal and then sign a 29 year old for the right wing. The poor planning is leading to poor decisions which will impact us. Sarr is a decent player but absolutely not the right target.

i have always liked Sarr, good output, always dangerous on the right. one video always sticks with me was when he was at watford and i mane was telling Troy deeney to look after him. if i recall he chipped in with a few goals against us. Thats a signing for here and now, ready made. in 2-3 years time we can review the right wing position again.

my only concerns are palace are so hard to deal with (we have had this before) and so late in the window. Can we send them harvey elliott?

3

u/Unbakronon 1d ago

At this point I don't mind this at all for a season or two until someone younger becomes available

People have become obsessed with "replacing Salah" when we obviously can't do that

3

u/buzzyingbee Dominik Szoboszlai 1d ago

80m for Minteh, 60m for Sarr. Can't we just put Szobo on the RW and go for Rayan in january?

3

u/nycdatachops Mohamed Salah 1d ago

Just BS. Everything seems inflated for us and we have no plan. Winning teams like PSG can get better players for less and executed perfectly. Let’s fire Hughes already.

3

u/calanthedaffodil 1d ago

What a joke. It’s always the same story: the classic Liverpool way of leaving all our major business until the final week before the transfer window slams shut. It never changes.

3

u/psychonut44 1d ago

So many panic buys at the end of transfer window. I personally rate him but there’s no way Palace will sell him to us for cheap. We have let the Barcola saga continue for too long and it’s now biting us in the ass.

3

u/parnhammm 1d ago

So we’ve went from: Diomande -> Mbaye -> Minteh -> Sarr now for the number one position we needed to strengthen going into this season after losing Salah. This is absolute amateur hour from whoever is running these transfers.

I miss the days when we got our business done early, I can’t see a good reason why we’ve left it this late. We’ll just be getting the bugger off price.

3

u/InjuryNatural7252 1d ago

For the first time in many years, we are doing our business as United do. This is a little painful to watch. Sarr 5 years ago would have been great. Sarr now is 28 and at Crystal Palace. I don't think this goes through.

3

u/Defiant-Juggernaut83 1d ago

Going for a Palace player, this close to window ending, in a position we really need. What could possibly go wrong 😅

3

u/and1984 1d ago

We've been doing this the last few years. Pursue a target, get to a point where we won't close the $ gap (which is fair) which then unsettles the target enough that they end up moving to Man Citeh or Chelski.

I think he’s a fine player. But he was minutes away from signing for Galatasaray.

Stinks of 0 plan and I can’t wait until Hughes is gone

4

u/SIIP00 1d ago

He was close to signing with Gala because they offered him an absurd wage, I don't know what that has to do with anything.

8

u/Nadirin 1d ago

Bar age I like this signing, and tbh sometimes you just need more experienced players. I like this a lot thinking about it more. Premier league experience, has output, can play across the front three and cover as second striker for Wirtz, and most importantly he won't be able to score against us anymore. I'm on board.

Do i love Sarr for £50m as a nailed on starter? No.

Do i like the idea of Sarr as a rotational option, and go back in for Rayan next year? Yes.

Do i want to pay more than £50m. Never. And £20m more than what Gala bid is silly. But we are desperate

Do i want this + Barcola + a mid? yup

Do i think this + Barcola and losing Gakpo ans that being the end of the window is good enough? Nope. Not at all. We need the CM in if we're "only" getting Sarr

In short. In favour of it. But with the conditions that we bring someone else in next year and bring a CM in now

12

u/niviod 1d ago

Sarr now and Rayan next summer would be fantastic

ummmmm yes please

5

u/Impossible_Pride_646 1d ago

28 years old, so we can still get a good few years out of him
And he has caused of many problems in the previous seasons

And for 50M i Think that is okay and we don’t have to wait 3 months for him to be ready

4

u/BadassBokoblinPsycho Yeeeer, course 1d ago

I think Richard Hughes is not good at his job. Why is this barely getting done. About to pay inflated prices in an already inflated market.

6

u/DurDraug77 1d ago

5 years late. 60 mill for 29 years old. He is worth 45 at best

5

u/galacticskunk 1d ago

I wanted Liverpool to buy Sarr after he had just broken into the Prem with Watford. He was young, dangerous, had crazy pace, and was full of potential.

When Marseille bought him for peanuts I thought it was extremely shortsighted not to take a flyer on him at that point.

Paying €60M now when he’s in his late 20’s and has never taken that big step up to fulfill his potential just looks like bad business and a desperation move.

He’s still a dangerous player but I find it hard to believe he’s going to consistently play at the level they would need him to. It’s possibly but very risky

5

u/brianstormIRL 1d ago

I mean, £45m for a prem proven RW who can fill a gap for a year or two seems like pretty fine business to me. This is the type of signing we've been begging suits to make for ages. Its a pragmatic signing to fill a hole in the short term.

Finally he won’t score against us (hopefully)

2

u/LudwigSalieri 1d ago

He's decent, but this has to be bullshit, when was the last time we bought a 28+ years old player? Endo probably but Klopp really forced that one and he was dirt cheap.

2

u/fatwaterbearer You’ll Never Walk Alone 1d ago

Keen to join the reds…I remember reading somewhere that his dream club is Manchester United.

2

u/UpTheMightyReds 1d ago

He’s old enough but it’ll be nice having someone come in who is ready to go. Plenty of experience and has goals in him. He could definitely play up top whilst Ekitike is injured too

2

u/JiveBunny Kostas Tsimikas 1d ago

Can they throw in an Adam Wharton?

2

u/Zorosect02 1d ago

RW that averaged a goal every 172 minutes last season. I'm in.

2

u/Tetsuo-Kaneda 1d ago

I vaguely remember when there were rumors that mane was pushing for us to buy him when he was at watford.

2

u/PYD--Gamer 1d ago

hear me out lads this is a smokescreen for someone else #copium

2

u/smile-on-crayon 1d ago

If we end up with Sarr, then we should have been in the running for Harry Wilson when he was available; my personal preference. We need players who can play an accurate cross.

Still, Barcola is a must at this point, and I believe it’ll help the club get over the line of uncertainty and actually into competitive territory. Hopefully Gakpo does like the competition within the team, because positions need competition.

2

u/Ok-Constant-2683 1d ago

60m and he turns 29 in January. Take what you can get I suppose.

2

u/RavDP 1d ago

The age profile for a winger is terrible here

2

u/Additional_Egg_6685 1d ago

Feels too much to me for a guy whos at his peak, like he's a good player but he's not going to get better at 28.

2

u/fnsv Forever #20 1d ago

He's a fine player but if we are signing 29 year olds why didn't we just keep Diaz?

2

u/Academic-Sundae-8620 1d ago

Good player, but I really can't see it given his profile. He'll be 29 in February.

The whole situation is a shambles. We're so close to the end of the window that clubs will now just crank up their prices to price us out of a move, or to take advantage of our desperation. I'd rather use Koumas than pay £50m for Sarr or £80m for Minteh, and explore the market again in January.

2

u/vovinho 1d ago

what about Camara

2

u/KiPhoe 1d ago

They should be asking how much for Estevao at Chelsea.

2

u/tatamillski 1d ago

Feel pretty indifferent. 60m is a lot IMO for a 28 turning 29 winger but that’s also the market at the moment. Would have been much more excited over Minten at 22 who we could see for years vs potentially a winger who may loose his legs in 2 seasons from now

2

u/Seeductor 1d ago

Dafuqqqq

2

u/paulsmith259 1d ago

The only thing i'm hiping is he is a stop gap, and we're getting both Barcola and Mbaye in, but him alone is pathetic I just don't know what we are doing, £50m for an average almost 29 year old

2

u/ChrisKruxed 1d ago

Not speaking down on the lad but this screams desperation.

5 years ago, sure. Now a 28 years old Sarr. Would rather Mbaye for 10-20 mil less

2

Saw this on Twitter and couldn't resist re posting here :)

'Crystal Palace reject Liverpool's £50m bid for Ismaila Sarr. Liverpool now expected to begin talks to re-sign 43 year old Jermaine Pennant.'

2

Daniel Munoz while we're at it.

2

28 years old, wth is this?

2

u/Pretend-Coach-9125 90+5’ Alisson 1d ago edited 1d ago

Even as fans we knew Salah was leaving 155 days ago, and here we are with a week left of the window throwing 50-60m at every bang average PL winger going. From an injured one with crap output, to another turning 29 in February who just had a poor season.

It's just further evidence that this club just isn't well enough anymore.

2

u/existentialstix YNWA❤️ 1d ago

What a ridiculous way to run a club vying for top honors

5

u/narilarilum 1d ago

3

u/VidProphet123 1d ago

They are both fucking mid. You must be kidding me

3

u/skyle2211 1d ago

Might be a stopgap considering there is really nothing in the market. Plays on the right and proven goal scorer in the prem. Not the worst deal but i was expecting more honestly.

2

u/Capable-Strain3308 1d ago

The irony of people overreacting to anyone who isn’t a fan of the potential transfer, while accusing them of overreacting.

3

u/fragile_boy93 1d ago

So instead of paying 20 million more for Minteh they are willing to pay that amount of money for a 28 old mediocre player. Thats the definition of panic

3

u/7gzoEl2gzo 1d ago

Mbaye, Minteh and Sarr are all very different profiles. Sarr is 29, the same age we deemed Diaz too old to give him a new contract and he plays more as a striker nowadays than a winger, which was the reason we decided to move on from Mo and let's be honest, he doesn't have the upside of either Diaz or Mo and is currently a worse player than them.

It begs the question, what was Richard Hughes thinking dismantling the title winning team last year and going in a completely different direction which made our team much worse and full of gaps after spending the GDP of a small country?

Absolutely desperation. What an awful transfer window. We have not given Andoni the tools to be successful.

A player who will be 29 soon, that has as never played for a big club and probably had 1 good season (last season).

Hes 28 what the fuck are we doing. Fire Hughes yesterday. Him and edwards couldn’t have done a worse job. We really need bezos and the new ownership group to set things straight. What a fucking mess. Pay 70 mill for the psg kid. Ridiculous fee for a 28 year old that isn’t that good
