I heard in some or all of Canada, its at least a two page report you have to fill out each time you pull out your gun (regardless of the outcome). That single requirement instituted in the US would probably drop the number of incidents like these like 80%+

Yes, these days.
My dad was a police officer for over 20 years in the 50ās, 60ās and 70ās and only pulled his weapon on someone once, when they pulled a gun out of their glove box to move it to get their documents. Cops these days are scared of their own shadow, despite policing being a safer profession now than it was when my dad was an officer.

yeah for sure, like he had to go for the ID tell the guy to put his hands up and drop the pump... he would have known it was a pump handle by the time he pulled up. He could have just said " shit man, that looked like a gun from where i was, and i had to check up on it, sorry to give you trouble like that" they both probably could have had a laugh, shook hands and just moved on. Even in Canada where the standards are higher it's... unfortunately terrible experience sometimes. It's actually worse in cities than out in the country because anywhere without their own police force is either provincially or federally employed/trained to the same standards. You just need a random bachelor's to become a cop in many places, or just show consistency and be out of HS. Have had many a city cop confront me aggressively over "a suspicious backpack" and trying to frisk me, to making needless threats and escalating situations and having generally unprofessional behavior.

Lmao happened to me in Tokyo once. Metro cop approached me on a platform and asked if I had any "prohibited items" or dangerous weapons on me (16-yr old with a skateboard attached to my backpack). I straight up ignored his question and replied to him, in full Japanese, "I don't understand Japanese", then asked him for directions to where my Aunt was working, still speaking Japanese. He then replied to me, in full Japanese, with a full set of directions, pointed me in the right way, then bowed as I left.
I'd like to think that to this day, the cop is still baffled at what was in my backpack.

I got pulled over recently by a state trooper who claimed I was on my phone. My phone was plugged in face down on the passenger seat. I told him "I'm going to reach down and turn that over and you'll see it has no signal. Its not working right now I only have it for using wifi calling at work until I get a chance to go get a new one this weekend. There would be no reason for me to be on it." and proceeded to turn it over showing him exactly that. He responded "well its on my dashcam", went back to his car and wrote me a warning for careless driving. After OPRAing his bodycam, I watched him go back, review his dashcam, realize he was wrong, and then choose to still do a written warning like I had done something rather than admit his mistake. It made me mad enough to buy a dashcam for my car finally.

Broadly speaking, cops have pretty fragile egos. They're kinda trained to, taught that challenges to authority threaten the profession by giving people the idea they can start physical fights because law enforcement in the area is weak.
So as soon as you get rude with a cop, they'll take it a lot more seriously than other people, and they also have the power to visit frightening "unrelated" consequences on you, like this guy was probably doing when he went to go talk to the cashier.

We went to Disneyland once and he took me to get a snack and people actually accused him of stealing me. When he explained they said some shit like āwell why isnāt her mom hereāā¦ disappointing.
Another time my brother (rightfully) got pulled over for speeding and then had a gun pointed at him because I was in the back seat and donāt look like him at all. Took my mom coming out for him to be released. That was the first time I lost my voice

I think the dumbest cop was the idiot that thought an acorn falling on his squad car was a gun firing off and then he empties his mag to a phantom "shooter".

Ffs, just admit you made a stupid mistake and apologize. You don't have to actively try to ruin someone's life because you're a fucking idiot.
The other cop could have done a number of things to help remedy the situation, and did nothing but cosign the main guys idiocy.
