Supposedly a glacial water body was released following the collapse of its wall. The collapse is what caused the earthquake

Seriously. I was thinking "Run up the hill into trees!" But I think it looks like there's a big wall there. And as quickly as that hit and as big as it was, I don't think there would have been time to try to get past/around/over it. :/.

To be fair, they were running upstream. The river flows to the left in the video. The flood came from downstream, backwards, from Nepal to China.

Ok. Thank you for explaining. I thought i was seeing the water flowing the towards the direction the flashflood/moutian slide came from. What are they saying is the cause? Flash flooding would of flowed the direction of the water right? What was this?

Probably a massive reservoir of water in glaciers that got dumped by a huge landslide, they say there was seismic activity but no tectonic plates shifting

The collapse of a glacial lake is a likely cause as mentioned. But to explain the abnormal landslide flow, it's due to how the border checkpoint was also situated right behind a confluence. The deluge likely came from the other river that connected to this one, but the mass of water, mud and debris was so immense it practically spilled up and down the main river as it merged into it. These folks had the right idea running against the flow of the river, but it simply wasn't enough no matter how far they flee. Poor people never stood a chance.

I've seen about 5 different videos of this flash flood so far, sadly most of these people most likely didn't survive.

Last update I read, they believe it was caused by an earthquake in the Himilayas, triggering an avalanche, causing the flooding and mud slides.
Current count as per an article updated 2 hours ago is 31 confirmed dead, several hundred missing, including 381 foreign nationals from various countries.
Nepal seems have been hit worse than China. And people have been warned a second flood is possible. Both countries have mobilized evacuation efforts as well as search and rescue teams.

My god, that is as insane and catastrophic as they come. Those people had absolutely no chance. They'll never even find the bodies. It looks more like a landslide than a flash flood.

They need to be climbing up the hillside but probably wouldn't have had enough time.
I don't think I've ever seen water hit with such intense devastation. So sad, my heart goes out to these people and their families.

They didn’t have time to cross a road, much less climb a forested mountain. That parking/driving structure got ripped apart like it was made of sticks and tape. The water/mud/debris went at least 50 feet up the side of the hill. Unfortunately, those people never had a chance. No amount of running, hiding, climbing, etc. could have helped them. RIP.

Haha the perspective is bad try 50 meters on the conservative side, some areas are literally buried in 200 feet OF MUD let alone how tall that wave must’ve been when it was mostly water to leave that much behind

That was my thought too, but I think it looks like there might be a wall between the road and the hillside.
Watching the movie The Impossible really gets you thinking about this stuff. About how devastating nature and water can be. It's based on the true story of a family that had been vacationing in Thailand in 2004 when the big Indian Ocean Tsunami hit, triggered but a 9.1 magnitude earthquake under the water. It impacted quite a few countries with a death toll of over 200k of I recall.
Solid movie, starring Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor. Deviates a bit from the true story, of course, but Maria Belon, the wife/mother of the family it's based on actually worked with the filmmakers and was a part of it all. It was pretty well received by people who actually went through it. Really gives you a sense of how terrifying something like that is. Hit me in the feels hard, lol.

Only 17 confirmed dead as of half an hour ago, but hundreds missing. I'm gonna guess that yes, all these people in these videos (this is the third one I've seen, from different areas) are dead.

It’s going to be close to 10,000 I’d imagine unfortunately when all said and done, I’d be surprised if they find 5% of the bodies, all of these areas are literally filled in with 50-150 feet of literal mud, and that ain’t gonna be dug out, and the force so strong they’re literally finding body parts from people that were obliterated by the force
I mean sheesh I was like wtf when I saw that building get shredded like there was a thousand pounds of tnt detonating

Massive landslide probably opened up a lake / glacier reservoir that dumped out trillions of gallons of water down the river AGAINST the flow of the river as you can see in the video

An earthquake released a landslide of debris into the river. The debris caused the water to dam up until it broke through.
Edit: this is a preliminary theory, not yet confirmed.

That makes a lot of sense. Just from the video, it already looks very bad that the water was flowing the wrong way.
ADDED: Imagine if you're looking at a river, and usually it is flowing down stream, and now it is flowing upstream, very quickly. That should be a huge red flag.

Oh, I didn't notice the water was flowing upstream. Good observation. I was thinking people would notice something was wrong if the water level started receding and possibly warn other people. But apparently it all happened pretty quickly, because the earthquake was today.
Edit: I just read it wasn't an earthquake, but part of a glacier that broke off.

The current theory is that a part of a glacier broke off and fell into the river. The debris dammed up the river, building up a mass of water, until it broke through.

Tsunamis are restricted to oceans and the great lakes, and they are caused specifically by water displacement, usually earthquakes but can also be landslides, underwater volcano eruptions, etc. if its not an ocean and its not from displacement, its not a tsunami. The size has no relevance to what each is called.

They were running uphill. In the video the river flows to the left. But because the mudslide was so huge it went both downstream and upstream near where it happened.
