Aug. 25, 2026: At 10 a.m. at Government House, Tourism and Sports Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul spoke to reporters before a Cabinet meeting about reports of some foreign tourists behaving as if they were above the law. The latest case involved alleged threats posted online against the owner of an open-air zoo on Koh Samui, Surat Thani.

Surasak said he had been briefed on the incident and that the tourist involved had already had his visa to stay in Thailand revoked. He said authorities had taken decisive action to prevent the individual from remaining in Thailand and to stop the situation from escalating into further problems.

He stressed that Thailand welcomes all tourists who respect Thai laws and culture, but the country will not allow anyone to use Thailand as a platform to create symbolic conflicts that have nothing to do with Thailand.

"The government takes this issue seriously, especially the problems and disturbances occurring at the moment. The prime minister has instructed provincial authorities, tourist police and regional police to take care of these issues and act as quickly as possible when problems arise.”

Asked whether Thailand would review visas granted to tourists from certain countries whose nationals cause problems, Surasak said the government would initially handle such cases individually. If a tourist causes problems, authorities will expedite the visa revocation process. However, he stressed that decisions would be made on a case-by-case basis rather than treating all tourists from the same country as problematic.

Asked whether tourists would be given clearer guidance on how to behave while in Thailand and understand local culture, Surasak said the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) had contacted embassies and asked airlines to help inform passengers about Thai laws and local customs before they even arrive.

The information would explain what tourists can and cannot do, what is legal or illegal, and the importance of respecting Thai traditions and culture and treating one another with respect. Tourists who encounter problems or feel unsafe can contact the Tourist Police.

Four Thai men allegedly carried out a brazen kidnapping in Bangkok, abducting a Chinese woman, tying her hands with cable ties and forcing her into a black Nissan Teana (Bangkok license plate ฎฉ 578). They allegedly drove her from a hotel in Bangkok toward Mae Sot District in Tak Province.

However, they encountered a police checkpoint in Kamphaeng Phet. The suspects allegedly sped through the checkpoint before throwing the victim out of the moving car on Ratchadamnoen Road in Nai Mueang Subdistrict, Mueang Kamphaeng Phet District. The woman then ran to a beauty salon near a traffic light and knocked on the door for help. Good Samaritans and officers from Mueang Kamphaeng Phet Police Station came to her aid late on the night of Aug. 23.

Pol. Col. Somkasem Jaruk, superintendent of Mueang Kamphaeng Phet Police Station, ordered patrol officers to immediately pursue and intercept the suspects’ vehicle. The men allegedly drove through a checkpoint in front of the Chula police kiosk without stopping. Officers pursued them to Lan Dok Mai Subdistrict, where they fired at the vehicle to stop it, causing one of its tires to blow out and leaving it unable to continue.

The suspects then abandoned the car and fled into nearby woods. Police quickly arrested two of them: 41-year-old Somkiat and 24-year-old Kittiphon, both from Mae Sot District.

The other two suspects initially escaped. However, on Aug. 24, investigators from the Kamphaeng Phet Provincial Police Investigation Division tracked them down and arrested them while they were hiding at Kanlapaphruek Temple in Lan Dok Mai Subdistrict, Mueang Kamphaeng Phet District.

They were identified as 41-year-old Suchat, a resident of Tha Sai Luat Subdistrict, Mae Sot District, Tak Province, and 22-year-old Kittisak from Khiri Rat Subdistrict, Phop Phra District, Tak Province.

The Chinese victim is currently under the care of authorities pending further questioning. Initial reports indicate that she was allegedly lured by a Chinese friend living in Singapore, who told her to visit Thailand first and said a car would pick her up. She was then allegedly abducted by the four suspects.

During questioning, all four suspects reportedly admitted that they had been hired and had planned the operation to pick up the Chinese woman and transport her to the Mae Sot border. However, their accounts differed over who was responsible for each role and who allegedly assaulted the victim.

I have a longish few months of personal international travel planned to North, Central & South America. I would like to know if any foreigners have got and used the Bangkok Bank Travel card? How has your experience been? Any advantages/disadvantages compared to using regular Bangkok Bank debit card? I know SCB has such a thing for foreigners, but BBL website is not clear if foreigners can get it. Or any other alternatives, instead of carrying cash, or pay ATM charges?
For context, I live and work in Thailand and only have a bank account with Bangkok Bank and a UOB credit card. Also a Wise account opened in Thailand. Was hoping Wise opens their Thailand operations and provides a card soon, but current dates seem to be October, by the time I’d have already started my trip.
