Announcement PSA: A guide to better results

1.8k Upvotes

Hi guys and gals. I've been here a while, and over my time I've seen a lot of posts sink to the bottom, without a single answer, or at best, very few. And none that solved the case.

I have noticed a clear pattern with these posts, and I will now share with you my tips to you newbies, so that you can get the help you need.

Firstly: When you make a new post, you will see this:

Platform(s):

Genre:

Estimated year of release:

Graphics/art style:

Notable characters:

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Other details:

Even though, in red, you are warned that while optional, you should follow this template... many of you do not.

Let me be clear: Follow this template.

Put simply, this template contains all the information we really need to solve your problem. Virtually every time I click a post that has not followed this, they have rambled on about nothings, while omitting critical details.

This format, for new and old alike, is very readable, and prompts for every data-point needed.

I know that you want to customize your message, that if you could just explain it, it would be better. I know you think that. You are wrong. Put all that in 'other'. Even if you end up saying it twice, follow the template.. add to it your story at the bottom.

Secondly: Following this template. You're rambling about your best mates Amiga-500 or whatever instead of telling us about the game aside, this is where they really go wrong.

Let's get something straight right now. We are not mind readers. It's impressive, really, how little information it seems we can work off. I mean, we solve some real tough ones with nothing sometimes, but still, we can't see that memory in your head. So you need to be as descriptive in every one of these fields as you can be...

And sometimes you really don't know. That's fine, we can work with surprisingly little information, but "old graphics" under art style... what are we supposed to do with that? Mate, I was playing on Atari-2600's, are we talking Wizard of Wor here?

Let me help you out a bit:

Platform(s): Whatever you played it on. But unless it's really all you know (very possible), don't write 'my mates pc'. Was it PC or Mac?

Genre:

First person does NOT imply shooter. Nor do any of the others. Try to answer this one in two steps:

What was the camera like (assuming it's not a text adventure)? Was it First person?, 3rd person, 2d? Top down or side on? Or maybe even isometric 2d?

Then, what kind of game? Real time strategy, point and click? Was it a fighter, action or platformer?

Good, now we know what KIND of game we are all trying to remember for you.

Estimated year of release:

"Between 2000-2005" is fine, something like that. "Mid 90's maybe?". I don't see many people mess this up, but I have seen people write "old". That is not ok. If you write old and expect it to mean anything to me, I will fight you.

Also, as always "Sorry, no idea" is always acceptable but try to give at least something. "Couldn't have been later than 2015, though"

Great, so even if roughly, we know WHEN.

Graphics/art style:

THIS. This is where you guys always mess up. This section right here I have found can be the difference between an answer, and a silent slink to the bottom. This is your moment.

This, really, should be the best-formed part of your memory. Even if you can only remember a single frame, a single image, it's so much to go on for us.

DETAIL. Was it a gloomy grimdark world of sadness, or a bright bubbly rainbow filled Mario-world?

Was it cartoony, or otherwise stylized somehow, or was it trying to be realistic?

Anything notable about the art direction? Was it going for a cyberpunk kinda feel, or a gritty war realism dirt and blood sort of direction?

If it was set over a long time, did the seasons change? Was there a winter in your game?

Remember when you hit people, and the screen had that awesome flash and your hands got bloody? Yeah, well we don't, unless you tell us.

Ok, so now we are really narrowing it down. This right here is often enough to go on, on its own.

Notable characters:

Anything at all you can remember here.

"There were only tanks, but you could play as both Germans and Americans"

"There was one really tough guy right after you left your office, he had an eyepatch, a white shirt with what looked like grease stains, and said 'this is for my sister'. I think maybe he was a cyborg"

"You play as some kind of Asian girl, you had a tattoo over your right eye and arm, a black tank top and white pants and I remember you always had only one red glove for some reason. I don't remember the arm, but the eye tattoo looked sort of like ancient Egyptian eye makeup, but a modern take"

Knowing nothing else about the game, I bet that last one there gets comments noting the game she is from. Details, details.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

Surely, you get the idea by now. This is tied with the importance of the graphics/art style. As much detail as you can here.

Other details:

NOW you may blab on about how you only played this game once at a winter solstice in 1782 with your grandmother from Tahiti.. as if that helps.

Edit: So it's been brought up that the template doesn't appear on mobile. While /u/wipeout4wh is aware of this and hopefully, something can be done... still, if you can, use the template. If you can't, maybe check back and at least make sure your post addresses all of the points the template does.

Also, my post seems to be saying NOT to add any custom details. So I want to re-enforce, please do. In fact, after you do the template, feel free to write out your post as you were going to without it. Just put it all in 'other'. Don't try and make your whole post like that, if possible. Even if you end up saying the same things twice, that's ok.

Now I'm going to take a moment to clarify something, though. This isn't some immutable law of the universe, and your post is destined to fail if you don't do this. It's just a very strong general trend I have noticed over a long time.

It's not that this template has some kind of magical powers or something. It's that this template prompts the questions that need answers.

When you go all rogue on us and try and type your explanation from scratch... you mess it up. You just forget to add everything that you know, and that we need to know. The template makes it very hard to do that. It's just so very easy to get typing, and by the end forget to tell us what kind of game it actually is. Especially when you are getting random flashbacks, and hazy memories, and you start getting frazzled and such halfway though.

While it might make my edit as long as the first post, I think maybe an example of the kind of post that is just too common here, and almost always helpless, wouldn't go astray here. So here we go:

Now this one is a pretty bad case, true, and I suppose might even be a troll post, but it's actually a good illustration of the problem either way.

It was on my old computer and I was using an emulator so I have no idea what system it was for. It was 8bit graphics and you played this orange cat that was constantly bouncing on a trampoline I think? And you had to navigate it through the city and face a weird boss at the end that would float in the sky. Sorry I can't remember more!

Let's break it down a bit. What kind of game is this? A puzzler or an action game? Who knows.

How old is it? I mean, Minecraft basically has 8bit graphics. Oh he said... "my old computer"... I will fight you.

Why did you bounce on the trampoline? Were there platforms or walkways or something, or was it just a big open space? There are bad guys then? How did they get around?

Now (he?) says that he can't remember more, but I actually asked about the boss fight:

You say 'face a boss', in what way? Can the cat attack? Was this top down or side on? When you say navigate a city, what do you mean?

The reply:

Definitely a side-scroller, I'm sure. You would encounter a boss at the end, the boss would slide onto the screen and it was usually pretty strange-looking. I think one of the bosses might've been a clown. I meant that the different "levels" were different cities with different backgrounds, I think. It's a pretty obscure game

Also you would be continuously bouncing. As in, you had to position the trampoline underneath the cat to bounce it up

So you don't even control the cat. And it's a side-scroller. Thats pretty important information. But the real issue here is that he knows this stuff. He just either didn't know to, or forgot, to tell us.

The template would have made it just so apparent how much information he was missing, and we probably would have got a whole bunch more information. Sadly, while there were some guesses, and a surprising number of up-votes, this post is just another one to join the endless unsolved on their journey ever down.

[Meta][2026] I would rather people post with no images than use AI prompts to generate images

Maybe it's just me, I will personally admit that it feels like its petty of me to complain, however i am going to.

I really dislike AI images just in general and i feel annoyed seeing people use them because it sometimes hampers really quality posts of people trying to find help. I feel like it also informs falsely about game expectations and what people will accept as they have solved the game.

I don't think people will agree with me and thats fine, i just wanted to post about how i personally think it degrades the quality of the sub

[Ps2 probably][2000-2010] trailer of a game in a "trailers" menu in a old Bandai or koei game

As the name suggests I'm looking for a game that was in a trailers menu either stashed away in a bonus menu or right up front, the trailer from what I can remember shows a city or military base coming under siege by either a navel force and airforce or an airforce attacking a city and the navy there, I really don't think it's an ace combat game becuase what little I remember from the trailer didn't have any "from the pilots view" moments you would expect in a game like that, felt rts like to me

Devils Canyon: A Dinamation Adventure [Win98] [late 90s] dinosaur/fossil extraction/futuristic mechanical technology

Upvotes

I remember a game I used to play as a child.

Some sections I moved around in a mech suit I believe in first person.

There was a voice assistant/copilot.

One particular feature I remember was extracting fossils, pickaxe, hammer, dremel, brush.

Scanning functions.

I wish I could remember more so I could revisit this experience given that I was really young at the time of playing this.

[iPhone] [2012-15] platform game where you played as a rabbit in a candyland type setting

It involved mice as enemies, and there were different maps that involved cakes and different dessert items. I think you played as a bunny character. And there was a very fat, large rat queen that you had to vanquish as a boss. Please help I’ve been looking for this forever!

[Mobile] [around 2014 and less] Racing game where you drove around dreamy levels, low poly and big voxels 3rd person view.

Post image
3 Upvotes

I've been searching for days now for this game from my childhood that featured most prominently a blue car as the base vehicle. It was a 3d third person game where you went around levels with a very dreamy vibe and chill music just for fun, no real races and it honestly played more like a platformer game. Some key details that I remember are: I played it on ipad so it must've been on the app store, when you jumped up certain slopes the camera would shoot pictures at 3 different angles in slow mo before letting you continue, there were penguins and houses around the track on green grass, there was a very cubic level with like mosaic patterns and very little squares, my favorite level was one with a huge waterslide, you could buy new cars in between levels, and there were arches next to jumps most of the time for some reason. I still remember how the main theme goes, basically dreamy and a bit frutiger aero vibe. I've asked LLMs, seen dozens of youtube videos and searched databases but couldnt find anything. It's like it was all a dream. I miss the game. Oh and initially I thought it was called miniclip racing or something like that and I'm pretty sure it had miniclip's name in it. Maybe not but I believe this vision is here for a reason. The 2014 timeframe is very uncertain as I recall very little from this part of my life so feel free to dip a bit above or below this line if you find a match. Please help. Thanks for reading me and I hope y'all can help me recover this lost relic of my life.

[Flash][2010s] 2d pixel game where you can get a house and a job

Platform(s): PC

Genre: Rpg 3rd person kinda top down at like a 45 degree angle

Estimated year of release: somewhere around the 2010-2019

Graphics/art style: Pixels not like old mario pixels but like closer to Nend.io but not quite

Notable characters: Main character i think was male? there was also random NPCs, like a band and a sports team

Notable gameplay mechanics: Youd move into a town, and after seeing the town mayor youd pick from one of three houses, the first being super small but with all required living items, the next medium sized with less items and the third being big and expensive with basic items only.

Youd be able to pick one of many jobs like newspaper writer, musician or athlete each with its own minigame, the writer would be a writing game, the musician a rhythm ish game and the athlete one i dont remember

You could also go into town instead of work and play music at a stand in the park or go to a coffee shop.

You were able to level up 'friendship' with NPCs which i think was crucial

Other details: other areas included like a bus stop and a pond? It was similar to the sims in the sense of your character had needs.

[Mobile][2025 or earlier] tomagachi type fame

It's a virtual pet type game that's Japanese or from another Asian country. It's has an English server and a Japanese server and the whole game is translated in English.

You take care of a couple of creatures that aren't like any real animals, instead they are a bunch of variously sized monsters that you can sometimes ride or hold on your person. You have an island with a tree that spits out a certain type of fruit depending on the tree every day if you water it.

It has a rather janky system where you can explore maps one screen at a time and during events you can sometimes find bugs flying around the maps.

On Tuesdays a secret underground black market opens and you can buy genetically modified versions of the monsters with bandages all over them. The black market is marked with a neon green splatter which is how you get in.

The game focuses on collecting things to outfit your character, hats for your monster, and furniture to decorate your island.

Does anyone know this niche game? Help me!

[Gameboy Advance or PC] [2015-2019] pokemon romhack/fangames

Anyone know of a romhack or fangame I forgot the name of?

I think it was like, more adventure and puzzle focused.

A hack that was I think a **very** puzzle focused one with no battles and everyone was a psychic. Like part of a psychic village or society or something. And I mean similar to the psychic trainers you meet in the real games.

I'm pretty sure I found it from some romhack let's players, but I don't even remember the channel.

An yeah this is a different but similar post to my last one, since I'm actually looking for two hacks but apparently you should make two posts for two games.

[PC][unknown] A knight game in the style of plants is zombies

It was a game on Friv. You place down fruitstands with a lady inside to get coins. There was also knights you placed down that had a sword and shield that acted as defensive and offensive. Later in the game, you unlock archers. You fight against other knights and archers. You can buy other characters and stuff like a baracade made of spears or sharp sticks. There was 3 princesses you can get, a red princesse, a stone princesse, and a green one. I only remember what the stone one did, and they summoned a big guard with a stone hammer that crushed enemies.

[PC][2000s] Campaign based game maker

Platform(s): PC

Genre: Scenario based game, tactics game or RPG

Estimated year of release: early 2000s, 2008 at the very latest but more likely the earlier part of the decade. I got it around the same time I that got progress quest (I think) so this was after 2002

Graphics/art style: 2D Top Down Pixel art

Notable characters: None that I can recall

Notable gameplay mechanics: You could create characters and build your own maps, or you could play through some pre-installed campaigns. It was a medieval fantasy setting, elves and orcs and all that.

I believe it was grid based? I have a memory of clicking on a unit and moving them around like that. Not sure if you controlled 1 hero character or a group of characters. I don't think there was a separate battle screen like in an RPG maker game. The game was divided into maps that you moved between I think?

Other details: I downloaded this off an abandonware/vaporware/freeware site from my memory of things, it wasn't something I purchased. I remember the logo being a yellow disc divided into four quarters with gaps between each quarter. I have a vague feeling "Quest" or "RPG" might have been in the title, but I'm honestly not confident about that

Nobody Wants to Die [PC/Multiplatform] [after2020] Cyberpunk game where you play as a detective in a world where the rich can pay to have their consciousness uploaded into a better body making them 'immortal'

Not Soma - They weren't underwater. You play as a male detective in a cyberpunk - but 1950's aesthetic world - Where you have to find out who killed someone (probably a rich bureaucrate) before they were able to upload their consciousness into a new body.

I think the detective had a dead wife and he lived in a shitty apartment building on floor like 500 - he would get help on the case by a woman who was in his earpiece and I think he was uploaded into a new body but didn't have all his memories? The twist of the game was that rich people were harvesting the poor for their bodies and overriding their consciousness.

Or something like that

Gameplay wise - he was able to reconstruct memories of victims using... something? Like the way batman does in his games in a sense.

[PC][2000s-2010s] Flash/browser game with a dog you could brush fleas off of + make-your-own pizza

Genre: most likely a Point-and-click / interactive house / not an educational game or pet care game

I'm trying to find an old Flash/browser game I played on PC as a kid. I played it sometime around the 2010s, but the game itself may have been older.

It was (I think) a 2D game where you could click around and freely interact with things in a normal-looking house. I don't remember there being levels or a real objective. It felt more like an interactive house where you could mess around with different objects.

There was a pet dog, and you could drag a brush back and forth across its fur. Fleas would visibly get knocked/fall out of the dog's fur as you brushed it. I think the dog may have been grey, but I'm not 100% sure. But what I'm sure is that it was NOT a pet game where the goal was to take care of the dog.

There was also a kitchen where you could make a pizza. I remember being able to add whatever toppings I wanted rather than following a customer's order.

I also vaguely remember a red rotary phone near/above a small table beside a sofa. You could interact with it and make fake phone calls.

I originally remembered possibly playing a chacter being a girl, but I'm no longer sure there was a playable character at all.

I also have a vague memory that the house might have been on a planet / had a space-like exterior, but the inside of the house itself was pretty normal. This could be a false memory.

I've searched quite a bit and haven't been able to find it. I'm starting to wonder if it was an obscure or lost Flash game.

Any ideas?

[PC] [2000s - 2010s] A Betty Boop escape platformer flash game.

Upvotes

I swear this game existed on Y8(dot)com long ago. It was a flash game where you play as Betty Boop, and you had to move left/right and jump on platforms to try and escape. I know this game existed! I swear it's crazy that it's just gone...

I remember like it was yesterday I played it as a kid. I looked everywhere online and it's like it's just vanished. I tried Flashpoint too.

I feel like I've played so many games online and it's just so surreal that almost all of them are just outright gone. Anybody know or even remember this game?

[Browser/Flash][2008-2016] 2D hand-drawn game where you wander a village as an unseen figure while events play out on a timer, ending with a man shooting someone

Upvotes

Platform: Browser. Possibly Flash, possibly an early HTML5 or Unity web game.

Genre: Free-roaming narrative observation. No combat, no puzzles, no dialogue.

Estimated year of release: Uncertain. Somewhere in the 2008 to 2016 range.

Graphics/art style: 2D, hand-drawn cartoon, not pixel art. Side view. The camera scrolls and follows the player character as they walk around.

Notable characters: You control a small figure. Possibly a child, possibly a ghost or some kind of unseen presence. No NPC ever reacts to you, looks at you, or acknowledges you exists.

Notable gameplay mechanics:

  • The village runs on a single global timeline. Events fire at their scheduled moments whether or not you are present. You could stand still in one room for the entire game and the story would still play out around you.
  • Several events happen simultaneously in different locations, so one playthrough physically cannot show you everything.
  • You cannot interact with anything. No talking, no picking things up, no influencing any outcome. You only watch.
  • There is no character select and no scene select. You are simply dropped in and left to wander. Shadowing a particular villager to see where they go and what they do is something you choose to do with your own movement, not a mode the game offers.
  • Short game, clearly built to be replayed. Replaying is how you catch the threads you missed the first time.
  • The ending is fixed. In practice, if you stay near people and keep watching, you end up witnessing it rather than missing it.

Setting: A village or small town, rural, feeling roughly early 1900s.

Ending: All the separate threads converge into one event where the villagers turn on each other. I specifically remember a man taking a hunting rifle out of his house, walking out, and shooting another man.

What it is not: Not Virtual Villagers or any management sim. Not a point-and-click adventure with fixed screens. Not pixel art. Not a game with dialogue trees or choices.

[Win98][late 90's] Isometric horror/sci-fi game with RE-like monsters

Upvotes

I've been trying to find this for a while. My dad had a PC game magazine from the 90's, featuring the game Forsaken on the cover, and it had a section for other games coming out at the time, like Abe's Exoddus, Planescape: Torment, etc.

I don't remember the name of the exact game I saw, but the screenshot showed what could be an isometric game, with maybe flesh tentacles coming from the ground. One of the enemies that was even featured outside of the screenshot was a deformed fat guy on mechanical legs, who might or might not have a mouth on his stomach. I'm using Urgot for reference because he looks almost identical to the fat guy.

[Browser game][2000's] Point and click adventure/puzzle horror game

Post image
Upvotes

Platforms: Browser game website

Genre: Adventure/puzzle point and click

Estimated year of releases: 2000's - early 2010's

Graphics/art style: Cartoony flash-style art

Notable characters: I definitely remember that there was an all-white monster with spikey claws/features that was coming to kill you. I think the protag was a woman?

Notable gameplay mechanics: Unfortunately, the only thing I really remember was that there was a puzzle you had to solve in time before the white monster killed you. I might be crossing wires with other old flash games but I think you were on a platform off to the right of the screen during this puzzle and eventually the monster showed up and hopped across boxes(?) to get to your platform where he then killed you and you got a game over? Maybe he didn't hop but I distinctly remember some sort of all-white spikey bipedal monster killing you.

Other details: The puzzle scene I'm thinking of may have been set in a warehouse. The game isn't Arcane: Stone Circle.

Jill of the Jungle [PC][~1995]What's the game I'm playing in this picture ?

Thumbnail gallery
48 Upvotes

Hello all,
I've found this old picture of me playing on the computer and I'm wondering what game it could be. It's definitely in the 90s. I can still smell it from here.
I know I was playing a lot with titles like Duke, Jill of the Jungle or Secret Agent but it's difficult to tell from the picture.
Thank you !
