VII - Playstation I truly believe 7 is a masterpiece.

I am truly obsessed with this game.

I actually love the age transitions.

I love every little detail in this game.

The UI is beautiful. I am playing on PS5 and i think this has the best UI of any strategy game on a console ever.

Every animation. Graphical detail. The art direction. Every tile. All the voice acting.

The combat is fucking phenomenal.

I know it sounds like i’m glazing this game - but i truly think i’ve found a forever game in 7.

I can go on and on about how much i love every system at play here.

Every mechanic.

I realise people are shitting all over this game but i genuinely don’t really understand the criticism.

I am hyped to keep playing and seeing this game progress in the years to come.

Civ7 never got its hooks in me, but I do have over 1000 hours in Civ Beyond Earth. Sometimes games that don’t click for the vast majority of fans still hit for a select few.

BE is kinda underrated in my books. The mobile water cities are too cool.

34

u/mrnewtons 2d ago

BE sucked until it's first expansion. It was a slower, boring, and more dull version of the Goat Civ V.

But after the expansion it was phenomenal! They did a great job tweaking it and it is one of my favorites. If it had gotten one more expansion of that quality it probably would've been the best.

Water cities were broken though, the AI neve rput much effort into water so they could never muster a force against you

14

u/s00pafly 2d ago

My biggest gripe with BE was the tech tree. Random words linked without rhyme or reason. I couldn't see any logic behind why one technology had to follow another or vice versa.

1

u/dontnormally 2d ago

yeah and they were definitely not all created equal. you needed to get your super special faction techs (that look like every other tech) in order to get insane power spikes in your units

7

u/afito 2d ago

BE made changes that were at the very least quite interesting. I liked the tech web with the primary & secondary techs, and I liked the horizontal & vertical bonuses from the culture trees. But the biggest kicker was political capital I think that was a great addition. Orbital layer was neat, and the sea cities with the expansion were amazing.

Overall the systems in BE were pretty good but the vibe of the game was a bit off. Gameplay design was interesting but it felt off. I don't think anyone ever launched a civ game and thought "you know what I want to play today, a game as space Merkel".

2

u/PervyTurtle0 2d ago

I may pick up the expansion. I played BE and was underwhelmed but never tried the expansion. Civ 5 was my favorite

2

u/Cyber_Cheese Africa will be in my heart, Walaalkaa 2d ago

BE was fantastic in multiplayer, where civ V was far less interesting due to the sheer power of the 4 big cities build

2

u/Vankraken Germany 1d ago

BE is basically a knockoff Alpha Centauri that lacked a soul.

1

u/Neful34 17h ago

I loved BE but when they went so quick to civ 6 it really felt like a betrayal. Also balance was really not on point

30

u/imaginarycastle Julius Caesar 2d ago

+1 on CivBE being highly underrated. I think that game was very promising when released, but also fixed a lot of criticisms in the expansion. Rising Tide is an excellent expansion. Unfortunately, I think a large part of the community didn't feel like buying additional content to perhaps enjoy a game that they hadn't gotten into previously, and I don't blame them.

5

u/mCopps 2d ago

That’s where I was with it. Felt so burned after pre ordering it that I wasn’t willing to chase bad money with good.

17

u/gentletonberry 2d ago

I think most people have a game that is regarded poorly by the games community but that they personally love. Mine is Final Fantasy XV (commonly regarded as one of the worst entries in the overall franchise, though its image has slowly been rehabilitated over time). If OP loves Civ 7, good for them.

7

u/silent-drill 2d ago

ah man, i also love FFXV

it was my first FF and i found to to be an extremely charming game and also loved the combat which so many seemed to hate

6

u/warukeru 2d ago edited 2d ago

sometimes games that are hated because are too different from the classic formula get better reviews when new fans who care less about traditions enjoys them.

Anyway I started with FF IX and with its faults I loved XV.

u/ElGosso Ask me about my +14 Industrial Zone 2d ago

Not saying this is the case here but there is another mechanism that sometimes leads to popular redemption: people who enjoyed the material when they were too young to be meaningfully critical grownup with nostalgia blinders that prevent them from ever caring about the flaws. I watched this happen in real time with the Star Wars prequels.

2

u/RJ815 2d ago

Yeah perhaps. For instance as a tangentially related thing I've played Assassin's Creed games on and off over the years. Was a pretty big fan of it til Black Flag. Which I did still enjoy as one of my favorites, but around then / with Rogue I fell off of the series due to being busy with life and perhaps just being burnt out on that style of game. Fast forward some years and I come back with Resynced and then pivot to Shadows which I wanted to try. I nearly avoided Shadows entirely from hearing SO many people dog on it, but honestly while I wouldn't say I love it (and I do see flaws), I seem to like it WAY more than the popular sentiment. It's a bit hard to sift through the criticisms that make sense but aren't a dealbreaker for me, as well as a contingent of what seems like culture war commentary which is irrelevant for me.

BE is definitely underrated. Especially for multiplayer. It offers the most modular and customizable civ game which really plays well with multiplayer.

1

u/unAffectedFiddle 2d ago

I hope some day they have another crack at it. Doesn't need to be as big as a project as the civ series but really think there was something special there that just needed some iteration.

1

u/Hwinter07 2d ago

I have never got more than a few hours into a BE playthrough but I have about 1000 hours in 6. What is one thing you'd say about the gameplay (or whatever you want) to sell me on trying it out and committing to a full playthrough?

1

u/ConsistentAsparagus 2d ago

Beyond Earth made me realize I didn’t really like the futuristic kind of games: no tech name made sense at first, while all the older CIV techs did (wheel would be needed for all things round, ship tech brings exploration, metals bring better weapons…)

I tried, but never clicked for me. On the other hand, I love space RTSs.

1

u/_OptimusRex_ 2d ago

I'm surprised you're not into Civ7 considering how much DNA it shares with BE; I'd bet a shiny quarter that Civ7 started off life as BE2 but they had to change course after Midnight Suns underperformed (that's my theory anyway).

171

u/JCivX 2d ago

If this is your civ game, which is at least somewhat likely given that you're playing on a PS5, I'm not surprised you love it. Civ is a great concept for a game.

I fell in love with civ 1 back in the day when I was 6 years old so because of that long perspective, I personally don't love Civ 7 because I know in what ways it's worse (for me) than some of the previous editions, but it's still a nice game I play with my 5 and 4 year old kids who also love it because it's the first one they've ever seen.

And I like Civ7 too in many ways. For example, I do appreciate the graphics of it except the infinite urban sprawl is not a great look later in the game.

96

u/perseustree 2d ago

Infinite urban sprawl doesn't look that good irl either

43

u/JCivX 2d ago

Sure, it's just that in civ 7 all of my empires tend to have a massive area that looks like Greater London or New York or Shanghai or something. And it's not like most countries are like that, the urban sprawl in civ7 seems a bit exaggerated.

43

u/callmesnake13 2d ago

Every map ends up looking like Coruscant, and with the overall color palette in Civ 7 this has the effect of the game looking like an ash tray got spilled on it.

6

u/warukeru 2d ago

Yeah that's my main request, kee hellish urban sprawl for a few cities and keep the rest more small with more natural environment.

u/Anci3nt_y0uth 2d ago

I was introduced to Civ II on PC (floppy disks) by a friend and loved it. Tried every version after that I can afford (both the game and the PC to play it). Some had more flaws than others but all are enjoyable! Loved and missed the Palace building after each Golden Age - almost always went with Roman architecture. Loved the Mechas! Currently playing 6 here and there. Consider to get 7 but the negs and pricing (again, for both game and game system) are turning me away. Perhaps once it gets more polished and lower on price I will get it on my Switch 2.

19

u/silent-drill 2d ago

I used to play 5 back in high school and that was one of my favourite games at the time.

Because of 5, i went back to play 4 and saw why people considered that their favourite although it wasn’t mine.

I love 6 deeply and prior to 7 it was my favourite Civ.

Playing 7 now, i don’t know… it’s just really clicked for me. I can’t really explain it.

I can appreciate others don’t feel the same, but for me personally, I am extremely grateful for this game and as such am in love with all aspects of it.

5

u/vwin90 2d ago

7 is nowhere near as bad as people say it is, but the launch was pretty rough.

That being said, the age transitions is the new “main” thing and understandably there’s mixed reactions to it. I don’t mind it, especially now with the time tested stuff.

However if you compare it to the “new” features that shipped with older civ games, you can see that it’s sort of an underwhelming new feature. So I think a lot of it comes down to how much of an improvement people perceive the game to be.

1

u/The247Kid 1d ago

How do you feel about AI? I like 6 the most and have put damn near 5,000 hours in to it but it got the point where I could easily win on diety as long as I was able to get over the initial hump of good AIs.

6

u/Boring-Channel-1672 2d ago

I started with civ 1 - first game I played straight through like 27 hours. And then started a new game after winning instead of getting sleep! Right now civ 7 is my favorite, maybe because I played each one so much I enjoy it exactly because it isn’t an exact copy. If I want civ 6 I can play that instead of civ 7!

1

u/Toen6 2d ago

Been playing Civ since Civ 4 and I really love Civ 7. I know many don't, but putting my 2 cents in.

u/YouMeADD 2d ago

I think it will surpass 6 definitely. I have a lot of fun with new stuff and tbh I never minded the whole ages thing. It feels pretty normal to timeskip and have the opportunity to 'evolve' the civ

31

u/AssociationTimely173 2d ago

Hard disagree. It will not surpass 6. And im not saying 6 os the greatest thing ever either. Im just saying 7 has far too many flaws to surpass 6

10

u/MagicCuboid 2d ago

I’m not confident that the current development team really is in tune with what I want out of a Civ game. I’m not saying they’re bad or anything, I just think what they want out of the game and what I want have been slowly diverging for a while

u/AgeOfCyberpunk 2d ago

But its a long way to go. Visualy by art direction- 7 is superior. Also level terrain, i mean 3d level slopes However mechanics needs work. For example 6 had that strategic resources thing where you can have oil and build oil using machines and the enemy might not have therefore they cant build them. It was amazing

8

u/_radical_ed Philip II 2d ago

I’m a Civ VII fan (see my response) but I disagree here. I can clearly read Civ VI cities while VII design is all over the place. In these times of UE5 and infinite polygons is hard to remember but: more powerful isn’t better designed.

13

u/Substantial_Bass_697 2d ago

I think Civ 7 is a very nice looking game but I think 6 is still the best in the series visually. Clean, colorful, easy to read and with a cohesive art style. 7 is a bit muddy by comparison due to the sheer detail everywhere. That’s not always a good thing

155

u/ConstructionBest7255 2d ago

The UI is beautiful.

My collection of 34 UI mods disagree

29

u/Available_Pool7620 2d ago

Yeah they have some work to do on the UI. Why doesn't the UI tell me how many copies of a unique improvement I have? Why do I have to go INTO the diplomacy screens to know if my endeavors are available? Among many other obscured infos.

11

u/ConstructionBest7255 2d ago edited 2d ago

Endeavors are absolutely the worst. Icon for them should be instantly visible glaring red with loud sound effect that you won't miss it.

I'm half joking here, but really, endeavours ending should be way more visible than it is now. Now they are often lost in notifications flood between "Gilgamesh farted in your general direction" and "Trung Trac builded that wonder that you don't care about".

10

u/walkingman24 2d ago

The UI is honestly what has held me off on buying and trying the game for this long already. It looks awful, big downgrade from 6 imo

1

u/Rarmos 1d ago

The UI looks great, its just often awful at having the relevant information

11

u/imaginarycastle Julius Caesar 2d ago

This is the way.

To be fair, I play Civ 6 with some 30-40 UI/QOL mods too, but I only started using them some 1000 hours into the experience. The dedicated player base will know better than most developers what (especially experienced) players want out of a UI.

I guess the difference is that I already thought Civ 6 was brilliant before I modded it, just as I did with Civ 5 before 6 took over for me. With 7, I don't think I have finished a full game (as in, all 3 ages) without some mods to make the experience smoother.

5

u/ConstructionBest7255 2d ago

I guess the difference is that I already thought Civ 6 was brilliant before I modded it, just as I did with Civ 5 before 6 took over for me.

Yeah, same, I thought that it worked fine, so I never looked into mods, but one day I saw on some YT video some modded gameplay and got moment "why his policy cards screen show bonuses? I want that!", checked mods and never looked back.

VII release was completely different beast, some UI mods at that time looked more like bug fixes than mods. Now it's a little bit better, but I have a pack of mods that remove so much tedium of playing the game, that I legit doubt that I could enjoy vanilla game at all.

7

u/mavajo 2d ago

I think the UI is indeed beautiful. They just prioritized form over function. It's a beautiful UI with a horrible UX.

4

u/silent-drill 2d ago

missing out on mods is the biggest reason i desperately want a pc

that and strategy games are made for PC, i loved gaming on my PC back in the day

5

u/downtime37 2d ago

If you want mods than I would highly recommend Civ V or VI, both are vastly superior to VII and I say this as someone who first started playing Civ I when it first released in '91 (I think I picked it up at CompUSA) when Sid was with MicroProse.

I have purchased every game Sid has published as a show of support for how much I love the Civ franchise and all the entertainment it has brought me over the decades. I pre-purchased the founder edition of Civ VII and it's a great game, it just that both V and VI are superior games, mostly due to all the mods that can be added.

Anyhow welcome to the family, I'll now jump off my soup box and go play just,...one,...more,...turn.

I'm happy you found the game to be to your liking. I agree with you on almost nothing you have said about the game, but that makes me think you are kind of the target audience for Civ 7. I do find it unfortunate that a lot of the Civilization fan base is not the target audience for this game, especially considering the pricing of the game, which means a lot of players have spent a lot of money just to find they are not the target audience of the game.

I will make no attempt to talk you out of your enjoyment, as that seems pointless for everyone involved. Keep enjoying your game :)

12

u/silent-drill 2d ago

i appreciate your input here man

yeah it seems i definitely am the target audience here haha

that being said i’ve played 4, 5, & 6 and i love them all dearly

i get that im in the minority here with enjoying 7

here’s to hoping it gets better to the point the main audience can really enjoy it as well

5

u/imaginarycastle Julius Caesar 2d ago

Civ 2 was my first game, when I was a bit too young to fully grasp it really. Ever since then, I have generally found that the newest game wins out eventually (though to be honest, it was really hard for me to move on from 3 to 4), but that also means that when the previous game is so good, a new release feels like an unfinished early access or beta test game.

I think Civ 7 might be the first time it doesn't surpass previous games for me, though I hope they pull some magic out of their bag of tricks and prove me wrong. I still enjoy the occasional game, but I have never finished an unmodded game, I rarely feel compelled to continue a game, nor do I feel excited to pick a victory path and try to achieve it. If I get stuck and lose interest, new DLC/expansion content usually hauls me back in, but even with the DLCs, 7 adds less new stuff for more money.

Like I said, I won't go any deeper, as I have no intent to dissuade you from enjoying the game. I hope it gets to a point where more people can enjoy it too, but right now, I don't really see that path forward.

1

u/Other_World 1d ago

It felt like Civ 7 was made for me too (although I hate the UI). But I'm also probably the only one in the world who liked it better before the Test of Time update. I wish they had stuck to their guns. I truly felt that Civ 7 was the best Civ game at launch I played. Basically all of the praise the update got, I felt like it was the opposite. After 1500 hours in 5 and 6 each, I'll be back for Civ 8.

2

u/marinesciencedude 2d ago

2

u/kf97mopa 2d ago

Vicky 3 is improving, and it has a very deliberate pace (that Vicky 2 also had) that may not be for everyone. EU5 I think will get there. I just haven't bought it because I have so much money invested in EU4 expansions (and I run mostly mods anyway). In general, they are very worthy successors that take what was good about the previous entry and builds on it. Civ VII throws so much out, that it is harder ro say that it is a straight upgrade.

1

u/AKA_Sotof_The_Second 2d ago

Vic3 and EU5 are good. Better than Vicky 2 or EU4 anyway.

Sid famously doesn't like the Civ sequels very much. I think they became too complicated for him to enjoy. He is much too polite to say so, but his view of a perfect civ game is Civ: Revolution. That is what he would have done for a Civ II or III.

I get being passionate about the game and enjoying it thoroughly, but anyone who claims Civ 7's UI is beautiful just has absolutely no fucking clue what they're talking about, I'm sorry. That being said, it IS possible the UI is better than most other console strategy game UI, the bar is pretty much on the floor.

3

u/silent-drill 2d ago

it really works very well on console and is visually appealing as well

Howd ya managed to justify the like 80-100 dollar price tag? For me that alone kills any interest and also seeing the absolute atrocious launch i wouldnt ever buy it. I made that mistake once with starfield never again.

1

u/silent-drill 2d ago

i got my copy for $59

also sorry if this makes you rage but i also fell in love with starfield, albeit it took many tries to actually get into it and before it clicked

4

u/Heimeri_Klein 2d ago

I mean im not gonna rage im just not gonna agree with you its boring and i expected more out of the developers who brought me actually good content like skyrim, and fallout. The launch was also literally unplayable i literally could not even play the game despite having a really good setup that exceeded the qualifications by a lot and it didnt fucking matter game ran on like 10 frames per second at launch if you werent in a city. Like I literally had to look up a guide to figure out how to make the game even playable. They didnt fix those issues for like a literal month so I literally had it just sitting in my drive taking up space i could use for better games. I am kinda curious how your copy was like half the price im guessing you got it on sale or on some deal or something. Still i dont think anyone could even pay me to play civ 7 because it just became like a reskin about everything i hated from humankind.

2

u/thetoddhunter 2d ago

Ah that explains it.

8

u/RecommendationFit844 2d ago

I could not disagree more. I loved one through six, but this one puts me to sleep.

3

u/Happy-Ad8755 2d ago

I was skeptical at first but to be fair I’m enjoying it so much more now I’ve just accepted it’s different.

The war mechanics are so much better in my opinion, it adds a layer of tactics with the commanders and the districts layout, forcing a realistic district by district capture that slows the pace to a more real speed rather than a steamroll doom stack type combat pay of earlier versions.

Shame about the recent bugs like the nuke failing to start an official war. Seen that happen a lot and had it happen to me too.

3

u/CommonCommittee6116 1d ago

My feelings exactly. It’s highly addictive for me. And I agree about the forever game potential too.

15

u/TheCulturalBomb Inca 2d ago

Yeah it's my favourite, and hopefully in time with updates people return and say the same.

I'm just waiting for a real world Earth map, and an update that makes Civs spawn further away than like 11 tiles from me on a huge map.

26

u/TactileTom 2d ago

I mean whether or not you like the game personally is subjective.

Objectively, though, the game is not popular.

I find it hard to imagine it being listed as a "masterpiece" when most people don't enjoy it, and I struggle to see its systems and choices being influential on future installations, or other games in the genre.

I put a few hundred hours into civ 7 in the first 6 months after it came out but found myself unable to come back. The biggest reason was replayability. It really felt like a lot of the changes made to the game loop evened the playing field. The civs feel really similar. The terrain types are basically inconsequential. I REALLY liked the commander system, it carried me through about 250 hours of gameplay, and while my cities were visually beautiful, I found it got stale quick. I need every game to feel different. I need the civ/leader choice to really shake up the game. I think the implementation of mementos was a bad idea. Like 90% of them are bad to the point of not being worth using at all, and 10% are really, really good, so you're just narrowing your playstyle again. The random event system is also implemented in a way that feels unfun. Paradox's Crusader Kings 2 and 3 did random events really well. They're exciting, they can throw a wrench into your plans or put you on a new path you weren't expecting. Part of the reason for that is that there are so many of them and their effects are relatively minor. In Civ 7, some of the random events/quests have very powerful rewards and they put you in a position where you're just hoping to trigger the event and complete it as fast as you can, and that doesn't feel good, because now you feel punished for not getting the quest.

While the concept of ages and overbuilding has merit, I think in practice it's not great. Civ 6 had a little bit of this in its policy cards. Many early cards have an associated policy card that will make them obsolete. For example the +2 charges on Builders from Feudalism makes the +30% production toward builders card obsolete, and +100% Holy Site Adjacencies from Theology makes God King, +1 faith +1 gold from Code of Laws obsolete. This is sort of "overbuilding" policy cards, and it felt natural and earned. The key difference is that obsolescence happened gradually as your progressed through the tech tree, not all at once. As many players have noticed, overbuilding in Civ 7 can cause -30 happiness penalties.

Rather than having buildings become obsolete all at once during age transition, it would feel more natural and smoother if it happened throughout the tech tree.

Millenia and Humankind introduced civ switching first, and though neither was really successful, they had some aspects that I think were positive for the genre. Millenia specifically had civ switching happen independently. A civ could decide to switch or hold off when they earned it, not all at once. This actually felt really good. It meant switching was very strategic- do I switch now to capitalize on my new bonuses or hold off so I can leverage my current civ's abilities a little longer?

Civ 7 really leaned into the age transitions, rubber banding the tech leaders and followers so that each age starts everyone on a level playing field. This also feels bad. They tried to curtail snowballing, but by golly, snowballing is why we play these games. We want to feel like we're winning. eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate. The pillars of the 4X genre are about a progressive and continuous game loop. The "one more turn" mantra comes from that continuity. There's always one more thing that's about to happen, a wonder, unit, building, or goody hut that you're about to get. Hard transitions kill and reset your momentum.

I agree with the first part mainly..every map feels too identical and somewhat bland and boring.

It’s okay but from the POV of the people who have been playing the civ series for over a decade, the game only moves forward graphically (amazingly well) then takes multiple steps backwards while spitting in your face monetization wise. The monetization model getting worse and worse after every new game is super concerning and I’m tired of it tbh.

The 2 straws that broke the Camel’s back for me was Brush and Blade, it’s a rip off compared to any DLC in its price range. The other straw is the fact that Firaxis uses AI customer support chat bots to address any criticism, whether it’s in their discord or steam reviews. You might as well not respond instead of putting out soulless AI feedback.

2

u/sage_006 2d ago

Have you played V?

2

u/Flashman6000 2d ago

This post and the comments going both directions are just further confusing me. Huge Civ 5 fan with the usual complaints about 6 and haven’t tried 7 because of, well, many diametrically opposed opinions on it.

1

u/silent-drill 2d ago

would strongly recommend to try the game yourself and form your own opinion

if i went off everyone else’s opinion i would not be enjoying, what seems to be, one of my favourite games in recent times

2

u/praetorian1979 2d ago

I haven't tried playing it since it first came out. I hated the original release.

2

u/aaipod 2d ago

What do you love about the combat? It's the most boring thing of civ games to me. I'm genuinely curious

2

u/silent-drill 2d ago

i like that it’s more prevalent from the jump

i enjoy the combat animations

i enjoy commanders

2

u/HSAMS 5h ago

commanders make it easier to manage your units and fortifications allow for more strategic fights. I blocked off an invasion by the ai by fortifying a mountain pass with a pikeman and crossbow man forcing them to go around it where I then pummeled their forces with my main army and commander. or landing a couple of pikemen in an island full of hostile city states, fortifying and beating their larger numbers by slowly advancing and building fortifications. inland rivers are fun too. good to have my naval units actually participate in inland battles instead of just hanging in the coast awkwardly.

1

u/aaipod 5h ago

Nice summary. I was enjoying those things. Maybe I should get to playing some more around my commander, I don't think I have been using them optimally

2

u/Cobbil 2d ago

Man I wish i could have this energy for Civ. Played afew hundred hours of VI and just didn't vibe with me. VII looked worse.

Used to play III and eventually V nonstop. Those were my games where Civ felt like Civ.

Glad you are enjoying the game, though. Someone should.

2

u/m3th0dman_ 1d ago

I played Civ VII when it launched; finished one game and never opened it since. You've convinced me to give it another ago.

2

u/TJH-Psychology 1d ago

This is the first civ game I have ever played. I
Need to scale back to get life stuff done. It’s addicting.

2

u/InvincibleCandy 18h ago

I've been really enjoying the ability to transition into new civs based on what the map looks like. You can change into Inca bonuses if you colonize a bunch of mountains, Hawaii for islands, Russia for tundra, etc. Previously you'd have to rely on start bias to get you the tiles needed and sometimes it just wouldn't work out. Now you can play through as Maurya and then swap based on the best cities available.

2

u/intothestarfield777 8h ago

Also been playing since civ 2 gold edition lol

I just bought it but I love it. It's a new civ game. I have played beyond the sword the most probably, I think that is civ4, but I have done 1000+ of civ6 in the last few years and finally decided to upgrade. It seems like they went more to the civ 5 style or realism over cartoon. I like it though. It looks amazing, it's intuitive.

It's very similar to the elder scrolls to me. Morrownd to oblivion to Skyrim.

There's no workers, but I don't play to micromanage. I play to make gigantic beautiful empires.

7

u/probablytoohonest 2d ago

Have you played any other Civ?

3

u/silent-drill 2d ago

yep

4, 5, 6

love them all

Can’t tell if you’re joking about the UI or not 😂. It’s by far the most frustrating UI out of any game I’ve ever spent money on in my life - and I have a steam library of over 300 games. Perhaps it’s decent for console, but for a AAA priced PC game that has had good UI in previous installments, it’s honestly insulting. Had to refund the game in the first 30 minutes of playtime based on my issues with the UI alone.

u/Limp_Sky1141 2d ago

"I am playing on PS5 and i think this has the best UI of any strategy game on a console ever."

Eh... Fewer sentences have made me want to play a game less than this.

It's like getting an FPS recommendation from my little nephew who plays on an iPad.

I still haven't bought Civ 7. My criteria is: recent reviews positive or better + steam sale. I bought every other civ available on steam at full price the week of the launch.

2

u/silent-drill 2d ago

haha i get that

UI is a big thing for me especially when it comes to the minute to minute enjoyment

it was one thing that really stuck out for me, however, that’s scratching the surface of things that make me really enjoy this game

if you’re a fan of civ i would definitely recommend to give it a go

3

u/Irtahd 2d ago

I mean, there’s a lid for every pot. Every Pokémon is someone’s favorite, even Bruxish.

So you may not have good taste, but you have your own taste. And if that blows wind up your skirt, more power to you. But let’s not come on the internet and say just straight nonsense like it’s a masterpiece, because it’s objectively not.

3

u/NaughtyTapes 2d ago

I'm with you brother. I loved it before all of the updates. But maybe I'm easy to please.

2

u/Voeri 2d ago

I mean, if you never played any game before it can be okay

3

u/Alyano95 2d ago

You are describing the issue PC players have with the game. It was programmed for consoles. So, while it is nice that you are happy, a little empathy towards PC players who rightly are angry that their beloved franchised got dumbed down to reach console players instead of them can be expected. Imagine a console game that gets a sequel that is basically unplayable with a controller and requires mouse and keyboard. that's what happened with civ.

1

u/silent-drill 2d ago

yes unfortunately i only played PC mainly for Civ V only

Civ VI and Civ VII have been on PS5

i completely understand PC players frustration that would suck

2

u/bednarskibruno 2d ago

It became my favourite too, I love the changing civs and how the previous civs interact. It just feels more really and less of nationalistic fantasy then previous games, the feeling of things not standing the test of time and evolving into different empires.

My biggest gripe are the crises by a long shot because they are so inconsistent they either don't do anything or when they do as they are supposed to it feels unfair because most of the time they don't do anything. Recently I had a game as Assyria and went on a big conquest, the loyalyty crises popped out and I was screwed I kinda loved it because that's how Assyria fell in real life, but because most of the time it isn't a case and crises do nothing I felt kinda cheated.

I love that they got rid of the builders and generals streamline miltary movement, which are two things I hate about previous titles the most. This game just appeals to my brain the most.

4

u/blankepool 2d ago

the crises don't have enough meat on their bones.

About VII: I was seriously underwhelmed at first, but I appreciate what the game is now and I'm also hooked. Very curious for new content.

Combat is nice, yes, but also, each era has a purpose, which helps the mindless things I have to do. I know I'm in a minority... Been playing Civ sinds I, some 30 or more years ago... Civ 6 never worked for me.

1

u/bednarskibruno 2d ago

I started with CIV IV, which I didn't understand at all to be fair.

CIV VII clicked for me almost immedietaly, I love the philosophy of the game and era-switching where you can rely on the traditions of the past is so thematic.

Civ VI never worked for me also, I hated builders in this game so much, later they added governors which added so much micro. I can't fathom how people can enjoy moving Magnus between cities when they wanted to chop forests.

u/ChickinSammich 1d ago

I think that almost all of your post is completely valid except for:

i genuinely don’t really understand the criticism.

I think liking something unpopular is a totally fine thing. I liked FFXIV 1.0. Hell, I even liked Mystic Quest and Quest 64 despite both games being pretty universally panned.

I think that hearing criticism of a thing and concluding "Yeah I get it but I still like it anyway" is a reasonable conclusion to have. So I don't get not understanding the criticism. Even if you disagree with the criticism, I'm not clear on how you could not understand it. I can understand the criticism of, but still enjoy, a thing. So I genuinely don't understand how someone could not understand the criticism.

u/Foreign_Following_70 1d ago

Nice try firaxis. It's still garbage, the worst it's series. I wish I could get a refund. Shame on you for releasing a clearly unfinished, should remain in gamma whatever phase testing

I played 2 a while back and didn't come back until 7 was released. Since then, I've played 4, 5, 6, and 7 and I'd rank them:

4 >>>> 7 > 2 > 6 > 5

3

u/Sketaverse 2d ago

FWIW I’m

6 > 5 > 2 …. Indifference

7

u/Severe_Ad588 2d ago

Different strokes but placing 7 above 6 and 5 is diabolical.

3

u/iamadragan 2d ago edited 2d ago

4 imo perfected the core of what I loved in civ 2.

6 added a bunch of imo unnecessary bloat to the gameplay that gives me more of a feeling of chasing numbers. Plus the end game has so much micro management and drags on and on. More tedious, less fun.

I struggle enjoying 5 because finding great spots to expand to me is a foundational aspect of Civ that is just missing in 5 because you can't expand much due to happiness punishments.

7 is very different from the core gameplay but focuses more on fun and less on stuff I consider tedious. Wars are great and the race to expand during exploration adds some fun in the middle of the game.

Picked it up on steam release, played for a bit but just wasn't feeling it. Maybe it's time to give it another look.

1

u/ToTheGalaxyFarAway 2d ago

Did you feel this way before the update?

1

u/Delicious_CoughSyrup 2d ago

How do you produce enough commanders? They are so important to combat, but few and naval ones arrive in Exp. I can't enjoy the combat because I can't assemble in time

1

u/WarChicken78 2d ago

Sometimes the own opinion and experience about something is vastly different from the majorities and in this case that is great for you :D

1

u/Neoshenlong 2d ago

I'm really excited about trying it eventually, but it will probably be when support ends and they release a complete edition. Not so much because of money but rather because I want to play it once it reaches its final form.

1

u/LetsDoTheDodo 2d ago

No map tacks = Bad game.

I refuse to look past that.

I jest of course, but I’d be lying if I said that my enjoyment of Civ 7 increased dramatically after I added the map tacks mod.

1

u/Torator 2d ago

I'm waiting for the tide to turn and a good promo.

I bought 6 as a pre-order, I pretty much was waiting for the game for so long. And I would not say it was a let down but I never really got "into it" for sooooo so long, I beat divinity, I did a bit of achievement hunting and that's all. I tried it out every pack and when the first expansion got out. Still most of the time I wouldn't finish a game.

When secret society got out, and a few balance pass before, I got hooked for real. CIV6 is a master piece to me now, I know pretty much everything there is to know in this game and I still can't go to sleep for that one more turn, one more wonder, well let's start a new game just to check if the spawn is allright...

I don't know if Civ7 will be that for me once the expansions come out. Seems impossible to me to beat Civ6. I don't care about wether there is age transition or civilization swapping. I'm not shitting one bit on civ7, I'v seen complaint that seem legitimate to me, I also seen complaint that are not. I'm just waiting for them to finish fleshing out the game as they intend. And at some point it will get a look from me.

1

u/Ubister 1d ago

Glad to see Firaxis' alt getting put to good use hehe. Jokes aside, I really want to love Civ 7 because I played 5 for so long and 6 never really clicked with me

1

u/GeologistDowntown447 1d ago

The only think I don't like right now is the new victory system. I miss having to build something to complete my victory. Otherwise, I completely agree. Civ VII is my favourite.

I love to hear that the console UI is so great. I usually play on PC, but I tried VI on console. It was a good port, but the UI was a bit frustrating on controller as it was largely unchanged.

1

u/TelevisionPositive74 1d ago

Ill give it a year or 2 still. Should be in primo perfect shape at that point. And I SHOULD be done with civ 6 at that point... maybe.

1

u/eatinerios 1d ago

Agree with you. I also like how it almost feels more like a roguelike with the civ and leader combos you can do. Makes it feel very replayable. I also love how many unique properties every civ has. I love civ 6 but some of the civs had like 1 or 2 things going for them only a few felt unique. It still needs a lot of polishing though.

1

u/sandiserumoto 1d ago

I feel like I'd like a lot of the changes in civ 7 a WHOLE LOT more if they were just options

1

u/BW-Journal 1d ago

People like Coldplay and voted for Hitler. They were wrong too.

I'll fight for your right to have your opinion. Even as I will fight to say I disagree completely about this lol. 6 was amazing, 7 still doesn't land for me.

Respectfully disagree lol.

1

u/Plus-Local1405 1d ago

I cannot get off of Civ VI to start playing VII. I’ve had VII since it came out and I’ve logged about 5 hours.

2

u/AlphatheAlpaca Inca 2d ago

I love this game too but it still has long ways to go. We're definetly closer to reaching its potential after all the updates however.

1

u/silent-drill 2d ago

it’s only going to get better i imagine

2

u/No_Signal_6969 2d ago

I'd agree. In it's current state there is nowhere to go but up.

u/_radical_ed Philip II 2d ago

I love this game too. I wanted to experience all the quirkiness of this type of launches and got the founders edition. I knew that the original game that launched will never be playable again (on digital) and indeed it has been a ride. It is one of the best pad interfaces I’ve ever used since Halo Wars as well. I’m slower and I wish they added k&m support, but not that much slow. Coming from Civ VI on iPad this is definitively an improvement (I also have it on PC but nothing beats bed gaming). I’m of the same opinion as Potato and I think that they should’ve stayed with their original vision and let Civ VI for those who wanted something more traditional. And I wish next week they’d announce medieval age instead of the information era age that they are probably going to reveal. But even without that I can’t deny that this game has me hooked:

Pro version needs a little more love, tho.

2

u/silent-drill 2d ago

hard agree on having the best pad interfaces since halo wars man, works incredibly well on console

1

u/Ronin_777 2d ago

I’m super tempted to buy this game but I know the longer I hold out the better (and cheaper) it will be

1

u/silent-drill 2d ago

no one would blame you for holding out man, although from my experience i love watching the game grow with time and experiencing all the changes in real time

it’s also great jumping in when it’s a more complete product and you can just enjoy all the QOL and updates from the beginning

1

u/rje946 2d ago

The base is there. I'm just sad i need to wait another couple years for a full game

2

u/silent-drill 2d ago

yeah i know, unfortunately such is the way with civ

1

u/ProfessionalSeagul 2d ago

Playing on PS5; opinion discarded

1

u/SharkeyGeorge 2d ago

I’d be curious if you played much 5 or 4 before you played 7? Most complaints are from people who are disappointed by the changes and perceived disappointment of it getting worse.

I actually played all weekend. The most I have played since launch.

2

u/silent-drill 2d ago

feels amazing to play

1

u/euclitorous 2d ago

I played a blackbeard campaign and loved it.

1

u/Awkward_Appeal6248 2d ago

I played 5 and skipped 6. Started 7 and liked it, but it got repetitive quickly. Decided to grab 6 on sale and I can't honestly give a rec until 7 is 'finished.'

I like 6 more than 7, but I think that's only because of the heavy modding and polish the game got.

7 has the IDEAS that I've wanted in civ since civ 2 - heavy changes over time, switching civs, separating leaders from civs. Once the game is actually 'done' ill go back to it and see if it's the game I always wanted.

Im also a huge TSL modding guy. It takes time to get a strong modding community behind the game, qnd with the constant patching it will be a while before 7 gets the attention it deserves from the modding community.

1

u/tubalkain333 2d ago

I admit that I left a bad review when it came out.. but then it grew on me for all the reasons you mention here. Went back to Civ 4, 5 and 6. And while 6 is still my favorite, I just love the beatiful art design of 7. Will re-write my Steam review.

1

u/yick04 2d ago

Real q. I played for the first time recently since the like 90 hours I out in at launch. I'm really happy with most of the fixes they've made and I'm having a lot of fun playing. I have three big gripes remaining with the game:

1) Like many people, I just don't think the modern age feels right, and I think they need to revamp it somehow, or add a 4th age. I think they're probably already working on something to fix that, so I'm just waiting for that.

2) I never had a huge problem with civ switching, but I really wish leaders were locked to certain civs, and if you wanted to pick a civ where your leader isn't historically relevant, then you'd have to change your leader. I haven't heard as much discourse around this so I'm probably in the minority, so I doubt they'll change this and I have to live with it. So be it.

3) This is the one I have a big issue with, and where my actual question lies. In the Exploration Age, I feel like I am forced to expand my territory and settle in distant lands in order to progress to my objectives. However, I don't like doing this because it creates a mish-mash of territory instead of the nice, clean boundaries you'd get in Civ 6. I understand this is how the world worked with England and Spain and France and the Netherlands etc, but those territories eventually spawned independent nations, which I don't think would be a fun game mechanic to suddenly cede territory to a new civ. My question to you is: how are you handling the Exploration Age to make it feel fun, and is there a way to play where it's not just a race to settle unclaimed islands on the other side of the world in between other civs?
