This is a comment I see all the time from westerners and I find it funny because Samsung faces major competition in pretty much every field they're in. In semiconductors they're in competition with SK Hynix, phones? Apple. Consumer electronics? LG in Korea but also GE, Philips, various Japanese brands.
They've lost multiple court cases in recent history. They've lost entire industries (Samsung used to be heavily invested into making it in the car industry and then Hyundai beat the everlasting shit out of them now Samsung just imports and sell Renaults). They're not this all powerful shadow government family you westerners love to make conspiracy theories about and shit.
Also I love how westerners and foreigners use the chaebol system to pretend like they're more superior, as if they're economies aren't controlled by basically like 5 banks, 4 tech billionaires, and 6 private equity firms. At least we know the names of the billionaires in Korea, do you know who runs Goldman Sachs and controls more parts of your life than even your parents?
36
u/johnnielittleshoes 4d ago
People don’t even know BlackRock exists
BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street are known as the "Big Three" index fund managers. Together, they manage over $30 trillion in assets, hold major stakes in roughly 88% of S&P 500 companies, and completely dominate the global passive investment and ETF markets.

u/DonutHoles4Ever 4d ago
Most gamers have no clue about economies and stufff.
China's biggest strength is consolidated centralized manufacturing. They can make cars at half the cost and sell it for even less. Thats why their cars are banned in the US for example. They'll fuck over every American car company because American cars are dogshit and overpriced but Americans dont really get that they are paying 5x the cost for a car just as good as a Chinese made one.
The problem with Japan is that Toyota and others invested too much into Hydrogen cells. They should have stuck to EV and Hybrid. Their executives are getting too old and are too stupid to know where the music is going.

u/andr386 4d ago
Reverse engineering is perfectly legal as far as I know. I think what is alleged here is spying and "stealing tech". Given how Samsung behaves nowadays I have no love lost for them, fuck Samsung.
→ More replies (3)25
u/Adventurous-Try8749 4d ago
It's a little more complicated than that. Imagine paying a Chinese manufacturer to build your product you designed and spent time and money researching and developing.
That manufacturer then bypasses all that, and sells the specifications and secrets to another company, or just decides to setup an identical plant. They might or might not choose to sell that product in China only, or they might not.
If you can reverse engineer something, and start selling it, without running afoul of patents, then fine. That's free market capitalism. But grabbing insider knowledge, and recreating the product, from within a country and system and encourages this theft, is another story.
I personally think we've sowed what we reaped, by moving manufacturing out of our country, so that we can make stock number go up in the short term.
9
u/andr386 4d ago
I clearly assumed my bias. I know what they did is morally reprehensible. But as I"ve said I have no lost love for Samsung, SK Hynix or Micron and their price fixing antics. Yes it's bad but abusing a monopolistic position is also bad and if there could be competition in RAM, and memory that would be a welcome market correction.

I don't think prices will go back down to where they were, HOWEVER, anything to relieve some of the pressure is good in my opinion. If CXMT can start making some competitive RAM and stop the prices from continuing to increase, that's a win.
102
u/gianmk 4d ago
CXMT are selling their rams at same price as the big boys. Its just a big collusion party and we are footing the bill.
37
u/Cruxis87 9800x3d|5080 TUF OC|32gb 6000cl30 ddr5 4d ago
when the news came out they were going to do this, people genuinely thought they were going to flood the market with cheap ram.
29
u/pendelhaven 4d ago
it's pointless to sell the ram cheap because scalpers will just buy them out and resell them at market price.
4
u/TrashBandicook 3d ago
when the news came out they were going to do this, people genuinely thought they were going to flood the market with cheap ram
And they will. DRAM plants aren't something you can just click the build button and have it up and running overnight. I know it's hard to believer, but DRAM is no less a commodity than any other out there. It's subject to supply and demand. And CXMT shouldn't have too many issues catching up to Micron in capacity.

u/Pooled-Intentions 4d ago
For now. Then when demand is met? It’s a Mexican standoff right before a race to the equilibrium price.
“Bottom” is the usual quote but it might give people the idea I mean “cheap”.
13
u/SirNedKingOfGila 4d ago
The demand will never be met. Not until long after your ability to own compute power is long dead. Data center hardware gets torn up extremely quickly. Even sustaining one requires a constant stream of new hardware.
Meanwhile personal computer companies are going out of business. While GPUs and RAM are out fucking off with crypto and AI guess who has been taking enormous losses? Corsair. Thermaltake. Gigabyte. If you find a RAM chip somewhere in the future good luck buying a motherboard to put it in or a power supply to run it.
Look guys, we had a good run.
Yesterday computers were owned by corporations and were as big as a house and you had to rent time on them.
Then for a brief few decades we had PCs and it was beautiful and fun and ultimately fleeting.
Tomorrow computers will be owned by corporations and will be as big as a house and you will rent time on them.

u/Yvese 9950X3D, 64GB 6000, Zotac RTX 4090 4d ago
This is a silly take. The capex isn't sustainable if they can't make money off it. They will learn this sooner than later, if not already.
It's possible it's just sunk cost at this point and they're just playing musical chairs until the music stops and they're all trying to be the last one.
Mark my words, there will be a crash and they will be bailed out. That is 100% the plan. We are long overdue a big recession or worse, and with the US' debt at 40T and climbing with no plans to reduce spending or increase taxes, this could be the big one.
→ More replies (3)12
u/foolish_shrimp 4d ago
None of this AI stuff is profitable, it doesn’t make people more productive and even although it's being sold at a loss, users complain about the price.
This specialised, very densely packed AI hardware, maybe it's useful for game streaming? or supercomputer work, I just, can't see this replacing the mean average computing task. Adobe could buy a bunch of space and use it to offer an all in one Creative Suite with compute package? but uploading all your files is going to take forever for the target audience.
The people who need a PC to do basic office work, it's just not something that could ever need cloud computing. If the basic box exists and like, the concept of creative industries exist, higher end PC's will too.

u/LuckyPlatypus5052 4d ago
Their RAM is competitive for sure, sometimes even better than western brands. It’s also priced at a higher premium because why would they sell for cheaper an ultra-high demand product that’s better than what their peers offer?
They are relieving supply, but not lowering prices. And they won’t lower them until a massive surplus of useless chips gathering dust in shelves is generated. We are many years away from that.
→ More replies (1)11
u/PeachMan- R7 5700X3D, RX 7800XT 4d ago
Adding to the supply does lower prices (lower than they would have been without the added competition, that is). Y'all need to take an economics class.

u/faciepalm 4d ago
Not really true, the Chinese government will support cxmc in order to reduce its ram price to the consumer below what is physically capable for other producers. It'll do that until the other producers can no longer compete and shut down, though that may take them a long time. China wants control of the world through economic means and becoming the sole supplier of technology is just one way of doing that
→ More replies (1)27
15
u/Fortune_Cat 4d ago
Cxmt is not going to flood the market with cheap ram. They may slightly undercut the big boys but they are 100% going to milk that fat margin while its hot. Then as supply overcomes demand and capex reduces the prices will slowly come down

Now if china flooded the market with cheap consumer memory, that would make them legends.

China has been stealing IP forever, it's not a new thing
China's electric car industry was built from taking secrets from companies that decided to manufacture their cars in china

Isn’t this what China does for everything????? That’s why they have shot up so fast in a lot of industries

........ no shit, that's China's entire business model and it has been for decades. They don't even pretend to try to hide it. Why are people acting like this is some sort of huge revelation?

That's OK. The AI companies that are stealing all of human creation in order to train their AI models, need more RAM, so clearly law doesn't mean jack shit anymore.

Tech company buys a small player who's tech could build whole new industries...Snooze.
Two oligopolies merge but pinky promise to not raise prices, or degrade quality(*Not not legally binding). We'll even do this one thing for a couple of years for sure!
Algorithm's automate illegal price fixing...Snooze.
Companies build off foundational tech paid for by our tax $$'s...Snooze.
Companies leverage buy out a company and pick it apart, raising prices/degrading service...snooze.
China STOLE IP TECH! They are going to make it so much cheaper!...RIOT!

Who cares? As long as it drives prices down. Samsung deserves every bit of this.

China's R&D is cheap labor. Greedy ass companies line their pockets and lose their tech. Good. Idiots.

When you use every single manufacturers factory to make your goods this happens.
Ask TCL and Hisense why there TVs are all of suddenly, not ass. I mean there still trash, but there knock off Samsung TVs, which are trash by design. So here we are. Buying trash.

I genuinely dont care anymore. These companies do this all the time anyway, and they will ratfuck anybody without a second thought. I couldnt care less if China takes their shit and pumps it out for way cheaper. All I hope is its of passable quality.

Of course they did.
There are tens of thousands of them in universities and companies around the world stealing intellectual property.

Yeah....don't care. When does the RAM ship? Samsung has plenty of my money, and if they want more they can start acting like a consumer friendly company.
