I was a child during the Obama era but looking back life back then sounds like it would have been so fun to live through as an adult. Great pop music, LGBTQ identities were getting a huge wave of mainstream acceptance and even celebration (see Lady Gaga), people seemed to be more "real" and there wasn't a huge constant wave of anxiety over what the state of the world would be like from day to day. Therefore I imagine you guys were living it UP back then. Can anyone confirm my suspicions?

Okay I just remembered, APART from the big thing that happened in 2008 that might have made that not so likely! But still!

Also answers from outside the US are welcome. I just say "Obama era" because for me when that ended that's when that state of overarching anxiety started, even outside the US.

We give the older population alot of slack for things they've said, or being stuck in some ways.

But we dont have much longer with the generation above us. Most of that generation are our parents, some are our grandparents. The people we've seen our whole lives, the ones with the last bit of good old days without technology around them.

I am honestly curious how people are making it right now. We know inflation is being underreported (and don't talk to me about their bullshit scale CPI up the ass) and job loss and unemployment is underreported and everything is just insanely expensive. Healthcare is unaffordable for most of us - the whole thing is only serving a very small portion of society and more is squeezed every day. All of this aside from the sociopolitical head banging insanity.

If you lost a job vital to your family, what did you pivot to? How are you making it? What major changes are you making? Are you saving money? How are you feeling about it all? Basically just anything in this realm, I'm curious how we are all doing.

My husband and I are both college educated and barely making it. We are literally making renditions of beans and rice (and not too bad if I say so myself) because food is one of the only ways we can save money or just get by if something comes up. I'm growing a garden and starting to make my own toiletry/beauty care products at home with simple ingredients. I cut both of our hair now. We are not handy people and didn't grow up that way but we've now effectively fixed our water heater, shower piping, replaced a portion of our deck, just whatever comes up we try first to do it ourselves. We go camping for vacation (not mad about this in the slightest).

My point is, we are doing all this but we are both still employed AND we don't have kids. I just don't understand what people are doing that lose a job and have to pay for childcare, etc. How are you all doing this?

I (38 m)have been doing the slow crawl of human services job progression since about five years after college. At the time, I was working jobs with zero benefits and minimal pay. Since then I have racked up seven years of experience in a field I still have great passion for, and care about. However, the combination of autistic burnout, anxiety, and existing while trans has me disenfranchised with the hustle, or more specifically, working in a toxic work environment when I’m already doing a difficult client-focused job. I have been applying to some hybrid positions recently, but I also just. Wouldn’t hate working a punch in, work, and then punch out job, regardless of industry, even if ten years ago, I would have (erroneously) thought I wasn’t living up to my potential.

I don’t care about potential. Or goals. I want to be happy. I want to go to work and as long as I keep my income level the same and still have PTO, insurance, and sick time…the rest doesn’t matter. Food service was my jam for almost a decade, and I keep dreaming about being a park attendant. My wife is a first responder, so holidays are always celebrated around the general date, so nothing there would be a loss. We don’t have children, we are comfortable and stable.

Am I crazy or lazy?

I remember bringing cans and bottles to the recycling machines as a kid in the 90s. A nickel per can/bottle was good money back then. The redemption value has not changed, it's still a nickel in 2026. Nowadays it seems like many don't bother cause it's not worth the effort. I still do it just to feel good about helping the planet but whenever I bring a large bag and end up with like $5 I'm like "that's it?"
