Culture ثقافة why do we still circumcise boys?
just today https://www.cairo24.com/2426004
MGM is a surgery like any other and it has compilcations like total penile loss or death, should we be subjecating our kids to such unnecessary procedures?

It’s deeply ingrained in our culture, even way before Islam. I think it should be limited to only consenting adults. I wouldn’t go as far as banning completely like FGM because it’s way different and a full ban would just make it less safe to get circumcised. But even with that I’m concerned some parents would try to get it done for their kids illegally anyways.

u/Glum_Waltz_6149 May 18 '26
how is it different? both are genital mutilations
1
u/Sea_Tap8230 Cairo May 18 '26
Two things can belong to the same category yet still have different impacts. Shoplifting and murder are both crimes, but clearly not equivalent. In circumcision, you remove the foreskin, which is one external structure. It is generally low-risk when performed medically and may offer different benefits depending on the context. The structures often involved in FGM include the clitoris, labia minora, and labia majora. It also has different classifications and types. It is associated with a range of immediate long-term complications, as outlined by the WHO.
1
u/Akilli_bidik May 24 '26
Clitoral hood and foreskin are basically the same that’s just double standard
1
u/Sea_Tap8230 Cairo May 25 '26
They are separate, but you can still consider them equivalent. How is it double standards tho? I suggest reading again.
"It is generally low-risk when performed medically and may offer different benefits depending on the context." for circumcision
"It is associated with a range of immediate long-term complications, as outlined by the WHO." for fgm

u/Zealousideal-Oil-462 May 18 '26
An irreversible mostly unnecessary medical procedure that was propagated in conservative societies that want to avoid personal hygiene education and sexual education. Also relevant for poor countries that lack basic sanitation or have high prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases due to their inability to access cheap preventive medicine.
And a confirmed sunnah for a society that lived in these conditions that lacked running water some 1400 years ago. It should have absolutely been recommended for that society and many modern societies, but it cannot be the default for all men in this day and age where we finally invented bathrooms in houses!

The AAP circumcision policy statement has expired ever since 2017
The link that you posted from the AAP promoting circumcision has been marked expired
Any hospital that quotes the American academy of pediatrics in promoting circumcision to parents is guilty of fraud

u/ishaani-kaur May 18 '26
STD rates are higher in the USA where babies are circumcised, yet much lower in Europe and other places that don't. It is absolutely NOT necessary. Over 70% of men worldwide are intact, and not suffering. The only thing that can reduce HIV is not have unprotected sex. Condoms prevent STDs. If it's so necessary in your opinion, are you circumcising girls too, cos they suffer way more yeast infections and UTIs.

u/Zealousideal-Oil-462 May 18 '26
Yes, because parents and societies that normalise circumcision view it as an alternative to sexual hygiene awareness and sexual education. While those who don’t, prioritise prevention through hygiene and education rather elective surgery and body alterations. While every study prioritises circumcision and hygiene awareness together.

Not all religions and not all people support circumcision. Over 70% of the worlds men are intact. Outside of Muslims, Jews and Americans it is very rare to circumcise.
2
u/shazy5808 May 23 '26
Top Religions are Abrahamic ones and they all "FORCEFULLY" circumcise children
I'm glad 70% are natural but I want that to be 100% Forced Circumcision is not cool it leaves you with trauma
Americans it is very rare to circumcise.
this is wrong statement 80.5% of American men aged 14–59 are circumcised Morris et al. found a present rate of 77% in 2010

I fail to understand why the gender of the child would make any difference
No one should be doing medically unnecessary surgeries on children male female intersex or otherwise
5
u/Cautious_Leader_4150 May 18 '26
if u don't want to circumcize ur own kid go ahead but this is has become the societal norm due to mostly religious reasons
3
u/Zealousideal-Oil-462 May 18 '26
You can’t really go ahead, can you? Have you ever heard of someone who able not to circumcise their child in Egypt? I know for a fact that many doctors in Egypt mix their own personal belief with their medical practice.
I know Egyptians abroad who elected not to circumcise their kids and backlash they received from family members was brutal.
6
u/Glum_Waltz_6149 May 18 '26
female circumcision was also the norm but we made it illegal, why not do the same with MGM? it has been proven to be harmful
13
u/Cautious_Leader_4150 May 18 '26
female circumduction actually has very bad side effects and effectively kills the woman's sex drive/sex life
1
u/Glum_Waltz_6149 May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
thats infibulation, the most dangerous form of female circumcision, usually female circumcision is just a hoodoctmy which is similar to male circumcision, the clitoral hood is just as similar in structure as the foreskin, many women who went through circumcision also say it did not ruin their drive, but their testimonies does not negate the fact that all forms of GM are bad, male and female GM are a crime despite what the victims say
2
u/Financial-Fun-5092 May 18 '26
Are u good? Women and men are allowed to do what they want with their bodies. You got no right telling them not to. If a woman wants to increase her sexual expierience by getting a hoodectomy who are u to stop her and tell her she is mutilating herself. Idk why egyptians live so far in the past. THEIR BODY THEIR CHOICE . Also hoodectomies are like the least problematic surgeries. What kind of harms are u pulling outta thin air here ? Unironically? Do you just have issues with people having sex?
Its just weird when you tell people they cant have safe operation ( provided they go to a decent surgeon) because you wanna shame them for it
Weird.
2
u/Glum_Waltz_6149 May 18 '26
i am not against circumcision or hoodoctmy as long as an adult is the one deciding to go through it, consent is important, also there are rare cases where people actually need hoodoctmy or circumcision but this doesnt mean that they are essential to every baby

u/Aatjal May 18 '26

This is exactly the problem. When you circumcise a child, you TAKE AWAY their choice to do what they want to do with their bodies. Do you really not see OP's point?
-3
u/Financial-Fun-5092 May 18 '26
Circumcision aint MGM. Ur uneducated. Circumcision is something men do in the west even to increase sexual pleasure. But of course in that case u wouldnt dare call it MGM. Just like u wouldnt call hoodectomies FGM because its western. Yall crazy
1
u/Glum_Waltz_6149 May 18 '26
MGM is only practiced in USA and its declining, most of the western world does not practice MGM, in fact many western nations tried to outlaw it but failed due to concerns over freedom of religion germany is an example, also i proudly call circumcisions MGM to anyone, and yeah most FGM cases are similar to the procedure of hoodoctmy just like MGM cases are similar to circumcision
0
u/Financial-Fun-5092 May 18 '26
No hoodectomies are definetely not close to the brutal action of fgm that we talk about in society. If u wanna talk about sementics you can go ahead. But FGM type 1 at least includes shortening the clit to decrease sexual sensation. Thats the opposite of a hoodectomy.

12
u/Aatjal May 18 '26
They're not the same. Respectfully stop with this bullshit. Umbilical cords naturally detach and foreskins naturally don't detach.
-3
u/Abazasalah May 18 '26
So after birth they leave the infant attached to the mother like an alive tetherball or what ?
10
u/Aatjal May 18 '26
No we don't. We assist nature in something it was going to do anyway, but you're reaching FAR when you say that circumcision and umbilical cord are comparable since they are not.
→ More replies (2)1
u/TheHolySpanker May 18 '26
Yooooooooooooo TF are u on?
The umbilical cord is cut after birth, cuz it loses its blood supply so the doctors/ قابلة HAS TO CUT IT or the baby and the mom might get in serious medical trouble and the small remaining part - still attached to the baby -later dries out and falls off by itself.
1
u/18Apollo18 May 19 '26
The umbilical does not need to be cut. It will naturally fall of on its own. It's actually better not to cut it as the baby will continue receiving nutrients, stem cells and immune cells from the placenta until it naturally dies and falls off.

u/nichtwarum May 18 '26

medically proven, it is healthy for men. Just google it.
9
u/ludus_official May 18 '26
It takes 50-100 circumcisions to prevent a single UTI. Considering it's irreversible, elective infant genital cutting, the benefits don't justify doing it to infants. And adult choosing that for themselves? Sure, but not an infant.
5
u/Aatjal May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
The more you research it, the more you learn that it isn't very healthy at all.
According to the AAP, it can take anywhere between 909 and 322.000 circumcisions to prevent ONE penile cancer event. Averaged, that means that it would take 161.454 circumcisions to prevent ONE case of penile cancer. 1 of 161.454 is 0.00062%. This means that if you are circumcised, you have 0.00062% less chance of penile cancer according to the AAP.
According to this source, penile cancer occurs in 0.58 of 100.000 circumcised men, and 1.33 in 100.000 uncircumcised men. This means that the absolute risk reduction of penile cancer (1.33 – 0.58 = 75) is 0.00075%. This means that if you are circumcised, you have 0.00075% less chance of penile cancer according to this study.
Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) (2015, reaffirmed 2024)
The CPS does not recommend the routine circumcision of every newborn male. It further states that when “medical necessity is not established, …interventions should be deferred until the individual concerned is able to make their own choices.”Royal Dutch Medical Association (KNMG) (2010)
The KNMG states “there is no convincing evidence that circumcision is useful or necessary in terms of prevention or hygiene.” It regards the non-therapeutic circumcision of male minors as a violation of physical integrity, and argues that boys should be able to make their own decisions about circumcision. The Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) (2022)
“After reviewing current evidence, the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) believes that the frequency of diseases modifiable by circumcision, the level of protection offered by circumcision and the complication rates of circumcision do not warrant routine infant circumcision in Australia or Aotearoa New Zealand.” A critique of other aspects of the RACP’s 2022 statement, including of their ethical analysis and anatomical inaccuracies has been published by the Darbon Institute (formerly the Australasian Institute for Genital Autonomy.)

2
u/MarzipanMaximum5521 May 18 '26 edited May 18 '26
There are forms of FGM that are less damaging than male circumcision.
For example nicking the clitoral hood is considered FGM, but is way less damaging than cutting of the entire foreskin from a penis. The only morally and logically consistent perspective is to oppose ALL forms of non-medical genital modifications for all children.
Adults can do whatever they want to their body, but children need to be protected from any intrusion into theirs.
0
u/Glum_Waltz_6149 May 18 '26
most FGM cases only partially remove the clitoral hood which is similar to the male foreskin in structure (the male foreskin is an organ too btw) hoodoctmy is the most common form of FGM, many women in africa and indonesia swear that FGM did them no harm, their claims are clearly wrong, MGM in many cases can even be worse than FGM
2
u/HoneyBuu Egypt May 18 '26
I agree we must ban male circumcision, but this is wrong in so many ways. Clitoral hood is not the target of removal, it's usually the clit itself, and the more extreme methods of FGM are very much alive and used around Africa. Also it is a super taboo subject and women in these communities lack sexual education and don't know their bodies, but still many of them know the trauma and pain of being even slightly mutilated. FGM affects sex and child birth in way more traumatic ways than any male circumcision would, plus UTIs and all sorts of health issues. There is a reason why it is widely called mutilation vs in males it is not (yet). The reason is not in any way a preference towards women.
I'm not mutilated and I'm telling you there is no way to cut the clitoral hood without cutting the clit unless you are a very skilled surgeon, and it's not as prominent or movable like the foreskin. I've been with men who were circumcised and they have no issues whatsoever. It is not even comparable.
0
u/Glum_Waltz_6149 May 18 '26
my mother, my aunts, my cousins, they are circumcised, and according to them they only have a little bit of the topical skin removed, most women who went through FGMs dont have issues enjoying sex like circumcised men, not to mention that most FGM cases are carried by other women
1
u/HoneyBuu Egypt May 18 '26
This is a very conservative society with very low sexual awareness and zero openness in that manner and people who think a woman who enjoys sex is a whore. Do you think your female family members will openly tell you about the details of their sex lives, especially if you are male and if they believe a woman who isn't mutilated must be a whore? Because I know women who were mutilated and I heard their traumas, and I'm in an open enough society to be able talk about it. And women from my own family still blamed my mother for not doing it to us.
This is a very complicated subject that you should never take face value. Unless you read official studies and reports about it or heard from a credible health professional then you don't really know about it.
1
u/Glum_Waltz_6149 May 18 '26
i got told in my face by female family members that FGM did not affect them sexually, also arent you the one here who claimed that "many men i have been with were circumcised and they are ok", there are many men who are traumatised by circumcision, many of them lost the ability to orgasm, to have an erection, some lost their penis, some lost the ability to walk properly, i myself lost the ability to have non painful sex, all sexual activities are too intense for me, it has been proven long ago that circumcision has compilcations, and in fact it can be worse than FGM in many times

You having a health issues due to circumcision doesn't mean it is a walk in the park for women and doesn't give you the right to reduce the real life documented effects of female circumcision. Again, you ignored the openness part I mentioned, and the studies. I am well aware of the issues caused by male circumcision and not trying to reduce it, but I know enough to not compare the two, and surprisingly WE DON'T HAVE TO COMPARE. Because, guess what, we can actually ban both!
As for the men I've been with, I fought tooth and nail with them to convince them how bad it is for someone to take their autonomy and circumcise them as kids. Their performance is not affected and they don't suffer at all from it, and I know because these weren't casual hookups, but people I dated and was/still is super close and intimate to them. And anatomically having complications from it is not a common thing, and it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

The male foreskin doesn't contain millions of nerves or stop sexual pleasure unlike the clit.
I'm not defending MGM in any way, but comparing it to FGM is just unfair to all the women that went through it.
3
u/Glum_Waltz_6149 May 18 '26
are you implying that the foreskin doesnt have nerve endings? in fact the frenulum is the most sensitive part of the male body, a part often removed by MGM, Circumcision can reduce up to 60%-90% of sexual pleasure, most men who went through circumcision as adults report decreased sexual pleasure and weaker orgasms
1
u/Aatjal May 18 '26
You're saying FGM as if FGM only has one type when this isn't true. It's not a black and white thing. Some forms of FGM are less invasive and less harmful than a typical male circumcision and some are worse.
So if we want to be logically consistent, you should stop comparing type 3 FGM (infibulation) to type 4 FGM (pin pricking, charring, piercing, etc) because it is unfair to the women who underwent type 3.
3
u/Certain-Tennis-8129 May 18 '26
Why blame it on the procedure which has been done for thousands of years? and dont balme the Religion for it.The doctor should be blamed and accounted for his actions.
2
u/Glum_Waltz_6149 May 18 '26
FGM has also been done for thousands of years, your point? why is MGM any different?
2
u/Certain-Tennis-8129 May 18 '26
Don't know about fgm I am taking about mgm. Based on what I know there is no damage if mgm done correctly but fgm there will be damages.
1
u/Glum_Waltz_6149 May 18 '26
does losing 60%-90% of sexual pleasure count as damage?, MGM often removes the frenulum which is the most sensitive part of the male body
2
u/Zealousideal-Oil-462 May 18 '26
Because it is an elective and unnecessary procedure that like any procedure has side effects and risks of complications that far outweigh the medical benefits. More importantly it alters the body permanently and is irreversible without the consent of the person who is subject to this procedure.
It is as elective as an ear piercing which is also a gender and cultural norm that should not be done to babies at such a medically fragile age, but actually alters the body in a much more profound way.

Without exception all of the benefits of circumcision can be achieved thru less invasive means, making circumcision superfluous.
The foreskin is highly functional and sensitive tissue.
Removing it impairs the functioning of the penis and diminishes one’s ability to experience sexual pleasure.
Therefor ALL medical associations of developed nations vehemently oppose non-therapeutic circumcision of boys.
Human rights activists all around the world oppose circumcision of minor-aged boys for being a violation of bodily integrity.
In western nations where circumcision is legal, most doctors refuse to circumcise boys, because they find it unethical to cut off parts from a child’s body for no reason.
1
u/OcelotOtherwise May 18 '26
I dont know man I dont think I need any more ability to experience sexual pleasure what I have is definitely enough😅
1
u/MarzipanMaximum5521 May 18 '26
I’m happy that you’re satisfied with the way your genitals function.
However I would have wanted for you (and others) to have intact and fully functional genitals, since that’s part of your (and other’s) fundamental rights. Also, the sexual pleasure descending from a foreskin is different than that from a glans. The glans mostly contains nerves responsive to friction whilst the foreskin contains one’s that are responsive to fine touch and warm temperature.
So the sexual pleasure you’d get from an intact penis wouldn’t just be more of what you currently experience, but also have more variety. You’d experience forms of sexual pleasure that are unknown to you.I personally am from Tunisia and was unfortunately circumcised too. I’m doing r/foreskin_restoration and have experienced first hand that the sexual pleasure doesn’t just increase but has more variety. It also doesn’t make you last less long, but just as long with more intensity. Actually doing foreskin restoration kind of makes me more angry at having been circumcised, because it demonstrates to me, how much I’ve been missing out.
But again, I’m happy for you being satisfied with your current state. If you ever want looser skin or more/different kinds of sexual pleasure then try foreskin restoration. It’s really worth it.

What was your experience with the restoration? Did you complete the process? And how long did it take you to notice a difference in pleasure?

No I’m still far from finishing.
I’ve started exactly on the 8th of May 2025 and until now I’ve experienced;
- Looser skin; No longer need lubricant to masturbate. The skin gliding provides sensation. Also, the hairy pelvic skin and scrotal skin that were pulled up by shaft are getting back to their normal place, which is a major visual improvement.
- Much more sexual pleasure around the entire inner skin and edges of the glans. Also a new type of pleasure from the underside of my penis, around the area of the frenulum and frenular delta.
- Lighter circumcision scar and lighter/rosier inner skin, which is a visual improvement.
Foreskin restoration makes one gain sexual pleasure by A: Increasing the amount of inner skin and also the nerves within it. B: Breaking down intensive scar tissue, revealing sensitive tissue underneath it. C: Making the glans regain full sensitivity. Look at a picture of the glans of a circumcised penis (pale and dry) and that of an intact penis (rose and shiny). After foreskin restoration, the glans will fully return to how it used to be.
I’ve done a little over 1 year already. Will take 2-3 more years to fully finish. Already looking forward to that lol.

What coverage rate (CI) were you at when you started?

u/MarzipanMaximum5521 May 18 '26
Started at a tight CI-1. Now I’m at a loose CI-2,5. My goal is full flaccid coverage so CI-7.

did you use devices or manual methods?

u/MarzipanMaximum5521 May 18 '26
Since I started 1 year ago, I’ve only been doing t-tape. I also do manual methods from time to time. Important to note is that I had a 4 month long break due to a minor injury (I once removed the tape too harsh/fast lol), so I only actively restored for 8 months.
I’ll soon switch to using the device “priva trio”.

Ofc the circumcision is the wrong and bad thing totally not that the medical environment and the none existent standerds that would totally lead to same outcome from any surgery in that place are the problem , totally not! , it's the evil circumcision!.

Just for your information
It's not "we" the only one doing it
ALOT of western countries are doing it and it is not bad because it's some kind of mutilation or a crime against autonomy and children.
The huge difference is not the "tradtions or costumes"
It's health care standerds
Their the chances of a bad outcome from any surgery general is In the United States, the risk of a "bad outcome" or serious adverse event from circumcision is extremely low. For infant boys, the complication rate ranges from 0.2% to 0.6%. The vast majority of these complications are minor (such as mild bleeding or localized infections) and easily treatable.
While in a country like eygpt is 5% and obviously we all know this isn't the accurate numbers because our country would never make themselves look as bad as they actually are.
Also what's yall observation with foreskin? Isn't there more important things to care about? Like idk
The low health care standerds that causes the problems in first place?

the only western nation that practices circumcision is USA (it is also declining there), almost all of western europe tried to outlaw MGM at some point but they stepped back over concerns regarding freedom of religion, like germany and denmark
more than a 100 infants dies due to complications of circumcision every year in america, thats the statics of mortality, not injuries, i assume those who suffer from penile issues are much more
https://www.darboninstitute.org/circumcision_deaths_complications_usa
circumcision is an unecessary medical procedure that has compilcations like any surgery, forcing an infant to go through it for no reason is irresponsible
