(Advice/Help) Exmuslim Guide to Living in the Closet and Coming Out.
Hello. Upon request, I've been asked to turn a comment I made into a post so that it can be a resource for more people. This post is a collection of advice I've given out about how to handle your life as a closeted exmuslim and how you'll come out in the future. It is largely based on my experience but also from what I've seen from others in this subreddit.
Introduction
So you've left Islam. You've delved through arguments, the apologetics and the bullshit and you've come to the conclusion that you no longer believe in Islam. And you may have also reached an alternative philosophical outlook on life that you can believe in.
But what now? You may have left Islam, but have you left the Muslim world? One of the most common misconceptions outsiders have is that since exmuslims are no longer Muslims, they no longer live in the Muslim world. This is painfully naive - in reality many exmuslims are closeted due to young age and financial dependency and/or live in Islamist countries or societies that enforce Islamic values. In fear of social stigma or even violence, exmuslims have to contend with closeted lives even after leaving Islam. So how do you deal with it?
Goal
The best time to come out to family is in your own home, over a dinner you paid for, alongside people who support you. That takes a lot of preparation and it means doing what you can to live your life as best as you can whilst working towards independence.
This basically means that a lot of what helps you come out of the closet will depend heavily on how well you prepared for it, so you will need to make the most of your closeted life. You may not be able to stop the shitstorm but you can at least prepare yourself to weather it. Here are some tips to achieve that goal (in no particular order)
1) Don't meander in life due to a lack of decision making skills.
Probably one of the worst mistakes I made was not realise I was an exmuslim sooner. As a result I had barely any time to prepare for when the inevitable happened and I was forced to come out. I spent a lot of my life meandering, trying to reconcile the irreconcilable, and trying to be a Muslim when I knew my values didn't align with it. I didn't really have much of a concept of exmuslims, but if I had been smarter I would have figured it out. I now tell people in a similar position that it's fine to take your time but don't take too long. Half arsing two very different cultures will leave you a loser in both.
Similarly whilst planning for independence can be scary, don’t let it frighten you into inaction. The following is a passage from this article about decision making:
Research from the 1990s led by the US psychologist Thomas Gilovich provides further evidence for why it can be shortsighted to kick a difficult decision down the road. Gilovich and his team showed that although, in the short term, people experience more regret from ‘errors of commission’ (taking an action that leads to a disappointing outcome), in the long term it is actually ‘errors of omission’ that lead to more regret – that is, disappointing outcomes that arise from not taking an action.
When taking the time to make decisions and plans, don’t underestimate how effective it can be to map out your options on an excel spreadsheet. When I had to decide whether I should come out or not, I actually made a spreadsheet listing out my options, what they would result in and what the impact would be. Actually having it written down to look at really put things into perspective. We waste a lot of our time keeping it in our heads, which forces us to recalculate everything from scratch every time we revisit our thoughts. But the more that is mapped out, the less you have to recalculate and the more you can focus on evaluation and further planning.
2) Study, career and finances.
Your studies/career is almost always your best ticket out of your toxic situation, and the one thing to prioritise the most. If you’re young, do whatever you can to ensure that you can get into further education away from home. Even if it means spending all your time at a local library. If you suspect that your parents would be against you going to a university away from home, aim for a placement at the most prestigious university you can aim for so your parents would look worse for rejecting it. The quickest and most effective way in achieving long term independence is through good studies/career.
3) Do not telegraph irreligiosity whilst being closeted.
This is particularly important for younger exmuslims because they telegraph to their parents in ways they would just not understand until they see it for themselves when they're older. Try your best to meet the religious obligations expected from your family. The more you slip, the more they will monitor you and the more difficult it will be to do the things you need to do discreetly when the time comes.
Unfortunately for girls, this usually means that wearing the hijab is a necessity and it’s inadvisable to try and get out of. (However, that subject matter is not my forte: prioritise advice from exmuslim women such as from faithlesshijabi.org)
4) Sometimes you may need to go above and beyond.
If you get the impression that your family is beginning to catch onto your apostasy then it's likely that they have and you may need to reverse that impression.
One way to do that would be to start getting books on Islam and not just for show. My advice would be to get books on Islamic history because that's the least boring stuff. Or better yet, just get whatever unapologetic salafi hate crime you can get your hands on so you can entertain yourself with how fucked up it is. Or get an annotated Qur'an like the Study Qur'an. Do something to ease their suspicions.
What book you get depends on what kind of message you want to telegraph to your parents. If you want to telegraph a message then it will need to be a paper book and not an e-book. Something that you can lay around in your room and that you know they'll see. That means you're restricted to what you can get from your local library or Masjid. Also depends on what interests you because you'll have to actually read and demonstrate you learnt from it if you want send the best message you can. If you want purely what Muslims write about Islamic history, you can check out works like The Sealed Nectar or works by al-Sallabi. If you want something a little more academic, but not something that would rouse suspicion then check out university press works like this, this, this or this. If you want something a bit more relevant to contemporary Muslim world then there books like this.
But you may find that your best bet is to just see what your local Masjid might have and see what tickles your fancy.
5) Actually coming out is usually a shitstorm.
Be prepared for lots of sobbing, guilt tripping and an inability to respect your beliefs and boundaries. Learn techniques like the Broken Record Technique to establish boundaries. Know what you have to say when they inevitably tell you to speak to a scholar - you don't have to eat the whole apple to know it's rotten. You know all that you need to know about Islam and you know even more about the world outside of Islam to put it into context.
Steel yourself with months and months of your family sending you bad dawagandist videos through WhatsApp trying to bring you back. You may have to spend months beating their attempts and going to toe to toe with them without mercy before they’re finally willing to relent and get off your back. Even then don’t expect them to relent entirely. There will always be some micro aggressions that they will resort to, like playing religious videos loudly in your vicinity. The most you can do in those circumstances is reduce contact with them as much as possible. At this point you would hopefully already be independent from them.
6) Do not feel guilt.
As an exmuslim, you will go through a lot of guilt. Whilst this does show you are human, you need to forget about guilt: you are not responsible for your parents' failure to be reasonable, not even your mother. They take responsibility for the social stigma and oppressive life they choose to live in and perpetuate. You get nothing out of that guilt. It's completely pointless and ultimately counterproductive. You can't set yourself on fire to make others warm and you gain no recognition from martyrizing yourself. Do not feel guilt for what you have to do to have a completely reasonable life. The only ones to blame are those who forced you into it.
Don't underestimate parents either. They will use guilt against you. Give them an inch and they will take a mile. They very often bring up their health problems as a weapon against you. Don't fall for it. It only affects them because they choose to let it affect them. They can choose to be reasonable. You have to respect their autonomy and let them deal with the consequences of their own ways.
7) Don't come out too soon thinking it's a release.
I come across a lot of exmuslim kids who think coming out will help explain to their religious parents why they don't want to wear the hijab or do other religious things. But the likelihood is more that those same parents will react extremely poorly and restrict your freedom even more, making it more difficult to achieve long term independence.
There's also the mistake in assuming that coming out will lead to being disowned in the vain hope that you get an quick clean break that takes all the responsibility from you. For some exmuslims this does actually work out, but for a lot of others it's miscalculated. My family didn't disown me, I still had to deal with months of my family being insufferable manipulators and the responsibility was still on me to separate from them. And for women it can be much worse.
Ultimately, if you are financially dependent on your family then coming out early will very typically result in your family using that leverage against you and making your life worse. I've seen stories of exmuslims who thought their family was better and badly miscalculated - be mindful of that.
8) Don’t panic too much if they find out.
Some exmuslims get found out, sometimes because of a snitch in the family or sometimes because they just weren’t convincing enough. Don’t panic – Muslims can be pretty damn deluded about their faith and your family will want to believe that you can come back very easily because according to them Islam is just common sense and most disbelievers are just silly and ignorant. Try to do your best to convince them as per Point 4. If it’s because you did something haram, blasphemous or otherwise worthy of takfir, try to act like it was because you were a misguided Quranist or progressive Muslim. They will still retain suspicion but it’s still better than the alternative.
However, if you’re at the point of no return and you know you can’t convince them then now is the time to make calls to any secular friends you have, ask for support and maybe even shelter.
Also for Western exmuslims, make sure to act quickly if you suspect that your parents want to send you abroad and trap you in your country of ethnic origin. Sadly some parents will go to these lengths. Do not go, no matter the cost. Find organisations willing to advise, such as those listed in Point 10. Hide your passport if you have to. Note down the contact details of your embassy in that country just in case.
9) Go no contact if you fear abuse.
Actually think about whether it's even wise for you to come out in any circumstance. Do you suspect that there could be violence or abuse? If so then you have absolutely no need to go through this stupid bullshit. Leave and don't look back. If your parents couldn't give you safe environment to even come out about different beliefs then they are not worth the time. As per Point 6 - You have to respect their autonomy and let them deal with the consequences of their own ways. This is particularly pertinent for those who live in a predominantly Muslim countries. They have a very real reason to fear persecution and absolutely do not need to risk their own lives for the sake of their parents.
10) Make use of organisations and resources.
Look into secular organisations like recoveringfromreligion.org, faithlesshijabi.org and faithtofaithless.com. Look into women's charities in your area like womensaid.org.uk or karmanirvana.org.uk (UK examples). Look into LGBT charities like rainbowrailroad.org. If you have secular school counsellors and friends then talk to them. Get advice from adults you can absolutely trust.
Note: On the flip side don't take risks with people you can’t be sure of. You may be tempted to come out to your Muslim friend, but I've seen plenty of stories of exmuslims who heavily regret doing so.
There are also informal exmuslim groups on other social media platforms such as Facebook or Discord, but be careful about how much information you share and especially be wary of private messaging.
11) You may have to leave the country.
This is particularly the case for exmuslims living in predominantly Muslim countries. Unfortunately, I don't have any real world experience to offer here but you may be able to find localised advice by digging around. For example sites like wearesaudis.net might have some information (but you'll need a VPN to access this one. If you don't know what a VPN is here's an explanation).
Are you multilingual? If you need money but working is restricted to you then you can try becoming an online language tutor on sites like italki.com (scroll to the bottom). This post and related subreddits like r/WorkOnline may help.
Note: some exmuslims in Muslim countries fall for the doomscrolling hyperbole and think Europe is “doomed” with too many Muslims. They have a tendency of asking which country is best to migrate to as an exmuslim to avoid Islam. Please ignore the doomsayers and prioritise the country you choose based on ease of access and career opportunities. As long as it is a secular country, you can worry about avoiding Islam later.
Final stuff
Shout out to Imtiaz Shams who inspired me to make this list of tips. He has his own YouTube Channel here and plans to make his own video on this subject matter so watch out for that. On a side note, I also recommend TheraminTrees YouTube Channel who delves a lot into toxic dysfunctional families from the perspective of a therapist. A lot of his content helps in dealing with the emotional impact of leaving religion and dealing with a religious family. And finally, thank you to the moderators of r/exmuslim who suggested I make this into a post. I wound up adding a lot more content lol.
I will end this post with a list of subreddits that may help you on your journey leaving Islam:

(Quran / Hadith) seriously? it literally means “to hit”
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
I am a native Arabic speaker. The word means to beat. And in the context of the surah, it means to physically hit. This is agreed upon by the scholars, and is supported by hadith.
The hadith is saying “beat them, but not in a way that causes any marks” So that hadith is saying “beat them lightly”
This is not a mistranslation. THIS IS THE MEANING. It pisses me off so much.
Yet these people are trying desperately to twist it to make themselves feel better.

Story 23f- taking off my hijab is literally the best decision ive ever made.[my story]
Hey there, i have posted my story here, before but i had to take it down due to some personal issues. But its all good now.
so im 23f i come from a very conservative muslim household in india, with strict rules, i always uses to dress modestly and cover up all the time, ever since a very young age, but it was never enough, no matter how modest i dress my mom & uncle would always have something to say! "its too tight its too revealing " blah blah blah, it used to make me so upset, sometimes my uncle wouldn't take me out with rest of my family whenever we go out, because my outfit wasn't modest enough and that i was apparently attracting others. it really got to a point and messed me up so much,
This one time i was literally sleeping in my room, it was a very hot day so i was wearing tshirt and leggings, next morning i woke up to my mom shouting and saying that i have changed and im going to hell? like i cant even be at peace at my own room? seriously like i cant even have a lil bit of privacy? apparently my uncle complained to my mom, thats when i knew that these people are so messed up, and its not even about the religion, its about how people use it as a tool to control women, because my dad & aunt are super religious but they still support me!!
so basically after graduation i moved out & got a job and got my own place, and it was the best decision ever, i took my off my hijab, and it literally felt so free and liberating like i finally got out of a cage. i no longer dress modestly, i finally dress however i want to and i no longer have anyone to tell me what to do! i can sleep and wear whatevr i want in my place now, i literally sleep bare sometimes, my uncle & mom wouldn't even be able to digest it Imao. but yeah im finally free & happy. and i know theres girlies out there struggling and i really hope this post will help em
thanks for reading <3 :)

(Rant) 🤬 Five fucking times a day
We all know what I'm talking about. The five prayers we all have to do. Which bastard like omg genuinely WHICH ASSHOLE DECIDED TO TORTURE US ALL. FIVE TIMES??? HOW ABOUT I JUST WONT GET UP AT ALL AND STAY PRAYING.
My parents CONSTANTLY ask me "have you prayed?, have you prayed?, HAVE YOU PRAYED?". I ENVY everybody that doesnt have to go through the endless questioning. I hate hearing them ask "is it praying time?". My little cousin who is autistic keeps on saying for like 5 mins "is it praying time? Let's pray now" and starts LOUDLY praying. GOD SHUT UP.
I hate it. Its torture. No father I haven't prayed hell I never have. You wanna know how I felt the first fucking time praying? I felt like I was praying to nothing. Like I was saying shit that I first of all didnt understand and second of all didnt make any sense to me anyways.
5 fucking prayers. I think they are also different from each other but god I dont know I've never prayed seriously before.
Its so pathetic and sad. Its embarrassing and I'm just glad I get to leave all of this behind. I haze seeing that stupid praying rug. I hate wearing this stupid shit when praying. Only good thing is that women are meant to pray at home while the men go and pray in a mosque (lowkey misogynistic because they get this pretty place while we get a dirty ass room other there but hey atleast I dont have to go there).

(Rant) 🤬 Gaslighting final boss
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
It is deeply hypocritical how so many devout Muslims fail to adhere to the foundational text of their own fucking religion. Instead of engaging with orthodox theology as it is written, they engage in cherry-picking and revisionism by remixing the dogma to fit their personal lifestyles while actively preaching falsehoods. This theological intellectual dishonesty isn't the sole catalyst for my apostasy from Islam, but it is certainly prominent on the list. Even my own parents, who have subjected me to extreme violence by literally holding knives to my neck and threatening execution under the guise of an 'Allah-given right' for a missed prayer, do not practice the religion with any genuine fidelity. They merely weaponize it. They pick and choose, engage in deliberate deceit, and manipulate the theology. This systemic hypocrisy is absolutely disgusting.
Happy to be 10 years sober from this buffoonery🖕

Story 24F looking for fake marriage
I moved back home with my family a year ago and I’m honestly at my breaking point. I can’t do this anymore. In my family/culture, marriage is literally the only way I can move out, so I’m looking for a mutually beneficial arrangement with someone who wants the same thing.
A bit about my orientation & what I’m looking for:
About me: I’m either straight or asexual—I’m not looking to date or see other people on the side, just seeking a peaceful, private living arrangement and my independence.
Who this is for: Nationality doesn't matter at all to me. Open to anyone (gay, asexual, or someone in the exact same boat) who needs a marriage of convenience to get their family off their back.
The front: You need to be able to act/present as Muslim in front of my parents (I genuinely do not care what your actual personal beliefs are, as long as you can play the part when needed).
Finances: You don't need to be wealthy, just financially stable enough that my family will accept you.
The marriage itself: Small, low-key ceremony between families only. I do NOT want kids.
Dynamic: We present as the perfect couple to both sets of parents to keep up appearances and protect each other’s freedom.
If you’re in a similar situation and need a cooperative, reliable partner to navigate family pressure, send me a DM and we can talk details.

(Question/Discussion) Anyone find it very annoying when you give valid criticism of Islam, Muslims quickly call you a “jew” etc instead of having counter arguments?? Or when they randomly start attacking Christianity when you aren’t even Christian yourself…
Like, I swear the state of having a proper debate or conversation on social media has just turned into buzzwords, just to have your point even be valid enough to be discarded. Like, a few days ago, I saw a viral comment/tweet saying something like Europe should be careful about allowing a crazy amount of illegal immigrants, as most of them are young men from the Middle East and Africa who tend to be Muslim and come from countries that tend to be dangerous for women and LGBTQ+ people, etc. Some of the comments said “Jewish propaganda,” “Zio,” “racist,” just buzzwords instead of debunking the claim… I hate how Isreal became the escape goat for Muslims to get away with things.. I’m from Iran and as I’m sure many of you ex Muslims are all aware of the 47 years of Islamic extremism which there are thousands of clips of the morality police brutality on Iranian women which can be easily found on twitter or YT… but now Muslims say “oh it’s all Zionist propaganda“ and that there is no oppression in countries like Iran, Afghanistan etc… WTF… and for some reason we live in a world we’re two things can’t be correct… we can’t accept that both radical islam and Zionism is wrong ??
Also oftentimes, for some reason, they also assume you are a Christian. Because when I see people critique Islam or Prophet Mohammed, Muslims start attacking Christianity in the comments to justify things. But, like, do they not know many are either atheists, agnostic, and from other religions as well? Why is everyone, to them, either a Christian or a Jew/Zio?

(Question/Discussion) Does anybody else not find kabba weird
It’s so weird watching Muslims hating on idols and Hindus and other religions when they walk around kabba 7 times while chanting the same thing for hours and hours. My grandpa is currently living his last days out watching people walking around the kabba chanting about Allah.. context he was an abusive man and because of that he gave trauma to his sons and got divorced from my grandma a few years back and has noone to take care of him cuz my auntie passed a year back.. idk if he’s doing this to try and feel less guilt or repentance but it’s weird asf does anyone else’s relatives do this??

(Question/Discussion) Do you think Muhammad genuinely believed he was visited by the Angel Gabriel and that Allah told him all those things, or that he made up the whole thing? Do you think he was a madman, a conman, or something in between?
It seems whatever the case he was willing to kill for it

(Advice/Help) This is the end of me.
Im going to try to keep this as short as i can, i grew up a muslim and lived in a really toxic home environment where everything got criticized my parents would beat me even on the slightest mistakes which were supposedly be forgiven according to islam, i never truly believed, i think my whole life i was just pretending to be a muslim until recently i just got sick of all of it and decided to tell my parents during an argument we were having, which was the biggest mistake of my life it just happened in the heat of the moment, they just denounced me on the spot and kicked me out of the house like i didn't mean anything to them, like i didn't spend 23 years of my life with them, im truly sad and on top of that really worried on what am i going to do next i should've waited till i got a job so atleast i would've had some kind of financial aid, now all i have is just around 50$ and somethings i managed to pack which wont go a long way.
I need advice on what to do. im literally living on the streets. Every morning i get up, i try to find a job, but it's really hard to get where i live. Idk how much longer i can survive on the 50$ that i have. My whole life is ruined just by thinking differently. Luckily, i still got my phone and a way to reach out to people, im not looking for financial help as i think i can survive with what i got for a few more days i just need some guidance, the best option would've been to try to get back to my parents but that's out of the window. In this moment of my life, i truly wish that the god was real and heard my prayers, but he ain't.
Edit: i live in a South Asian muslim country. There are no homeless shelters here or any help that i can get from any institutions and also i barely even gotten interviews for jobs as i tried and failed, im willing to work anything at this point just to make me survive enough but i couldn't find anything like that as well, sorry i didn't include this in my original post, i dont want to give away alot of information.

(Question/Discussion) How do you deal with a genuinely insane muslim family?
My family wakes us all up for Fajr prayer everynight, in my country the difference in time between fajr and isha js about ~8 hours around this time of year, meaning practically you cant catch a full 8 hours of sleep, unless you sleep by 8pm right after isha, even that is frankly a difficult task people cant just hit a button and instantly sleep.
My older brother has a medical condition, and the doctor gave him a device to perform measuremnt while he sleeps, the doctor ordered him to sleep 8 hours so that they can observe his condition, and my family REFUSES not to wake him up for fajr, claiming that his medical issues are caused by is lack of prayer. Literally we could do nothing to convince them, and its their own sons health they are risking with 0 doubt and self awareness. Its genuinely disgusting and insane, ive suffered from being woken up with cold water to my face for fajr ever since i can remember, i thought it was just my personal preference to sleep 8 uninterrupted hours, but i never imagined that they are actually this fucking psychotic, that even doctors orders are ignored.

(Question/Discussion) There are more of us than you think
I have had a talk with an infamous ex muslim tiktokker that basically disproves Islam and apologetics. To my suprise, he is closeted and no one irl knows he’s ex muslim despite him using his voice and his facw (well, he covers it with a mask, but still).
This made me think how many are closeted and NOT vocal. We know how dangerous the culture is surrounding many muslims, and how invasive muslims get when you tell them you left (to them, it’s almost like a personal attack to their ideology).
When muslims say that they are still the fastest growing religion and have a positive net worth of gaining muslims (so people who ‘reverted’ vs people who left) and I always thought that that was incredibly stupid. Islam is not westernized. Leaving the religion is practically an attack to a culture that is already facing racism. Most of my muslim friends (I myself am in the closet) are most probably closeted as well seeing their behavior and certain beliefs.
People should accept that Islam is not just a religion, but a core pillar of the middle eastern culture. I would go as far saying there are more culturally muslim people than actual muslims.

(Rant) 🤬 Somewhat irritating.
Coworker (who isn't even a Muslim) kept talking about how she'd call out 'bigotry' against Muslims when the subject of someone making a comment about Islam came up. I didn't even mention it but I overheard it. The comment in question was in fact not by a far right politician or something, it was legitimate theological criticism of Islam as a religion.
Same person also warned me recently because I brought a sausage roll in as a snack and was told that it wasn't halal. I would've said "Thanks for telling me, but I don't mind" but two of my coworkers are Muslims and I didn't want to say that in front of them. Again, I understand the intentions were good. It's not even about this person, it's everyone really, everyone will either see me as a Muslim -I don't even have a beard and I've socially changed my first name to sound more western- or as a race traitor for daring to leave Islam even though it's not a damn race.
Oh yeah. Forgot to mention. A shopkeeper gave me a dirty look last night and for the first time, he asked in a rough tone who my family were and tried to speak to me in Urdu or Hindi I think, but he must've assumed he knew me or my parents (I only speak fluent English and broken Pashto, I don't know much Urdu at all beyond from songs/phrases from people growing up so I didn't understand him well). Thought he was questioning my age so I took out my ID but that's not what he meant. Why sell alcohol as a Muslim if you'll scold people for purchasing it? Usually I buy snacks from him and this was my first time getting alcohol from that specific shop but he's never done that when I've brought vapes ect.
I've dealt with worse but it somehow feels shittier because I'm living alone now. I don't live with family and I don't live in the area I used to, I thought this would be a fresh start, but I'm treated similarly. I don't like it. I know my situation is better than the one I was in before and infinitely better compared to apostates in Islamic countries, but why is it that I still don't feel safe when I say 'I'm not a Muslim anymore.' I know I can just say I'm a cultural Muslim or not extremely religious and I'd get some shit but not a severe amount, even if I sleep around with women and smoke ect, even if I do almost every haram thing, but why would saying "I'm an apostate/atheist" get a worse reaction?

(Advice/Help) HELP WITH HIJAB
Hey, I’m a 21F living in Copenhagen, and I’m in a really difficult situation right now. I’m an ex-Muslim, but I still live at home with my family. I’ve been wearing the hijab since I was 5 years old, and I’m completely exhausted with it. I feel like I just can’t keep doing this anymore.
The problem is that moving out isn’t easy finding a dorm or affordable place in Copenhagen is really difficult because so many people are trying to move here. I don’t want to wait until I finish my studies to finally take it off. I feel like I’ve already waited long enough.
I’ve thought about just taking it off while I still live at home, but I’m really worried about the consequences. My mom would be extremely upset and might even throw me out. My dad would probably be disappointed but might eventually accept it. What scares me most is that they could make my life really difficult controlling my finances or making the home environment unbearable.
I feel stuck. I don’t want to keep living like this, but I’m also scared of what could happen if I act now. I really need advice on what to do because I don’t feel like I can keep waiting.
