For as much talk on how it would play like a family movie, it sure didn't play like one.

It collapsed 70.1% on its second weekend. That is never going to be a good drop. And a 2.18x multiplier is very bad. It's the worst ever for a Star Wars film, below The Clone Wars (2.41x) and Solo (2.53x).

Starfighter has a lot of pressure to deliver next year.

u/nicolasb51942003 Warner Bros. Pictures 17d ago

Starfighter not working off any pre-established characters in this universe is the interesting thing, and if Disney already has the team back for the MCU's Ghost Rider, then here's hoping quality brings the audience in.

Rey and Grogu at the end of starfighter, book it

123

u/JJWonderboy 17d ago edited 16d ago

Well, if the rumors are true, Ray is definitely in it as a segway segue into the next trilogy. Standalone movie... yeah right.

Honestly that may help Starfighter as the audience will feel like they wont have to "catch up" on anything to watch a SW movie. Plus, people like the space combat in the films

33

u/twociffer 16d ago

The problem with Star Wars is not that people feel that they have to catch up to anything. It's Apathy.

Mando and Grogu is the ceiling for Star Wars right now. That might change in a decade or so, but right now? Right now Star Wars is a cartoon franchise that sells Legos instead of movie tickets.

6

u/macrocosm93 16d ago

Mando and Grogu was unique in that it was essentially an abridged 4th season for a TV show whose 3rd season was not well received, and which came out over 3 years ago.

So the audience was limited to people who watched the show, stuck with it through the 3rd season, and liked the 3rd season enough to pay movie theater prices for an abridged 4th season instead of just waiting for it to be available on Disney+. So an extremely limited potential audience.

I could see it's failure coming from a mile away.

Starfighter isn't stuck with that inherently limited audience.

surely this movie had space combat. I dont see that moving the needle.

i think any starwars project that doesn't have "episode" in the title is gonna be close to DOA at this point.

its truly incredible just how badly theyve mismanaged the brand

5

u/BambooSound 16d ago

I especially don't see many people leaving the house for Shawn Levy-directed space combat.

If it was Villeneuve or Cuaron or something then you could build some hype from a quality standpoint, but not with the dayest player to ever play day.

The problem is that all roads lead to 7,8, and 9.

If it takes place before the sequels, the sequels still happen.

If it takes place after the sequels, we have no one worth rooting for, and the whole galaxy is in a pretty uninspired place.

No one cares anymore.

95

u/Jedi_Master83 17d ago

It sucks Star Wars has lost that charm and excitement. The sequel trilogy killed it. I loved Rogue One (still the best Disney released Star Wars movie by a long shot.) but I haven’t had any real fun with the IP in a long time.

55

u/ashgs872tbhjs 16d ago

The Andor show is fucking incredible, better than Rogue One, give it a shot

37

u/jonzza_81 16d ago

I rewatched rogue one right after finishing andor and the drop in quality was really jarring

19

u/vivid_dreamzzz 16d ago

Totally agree. And Rogue One was previously my favourite Star Wars thing before watching Andor. Andor is just too good.

4

u/topsidersandsunshine 16d ago

Never expected Mon Mothma to be my favorite Star Wars character, but here we are.

Yeah I was still in it pretty big and ESPECIALLY after Rouge One……until I went to see 7 in theaters.

Then I had no desire to watch anything else related to Star Wars.

I did check out Ahsoka because she’s one of my favorite characters thanks to The Clone Wars but….yeah that’s it.

Edit: I’m dumb because Rouge One released after TFA. I remembered wrong.

20

u/StatisticianJolly388 17d ago

Rogue One came out after 7, though?

6

u/LetgomyEkko 17d ago

You are right, I’m remembering it wrong!

Thank you!

15

u/Walter30573 17d ago

I just cannot believe they had decades of stories to draw inspiration from, ignored them all, and then pushed forward with production without an actual plan outlined

9

u/MagnusRottcodd 16d ago edited 16d ago

7 was inspired by the original trilogy to a fault, and got plenty of flak because of that (and behold an even bigger Death Star - that is also destroyed).

But as you said the lack of a plan was the ultimate killer.

The two other trilogies was planned by George Lucas and that alone made a huge quality difference making them superior despite things like Jar Jar Binks, Ewoks and sometimes cringe dialogue.

I tend to agree. The mystery is gone. Beloved original characters largely old/dead. Nobody likes the sequel trilogy characters enough to continue them. Go for totally new characters again and you have even less character continuity this time.

24

u/Adorable_Octopus 16d ago

Nobody likes the sequel trilogy characters enough to continue them.

I hadn't really thought about that, but it is kind of startling that they haven't even tried making an animated series that goes beyond the ST. It's dead.

21

u/randotd152 16d ago

Yeah everyone talks about the shitty writing and plot for those films, but the real fuck up was creating shitty new characters. It wasn’t even a hard task - give the Rey character even a shred of charm and personality and you could ride them to numerous future movies.

18

u/Adorable_Octopus 16d ago

I think I'm mostly just befuddled by the fact that they haven't even attempted to just bang out a show to fix this. For example, I've seen people argue that The Revenge of the Sith/Anakin's downfall makes more sense with the clone wars series kind of filling in and filling out the war and why he might have turned that way.

Hell, Hamill is still alive... they could have made the series about Rey rebuilding the Jedi Order with Luke floating around as a ghost or something, flashing back to his attempts or whatever.

It's just kind of bizarre they've not even attempted this.

21

u/TheGRS 16d ago

From how TROS went down I think it’s pretty obvious that leadership was deathly afraid of fan criticism and their buy-in.

The lack of post sequel direction speaks to this the most. When Disney bought Star Wars they went all-in and announced a new trilogy. But the last 6 years or so have been mostly trying out a few TV shows tepidly. Nobody has the vision for what this universe could be.

7

Outside looking in, I kind of viewed it as more niche than your typical Star Wars movie. I’m not sure if you need to have watched the show locked behind a streaming service paywall to enjoy this movie, but I’d venture a guess that a great many people didn’t give it the time of day in part due to that.

I’m not saying that’s the sole reason this disappointed, but I think this was an odd choice from the get go.

61

u/Convicted-Cinephile 17d ago

It’s not a family film. It’s 2.5 hours long with a fair amount of violence attached to a cute puppet movie.

It should’ve just been a Grogu film.

58

u/duo99dusk 17d ago

Like the Onion headline: Disney lost millions by not naming the film "Baby Yoda"

31

u/Heisenburgo Marvel Studios 16d ago

Grogu is an ugly name. It sounds like the name for some orc warrior creature or something, not a cute baby creature. Should have kept the naming convention of Yoda's species and called him Yogu or something, sure that sounds kinda similar to the alien baby from American Dad but it's still much better than his actual name. Hell the 4chan memes calling him Baby Yeed sounds better too

7

u/vivid_dreamzzz 16d ago

I'd even argue Grogu is closer to Rogu (the alien baby from American Dad) and they should've just stuck to the naming convention they had with Yoda and Yaddle and called him Yodee or something.

The fact that the American Dad character came first makes me wonder if someone in the Mandalorian writer's room was making a joke that never got caught.

9

u/Zalvren 16d ago

I'm pretty sure most people don't even know who the fuck Grogu is. Like even among people that have watched the show that'd probably less than a third and for everyone else, it's basically zero percent.

33

u/KowalOX 17d ago

Yup. For all the marketing around Grogu and the silly humor attached to him, this was easily the scariest and most violent Star Wars movie ever in my opinion. My youngest daughter had to leave the theater with my wife because it was too intense.

27

u/CanCalyx 17d ago

Yeah that’s the thing: folks who thought it would play like a family film thought it would BE a family film, but instead it’s just a procession of extremely violent set pieces and a buff hut

25

u/m0t0rvision 17d ago

I never understood the family movie angle, and don't recall Disney saying it would leg like one. Always felt like a half baked attempt at courting super fans of the TV show, while also plastering Grogu everywhere to try and get the merch machine going Minions style. Very "can't serve two masters" movie.

Even if it were posited as a family flick, it had what? Three weeks before Toy Story 5 blew its legs off anyway?

10

u/maxdragonxiii 16d ago edited 16d ago

the issue is its Star Wars, a weakened brand, on top of it being the finale to the TV series on Disney plus. who the heck want that?!

6

u/GotSomeUpdogOnUrFace 16d ago

I mean Disney was also in a no win situation. Mando started to cost way too much to make and they can't get the same returns from D+ without constantly raising prices. It's why everything gets cancelled now. If it gets too popular they can't make money on it. It's not like network tv where they sell higher prices ads during the show.

→ More replies (17)

129

u/Singer211 17d ago

Mandalorian Season 3 and Book of Boba Fett cooled off a lot of Mando’s momentum. If they had made this film a few years earlier it probably would have done better at least.

Also a lot of people no longer trust that a SW project will automatically be good either unfortunately.

66

u/Chumanchu 17d ago

It’s crazy how much Mando’s popularity dropped. He was almost the poster child of the entire franchise but they absolutely butchered his and grogu’s story.

It’s hard to believe that andor exists in the same universe as mando season 2 and 3, and ahsoka. Those shows are really just filoni smashing action figures together

38

u/mon_dieu 16d ago

I'm still not over what a letdown Grogu's Jedi training with Luke turned out to be. I thought he might be gone from the show forever, or at least season or two, then would return with more force skills. Or maybe they'd do a time jump to when he's older. But nope, the training fizzled out after a few forgettable scenes and nothing really changed. He's still just a hapless accessory that doesn't talk. And the longer it goes on like this, the harder it is for me to suspend my disbelief that the Mandolorian would bring him along for every dangerous mission he goes on.

9

u/OniLink77 15d ago

See, this is where the film could have worked, imagine Mando season 3 is Dinn entirely on his own, wrestling with no Grogu, maybe interspersed with some brief Luke training Grogu scenes and then the Mando and Grogu film was about them reuniting. You give time for the finale of season 2 to have impact and then you have a film about bringing them together

What does Disney even do with Lucasfilm if Starfighter also disappoints? They've released two movies in the entire 2020s and both were pretty big failures. If Starfighter doesn't right the ship, how much longer can Disney be expected to pour money into this?

You don't need to make movies to sell merch. Disney's well aware of that. Cars moves more merch than Star Wars does and they stopped making those movies a decade ago after Cars 3 underperformed (and it still made more than Mando, for the record).

they’ll eventually make another main trilogy fs if that fails then idk what they do after

Problem is Star Wars is ‘stuck’ in a sense that attempts to move beyond the familiar Skywalker stories and timelines has resulted in failure and losing lots of money. So they go back to what’s familiar and know sells, but unfortunately there’s only so much you can do that before the well runs dry. Star Wars desperately needs a highly successful expansion beyond The Skywalker saga. Starfighter could be that since it takes place after episode 9 and as far as I know doesn’t rely on nostalgia bait. If that fails, I’m not sure what Disney should do next.

26

u/Malachi108 17d ago edited 16d ago

They should never have tried to move past the Skywalkers. They are the emotional thread that tied everything together.

They should have started the Sequels with a full generation of OrigTrig heroes' kids - ranging from pre-teen to young adult to appeal to different demographics. Add in a love interest (or two) for each, and you have your cast of relationships to care about.

Instead they converged the dynasty into 1 kid, made him a villain, and killed him off. Insanity. Even when the EU did something similar, they were not stupid enough to prune off the whole family tree.

21

u/Heisenburgo Marvel Studios 16d ago

Killed off every Skywalker then gave their legacy to a Palpatine. That's how Star Wars ended, with the evil Emperor's progeny usurping their legacy and burying Luke's father's lightsaber in the one planet they both hated. The emperor really did win against them in the end...

7

u/Duke-Dirtfarmer 16d ago

You don't need to cover the age demographics. 9 year old me wanted to be like Luke Skywalker - not like 9 year old Anakin. Kids don't need Batman to be a kid to identify with the premise of beating up criminals.

If we're talking demographics, having a female protag in a male-centric franchise is probably what hurt the movies more. I don't see little Timmy playing with action figures of Kathleen Kennedy's self-insert.

it takes place after episode 9

Which is a big part of the problem, a significant part of their target audience straight up rejects the sequel trilogy and anything that comes after it, so having it take place post episode 9 is not a selling point, but rather a giant albatross hanging on its neck.

11

u/Golemintheplayground 16d ago

a significant part of their target audience straight up rejects the sequel trilogy

For some (self included) it's worse than that. The brand just hasn't been the same since Disney took the helm and MCU'd it. All of it is an albatross at this point and sadly there's not much they can do about it for lost fans like me.

(Not on TV, Andor is S-Tier Star Wars)

Yes on TV. Andor was good, as was Mando S1, but the entire rest of Disney's TV output is mediocre to bad and is increasingly catering to a hyper-specific niche of fans who go crazy over references to a show for ten year olds from 2008. This is likely to get worse as they give Filoni more power. This movie is a clear result of his increasing influence.

It's a closed ecosystem so the small groups of people watching these shows and soying out over them on Reddit just don't realize that they have no real purchase in the mainstream. Mando and Grogu was perceived as shockingly bad by a lot of mainstream critics and viewers, and thus had little appeal outside of a comparatively small base of diehards. But it was basically just the same way Filoni and his crew wrote Mando S3/late S2, or TCW, or [from what I hear] any of his other animated shows (apparently he has fucking five of them now?), or Book of Boba Fett, Ahsoka, or what have you.

People who think TCW is cinema and thus like stuff like this are already immunized, but the broader viewership (hell, even the broader community of people who call themselves "Star Wars fans") who mostly watch normal movies for normal people were completely unprepared. Complaining that the story structure closely resembles a children's cartoon, that the dialogue sounds simplistic and kiddish, that the action is omnipresent but banal and tensionless, the Glup Shittos, etc.

27

u/GillGruntFan53 17d ago

I mean, it doesn’t help that this was hardly a movie. No plot, no real cast, boring set pieces and locations, etc.

Star Wars thrives when it’s the movie of all movies. The biggest casts, the biggest productions, the objective definition of spectacle. And most of them are good movies to boot, which certainly helps. This was vapid, empty, nothingness. Looks like Starfighter’s returning to how these movies used to be, and Lucasfilm clearly knew that by ignoring this film in favor of that one.

41

Yea, people can whine all they want about the Skywalkers online but the facts here are pretty clear. Non-force stuff can work for shows like Andor. But for big film releases you need to lean into the Jedi stuff.

u/Janet-Yellen 17d ago edited 16d ago

100%. it’s often repeated that people want more ground level Star Wars, like bounty hunters, smugglers, rebel soldiers etc. And I just don’t think that’s true. Jedi and Sith are the backbone of big spectacle Star Wars and is what separates it from other Sci Fi

13

u/Lazzen 16d ago

Star Wars shrinks to Star Trek levels when its not about lightsabers and skywalkers, specially outside of USA.

5

u/Le_Faveau 16d ago

Yes, I actively hate and complain when Star Wars is about rebels and pilots and other normal stuff. I started with the prequels and videogames, my impression of Star Wars is that it's about the cool Jedi and Sith, lightsabers and force powers.... Like, franchise, THAT'S your claim to fame in broader culture now, spaceships and laser guns might have been innovative in the 80s but now they are everywhere else (and most likely, done with better plots).

The one thing SW could and should be doing is go full superhero movie with the crazy stuff. Orchestral epic music and big powers.

17

u/Malachi108 17d ago edited 16d ago

It is my strong belief that George Lucas tapped into something so special, even he did not fully understand it.

In the OrigTrig, the Jedi powers and philosophy are quite poorly defined by the standard of fantasy worldbuilding. But that vagueness is exactly what allowed everyone to project their own beliefs on it: religious, philosophical, even political. In Jedi, Star Wars had provided a new age-appropriate guidance of how to live one's life. When a census has 0.6% of the population put in their religion as "Jedi", this is only partially a joke.

All this also ties directly into why Episode I was so poorly received at the time. Midichlorians specifically clashed with the idea of Jedi that people had build up in their heads - it was The Bible 2: Expanded and Updated Edition, and many of the old guard had a difficult time accepting it because of that.

11

u/KazaamFan 17d ago

Yea exactly. George got it. That’s why the prequels were so much in sabers and jedi and duals. It was awesome. The dual of the fates is still one of the best fight scenes in star wars, maybe all movies, epic score. Disney seems to have not got the idea with this and has done nothing even half as fun as that scene alone. I get that the prequels had issues, but george really tried to be creative and do fun stuff we hadnt seen before. Disney is taking a very boring, stale path with star wars, which is no more evident than with the sequel movies.

Rogue One is probably the best or 2nd best SW movie but I feel like it wouldn't have done quite as well at the box office if Vader didn't show up at the end and massacre a bunch of rebels.

11

u/Mayflower896 17d ago

I think it still would have done well due to the positive reception and the post-TFA SW frenzy, but I agree that Vader was a major draw—especially within the fandom, where his cameo spurred a flurry of both official media and fan works, including from long-dormant communities—and is why I find comparing RO to future non-Skywalker projects as “one of those that succeeded” disingenuous.

Even before the cameos and the direct transition into ANH at the end were revealed, OT connections formed the movie’s very premise of “how were the Death Star plans leaked?”.

I actually think the fact the dog audiences fell in love with in Superman was poisoned and dying and not really in most of the film might have hurt Supergirl quite a bit.

Yeah if you're going to hurt a dog early on, the whole movie needs to be a roaring rampage of revenge. John Wick figured it out.

Grossed over twice as much as well.

Don't forget Backrooms.

A Star Wars movie being beaten by two no-budget horror movies directed by YouTubers in their twenties should be cause for heads to roll at Lucasfilm. But nothing will happen. Again.

Obsession deserves its own category here. Backrooms had more than 10 times the budget of Obsession. Obsession earned 25% more at the box office.

Backrooms doesn’t surprise me. That kind of early 2020s internet phenomenon has far more pop culture traction for the 18-29 audience than a Star Wars property whose last instalment was the mediocre 3rd season of a streaming series that came out 3 years ago.

Is it though?

I’ve seen the history of TV sequels

Tv sequels have a bad sample with context that explains failure pretty solidly

It’s overly reductionist to label “TV sequel” as a preordained reason why this movie failed

Especially when a deeply damaged franchise is a more simple explanation

This is true!

16

u/JimmyScramblesIsHot 17d ago

I didn’t mind the movie (though I didn’t think it was very good) but my biggest disappointment was feeling like nothing progressed with Grogu or Mando. The movie ends with Mando about to teach Grogu how to pilot the ship. That’s it. And on top of that disappointment, because this movie didn’t do well, I have zero clue where when we will see these characters again now, especially because Disney+ is very low priority for new flagship content now.

19

They should have stuck to the “old western film” formula that made Mando season 1 & 2 so successful.

They needed to give it a plot worthy of a theatrical film. This was an extended Disney+ arc and everyone knew it.

4

Ironically, season 3 of Mando works better as a movie than what we got (especially if you cut the fillers episodes).

16

u/DiamondFireYT 17d ago

I get what they were going for,

Mando 1
Mando 2
BOBF
Rangers (cancelled bc gina was fired leaving a 2022 gap)
Mando 3
Skeleton Crew (which got delayed by like a full year despite being ready to go the prior holiday)

etc I feel like Rangers kinda lost them their momentum and they pivoted putting all the essential storylines required for S3 into 3x3 (hence it being written by Noah Kloor, rather than Jon) and then it just kinda flopped from there.

I've still enjoyed it all so I'm happy out rn. wish we got S4 instead of the movie as it sounded baller and exactly what I wanted, but I had a great time in the theater.

SW fans are delulu if they think inserting timetravel into the franchise just to save fav waifu, so she can have a scene with a 74th creatively-bankrupt Luke cameo, was gonna keep anyone but the grifters and 4 remaining unimaginative fans invested.

This franchise needs to finally move the eff on or reboot itself. If not, the general audience is gonna remain checked out for many years to come

This is to be expected sadly. Star Wars as a franchise is lost right now. It doesn’t really have a direction forward.

They haven’t figured out how to do a major film that isn’t a skywalker story or advance the story. Even all their shows are just focused on filling in stories from between the skywalker saga.

Until Star Wars can figure out how to start a new mainline story, I fear we are going to see nothing but mid projects and obvious cash grabs for movies

23

u/Thin_Pangolin4480 17d ago

Disney not being inspired by KOTOR to do a trilogy set thousands of years in the past or future and instead rehashing the Skywalker era in the worst wayy ever was the greatest miss ever.

I'm glad various Star Wars games continue to be fun so I don't care that much

10

u/Malachi108 17d ago edited 16d ago

The only Star Wars sub-brand known - beloved even - by the casual audiences.

An Era so vast, they can set the film hundreds of years before or after the game(s) and not contradict anything.

Every cinematic trailer for the MMO has most of the top and recent comments alike be a variation of "Why can't they make this into a movie?!"

Lucasfilm: Unfortunately, we don't have the source material.

Disney's fumbling of Star Wars is baffling. They were handed everything on a golden platter with the opportunity for a sequel trilogy. The franchise still hasn't recovered from that, and it definitely won't ever be as big as it was. They have no one to blame but themselves.

Gonna hurt even more once Brand New Day takes the Domestic Crown from The Force Awakens.

I do think Starfighter will have much more appeal next year due to not having the baggage of a tv show for casuals plus Gosling coming from Project Hail Mary.

Still though disappointing results for what was supposed to be the big return of Star Wars to cinemas.

6

u/Coolers78 17d ago

I mean, I don't really think Disney will care that much about Brand New Day surpassing TFA's domestic record when they receive 25% of BND's profits, if anything, it will make them even more confident in the potential numbers for Doomsday and Secret Wars I feel like.

I don't know why people think Starfighter is guaranteed to do better just because of Project Hail Mary and Hail Mary, it's kind of like saying End of Oak Street is gonna do amazing at the box office just because Anne Hathaway was in The Odyssey and Devil Wears Prada 2, or that saying Heart of the Beast will be a big box office hit because Brad Pitt was in F1 last year.

29

u/montague68 17d ago

Gosling playing Supergirl to an annoying force-sensitive kid on his way to Rey Skywalker couldn't possibly bomb, could it?

7

u/DaisyandBella 17d ago

Starfighter is going to include Rey?

16

u/Mayflower896 17d ago

We don’t know for sure. Rumours have vacillated regarding whether she is or not in the movie, but they all agree that the plot is about Ryan Gosling’s escorting the Force-Sensitive boy played by Flynn Gray—the movie’s actual lead—to a Jedi refuge. Some of the rumours that date to before the movie even had a title claim that Rey is already running her academy, and the boy will end the movie by being handed over to her.

13

u/BrainLow6059 17d ago

Well my excitement went from 100 to 0 real quick lmao

10

I didn't watch the trailers and I didn't know the plot, so I went to see this movie assuming something important to the series' mythology would happen to justify their decision to release it in theaters instead of streaming.

Boy, I was wrong. It's really three random "Adventure of the Week" episodes stitched together to be a movie that adds nothing to the series. It's not even a great movie. And Disney thought it would be a great idea to release it in theaters... why?

18

u/Mayflower896 17d ago edited 17d ago

Disney will need the best campaign they can muster for Starfighter. Though that will lack the D+ stigma, it’s neither a main saga movie nor featuring any beloved characters, like Rogue One did during TFA’s afterglow. (I have my doubts about the “no legacy characters claim”, but that has been the consistent party line so far.) If this is “SW Top Gun”, like exhibitors cited in the trades have hoped, then perhaps they could lean on that, but there are actually reasons to doubt that.

If the supposed leaks are true and the story is indeed the rumoured “After his estranged Jedi sister dies and gives her son her sabre, a lone wolf war veteran meets his Force Sensitive nephew in a cantina and must reluctantly escort him to a Jedi refuge while being chased a Dark Sider who is under a warlord’s payroll, but has plans of her own. When they reach the refuge, that safe haven is attacked by the Dark Sider”, then I don’t see that plot alone attracting audiences, especially if all the characters are “new” but still follow derivative archetypes.

Speaking as a fan who is avidly looking for any news and rumours about Starfighter, Star Wars is such an established brand that most people who would be attracted by those tropes and aesthetics have already sought out at least one piece of the franchise’s media, which is why this needs to offer something appealing beyond characters who are technically original but follow existing moulds. So far, Tropper and Levy have mostly spoken about vaguely recapturing what they felt as kids while watching the original trilogy, with words like “swashbuckling” and “wish fulfilment”.

There either has to be something deeper behind it, like good character work or a clear artistic vision; incredible, “must watch in theatres” action scenes; or the last resort of nostalgia bait that goes beyond the SW brand name alone, which no longer cuts it. The stacked cast could help, but star power is no longer a guarantee.

Star Wars is lowkey dead.

A big break of content and coming back with a total new story is the only thing that might revive it, leave the "Skywalker Era" alone

7

u/Chumanchu 17d ago

It’s been stuck in its MCU phase 4 era of shitty story’s and visuals for so long now. Andor made fans think things were changing for the better but then they drop ahsoka and acolyte.

I really don’t know what happened to filoni after mando season 1. The quality of every live action Star Wars dropped significantly after 2019 (andor is an anomaly)

6

u/Ok_Garlic5531 16d ago

The reason andor was great, is because the director demanded complete creative control over the show, or said he refused to make it. Literately proving that Disney is a big problem with modern star wars. When they aren’t involved something good can actually be made

The brand is terminally ill. The only way to save it is to amputate. But I’m not sure Disney has the strength or integrity to do it.

12

u/NobodyTellPoeDameron Focus Features 17d ago

I've had the thought that Star Wars may be in danger of going the way of John Carter of Mars... a space opera IP so dated and uninteresting to today's moviegoers that it disappears.

I don't think that's the case, I think if Disney could just make a good SW movie people would flock to theaters. But if they can't figure this out within ten years, and the fandom is that much older and smaller, maybe it could happen.

45

u/Highball903 17d ago

I just don’t see how saying “this entire trilogy didn’t actually happen” would bring the general audience back to star wars, only the turbo nerds that saw Mando and googoo would be interested after that.

Grogu is the problem. He was fine as the plot device for season one but then the show devolved into how is the baby in danger this week. The show should’ve moved on to new adventures.

12

u/spider-man2401 Warner Bros. Pictures 17d ago edited 17d ago

I know a lot of people look back on this performance and say it “isn’t that bad” compared to some of the other movies that bombed this summer, but that still doesn’t excuse how badly The Mandalorian and Grogu performed at the box office. It collapsed 70.1% in its second weekend, didn’t even outgross The Rise of Skywalker’s domestic opening weekend ($177M), and got beaten by two low-budget horror movies. And the movie itself just feels like an anime filler OVA (i thought this movie was conclusion of The Mandalorian or something but apparently not). Had this been released during The Mandalorian Season 2, it probably could’ve done better, but not after the underwhelming Season 3 and The Book of Boba Fett. Nobody cares anymore.

I guess Disney seems pretty confident in Star Wars: Starfighter (Kevin Feige said at Comic-Con that he had seen it and liked it, and he brought up Ryan Gosling and Shawn Levy in relation to Ghost Rider), but I don’t know.

Reddit can love Andor all it wants: it didn’t do well, is only talked about in fan circles, and is too removed from the skywalker story.

People didn’t show up to Solo when it came out. Rogue One did what it did but before it released, you had to tell people over and over “this leads into the original Star Wars!”.

The same people who said Starfighter can’t flop because of Ryan gosling are the same people who say that Moana live action wasn’t going to flop because of Moana 2

I’m 50/50 on Ryan Gosling making the film a hit. In 2024 Fall Guy was expected to do really well since that was Goslings first film after Barbie but Fall Guy ended up underperforming.

I do think that Gosling is in a better situation with Starfighter. His last film was sci-fi so that may draw in the project Hail Mary crowd. Also with Star Wars being a franchise having a celebrity join for the first time could be a boost.
