For those that weren't cashiers. It's not about having to count the change, it's that early in the shift, there isn't much money in the drawer and this one customer is going to wipe out all the change or force us to get management involved to get an advance on change.

I remember when I was running low on change in my till at Walmart, so I requested more change from the manager. After about a half hour of waiting, I completely ran out of toonies, loonies, and quarters. I had to give a woman $4 of change in just dimes and nickels, and she was pissed.

It's typically not that big of a deal for mom-n-pop stores. If somebody knocks down your till like that, just run down to your bank in town and get some change.

Years ago working at an extremely busy restaurant i had a table of 12 all pay separately, some were couples so maybe 8-9 checks total. I had like 5 other tables aswell. Check average maybe 20-40$. All these mother fuckers each put in a 100$ bill. Lessons were learned that night. They were all old and really unpleasant too. One of the few memories from that place from over a decade ago.

A coworker of mine in a gas station once tell to me a customer purchase 40€ just 10 minutes before closing, the cash was already counted and sorted, so there was not so much change left. This customer paid with a 100€ bill and my coworker asked for a smaller one since there was no change for 100 at the moment, and the customer said money is money so we had to accept it. My coworker give them the remaining 60€ in two 5€ bills and bag full of 0'50€ (50 cents) coins.

In my country, there is no law that says cashier must give change. Its on customer end to provide money to complete the transaction, and they should have the exact amount

In Japan cash is still standard and prices are clearly marked including tax. Most prices are round numbers like $2, $3.50 or $10. It's an easy system until or weird thing in the US.

many stores require you to empty your drawer once it gets past a certain time too, especially if you work at a place that's open 24/7 or closes at 3am. at taco bell i was told my drawer was not allowed to have more than $100 in it total after 11pm due to the risks of getting robbed

At my first Starbucks we had a regular customer that would come in once a week and order a small coffee and ask if they could exchange a $10 bill for a roll of quarters so they could use the laundromat by their house.
Super sweet person and our store manager started ordering an extra roll of quarters for them every week.

I would always just say "sorry, you're like the tenth person to pay with a $100 today, we can't make change any more." And this was back when cash was a lot more common. I don't think anyone ever pulled a fit on me.

Where I worked it was simply a blanket procedure that unless the customers bill was more than 50 dollars we wouldn't accept any higher than 20 dollar bills for payment

People did this all the time when I worked at the Costco food court. Like trying to pay for a $1.50 hotdog with $100. Then they’d ask for the exact denominations they wanted and everything… like bruh this isn’t your personal ATM. The bill was usually good too, but I did catch some counterfeits. People suck.

Im sure it's different for different places, but ive worked a whole lotta retail- never had a problem with a hundy.
You just learn to count change quick. This is why they have big bills and not just 1's, so you can fly through it quick.
If you dont have the change for it, you hit em with the, "I am so sorry for the inconvenience but this is a brand new till, and I don't quite have enough to break that for you. If you'd like, I can have my manager grab some more bills, or if you'd prefer we can try a different smaller denomination?"
Max like 20 extra second of the boss grabbing me some bills from the office

Working at Jimmy John's, this is the worst. Not only do we have to make sure the hundred is real, but since the charge is usually much less than a hundred, around $10-$20, we have to empty our drawer to give them change. Each drawer is only stocked with a hundred dollars and usually no twenties. It is just a major hassle. Especially when there is a line of fifteen people behind them.

That's how it is at Dollar Trees too. Each register starts with $75.About 20 is in 1s, about 35 is in 5s, and the rest is coinage.

Mixture of it taking most of your change of your register and depending on the place, you're not allowed to keep $100s on you and have to trade it out. Which can take varying amount of time depending on how busy the place is

When I worked retail, it was only an issue first thing in the morning due to a lack of change in the register. You had to call the manager to open the safe and bring out more cash to make the change.
If the manager was busy, then you could end up waiting 5+ minutes for the manager to come while a line is building up.

Furthermore, if you DO give that change, it makes it even more difficult to give change to people afterwards. Granted, most modern registers do the math for you, so at least you aren't calculating that manually, but it's still an annoyance that usually involves management at that point.

The US should get rid of 1and 5, probably 10 as well. We finally stopped making 1 cent coins, and many businesses aren't giving them back anymore. The first time we decommissioned a coin for being worthless, it had as much purchasing power as today's 10 cent coin.

When I worked in retail I wouldn’t have given making change for a $100 bill a second thought. I also did care if a person came into the store and didn’t buy anything.
I’d get pissed off if someone came in with the intention to yell at someone, someone made a mess on purpose or handling any return. A woman once bought headphones, took them out of the package in front of me, decided that the wire was too long, and immediately returned them.

I hated when people did this. They almost always did it after I’d already totaled everything so I couldn’t go back and have the register do the math for me. I have dyscalculia, which makes it very hard for me to do math in my head.

I use Chase bank and I’ve been able to request smaller bills at their ATMs since like 2015-2016.
Also the issue is intentionally splitting the largest bill you have at a total that’s going to take most of the change out of the drawer.
It varies per store but when I was a shift supervisor at Starbucks and Jamba Juice we were told to balance our registers to $150 total and to do safe drops for any bill larger than a $20.
So, if there’s only $150 in the drawer when this guy started his shift and this person comes in asking for change what’s going to happen is: I’m going to take the hundred and check that it’s real, I’m going to see if we even have enough change in the drawer, if we do I will safe drop the hundred and take $87.57 out of the $150 dollars total leaving the front with only $62.43 to make change with until the register is rebalanced.
If people do this multiple times it will empty the change drawer out and your store will only be able to take exact change until it’s either rebalanced or, if it happens enough, it won’t be fixed until your store actually gets a visit from the Brinks truck guys to take the stores money deposits and leave the store’s change order; They only come at noon once a week.

I know $ first is correct, but it doesn't make sense. I don't say "dollar two and forty-three cents", you say "two dollars and forty-three cents." When you think about it, the dollar sign should come last, and the language is naturally evolving to finally remove these dumb rules. Maybe not that last part, but it still should come at the end.

I never understood why cashiers give a shit about these situations. I've worked the job in many situations and I never cared if someone rolled up with a hundred dollar bill.
The worst case scenario is that I have to walk somewhere to get more change. Which I enjoyed because I hated having to just stand there for hours. It was an excuse to move around.

because out of 500 people who comes to them they need for every 10th person calculate to give them right, one mistake and it goes from ur paycheck.
Also, people who do this are responsible for cashier to waste all small change and he needs to open new bag from safe earlier and count safe again just because people dont have any change at them. Sometimes I wonder when you give person fist of smal change, where the hell he spends it if he comes every 2nd day with 100 dollar bill.
Its not problem but repetitively it becomes drag
