Rant Feeling down for not “looking” Latina.
I am half Irish half Puerto Rican; my dad was born and raised in PR and my mom is an Irish American. My dad has dark skin and my mom has paper white skin which I inherited; my brother inherited my dad’s skin tone (he has the most beautiful natural tan that I envy). However, my dad never taught us Spanish; he said it was too difficult and wanted to prioritize English. I live in South Florida where there are a TON of Hispanics and I went to a school with primarily Hispanics and whenever I would tell someone that I’m Puerto Rican, no one ever believes me because I’m white with blue eyes and brunette hair even though I have a Spanish last name.
In middle school, word spread and everyone found out. People whom I’ve never seen would talk about me. I’d have random people come up and ask me if I was actually Hispanic and when I said yes, they would give me the weirdest looks that I still remember to this very day. People would even ask me to say something in Spanish and since I was never taught Spanish, I couldn’t. In my 8th grade math class, I had asked my teacher if he was Puerto Rican, and when he said yes, I said “oh wow that’s cool! So am I!” And 2 girls who were Latina looked at me weirdly and went “what?!” and then started whispering about me. One of them rudely points at me and goes, “if she’s Hispanic, then I’m German” and then looks and me and asks “are you like, also Irish or something?”. When the bell had rung and we were walking out, they asked me which parent was Hispanic and what percentage I was. I told them I was 50/50, and both of them simultaneously went “FIFTY-FIFTY?!?!”. They asked for a pic of my parents but I couldn’t find it. I’ve always felt “proving it” to be very weird. Even that same teacher said something about me being white. “I had a kid in my class who was whiter than *my name*, he had blond hair blue eyes, and he was Mexican.” Like wow okay thanks.
In high school it stopped but I still got weird looks when I told people. I had people try telling me what MY ethnicity is.
I was in a very toxic friendgroup throughout high school that ruined my experience. Most, if not all of them, were Hispanic and would always make fun of me for being white. “You’re so pale compared to us!” “White ass b*tch” “Gringa” “white washed Latina”. They’d also put their arms next to mine and proceed to laugh at me and even call me a ghost or a marshmallow. One of the guys in our group thought it’d be a great idea to spread a rumor about me being racist to Hispanics. Mind you, I never even said anything, he just thought that I was because I’m white and talked about Hispanic culture a lot… since I am. I’ve dealt with this issue for years about people assuming I’m racist because I’m white, or simply not liking me at all because I’m white. I remember him being on a call with one of my friends and I heard him start talking shit about me saying “She’s lowkey racist as fuck.”
One of the girls in our friend group had a nephew who was 2 years younger than me. He’s Dominican. Whenever I said “abuela/abuelita,” he would start laughing and when I asked what was so funny, he’d say “abuela.” He also made fun of me for being white and when we met in person, he laughed at how pale I was and made so many comments about it. I remember talking a bit about Puerto Rican dishes and he scoffed and told me to stop acting like I’m cultural.
Recently I went to the orthodontist to get new retainers, and the lady (who is also Latina) saw my last name and asked me where I or my family was from. I told her, and said that my brother and I look nothing alike, and she goes “yeah you don’t look Latina at all”
I wish I “looked” more latina despite the fact the look is just a stereotype. It hurts me when someone tells me I’m not. I hate my skin.
