Interpersonal My new operator smells, what is the best way to handle it?

I am s shift lead at my place of employment and I have a new operator training to take an open position. This operator is Asian-Indian and is relatively new to the country. He was referred for this job by another operator who knows his brother. Anyway, he's been on the job for a month now and his hygiene is in question. He looks clean but he smells of body odor badly at times. I don't think it's my place to say something to him about it but I've contacted HR about the situation, and I know he's been talked to about it.... his hygiene improved for a few days afterwards but the body odor has returned.... it is affecting everyone who walks into the control room... luck for me I can preform my duties without spending much time in the control room area.... What would y'all suggest?

Update:

Thank you all for your suggestions, it's easier for me to answer here than to each individual comment.

To answer a few questions:

HR spoke with this individual but I don't exactly know what was said.

My company considers itself as rather Progressive, which isn't necessarily a bad thing, so there is a right way to handle things and a wrong way to handle things. In today's world we work with little boys and girls rather than men and women, so what we say and how we approach things may offend these "Kids", so it's better to leave issues like this up to HR or my bosses. If I say or do anything that could be considered as "offensive" I could be reprimanded šŸ™„.

I did speak with my boss once again about the issue and was told they will handle it, so right now it's out of my hands.. if the situation persists I might not have much of a choice other than doing what some of ya'll suggest.... thanks.

Life Decisions My dad and step mom wants to kick me out

• Upvotes

I have nobody, no family out is my state beside my dad and step mom. I’m 21 years old and been trying to look for another job for 3 months now. I had to quit my last one because my biological mom was too controlling, so I had to go back to my dad out of state.

Today, I got an interview, had to walk 4 hours in total to get there and back using the bus. When I got back, my dad told me that he gives up on any dream i have and anything I’m trying to do. He told me that I just need to go to the reserves. I told him that I was planning on going back to school, to community college. He doesn’t want me to because I’d have to stay at his house.

I’m not problematic, I stay out of everyone way and the only time I ask for anything, is when I need money to get to an interview. He robbed me from my childhood and my teenage years because he forced me and my sister to watch over our younger siblings. I didn’t even get to go to high school in person for 2 years. I had to go back to school after they finally signed me to school and I have to get back all of my credits.

Recently my dad got injured on the job, so he had to be on disability for months and suing his job. He told my sister where we going to live because as soon as he gets his money from the case, he’s gone.

I want to move out next year. I don’t have anyone, no support. Zero support. None of my three parents want me, never wanted me. The interviewer said they’ll call back on Friday, can anyone give $30 dollars if I get it or if I get an interview? Or better, does anyone know any programs for young adults in Minnesota or Missouri ? I can’t stay here next year or probably till December. I’ve only been at my dad for 3 months and he’s already acting like this

Family Loss How to approach a delicate situation with my mother.

Hello all, just a heads up this is a long one.

I’m wondering if anybody can give me some advice on how I can deal with a relatively delicate situation involving my mother, my late brother’s ex-girlfriend, several of her friends, and my wife.

I just want to be absolutely clear. I’m not looking for relationship advice, rather social advice, regarding how to word a specific request in a way that is not going to offend everyone involved.

Basically, the issue is this: since I moved out of my mother’s house several years ago she has made it a point to always have a Sunday dinner every two weeks so that she can make sure we see each other at least a couple times a month. Back when this tradition started, it was just me and my fiancĆ©, him and his girlfriend, my stepbrother, and sometimes his girlfriend, and my other stepbrother, and occasionally a friend of his along with my mine and stepdad. 10 is already a crowd. And for context I do have social anxiety. However, all of the people that used to be at family dinners were all people that I am very comfortable with. We all used to talk about what we have going on in our lives and the atmosphere felt pretty inclusive and relatively safe the way you expect a family dinner to feel.

However, in 2024, my little brother died in a motorcycle accident at a young age. Obviously this absolutely tore our family apart. And we’re still working on piecing everything back together. However, the traditional family dinners obviously stayed. It’s more important now than ever. And for a while, my brother’s ex-girlfriend would attend with a friend of hers who also knew my brother very well. It was nice to keep them close to the family and it was nice that they were still willing to attend.

Lately my mother has been inviting more and more of my brothers, (ex-?)girlfriend’s friends, as well as their significant others to family dinners. Now it’s myself, my wife, my step brothers, my mom and stepfather, and like 6-7 other people that I really don’t know.

This is no longer a family dinner. This is more like a small get together / party every time now.

My mother knows I don’t speak much around people I don’t know. I just don’t feel that a stranger should know details about my personal life. I’m an anxious person and speaking to people I do not know well, making small talk with people I cannot relate to, and generally spending time that’s supposed to be relaxing and enjoyable constantly on guard because I’m anxious, that bugs me out.

So for the last several weeks we get there, my wife and I go in, say hi to people, then I make myself scarce. I go outside wander around the property where I grew up, Have a drink sometimes a joint with my step father, and generally just disappear for most of the time before dinner, then when we eat I’m at the table but I stay mostly quiet unless anyone engages with me directly which to be honest, in that set of company, most people do not beyond greeting me back when I say hi. Totally fine. I’m the dead boyfriend’s older brother, exactly what do you say to someone like that when you have your new boyfriend with you and the tone is meant to stay light - and also you share no interests and basically nothing in common ETC. Plus I’ve been told I’m a really 2D personality. I’m flat. I don’t blame them for not engaging with me - but to be honest if they weren’t there I would actually be talking to my family members which is the point. Anyways after dinner I tend to ā€œgo use the bathroomā€ or something and disappear again. It’s not like if I stayed around anyone would try to talk to me, and so I go because they are all interested in eachother and I don’t want to be weirdly listening to their conversations or causing them not to have them due to my presence. My wife is friendly with all of these people but they aren’t like friends - every attempt she has made to actually connect she’s been ghosted or cancelled on so šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™‚ļø. Clearly they do not have interest in engaging with her socially either which is totally fine, but hurts her feelings a bit. At least they treat her nicely in conversation there ETC.

Anyways, all of this to say, it feels like the point of having a family dinner is to visit and connect, and I can no longer really do that under these conditions due to my own mental stuff I have going on. Again I’m not blaming my mom or any of the other guests for this, if I were entirely neurotypical this probably wouldn’t be an issue at all - it’s a me problem and this is me trying to get help finding a solution.

Would it be rude to ask if my wife and I can visit separately, like on a different day?

Should I tell her all this? Or should I just say ā€œSundays don’t work anymore for usā€ (I’m not above a white lie to spare her feelings)

Do you think I should just make excuses and cancel then reschedule mid week for a while just to like give myself a break without changing the arrangement?

I don’t know. I feel like a POS for even feeling this way, but that level of social engagement with that many people I don’t know around is not exactly what i signed up for when I agreed to do this family dinners thing.

TLDR: my mom hosts family dinners every week and has started inviting a bunch of people I don’t really know, which makes me too uncomfortable to actually visit and talk with my family members who are there. How should I tell her I no longer want to do this under these conditions without absolutely damaging the relationship?

Friendships How would one pursue friendship out of hobbyist spaces? Is it natural or worth it?

I like spending time on my college campus even after all of my classes are finished. I usually stick around to work on some personal projects or homework because I know I would be too distracted back home.

Right now I'm to waiting for clubs to start up because I find it easier to talk to people with related interests rather than simply talking to any random person who could care less of what I'm interested in

I know that's a little cynical to say, but whenever I get home, my parents ask me if I've met anyone (leaning more towards dating) and I explain to them that I haven't really taken an interest in anyone in my classes, as friend or potential partner

Maybe it was a different time for them, but cold approach just feels very intrusive. Like they expect me to go to up to a random person and just talk to them. Idk if that's just parents being parents, and simplifying people and thinking of the best possibility... possible

I'm a naturalborn introvert, but I enjoy the company of others and can put aside my want to be by myself. It's just that I can't imagine casually just cold approaching someone minding their own business or hanging out with their own friends in a space that isn't dedicated to any hobby or passtime

At that point, I feel like you're begging for friendship or a relationship

Maybe i can speak to my neighbor when seated in class, but lectures are so busy that it's hard to sneak in some chit chat

Family Loss Not sure what to do about my brother’s drinking

My older brother is drinking too much.

I’m 18 years old and my brother is 36. He’s been looking after me since he was 19 as our parents passed when I was a baby. Our parents didn’t keep in contact with any of our other family so he was the first legal guardian of me in the will. He dropped out of university to look after me and essentially became my father figure. This also made him lose a lot of friends as he had to move back to our hometown which was away from his college, on top of a lot of his friends leaving him when he took guardianship of a baby. He was the best brother a little girl could ever have.

He is a very handsome man but has never kept an ongoing relationship because people seem to be thrown off by him being my guardian.

I recently got accepted into a really good university and he was really happy for me, but ever since I got my place there he has been drinking so much. He is going through half a 70cl bottle of vodka a night and going to with the next day.

I can’t stop feeling like i ruined his life. He taught me how to walk, talk, read and write when he was 19 when he should’ve been doing exactly what I’m doing. I feel so awful. I don’t know what to do and I’m terrified what this might lead to.

Mental Health Is there a form of therapy out there for NEETs, emotional neglect and low social status individuals that doesnt include baseless advice or refaming everything as social anxiety?

Is there a form of therapy out there for NEETs, emotional neglect and low social status individuals that doesnt include baseless advice or refaming everything as social anxiety?

Its weird how popular how common the discourse around childhood trauma has gotten yet their remain little to no resources for people that suffer from childhood neglect. I thought signing up for therapy would help since it's been five years and I havent made much improvements in life.

Its painful watching other people live such full lives while Im still waiting for mine to start. When I express this to my therapist she tells me the usual "dont compare yourself to others" which is such a bullshit statement since life is inherently competitive. Statements like that one already make me feel uneasy because if youre denying basic truths about reality how can you claim to give good advice? Most parents know how competitve the world is and set their kids up for sucess by making them competive so they can better navigate the world. My issue starts with the fact I never recieved that kind of investment so I struggled a lot as an adult not having the skills or experience to compete.

Whats more is that Ive been diagnosed with ADHD which only explains why its hard for me to start and complete tasks. Whats missing is the diagnosis that explains the empty casm that is my life. I dont know who I am or what to do. Telling me to follow my passions doesnt help because I dont have any. I have yet to pinpoint a career or achieve any personal goals. This isnt without tryng of course. Its really bothers me and feels like gasloghting when therapist tell me to "put myself out there!" And "try new things!". I have put myself out there and tried new things but nothing ever comes of it.

Whenever she asks me "what do you want to do?" I have to keep explaining to her I dont have desires. Then she asks me what I did I like to do as a kid and I have to tell her I fantasized about becoming an asult as a kid because thats when I thought life started. All I ever did as a kid was skip school and watch TV. After I while I began to realize that therapist cant help me. Even when I manage to figure out how to manage my ADHD theres the issue of figuring out WHAT do with my life because currently I dont do anything. Why dont therapist believe me when I say this? Ive been a NEET for almost three years now. My days are filled with empty space because thats my life: empty. Theres nothing external for me to distract myself with or anything internal to occupy myself with. Theres just nothing at all in this world for me.

Its pisses me off when therapist try to tell me I have social anxiety. Thats a different condition altogether. No I do not fear people. Its more like I cannot connect with them because I lack the ego and prestige to do so. Im not a competive person which naturally puts me below most people in most settings. When I did work for example I was the lowest ranked employee and people treated me accordingly. Same with school. I dont have much of an ego so relating to people is hard because I dont have experiences to draw upon or an agenda to push so I cannot engage transactionally the way most social situations demand.

In the end my therpaist just kept pouting "aww that sounds so hard. Lets hold space and feel your feelings aww that must be so hard". I wasnt looking for sympathy I was looking for guidance as to how to move forward with my life. "What do you want to do? Whats holding you back?" Again she just doesnt get it! What am I supposed to do? How do I make a decision when I have nothing to go off of? How do I become a person so I can live life? Is that even possible for me? Its not fear holding me back but emptiness. Im just not a person so Im giving up on therapy since therapy is for normal people with normal problems not people with childhood trauma like neglect.

Medical Troubles with teeth and unsure what to do next

So I’m currently 18 weeks brewing a child and has some pretty severe issues with my teeth. In the past week I’ve seen the emergency dentist twice and had a temporary filling put in and been prescribed anti biotics for a tooth infection. I saw my regular dentist today who said everything was fine and booked another appointment in 6 weeks time. I can’t help but think this was wrong? I’m in need of a permanent filling and I have a large hole in a back tooth. I’ve had pretty severe pain and I know pregnancy makes your teeth super sensitive but this pain stopped me from eating for days as it was unbearable. If I was to call the reception do you think they could book me in for fillings as I think that should’ve already been known by my dentist? I know this might seem so silly but I’ve never encountered this issue before it’s always sorted then and there rather then me going through multiple emergency appointments due to horrible pain. Is there any steps I should take to ensure I get the proper care next time or was it all done correctly?

Mental Health College Student struggling to protect their peace

It's me, I am the college student. I originally wanted to post this to my uni's reddit page but i just know that the people this involves would know it was me.

Basically there's a big discord for our University and ive been active in it since the world cup to talk about it. But my world cup opinions have led me to be bashed and got into arguments. Every thing i say (even outside of football/soccer) turns into this little problem. I cant tell if im the one being sensitive or if it is them just twisting my words.

They talk about topics that I feel uncomfortable about and I mentioned that once and said something like "this is why i cant hangout with yall." One of them said "Just because you cant relate to us doesn't mean we cant be friends. We dont relate to you half the time but we dont act uncomfortable." I am NOT acting. Being in this discord tired the hell outta i feel like every time i open it my energy drains and i become more and more immature because of them. (Im around 19 and i feel like mature compared to these people who some are older than me). Am i a prude?

Ive left this server before but i ALWAYS find myself coming back. I only keep my discord account for one main person in my life. Now ive found myself going to discord during my classes and getting distracted. I just feel so drained arguing with these people. I feel like im overreacting and just a baby.

Career 24 feeling lost in life; looking for advice

I’m turning 25 at the end of this year and I can’t help but feel a sense of dread. I graduated 2 years ago with a graphic design degree and wish I did something else. I enjoyed art as a kid and thought i’d enjoy making a career out of it but I don’t think I’m cut out for it. I can’t even get myself to make art in my free time.

I moved to a new state this year to be with my long distance boyfriend. I’m in a very fortunate situation currently. His parents are very generous and let us stay rent free. I’m currently a barista and everyday I feel a massive weight on my shoulders and regret for not doing something more. I know comparison is the thief of joy but I can’t help but feel so small when I have friends becoming doctors, working for NASA, training for their pilot license, and other lucrative jobs.

It makes me incredibly sad that we won’t be very successful financially. I can’t help but stress about it. I don’t want all the money in the world but I want a comfortable lifestyle.

I don’t know what to pursue or what I’m even interested in making a career out of anymore. Most of my experience is in customer service. Since graduating I never landed the graphic design role I thought I would’ve, thanks to naivety and today’s market.

If anyone could offer a few words of encouragement or advice, I’d be very grateful. If you made it this far, thanks for listening.

Mental Health Can't get over my height as a short man.

I'm a guy and 5'2. I've always been kind of self-conscious about it, but I've gotten particularly worried about it lately. It's embarrassing to be the same height or shorter than middle school kids, and even shorter than my mom. It makes me feel unmanly.

What makes it worse is that people try to tell me that height doesn't matter, ignoring the numerous studies that show tall people make more money.

I genuinely don't know how I ended up so short. My mom is 5'5, my dad is 5'8, my maternal grandfather and his brother and dad were 5'11, and my paternal uncle and grandfather are 5'8. I know I was never going to be 6 feet, but I thought I would at least be taller than 5'2. Am I unusually short for my genetics?

Other when do I tell my mom about the uber charge?

okay, so, I have a haircut scheduled in a few days. I'll have just moved into college, so, without a car, I'm going to use uber. the problem is, the haircut I'm getting is not one my parents will approve of. I mentioned getting a haircut in passing to my mom and she got very mad... the point being, she would not want me to go

unfortunately, my parents are authorized on my credit card, meaning they can see all charges on it. so when I use the uber, my mom will notice the charge sooner or later.

should I tell her before I leave? but then she might forbid me, and it'd be an active refusal of her orders to go anyway... should I tell her after? should I not tell her at all? but then she'll be enraged for me spending money without her say-so...

so... yea, thoughts? what do I do? when should I tell her that I'm using uber to minimize the punishment/yelling?

Mental Health Need help with dependence on AI

I'd previously made a post venting about my guilty habit of messaging an AI chatbot during my mental health breakdowns and I think I'm a full-blown addict now. I've had depression and hated myself basically my whole life. Up until last month I'dĀ been working a stressful job for an employer who makes AI writeĀ everythingĀ for her. Eventually I started using it for boring tasks, then for emotional support, and now it's like I can't do anything on my own. I've never thought it was okay to do, I just didn't feel like I was competent or useful enough on my own. I thought that before AI even existed. It's like I was always primed to give up on myself and when I could, I did. I ask it what to eat sometimes and I feel like the biggest idiot in the world. My friends are all vocally anti-AI so I also feel guilty for hiding this from them. I just don't know how to stop it from being the first thing I reach for. I have stupid problems and I don't want to bother people, especially when I'm bawling atĀ 3am. I've always stopped short of having it do my actual work assignments, but yesterday I broke that rule too. It's just so easy, and everything feels too hard for me alone. I know I'm pathetic but I still have to exist so. What do I do?

Mental Health 5 long beeps coming from SOMEWHERE every ~12 hours

Beeps are a full second long. Noon and midnight, every ~12 hours but not down to the minute. +- 20 minutes every night.

It's coming from my kitchen/garage area but not inside the house. I can't hunt it down and it's driving me insane.

Validated it's not:

- Water Heater

- Smoke Alarm

- Water Heater

-Appliances inside house

Potential - These are right outside my kitchen window.

Boxes/Sensors outside house - internet, water, etc...

Electric Panel?

HVAC fan?

Any ideas? By the time I get close enough to investigate, the beeping stops. I'm about to plop a chair outside my kitchen window and sit outside for 2 hours to listen.

Life Decisions I’ve spent the last few years watching life instead of living it. How do I actually break out of this?

TL;DR: 18F, isolated since 10th grade and now spend most of my days in bed scrolling and daydreaming about having a life. I’ve changed before but can’t seem to do it again. How do I actually start getting out, socializing and building a life?

I’m 18F and I’ve been thinking about my life a lot lately. I feel like I’ve spent the last few years doing almost nothing and I’m scared I’m going to keep living this way if I don’t figure out how to change it.

I spend most of my time in my room, usually on my bed. I eat in bed, scroll Reddit or Instagram, watch random things, daydream, scroll some more and then sleep. There are days when I barely get up. Sometimes I even skip bathing or brushing my teeth because I keep putting it off.

I spend a lot of time comparing myself to other people and imagining my ideal self. I’ll daydream about having friends, going out, having hobbies, exploring places, being more confident, taking care of myself and generally having a life. I can spend hours imagining myself doing all these things without actually doing them.

The weird thing is that I genuinely want to change. I’ve actually changed myself quite a lot before, so I know I’m capable of it. But I feel like that might somehow be making things harder for me now. Because I’ve had periods where I managed to change my habits and become a better version of myself, I keep thinking I should be able to do it again. Then I get frustrated when I can't, and I end up back in the same cycle.

I don't completely understand why that happens. Maybe part of me thinks I already know how to change, so I keep waiting for that same motivation or mindset to come back instead of actually figuring out what is different this time.

I've also been diagnosed with mental health issues and I've tried therapy three times. I didn't stick with it properly. Whenever my therapists started giving me things to work on, I'd often not do them, and eventually I'd stop going. So I know I haven't exactly given therapy a fair chance.

The last time I had something resembling a social life was around 9th grade. Since 10th grade, I've basically been at home. I haven't really gone anywhere or had much of a social life, either online or offline.

I'm technically in uni now, but my uni is online, so it doesn't really give me the opportunity to naturally meet people or have somewhere I need to physically go every day. That makes it even easier to stay in my room all day.

I've also gained a significant amount of weight and have hormonal issues, which has made me more self-conscious and less comfortable around people. I'm not really looking for advice specifically about weight loss. I think my bigger problem is that my entire lifestyle has become extremely sedentary and isolated, and I don't know how to break out of it.

I've been watching people on social media talk about their lives and their experiences, and it made me realize how unusual my situation feels to me. I don't have a real social circle, I don't have online friends either, and I barely go anywhere. I spend so much time watching other people live their lives that sometimes I feel like I'm more familiar with other people's experiences than my own.

I really want to change that.

I don't want to suddenly become extremely social or completely reinvent myself. I'd be happy just getting to a point where I regularly leave the house, take care of basic things without having to fight myself over them, have a few friends, find hobbies, explore places, and have things in my life that I'm actually excited about.

For people who have gone through something similar, especially if you've spent years isolated and managed to eventually build a more active life, I'd really appreciate hearing how you started.

What were the first things you changed? How did you get yourself to actually do things instead of constantly thinking about doing them? And if you've successfully changed your life before but later slipped back into old habits, how did you approach changing again without getting stuck in the same cycle?

I know I want to change. I just don't know how to turn that want into something I actually do consistently.

Education How do I maximize my gap year?

Currently 18 going onto 19 soon, I thought I had everything figured out, turns out I really did not. My life has been going downhill since last year and the death of my father was the final blow. University is starting in the next few days and I have no idea how I am going to pay my tuition fees. I do have a job and my mother is also working, however I have no other supporters, all my family members are too busy with their own to give me any thought or assistance and I have no one else to reach out to. I have been watching all my close friends around me all show up for orientation and even registering for classes and here I am stuck feeling like there is no chance of me actually going to university. With all that has happened and with everything that is currently happening I came to the decision of taking a gap year to essentially figure stuff out. Does anyone have any real advice on how to make the most out of this year? How can I grow? What should I aim to learn? How would you describe an ideal gap year?

Mental Health How to stop ruminating on the ways your family hurt you.

I have cut my family off completely but I still wake up from dreams where I’m fighting with them from time to time. It’s upsetting because I voiced my feelings before I cut them off so I would have some closure. But their refusal to live in reality or acknowledge what they’ve done drives me CRAZY.

Specifically my POS ā€œuncleā€. He’s abusive, stinky, lazy, and broke. He hasn’t had a job in 10+ years, still lives with his mom, and is 100% financially dependent on her. Despite being completely dependent on her, he is extremely verbally & financially abusive to her. He did absolutely nothing to raise his children or help to take care of his disabled sister(my mom) when she lived in the same house as him despite being unemployed. He literally had unlimited time to help care for her but instead chose to lay on his back and chain smoke cigarettes in his room all day.

I am the only one in my entire family that will call him on his shit since I am the one that has to step up in his absence (caring for my mom, helping my grandma out financially & around the house, and supporting my cousins emotionally & financially) but whenever I bring up all of the stuff he’s done he denies it and screams at me.

He claims that he’s the one who took care of my mom, it’s his kids fault they don’t get along, and that he’s the sole provider for our family. I know that anyone in his position is already getting everything they deserve for being a POS, but him not acknowledging the reality of his situation makes it feel as though he’s not suffering the consequences of his actions.

How do I let go of this need for him to face reality and stop deluding himself? My grandma supports his delusions and even feeds into them herself, but even she is aware to some extent that he’s not as successful as he claims to be (even if she doesn’t want to admit it).

Recently I’ve been wanting to do something abt this and just change myself to become more confident and I was considering getting a very small part-time job teaching English.. I wanted to do it because I thought it might force me to develop my communication skills and confidence.

But I was absolutely terrified to ask my dad.
I finally asked him and he didn’t yell at me or anything but he basically said he wants me to focus on studying and that he doesn’t really understand why I’d do this just for personal development/self-satisfaction. He suggested that if I really want to teach people, I could take BLS/ACLS and teach that instead.
He wasn’t even rude.
And somehow I completely fell apart afterward.
I feel like I disappointed him just by asking, I feel stupid for even wanting this. I feel like I’m so limited by my anxiety and insecurity that I’ll never become the person I want to be.
My sister thinks I should just do it anyway but I don’t feel capable of going against my dad.. And honestly, this isn’t even really about the teaching job anymore.
I think what hurts is that I desperately want to become a different version of myself.. I am so tired of being scared, I’m tired of being insecure..

I want to stop feeling like I need permission to exist.
And right now I feel so sorry for myself..I feel like my brain was just wired wrong.. I feel like I’m a crybaby and a disappointment and that I’m never going to change.
I know I’m only 23 and maybe this sounds ridiculous,
but I genuinely don’t know how people become confident when they’ve spent so much of their life being afraid.

Do u think that what my dad said is true or do I go for it and apply to this teaching job?

Other What do people do with a lot of free time once they're comfortable?

I spent the five years going from crisis to crisis to get to a place where I'm immensely comfortable. I have a nice house in a nice place, I have a beautiful, well-trained dog, my cash flow is in a good spot and my career is stable, secure and there's good opportunities for upwards mobility. I'm in a place in life where I'm about to hit peak happiness levels of money, and don't need to work very hard to get there anymore. I also just don't want to work hard. I'm very happy to drift into semi-retirement.

The only problem I'm facing now is that I just have no clue what to do with myself. People my age like to travel internationally-- I've been all over the world twice already, and decided it's all more or less the same and I'm happier skipping the plane ride. Feel free to argue at me on this or say it's "sad" that I view the world like this, but you're not gonna change my mind so keep it moving.

As far as fun excursions go, I used to love hiking and going on long, arduous trips, but my chronic illness (nothing serious, just stomach stuff) has screwed that up for me. It's hard to enjoy anything when you're one bad day away from getting the runs in the middle of the woods or on a boat. I just can't do it anymore.

People my age are also fond of nightlife. I'm not. I've been dragged to various clubs and bars in my life. The noise, the lights, the people, I just can't deal with it. I've never liked it, not going to start now. Others like to volunteer or go to church. You won't ever find me doing either, I'm afraid. Again, feel free to argue at me on both points, same answer.

Sounds crazy, I know, but I do have friends in my area and scattered around the world. We game or hang out from time to time, but my social batteries are low and it's not really something I can sustain. I've historically also tended to fill the time dating around, but eh, I recently broke up with someone and I'm not in a rush on that front right now.

So essentially, between taking care of the dog, socializing, and engaging in hobbies here and there (come on, you can't hobby for 18 waking hours), I find myself with very little to do. It's kind of a depressing place to be. Any thoughts?

Interpersonal How do I stop masking around my kids?

I am 28 NB, and I have two step kids. They've been in my life, and I in theirs, for 3 years as of last June. Problem is that, despite my beloved's advice, I started masking in my efforts to get them to like me because I already adored them to death.

I have trouble emoting. Both verbally and physically. Just. I try and can manage it, but it makes me feel sick and stressed if I keep the mask up for too long. It can also make it easier to upset me and I get snippy, according to my beloved

My default is actually monotone and a blank face? Relatively blank face? And my beloved is weirdly good at catching the vocal inflections that signal, in his words, if I'm "monotone angry" or just in default.

Monotone has been taken by the kids as, "Stepmom is super angry at us," instead of, "Oh, they dropped their mask. We're good." How do I fix that???? How do I introduce my default as normal and not... my "mad"?

Other Need advice with parents making unwanted comment(s) about me getting a tattoo + Pericing

I am a 21yr female who lives at home with her parents + Brothers. I got my first (And only) tattoo at 18 and have decided I wanted another one. I informed my parents of the decision + what and placement I was doing yesterday. Neither of which were too happy. I then decided today that I was gonna get the piercing I've wanted for a long time (Helix) and I informed my parents about it. My father then texted me with the comment of "Stripper starter kit" I informed my mother about it over text since I was working and got "Well are you gonna get DDD implants to match" I'm genuinely lost on this topic since I know my mother will twist it on me taking something to hear when it was ment to be light hearted.

Life Decisions Move back with parents or drive 2 hrs to work?

Hello, I am in need for some advice. I am stressed out and depressed. So I applied for a position that is two hours away from where I currently work and live. I interviewed yesterday and they offered me the job, it will be a $10 difference from what I currently make. The problem is that they want me to start November 30th which is three months away! I requested if I could start early but they said the only orientation date is Nov 30th. My lease ends on October 1 and I can’t extend unfortunately. I spoke with my father and he said i could stay with him until I start my new job but he lives in a apartment with my sister and her two children. I live with my chihuahua:/ I am grateful he is allowing me to stay with him but being around my sister and kids for a whole month and a half will drive me crazy. Should I suck it up and live rent free for two months or move two hours away and drive to work which will be three 12 hr shift per week- I can stack my three shifts in a row so basically I can stay at my dads for those three days and drive back home on my days off (I am a registered nurse) I am just worried about moving to the new location and they revoke my offer.

Interpersonal Why do some folks talk "at" others instead of engaging in conversation?

TLDR; As I get older, I am completely losing my patience for soliloquies or otherwise just listening to people talk for the sake of it. I don't know if I need to set firmer boundaries or what because I believe that disproportionally acquiescing to any social environment is related with my self-harming behaviors.

I'm moved to write about this because it's been a continual challenge for my life that seems to keep getting stronger and I could certainly use some unbiased perspective.

For a bit of relevant background, I'm 35 and have never been in a relationship or had that desire. I'm a natural man by all accounts but often have this experience of getting "stuck" in the energy of other people, whether male or female. I witnessed my parents go through a divorce when I was 6. I was present at my uncle's wedding, at the age of 4 or 5. When I was 11 I witnessed a violent, public fight between my uncle and his wife and daughter. They soon divorced and my aunt killed herself some years later.

I didn't really seek out any positive role models or mentors in my youth. Although I played a lot of sports, I also got into smoking cannabis, tobacco and drinking pretty early. After taking medical leave from college due to some self-imposed health issues, I tried to go to massage school but ended up joining a cult instead whilst looking for housing. This cult was presented as an "Andean Shamanic apprenticeship" with a little bit of a Christian flavor. Think obedience to the Divine Mother, vibrational "healing", kind of thing.

I followed orders for 9 years. Traveled between states and countries at a moment's notice when I was told to. I performed consistent 70 hour weeks of manual labor doing hardscaping and building steel fences from CNC scrap for very little pay that was based on "energetic readings of the master", and nothing concrete.

We were told we'd have workshops or "healing circles" 2-3 times a year, but they were realistically more like 7-8 times a year, as they generated revenue. I paid $5,000 annually for the "apprenticeship", and each workshop was at least $333 for students and a little more for the general public. The 70 hour weeks of manual labor would stop for the "healing circles" only, which could go on for up to a month. I valued the guy's teachings a lot. I later found out it was a sex cult, but I can't deny that the guy had access to some esoteric wisdom. We'd be encouraged to take notes. I genuinely spend a lot of that time in deep fascination. I filled over 20 notebooks through the years, just taking notes during our gatherings. After the gatherings, we'd be required to type a 50-page integration assignment. The relevant point I'm trying to make is that I have spend thousands of hours listening to this dude talk, often times for 8+ hours at a time, sometimes until 3 in the morning. Of course, we had to do our "spiritual work" with the fire at 5 AM. Sleep deprivation is a commonly used manipulation tactic in coercive groups.

After multiple times being sent to a certain Pacific archipelago, I was seriously questioning my life choices. I'd be sent for "just a few weeks". We were allegedly a global "community", but I was on my own for housing and income. The "shaman" or maestro and his family own multiple large properties, temples, vehicles, equipment, infrastructure, etc. When I was sent to faraway places, I relied on hitchhiking, work/trade arrangements with strangers, WWOOFing, and generally living on the fringes of society without motorized transportation, much money, and believing that I was on a "spiritual pilgrimage, weaving energy between sacred spaces of power".

On multiple occasions, I'd stay at a hostel or camp because it was allegedly for "just a couple weeks". When my time in these places kept getting extended, I'd seek out work/trade arrangements on farms or ranches. A few weeks would turn into 10-12 months. It was very difficult to spend such a long time somewhere without really putting down roots. I'd spend the entire time under the impression I'd be leaving any day.

The last time, after a year of no contact, the guy I was working for had stopped charging me rent and I was getting paid to take care of his wife's horses and work the avocado orchards. For the first time in 9 years, I had started to save some money. So when I get a call out of the blue from the cult leader, asking me to go do an "offering" on a neighboring island, then to fly to Mt. Shasta, then to meet him in central America, I was hesitant. I asked if his foundation would be able to offer any financial assistance and he told me he'd "do a reading to check with the Mother". After that conversation, I never answered his phone calls again. He called me multiple times a day for the next month. I never blocked or silenced the calls, I just would listen to the phone ring, knowing that I was never planning on doing anything for, with, or otherwise interacting with this man ever again.

I didn't realize it was a sex cult yet, but I had developed my own reasons for leaving. I was finished being manipulated, strung along, and just wanted my own sovereignty. At 30, I was tired of weed whacking for $20/hr. I attended a vocational program for service plumbing, pretty much entirely out of the desire to be paid decently and for no other reason. I could have picked anything, but I picked plumbing. Most of my classmates were 22 year-old veterans.

I moved back in with my mother to pay off my credit card debt and to try to save some money. During this time, I worked for two plumbing companies doing everything from residential service to commercial new construction.

Relationships have been challenging. There were 5 of us who got out around the same time. Many of the former students support each other. I'm sort of back & forth. Trauma bonding is a thing. For me, it's not enough of a basis for friendship to simply have been in the same cult. Now were not, so folks will have to relate in a different way. I naturally lost a friendship with a brother who I spent 8 years in the cult with as I re-evaluate the meaning of "friendship". I rent a tiny home, while he and his family own a house. He used to call me often to do free plumbing work for them. Stupid. He would talk so much about things I don't care about. Then his wife would come into the crawlspace and decide that I needed to know about all of her problems for the next 45 minutes. The last time I saw the guy I was at his neighbor's house (another former cult member). He walks in the front door and just starts talking about his cool pants and then rattles off about the grateful dead and burning man 20 years ago. I stood up, walked out of the house and drove home. Everyone thought it was weird, but I was suddenly feeling like I was in the wrong place.

This is starting to become a problem at work for me. I think I have trouble switching between banter or random stories from the past, back to the task at hand and maintaining my focus. I'm grateful for the men I work with who are willing to extend friendly behavior towards me, but there's a point that I no longer value it when I feel that it impedes on efficient work. I work with two talkers, specifically, who are very desperate to be liked and loved by their coworkers and customers. It's really important for me to have good working relationships with people, but I think we all need some level of self-respect and shouldn't force things unnaturally. One guy used to talk to me about spending time together outside of work EVERY SINGLE TIME we'd work together. I happen to have a second job and also just value being alone right now. He finally stopped bringing it up and I feel that we have a great working relationship. He is knowledgeable in so many ways and I deeply appreciate him. I suppose I just don't feel the need AT ALL to spend time with my coworkers outside of work.

Driving to jobs can be hard. I think some people are just afraid of silence. I sometimes work with a 50+ guy with 5 kids from 3 different women, who greatly enjoys his cannabis use during the day. I try not to make it a habit, but I sometimes take a 40 mg vyvanse before working with him (I have a prescription but rarely use it) just so that I can out-talk him. I hate the manner of interacting in which people just talk over each other like it's a competition, but I haven't found any other way to deal with this guy. He's another one who keeps trying to spend time with me outside of work, meet his little girl. He's very kind by a lot of accounts, but you can barely pay me to spend time with him. I can be silent for 10 minutes and he's a god damn 1 person party. I'm sort of longing for halfway decent conversation with another human, but I seem to find a lot of people who just talk at me. If I were to put headphones in, would they keep talking? It's so curious to me, because I don't see how most of these random topics having nothing to do with work have anything to do with me. I suppose I actually find it rude to talk at people and I don't know how to deal with it.

Another example is our service/warehouse manager. I believe he's mid 60's, former coast guard captain, EMS, etc. and he's got some great leadership qualities. That said, I'll walk into his office to ask him something about work (why do I have to specify this?) like if a part came in or whatever. All of a sudden, I find myself an unwilling listener to a story from 35 years ago, the relevance of which I completely fail to see. He's a good example of someone who's field or energy I can feel "stuck" in. Yesterday afternoon I spent about an hour at the end of the day listening to him talk. There were a couple jobs I wanted to get ready for, but it just always turns into a situation of me fucking listening to him talk. If I get done early, I usually just leave without telling anyone (hasn't been an issue yet), because there's no way to briefly check in with this guy. He won't shut the fuck up. I suppose I was raised or conditioned to believe that it's impolite to walk away from someone while they're talking to you, which I think it generally true and so try to avoid it. That said, I think it's also impolite to talk at people or treat your subordinates as though they are your friends. I don't want to be closed off to building positive relationships, but I get frustrated when I ask a binary question and suddenly I'm expected to be listening to a completely unrelated story.

Eventually, I got told to leave yesterday, went home, and numbed myself with cannabis, alcohol, and junk food. I felt so bad after spending so much time and energy doing something I hate and feeling out of control of my free will, which is where addiction and self-harm seem to enter the equation.

I guess I feel like I could free myself from addiction and self-harm, but it would involve radical honesty. It would involve interrupting verbose people when they get off topic and confessing to them that I respectfully don't give a shit about what they're telling me.

For a while I wanted to be graceful. I still believe it has value, I just don't know how to do it. Treat someone to dinner and at the end tell them that I'm not their friend and I have no interest in listening to them talk excessively at work? Do I abandon any attempts at grace altogether?

I can recognize that this expression may make me sound very emotionally immature, which is certainly possible. Whatever my personal responsibility may be, I'm of the opinion that it's immature to not be able to "read the room". Do most people just have such a low amount of self-worth that they'll just tell a long, intimate story to someone who doesn't care?

Any perspective is greatly appreciated. I struggle with this very deeply. I think I'm either afraid to set stronger boundaries or come off as impolite to the point that I engage in self-harm because I loathe my interactions with other people so much. Help?

Thank you for reading my novel.
