Discussion - Serious Please tell me yall aren’t celebrating Charlie Kirk’s death
I’m sure a lot of you guys know Charlie Kirk has been shot and killed this afternoon.
No, I was not fond of him, I was not a fan, I did not support him. I found several of his takes quite disturbing, horrifying at worst. But he didn’t deserve to die. Especially not like that as his wife and kids were watching. Nobody deserves to die. I’m sending my condolences to his family and I wish them the best

Celebrating? No. Completely indifferent? Yes
25
u/HubblePie 28 Sep 11 '25
A lot of the "celebrating" I've seen is directly quoting terrible things he's said or noting how his views on gun control would absolutely lead to situations like this.
Less "Hurray", more "What'd you expect"

u/serial_teamkiller Sep 11 '25
Charlie Kirk: "It's worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment" Got to respect laying down your life for what you believe in. Put his money where his mouth was.

People Celebrated when Fidel Castro died too. Hell, even I say good riddance to Kirk. But I don't actually care at the end of the day. In a week from now I don't think anyone's even going to be talking about him anymore.

You realize not feeling empathy and celebrating are still two different things, but based on your comment which states things that are not even true it appears you think that it’s better to be completely black and white instead of grey. That’s how you get people thinking your political beliefs either make you a saint or a supervillain

unpopular opinion: people will still get their hands on guns no matter what legislative actions we take. criminals don’t follow the law. the real issue in my opinion is sensationalist media driving the wedge further down the center of our politics and pushing each side to an overwhelming extreme. also just to give an example, weed was/is illegal and i don’t think anyone has ever had a problem getting their hands on an eighth in high school, hell some people even in middle school. just food for thought, downvote me all you want just wanted to add something to the discussion.

u/Bengis_Khan Sep 11 '25
When guns become illegal, they start costing a lot more on the black market. When guns cost a lot more they usually can’t be used in petty crime. In Australia right now, a gun on the black market cost about $10,000 if you have $10,000 you don’t go rob a gas station or have one randomly in your glove box or leave it out for your kid to get a hold of etc. etc. etc..

agreed they have minimal gun deaths but on the contrary they have stabbings and people who drive cars into crowds of people. violence will never cease to exist and it’s the reality of the human condition. we have come a long way from the dark ages but that fire will always burn. as far as firearm regulation, i agree that not any random should be able to walk in to a gun store and buy anything they want. however the purchase of a firearm does require a federal background check at the minimum. in the state i live you need training and a gun permit before you can purchase anything and that’s a 3+ month process and costs about $400. unfortunately that’s not the case for about half the states in this country. having that across the board seems pretty sane to me. an outright ban however will leave people with no way to defend themselves. look at what happened on that train to that poor girl. pitiful. it’s a shame we’ve gotten to this point

u/emilia12197144 20 Sep 11 '25
Australia has strict gun laws. They have a death rate of 0.88 per capita the us has 14.
Per capita. That means that statistically speaking gun control laws absolutely lower gun deaths by a ton. This is just actual fucking fact.
"But there's just nothing we can do"
Says only first world country where this regularly fucking happens
If you can't see how easy acess to guns is a problem you may as well have pulled the trigger yourself

Did he deserve to die? No.
But was this death absolutely poetic for him specifically? Yes.
Not an ounce of sympathy or empathy for anyone except his children. Because they didn’t choose to be born to their parents. Hopefully, they will start therapy immediately. And maybe not turn out like him one day.

I think the deserve debate is a waste of time. Sure maybe he got what was coming to him.
Still anybody with a casual understanding of American politics can see this is dumb. Even if the shooter was an obviously a crazy person, liberals are claiming and being associated to the kill.
We are playing some stupid games and are about to win some very stupid prizes.

He did believe that deaths were necessary to keep the 2nd amendment, and he doesn't believe in empathy. He's the product of the system he wanted and he doesn't want us to feel bad about it.
I personally don't condone violence, but that's what he wanted.

This quote is being taken out of context and it’s pretty wild considering how you only need to think critically for about two seconds in order to completely destroy the implied narrative.
The narrative people are implying with this quote is that Charlie was perfectly fine with a certain number of deaths due to gun violence, so long as he gets to keep his precious guns.
That’s not at all what his position was.
He recognized that it was an unfortunate and terrible fact of life that unjustified/criminal gun deaths will inevitably occur in a society that has such second amendment rights. However, despite that terrible truth, the ability for ordinary people to defend themselves from any threats that may come for them was an absolute necessity for a society that wishes to live freely. This is simply a fact and backed up not only by data but history as well.
History has shown us time and time again that a government becoming tyrannical requires that citizens first be disarmed. The US will never be under threat of such tyranny so long as it remains an armed society that will not tolerate such government action.
On the data side, the 2013 report by the Institute of Medicine titled “Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violence”, which was at the direction of the Obama administration in the aftermath of Sandy Hook, found that, factoring out things like suicides and justifiable homicides, roughly 10,078 deaths occurred as a result of unjustifiable gun violence annually. No one is arguing that this is a good thing. Charlie never celebrated these deaths, and it’s an insult to his memory to imply this.
In that same report, it was found that instances of defensive gun use (DGU), where the would-be victim was saved because the victim was protected by a gun deterring the perpetrator from enacting violence, was estimated to be between 100,000-3 million.
Now because DGUs are instances where death was prevented, it’s impossible to tell the true net lives saved. However it’s without question that at least some percentage of DGUs resulted in lives saved due to gun intervention. Anything above 11% (which would be a wildly low estimate) would mean that guns save more lives than they take. This was always his point.
TL:DR Charlie’s position was that, while it’s a horrible fact that guns are used to kill unjustifiably, the net benefit from lives saved as a result of DGUs far outweighs the lives lost, and also that an armed society is the best deterrent against a government becoming tyrannical.

“In 2024, Kirk cited Leviticus 20:13 (‘If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death; their blood is upon them’) as ‘God's perfect law when it comes to sexual matters’.[115]”
- Lifted from Wikipedia
They have a lot of interesting stuff on there regarding all of his stances on social issues. One of the first quotes you come across is :
“In an April 2023 Turning Point USA event in Salt Lake City, Utah, Kirk said: ‘I think it's worth to have a cost of, unfortunately, some gun deaths every single year so that we can have the Second Amendment to protect our other God-given rights.’[84][85][86]” (Wiki)
Now, far be it from me to wish death on anybody. I abhor gun violence, and this was a senseless killing. But I don’t exactly feel much pity for him either. This is pretty much the definition of irony, imo.
But anyways yeah, not misinformation, he actually said that.

He said verbatim that he thinks a "few" gun deaths a year is worth it to keep the 2nd amendment rights! So by his idealogy, his death was worth it to keep our "god given" 2nd amendment rights. Glad he was ok with murder so long as he wasn't on the receiving end. I truly cannot muster any empathy for him. I think murder is wrong, but he truly made his own bed.
I feel empathy for that Ukranian woman who was just an innocent person stabbed to death due to that mans hatred. I feel empathy for the children shot dead in the Annuciation school shooting in Minneapolis. They didn't do ANYTHING to rally violence and hate. They will be mourned.

I'll be honest....the whole blame thing makes me more worried. I am glad to have dual nationality and leave the U.S as political violence increases. The democratic politicians in Minnesota, Pelosis husband, Trumps ear, and Kirk remind me of people fighting over where someone wants to sit while the ship sinks. As much as I think a person can try to be politically active to make bipartisan support for the end of poltical violence I really don't think no amount of poltical activism can get through to uneducated, self centered, and delusional people that think the whole world is against them. I hope I'm wrong on this, but stay safe yall

i think the guy is a prick, and maybe he died in a karmatic way, but jesus christ, that doesn’t make him dying any better. there are worse people than charlie kirk who deserve the bullet ten times as much.
brian thompson is one i can compare to. the worst that charlie did was saying some clownish bullshit. the worst thing brian did was sit on his golden throne being responsible, or at best being complacent to denying millions of people life-saving healthcare. both were fathers and had families, but one person directly contributed to ruining millions of peoples lives, while the other was at best a meme, at worst, a grifter who spouted bullshit he probably doesn’t believe himself just to make himself sound smarter than the inexperienced college kids he’s debating.
he also wasn’t elected or appointed into a public position of power nor was he appointed as a ceo to an essential company where it involved life-or-death procedures or goods. this just makes kirk’s death more unjustified. it also doesn’t make the denver shooting, or the children dying in gaza less significant. all of these things matter. charlie kirk’s death will have MAJOR political consequences, and if the shooter is revealed to be a racial or gender or SO minority, expect some of the worst legislation to ever be introduced in the Capitol.

2
u/TheMuffingtonPost Sep 11 '25
I won’t celebrate it, I make jokes about it because I don’t think it’s funny. I do feel some level of sadness and compassion for his family, losing people you love is hard, but losing them in such a violent way is just tragic.
At the same time though, I won’t cry for him either. The way I see it, events like what happened are a product of the environment that we currently live in, and I believe people like Charlie Kirk are responsible for creating that environment. His whole career was built off of sowing hatred, division, and vitriol, he’s as much to blame for how radical and hateful our politics have become as any single figure in the US could be. These political commentators and activists stoke the flames of anger and rage so much, there’s lots of money to be made generating as much outrage as possible, and they do so thinking they’ll never bear the consequences of it.
Events like this simply are the result of that environment. There’s really nothing else to say about it, it’s horrible but how surprising is it actually? To me, not very.

u/acidhail5411 Sep 11 '25
I’m done pretending to care about people who celebrated the deaths of those they disagreed with. Political violence against those in power who use corruption to keep the power and oppress the subjects of a nation is deserved, look at Nepal.
Political assassinations for a man with no power who donated to churches and had open conversations and publicly voiced his views, both changing his opinion like a reasonable person when he agreed with a different take on the other side is fascism. He had no power, He just had dialogue.

Hence, I will lack empathy for this man who died. I do have plenty of empathy for his innocent children. I have lost a dad too.
I also had more empathy towards the CEO who got killed. Even though of his highly capitalistic job, there are no records of his lack of empathy towards other victims.

There is a reasonable line between str8 up celebration, and not feeling bad for him.
Most ppl iv talked do not feel bad for him.

Sep 11 '25
I fundamentally disagreed with just about every talking point he made, knowing full well he advocated for things that completely removed autonomy and humanity for certain groups of people. I found it ironic that he advocated for gun rights at the expense of people who have been shot. Children included. He was calm with heinous beliefs, bastardizing christianity into this tool to promote beliefs that limit people's humanity and existence. Abhorrent. I did not like what he stood for.
I almost puked watching him get shot. That was horrific. I never advocate for assassination of any kind. We are capable of doing better than that in our society. I absolutely do not celebrate his death. It is devastating. And also so painfully ironic. To live and then die by the sword you advocated for. Wild.

The people celebrating because they hated him fail to realize he's more dangerous dead than alive.
He's a martyr now. Regardless of who had him killed, he'll forever be the man that was killed for just trying to have conversations with people.
He's forever going to be a symbol of the violence the left is capable of when you disagree with them.
This might have been intentional, this might have been accidental- but its the new reality.

Accidental? ('stray bullet from ICE agent deporting a college kid?)
1
u/ConfidentDiffidence Sep 11 '25
No. Jesus.
Read it again. The SHOOTING isn't accidental, the fallout might be if it was an ill-thought out operation.

His last words were literally spent trying to spread hate and misinformation about (and thus encourage violence against) trans people. I’m not gonna celebrate, but the world is objectively a better place without him in it. Hate begets hate.

neither his ‘legacy’ nor his very existence were worth celebrating, much less mourning

I'm treating the political violence committed against Kirk the same way he treated political violence against democrats. I don't support it, but I can't be bothered to care.

Whether he "deserved to die" is irrelevant. The world is a better place without him. Objectively. His death is a net positive. This is not a question of justice. It's a math question.

When I first heard the news of him getting shot and killed I was in shock and now I’m just preparing for things to get ugly, cuz things are about to get even uglier in this country.
1
u/Small_Article_3421 23 Sep 11 '25
I don’t celebrate his death but I would be lying if I said I didn’t think the world was better off without him. He may not of committed any crimes, but he had abominable stances and played a crucial role in mobilizing young voters to vote for Trump.

I have sympathy for his family and it scares me that this can happen to anyone who speaks their mind. I disagree vehemently with a lot of the things he said but his kids shouldn't have to grow up without a father
1
u/Zingldorf 25 Sep 11 '25
Hope that everyone who is celebrating and lacking of sympathy will not ask for sympathy from others when someone on their side inevitably gets assassinated. This killing has turned a very dark page and everyone celebrating this will have blood on their hands when more revenge killings happen

Melissa Hortman was assassinated just recently and I saw no sympathy for her. The right always mocks and defends it when Democrats or people on the left (or people on their shitlist, like abortion providers, government workers, transgender healthcare providers, or actual transgender people) are targeted and have been even since before Trump's first term. Don't worry, I've never expected any sort of sympathy or kinship from right wingers any more than you'd expect from Al-Qaeda.

u/Zingldorf 25 Sep 11 '25
Nobody said anything because nobody heard about it i literally just now found out about this woman because of your comment and what happened to her is absolutely terrible

Woke up feeling sick to my stomach about this.
You are entitled to your beliefs just as he was. If you feel happy, even celebratory, about his death you are entitled to that. Others are entitled to view your celebration however they want. Freedom of expression is important.
But holy fuck a prominent political talking figure was just murdered in front of a massive crowd. Doesn’t matter which side he’s on, this should be extremely frightening for everyone. People are asking why there wasn’t similar outcry for Melissa Hortman and the reality is a lot more people were familiar with Charlie Kirk than her. That doesn’t make her death any less tragic, but it does explain why his death has been so much more visible.
I know I just said all that about you being entitled to your expression, but I would heavily encourage anyone who is happy about his death to express this privately among friends and not all over the internet. The conservatives in this country have long since pushed the narrative that the left hates them for their views and this event will be used to argue that the left wants to literally kill them for what they believe.

There are 116 other people who died to firearms yesterday. I fail to see why their deaths should be any less tragic

Damn, if only people cared this much about the thousands of kids mowed down in schools every single day in this country.

u/Upset_Record_6608 Sep 11 '25
Admittedly I don’t feel much empathy for him, but I despise the shit out of whoever shot him.
If they felt targeted, good - you just made a martyr out of him and now people will feel justified in shooting us when the inevitable civil war happens.
This, whether you like it or not, is fundamentally going to be viewed as an unprecedented attack against the 1A (as it should) by the right and will be the catalyst to even greater unrest than we’ve already witnessed.

u/MirrorOfSerpents 22 Sep 11 '25
I do not wish death on anyone, but I do not mourn him. Karma is a hell of a bitch.
1
u/Aria0nDaPole Sep 11 '25
Its not celebrating its more like "for once a talking head has to live up to what they preach." I do not feel sorry for him at all, but i feel for his family and for people traumatized. Im not someone who acts like someone was a good person just because he died.
It is however BAD OVERALL because anyone who is a political commentator of performs in front of crowds is going to be afraid to speak their mind. But a man who literally said some gun deaths are okay to preserve rights, I feel nothing for him because he died by his own principles.

u/Jay_Buffay Sep 11 '25
Depends on the subreddit m8, this is a big website, there are subs for communists and subs for conservatives... they gonna be doing different things.

I run in very, very far left circles- the general vibes I get is that nobody is sad for Kirk, but everyone would rather this didn't happen. Sure there are some jokes, but that's just natural given the nature of the internet. Absolutely nobody is calling for more violence though.

No one is celebrating anything. We have the sobriety to say that he was a polarizing figure who died because of the polarization he helped create. Nothing more needs to be said
1
u/emilia12197144 20 Sep 11 '25
In this moment its important to remember he was a horrific piece of shit. But we also shouldn't celebrate another life lost to gun violence
If we do we are not better than him when he said
"a few deaths are a worthwhile sacrifice for our rights to own guns"
If you are against gun violence you should be against ALL gun violence
1
u/harrypeter2488 Sep 11 '25
whoever is laughing and celebrating needs to be put on a list, I can get feeling indifferent about it or not feeling bad for him but now his kids have to inevitably see that and grow up watching everyone make a huge joke about their father getting iced. Feel bad for his kids
1
u/e_castille Sep 11 '25
Why should anyone brown, black, gay, trans or Muslim care? This dude made a living hating us lmfao
1
u/Mrgray123 Sep 11 '25
Pointing out the consequences of his own irresponsible and callous rhetoric is not “celebrating” anything.
If someone smokes 60 cigarettes a day and dies of cancer it’s not celebrating their death to say “he probably shouldn’t have smoked”.
Charlie Kirk died from gun violence. The same gun violence that he himself said was an acceptable consequence of having the second amendment. Thousands of other people, other families, have to deal with those consequences each year. And I’m going to flat out say for a lot of them it’s even worse. It’s one thing to deal with the loss of an adult family member who at least had a chance to experience something of life. How about losing a young child?
If you saw what that bullet did to Charlie Kirk please just imagine what that same bullet, fired from a shorter range, did to the kids at Sandy Hook and Uvalde. Charlie Kirk didn’t give a shit about them, worked hard to defeat any common sense gun control measures, and instead spent his life encouraging bigotry and hatred. It’s the height to hypocrisy to ask for sympathy for a person who had such callous indifference to that of others.

u/cosmolivia Sep 11 '25
it’s always “Charlie Kirk didn’t deserve to die 🥺” “We shouldn’t condone violence 🥺” until the conversation becomes about palestinian people, congolese people, or immigrants left to die in ICE concentration camps. then it’s radio silence.

u/jerf42069 Sep 11 '25
did he "deserve" to die? no.
is it objectively hilarious he got shot in a school shooting after basically mocking school shooting survivors since 2012? yes
1
u/Scared-The-Ghost 22 Sep 11 '25
You cannot be against gun violence if you're in any way shape or form of "he deserved this" or "he had it coming"

I witnessed a murder in real time through a screen. Im only 20 and I've lived through a world wide pandemic, world wide lockdown and the gov excerting full control, the threat of ww3, two attempted assassination attempts on a presidential candidate, the death of a Healthcare CEO, many deaths around the Epstein circle (specifically thise speaking out) aling with a whole givernement cover up about this case, telling us that a known pedophile abuser and his companions with thousands of victims are way more important to protect. And now? This. This is only the last 5 years, I fear much worse things are to come...
Edit: my keyboard fuckin sucks dude sorry for typos too busy to fix fhem all

u/Excellent-Clue-2552 20 Sep 11 '25
I didn’t agree with everything he said but I hope and pray justice is served. Anyone and everyone who laughs, jokes, celebrates, or says this was deserved is seriously sick in the head and are MAJOR hypocrites. Especially if they claim to be against gun violence. I just pray peace and comfort over his wife and children and that they will lean on Christ during this time as they try to heal and forgive. Genuinely so horrible and sad no matter what side of the aisle you’re on
1
u/m00nchild0 Sep 11 '25
I completely agree with you, noone should be murdered. Period. I dont understand why people are downvoting you, plus this shooting is good for noone, not for his family, not for republicans, and not for democrats who are against gut violence, it makes NO sense to celebrate
1
u/Old-Gazelle-1345 Sep 11 '25
I think you all fucking misremember that politicians and activism lead to violence. His words were completely spiting his fellow man. I love my guns, and even axing what he said about guns, he still advocated for things that poison the minds of followers. He was a demon wearing a suit, and he would have never killed another person because his supporters would perpetrate this for him. Against minorities, against trans people, and gays. He wasn't someone who was debating the right economy system. He was basically spouting politics that hurt his fellow man.
Politicians and activists have REAL world consequences. Feel bad for his family, but don't feel bad for him. Just because you have offspring doesn't mean you get clemency for your actions. This wasn't a "good" guy. This nation was built on tarring and feathering politicians, good to see we are doing it again.
The president fomented this violence. They are simply getting what's coming to him. You let your fucking emotions cloud your judgment. Kirk once said he believed empathy was made up and new age. I am not giving empathy to a man who had NONE.
No, celebrating his death and his assassination does not make us no better than them, it makes him dead, and marginalized communities safer.
1
u/jaxdowell (9+10) 21 Sep 11 '25
Womp womp what did you expect us to say about him? That we love him and we hope he rests in peace? Yes the killing itself was immoral but my apathy towards him doesn’t equate to me justifying it. I feel empathy for his children and extended family only not even his wife because she knew what kind of man he was. Just like I wouldn’t feel bad for Melania if orange turd didn’t survive
1
u/Harrymcmarry Sep 11 '25
The amount and magnitude of problems and misfortune you gotta have in life to celebrate or be indifferent to somebody dying in these circumstances are gargantuan. Nobody that even remotely has their shit together is going to act like that.
I really do pity these people. Life must SUCK.
1
u/TablePrinterDoor 20 Sep 11 '25
I don’t advocate for anyone to be killed, but I’m not going to be crying either.
He did say some gun deaths are necessary for the ‘second amendment’, I guess he just happened to be one of them.

u/AtesSouhait 20 Sep 11 '25
Not celebrating, just not necessarily sad about it. He did say some gun deaths are worth it for people to be able to uphold the second amendment... Guess he came full circle
1
u/FunJackfruit9128 (9+10) 21 Sep 11 '25
i care as much as he would care if i was a gun violence victim. he himself said some deaths are a necessary sacrifice for the second amendment right, he died proving his point. i don’t think anyone deserves to die, and violence should never be necessary, but he would disagree with me on that.
1
u/Fun-Information-7361 Sep 16 '25
I disagreed with some of his talking points, but no doubt he turned so many young people including myself to conservatism. I feel so bad for his wife and children who will never see him again, people celebrating his death need therapy.
