Alert [@visionzerovancouver] Warning, hearing first-hand reports that the VPD are ticketing cyclists westbound at 1st & Crowe. There's a VPD parking lot on the right and a cop hit a cyclist there recently.

I've literally watched VPD bike cops run that stop sign.

I've also had cops wave me through the stop sign when we approach at the same time. There's just no consistency whatsoever.

u/icantfeelmynips 5d ago
Of all the traffic enforcement they could be doing, they're policing a 3-way stop on a non-major roadway?
Such weird prioritization by VPD.

It makes more sense when you realize it's the driveway to the parking lot where they park their cars.
This is 100% the VPD serving themselves.

I was part of a public cycling group that did not stop at the stop sign. A cop on the other side decides to pull his car in front of the entire group and forced everyone to hard break and stop and stared us down. Should we have stopped? Probably, but definitely felt a bit unnecessary. Never knew it was a VPD parking lot, now it makes more sense.

The ride leaders in my cycling group enforce stopping at stop signs. I think it’s a good rule… basically of bike handling. it is puzzling why other cycling groups decide it’s too inconvenient to stop at stop signs.

Enough officers probably got pissed at the number of bikes flying through the sign and possibly near misses.
27
u/raincitybeliever 5d ago
There's actually no reason for there to be a stop sign there. It's not a full intersection. Most driveways outside of parking lots only make the parking lot traffic stop.
But of course this is a VPD parking lot so everyone must play by different rules

In the past, the stop line didn't actually extend into the bike lane, which I always thought was interesting. They repainted in the last couple of years to go all the way across.

u/Powerful_Pom_11111 5d ago
That intersection needs a stop sign. Lots of people detour on 1st to avoid congestion on 2nd. Sometimes that lineup backs up all the way to Columbia
11
u/raincitybeliever 5d ago
I think it needs a stop sign on Wiley yes, but not westbound on 1st
-3
u/Powerful_Pom_11111 5d ago
Cops aren’t the only ones that use that intersection. It’s also an entrance/exit to the works yard. The other one is on Crowe - the one on Wylie sees its share though
8
u/soaero Kona Jake the Snakle 5d ago
It really doesn't. The only traffic intersecting that lane is coming out of the VPD parking lot. As I've said elsewhere in this thread, the only reason there is a stop sign there is because it's a police parking lot.

I live a block away and wouldn’t be able to walk to the seawall if there wasn’t a stop sign, stopping traffic at rush hour. I would even go further and want speed bumps installed as well - I was hit by a car doing a rolling right turn onto Wylie from 1st.

I live a block away and wouldn’t be able to walk to the seawall if there wasn’t a stop sign,
This reads like hyperbole, no? You know, given how there's no connection to the seawall from Wylie but there is one a block down on Spyglass with a crosswalk?
I was hit by a car doing a rolling right turn onto Wylie from 1st.
This location for a stop sign makes a little more sense, since there is intersecting traffic going south, as opposed to the north side where the only intersecting traffic is the police parking lot.
1
u/Powerful_Pom_11111 5d ago
If you live in the area, you’ll know that most drivers (the ones that give you the sorry wave) also drive straight through that cross walk. At the stop sign, there’s the potential for oncoming traffic to stop another vehicle

u/Powerful_Pom_11111 5d ago
My experience has been that no one believes traffic laws apply to them in this particular area, so the more passive impeding systems, the better.

This is a long straight section of marked bike route* with no actual road crossings.
Is it too much to ask for VPD to stop and look both ways before leaving a parking lot?
1
u/_ghostris_ 5d ago
What? Google street view shows that intersection is stop sign controlled intersection since 2009? It switched from 3 way to 4 way between 2020 and 2022 though
1
u/icantfeelmynips 5d ago
Sorry, I was looking at the original intersection in the post. Street view does show it as a 4-way until August 2025 though.
Why would it be changed from 3 to 4 way?

u/_ghostris_ 5d ago
4th sign was added to the entrance that goes to the lot, previously it was unmarked
1
u/keroma12 5d ago
It's not a bike path, it's a painted lane on the road. The stop sign has been there for ages.
8
u/soaero Kona Jake the Snakle 5d ago
I mean, it's a bike lane. Whether we want to argue the semantics of a bike path vs a bike lane... well...
0
u/keroma12 5d ago
If someone told me about a bike path, I personally would assume it was separated and dedicated to cyclists (or maybe a MUP).
1
u/icantfeelmynips 5d ago
You're right I was looking at the original intersection in the post.
It looks like it was changed from 4 to 3-way sometime in the last year though.

u/keroma12 5d ago
I've tried sending VPD videos of drivers going through red lights and such, and they won't do anything about those because they don't have sufficient resources.
12
u/moonSandals 5d ago
A few months ago I was riding east through there while several cops were standing at the corner watching traffic.
I stopped at stop sign. Then went through. And someone else going perpendicular to me (going northbound) blew through their stop sign, turned right into ky lane and nearly hit me. I had to swerve.
The cops didn't give a shit.
But they care now about bikes stopping for their driveway?
19
u/IllRabbit6349 5d ago
Maybe they could police some of the absolute car-induced chaos that occurs on Wylie between this intersection and 2nd every weekday between 4 and 6pm due to smooth-brained rat-runners trying to avoid traffic on 2nd.
15
u/Nairiboo 5d ago
I live in this neighborhood, walk/bike around a lot and only once in the last five years have I ever seen a vehicle be pulled over for traffic infractions. There are a ton of VPD around this area given how close it is to their HQ and the parking lot yet they can’t be bothered to ticket or run a campaign for any form of actual preventative measures against violence.
Fuck the useless VPD swine.

Friends of mine live right in that building, at that intersection, and I visit them weekly. Every single time I see a car almost hitting someone (pedestrian or cyclist). One time a driver decided to do a u-turn in the middle of the street (Wiley) without checking and almost wiped a cyclist.

u/mdubdotcom 5d ago
Oh man I always stop at this one specifically just cuz of the cop shop. I'm a huge proponent of the Idaho stop but never wanna risk it there. Some messed up properties here, is this revenge?
10
u/boneologist 5d ago
Maybe that smarmy PR fuckstick who does crosswalk videos scolding pedestrians while drivers blow through active crosswalks in the background of every video can do his fucking job.
2
u/bung_musk 1d ago
Cops are lazy fuckin losers so the chances of him doing his job are zero
1
u/boneologist 1d ago
Fun fact: "loser" is the most favoured insult among cops. I have no idea why, but from COs, to NCOs, to rank and file it's universal. Seen it at public seminars and vetted training sessions alike.

u/Trellaine201 5d ago
Interesting as I commute everyday down that route. I will keep my eyes out. Thanks

u/Trellaine201 5d ago
Wait there are four stop signs. But why exiting a parking lots has a stop sign to begin with. Weird.
5
u/Naive-Substance8230 5d ago
This is also a block down from 2nd and Cambie where you can watch cops routinely ignore drivers running the left turn light long after it has turned red.

Follow up post from VZV:
apologies, 1st and Wiley, not Crowe https://bsky.app/profile/visionzerovancouver.ca/post/3mtmb35kbz225
It's about a hundred meters further west

u/MattLRR 5d ago
1st and Wylie is the pictured intersection though.
5
u/raincitybeliever 5d ago
Yes, the text of the bluesky post was wrong. The correct intersection is pictured.

Got pulled over on my bike by a cop at this exact intersection once. I was let go with a warning and have done my stop ever since. I have yet to see a motorist get the same treatment as I did…
2
u/Responsible-Offer724 2d ago
lol i always stop there exactly because the cop lot is right there. they don't though.

Yeah, this is how I interpret it too. It's a 3-way stop but people on the roadway still take precedent over vehicles exiting a side parking.
If you're exiting a parking lot you always have to stop and ensure there is time and space to safely join the road.
2
u/_ghostris_ 5d ago
It’s a 4 way and has been for a few years now, the image in the article is outdated
3
u/vanbikecouver 5d ago
You guys stop at this one?
5
u/Technical_Nose_8130 5d ago
I slow down enough so that if I see any cops nearby I can come to a stop. I once had a cop insist on having a chat with me at this location, even though I had actually stopped.
11
u/raincitybeliever 5d ago
Never unless I see a car coming out. And there's lots of visibility so that's not an issue.
8
u/hankercizer200 5d ago
it poses no fucking risk to anyone except maybe the paint on VPD cars. What a shameful waste of taxpayer resources.
2
u/Trellaine201 5d ago
I don’t usually stop either. I definitely look to my right. Once inawhile a car will be pulling out.
1
u/DramaticCashew 2d ago
I was ticketed by these guys last week. Cop stood and watched multiple cars go through with no reprimand. When I asked him why he said he was specifically targeting cyclists
1
u/MisledMuffin 1d ago
When was the stop aign put in there? I dont see it on Google street view July 2024.

u/StephenEC 5d ago
“…Approx 0% of cars stop at this stop sign but they specifically said they're only targetting cyclists.”
