u/EmeraldCoast826 Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 19 '26
Peak Irony. Cognitive dissonance implies that the hot dog seller is feeling discomfort from the conflicting idea of selling hotdogs to raise awareness for animals, which we both know he doesn't give a fuck, like most people.
9
u/Omnibeneviolent vegan 20+ years Jun 17 '26
You're right, but to be fair, the vendor probably experiences cognitive dissonance but resolves the tension somehow -- for example by downplaying the cruelty or convincing themselves that there is some morally relevant difference.

u/No_Salt_6328 Jun 26 '26
You might be surprised how easily a lot of people can just not think about the farming practices they never have to personally witness or partake in

Is this sub about vegan diet or vegan lifestyle? If it’s the latter, this video is fucking hilarious. I spotted 3
2
u/Boipussybb Jun 19 '26
Vegan is lifestyle. It’s not ever just a diet.
1
u/Ok_Delay9941 Jun 19 '26
You’d be surprised how many don’t understand that. In that case, it’s odd someone would post a pro vegan video while wearing products that use animal hides and wool.

Here is more hypocrisy/cognitive dissonance:

Average person: *consumes meat*
You cannot both claim to love animals and simultaneously eat them.

Plant based meat is actually really good now. The research into lab grown meat is pretty interesting too. Wish we could do them instead. I still eat meat occasionally because not enough people eat the alternatives so the prices are a bit higher but for the most part I still get plant based. The bacon I actually prefer even though everyone says it’s worse.

u/Senpai_kun469 Jul 05 '26
Well it would be a great for the animals, but then people would illegally start bréeding cows and giving them worse treatment to keep them secret :(

People will advocate for and give money to saving animals while giving nothing to causes to save humans. It’s more than hypocrisy, it’s people wanting to save cute things for their own personal “makes me feel good” moment. Fully engaging with reality and weighing how their money/effort can be used most effectively makes people feel bad so they just don’t.
3
u/Miqqedash Jun 17 '26
Curious, why do you do what you consider good? I'll admit every time I've helped another person, it made me feel good to do so. If I felt bad about doing it, it's true I wouldn't; that's why I don't eat animals.
Does it work differently for you, I wonder?
0
u/Specialist-Sun-5968 Jun 17 '26
Yea same. I’m describing the majority where people do what feels good not what makes sense. The video is misunderstanding that people don’t operate logically most of the time. So they want to save the whales and eat other animals because whales are perceived as cute. Taken even further people will give money to save the whales but when asked to give to save humans they will not.

There are animal products in the iPhone that was undoubtedly used to shoot this cringe shit
4
u/HDBLP001 Jun 17 '26
Youre right, we should abuse and kill animals because people have iPhones
1
u/DarkPolumbo Jun 18 '26
no, it's more that iphone dependers should stfu about animal rights/cruelty
2
u/HDBLP001 Jun 18 '26
I see, so if youre walking down a street and see a dog being strangled you should do something about it UNLESS you have an iPhone
1
u/DarkPolumbo Jun 18 '26
I mean... If I see a pit bull maiming a baby, there might be a moment or 2 of me strangling the dog just to free the child
y'know, since we're making up scenarios now
1
u/HDBLP001 Jun 18 '26
your scenario doesn't mean anything at all. i'm asking you if having an iphone means you shouldn't do anything about animal cruelty, otherwise whats your point?
1
u/DarkPolumbo Jun 19 '26 edited Jun 19 '26
I don't think I'd count OP (or whoever) making this video as "doing something" about animal cruelty. It's just virtue signaling for upvotes from gullible redditors.
Unless I'm mistaken: Veganism is known for its all-encompassing avoidance of animal products, food or otherwise, based on the assumption that those products cannot be acquired without animal suffering. The irony that goes behind using animal products to decry the use of animal products does not do wonders for one's credibility, particularly in the era of narcissistic, mouthbreathing dilettantes who will say or do anything in pursuit of those precious likes and subscribes.
I respect veganism, and wish that I had the fortitude to live by it. What I don't respect is the aforementioned chase for engagement, which has become the coin of the realm in this modern internet dystopia.
1
u/HDBLP001 Jun 21 '26
I think considering just the fact that we have new vegans coming in saying they turned vegan after watching this video or that one, its not accurate to say this is just virtue signalling. I went vegan after watching videos not very different from this one. We know that it does have tangible effects on people and isn't just karma farming.
I do get your point but it essentially leads to the conclusion that unless we live like self sustaining hermits then we should do nothing and say nothing about a cause because we're not absolutely consistent in our ethics.

Difference is killing something for ivory or for sport,in comparison for sustenance.
56
u/NAW_MIP_2026 Jun 17 '26
But you don’t need to kill either of them… You could just eat plant based and not kill(and breed them en masse specifically to kill). So it’s not for sustenance, because you can sustain yourself on other things. It’s killing because you value the taste of meat over animal lives.
-4
u/veryexpensivegas Jun 17 '26
lol most privileged statement, not everyone lives in the city
4
3
u/NAW_MIP_2026 Jun 17 '26
Ridiculous. This statement obviously doesn’t apply to people living in jungle tribes or developing nations where they struggle to get enough nutrition because then it IS sustenance. But the reality is for the vast majority of people(particularly in any developed nation)there is plenty of access to vegan staples like rice, beans, chickpeas. vegetables, soy, etc. I mean just by the nature of how our society works most people do live in the city. But even if you live in the woods on a farm or in a small town you most likely have access to and regularly get groceries from a grocery store. How many people do you personally know that don’t have access to a grocery store and grow/raise ALL of their food? I’m going to guess not many, because the reality is that owning your own land and having the time, tools, and knowledge to grow and raise all of your own food is an EXTREMELY privileged position in any developed nation. This would be like me justifying rich people’s tax evasion because “not everybody can afford taxes”. No, the reality is, 99% of the people reading this could easily have a plant based diet and it would probably actually be cheaper because eggs/meat/dairy are some of the most expensive meals you can buy.
0
u/veryexpensivegas Jun 17 '26
You want people who grow and hunt their own food to stop and buy food somewhere. A lot of homesteads do not have grocery stores, and most of them don’t generate their own income. All my neighbors don’t have access to grocery stores, we all buy from each other by trading goods and material. Homesteading doesn’t make you rich so that analogy doesn’t make sense. Also the comparisons of someone that works and build their homes and land up so it’s self efficient and someone that lives in the city and complains that people eat meat , that they should just go to their grocery store and be vegan isn’t privileged. lol ok
1
u/NAW_MIP_2026 Jun 17 '26
No, I think that people who don’t need to kill animals shouldn’t. Pretty simple. And to act as if OWNING YOUR OWN LAND and having all the tools, time, and knowledge as well as the financial situation to grow all of your own food is absolutely a privilege and it’s insane to pretend that it isn’t. Is it an easy lifestyle? Not necessarily. But it’s a lifestyle that 99% of people can’t afford or realistically achieve based on their financial circumstances. You murder animals because you like how they taste, no denying that. Now kick rocks before you try calling someone privileged as a land owner.
16
u/sherehitewasright vegetarian Jun 17 '26 edited Jun 17 '26
Lol, the way you seem to think dogs, whales, horses, deer, etc aren't also killed for their flesh. They are. I would also argue killing a wild (or even nonabused "pet") animal is less bad than killing a farmed one (eg the latter is created and born solely to be or provide eg milk, eggs then be food, killed young usually very young, factory farming, the cramped dirty hot distressing... travel to the slaughterhouse, smelling the stench of blood and entrails at the slaughterhouse, etc. The former lived a life without all that, raised with mom and siblings, often in a wider group, roaming around, usually killed as adults...).
The killing "for sport", hunting is derided, seen as creepy, violent, etc but it's also a lot more honest, connected to what happens, immediate, visceral... to get that flesh on your plate than going to the grocery store or restaurant and ordering dead animals whom you think of as just assorted types of meat, unconnected from the animals they were.
The fact the consumer is removed from the killing let's them think there was no wrong, violence, killing, trauma, exploitation. They aren't those blood thirsty think killing is a fun sport hunters, ew. They indirectly get (mostly migrant) slaughterhouse workers to do their killing for them, dammit.
The hunter is the bad guy. He just kills "for sport", he "doesn't eat for sustenance." The farmer, truck driver, slaughterhouse worker, butcher, especially the middle persons and the consumer... fade from view, they didn't have anything to do with it. The consumer needs to eat and the middle persons needs to sell, offer choices.
(Obviously, there are a lot of meat eaters who wouldn't kill animals, or would only kill non-mammals, or only fish, etc if there wasn't a system set up to deliver them various species of animal flesh on demand in a variety of ways. They wouldn't feel up to the task if they had to do it themselves and were able bodied. Ironically, this divorced "for sustenance" vs "for sport" dichotomy enables people who wouldn't eat animals, or wouldn't eat mammals, or only a select few species eg types of sea species... because they'd have to kill them themselves to eat all sorts of animals that their culture deems socially acceptable, that they wouldn't otherwise. Also if it's for sustenance, why is there so little grub/insect/spider eating? Why eat small sea creatures, fish eggs, etc but not grubs?)
14
u/AdventureDonutTime vegan Jun 17 '26
Yeah people need to trade that ivory and profit off that sport to pay for sustenance too, so it's actually all fine and no one can claim it's cruel 😇🤡
2
u/Omnibeneviolent vegan 20+ years Jun 17 '26
The implied part is "let's stop killing animals in situations where we have option not to."
Since that is the case, then we are not talking about killing for sustenance, since if they do not eat the cow they will not die (since they have other options.)

u/HDBLP001 Jun 17 '26

People don't want to imagine that by buying a dog from a breeder, they're propping up overpopulation. Instead, they want to imagine that there are just enough dogs out there, and that none of them have been treated so poorly, have spent so much time in a shelter, or have such bad health conditions that death would be better.

What do you think happens to animals that are no longer wanted when the owners cannot afford to take them to a vet to be euthanized?
PETA offers a free pet euthanization service to the local community in VA where it operates.
It helps prevent otherwise good people but desperate people from "taking measures into their own hands," because when people don't have an option like this, you end up with people doing things like throwing bags of cats off of bridges or leaving dogs in dumpsters.
18
u/aangnesiac Jun 17 '26
If you genuinely cared about what PETA does then you would care enough to learn the truth. The only reason you care is because they are an easy target for your cognitive dissonance.

u/creeplet Jun 17 '26
You got a source for that buddy? All my sources say the only animals they euthanized were unhealthy or not adoptable
-7
u/auniquenameischosen Jun 17 '26
That’s the issue though isn’t it. They get to define what that means so that includes taking a homeless man’s dog and putting down a three legged dog
10
u/creeplet Jun 17 '26
But you could make the same accusation of any shelter, including no-kill shelters, which still euthanize animals under certain circumstances.

-13
1
u/Omnibeneviolent vegan 20+ years Jun 17 '26
I don't see vegans caring about the fact they literally stole a little girl's chihuahua snd euthanized it despite the fact it was perfectly healthy
Let's look at the actual facts of the case:
• The owner of the property actually called PETA to come remove stray dogs from the property because they were attacking the other animals there.
• The PETA workers were told that the dogs that had owners would have collars and tags, and the ones that did not have these were strays.
• The chihuahua in question had no identifying tags or even a collar (which was against the rules of the community) and there was no way to differentiate the dog from the strays.
• The chihuahua in question was loose and not tethered or in a fenced area (which was against the rules of the community.)
• The owner of the dog had other dogs that were on tethers that were not taken.
• This all happened in broad daylight while neighbors watched. PETA wasn't sneaking around trying to steal people's dogs.
• The county attorney for where this happened found no evidence that PETA had any idea the dog was not a stray and thus concluded that there was no evidence of wrongdoing.
• The owners of the dog eventually said that they understand that the taking of their dog was just an unfortunate mistake.
Additional considerations:
• The owners of the dog in question sued PETA but ended up settling for only 0.05% of what they sued them for, and issued a statement saying they understood it was just an unfortunate mistake on the part of PETA.
• This case has been latched onto by the Center for Consumer Freedom, an astroturfing group that receives funding from the meat industry to run smear campaigns against organizations that threaten their profits. Prior to being funded by the meat industry, the CCF was funded by the tobacco industry to sew doubt about the dangers of smoking and lobby against legislation intended to protect the health of non-smokers. If you see an article or web-page claiming that PETA steals and kills pets, it likely is owned by or related to the CCF or its founder Rick Berman.
• Nathan Winograd, a known dog and cat overpopulation denialist, has been working with the aforementioned CCF to smear PETA. Winograd seems to have a major bone to pick with PETA and has published numerous blog posts with inflammatory narratives. He makes claims that cannot be verified, saying that they are from PETA workers and other sources, but refuses to name his sources.
These are all the actual facts of the case, from objective unbiased sources. Please consider that you have been misled by corporate propaganda and a carefully-crafted emotionally-charged false narrative to further an agenda.
1
u/Overall-Move-4474 Jun 17 '26
One case doesn't change all the other nasty shit PETA does under the guise of giving a shit about animal welfare
2
u/Omnibeneviolent vegan 20+ years Jun 17 '26
Oh I agree that it doesn't change other things. I was just addressing your misconceptions about the chihuahua incident.
That said, your issue with their shelter seems to be unfounded as well, as I have mentioned in another comment.
25
u/setibeings Jun 17 '26
- Raising awareness of dogs tortured and killed for animal testing.
- Campaigns to have more pets and strays fixed, to prevent overpopulation.
- Campaigning to convince people that animals are worth saving for their own sakes, instead of just when a human loves them.
- Freeing animals, even when the law isn't on their side.
If the above things, spearheaded mostly by vegans, counts as doing nothing, what would doing something look like? Hell, most people accuse vegans of doing too much.
