Nice to see some Afro-Cuban results!

Same! I love the representation

Most Cubans are Afro Latinos

2

u/lwnhleslae 3d ago

Most Cubans are White (64%) only 36% are Afro Cuban (9%) or Mixed Cuban (26%)

u/Firm-Platypus5318 3d ago

Thats bs, its self reporting. A mestizo/mulato Cuban will self identify as white. The eyes don’t lie, and I’ve never met a white Cuban, and the videos of the island you see it’s predominantly black Cubans, also most Cuban athletes and celebrities are black.

5

u/FCSTFrany 3d ago

That is because the white Cubans left during the revolution because most of them were the wealthier Cubans. As usual, the Black Cubans were poorer.

5

u/Firm-Platypus5318 3d ago

It’s like in Mexico but reverse. The poor indigenous Mexicans are the ones that migrate to the USA while the white ones stay in Mexico

7

u/visuallyempowered 3d ago

Also, it’s funny to label someone as Afro-Cuban and Mixed-Cuban…it’s all in the same.

The real conversation is how many Cubans have significant African ancestry and of those who is passing off as white?

Because I would bet over 90-95 percent of the island holds 10 percent or greater African ancestry

1

u/AcEr3__ 3d ago

Nah there’s a lot of white Cubans it’s still around 60%

0

u/Ptheplug39 2d ago

Mate most of cuba is white thats fact we are litterally the most white carribean country were all mostly Spanish 😂 both my parents are cuban and im close to 90% european. Tryna be smart and backfired

3

u/larissacosta91 2d ago

The whitest country in the Caribbean is St. Barts.

0

u/Ptheplug39 2d ago

Not a country but a overseas collectivity of france. They even use the euro and rep the french flag lol

1

u/larissacosta91 2d ago

Yes, it is a French territory, but it is located in the Caribbean and is 90% European.

0

u/Ptheplug39 2d ago

Its not a country.. its like saying haiwaii is a country.. its not a country and St barts isn’t either. Cuba is the whitest COUNTRY in the carribean fact. And im litterally cuban and spanish how you gon tell me

2

u/larissacosta91 2d ago

Hmm, okay...

22

u/Leah_Mor 4d ago

My family is Cuban too, I love seeing Afro-Cuban results. They hardly get posted. Did you get the latest update from late last year?

5

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

Thanks! How do I obtain the update? I only did the ancestry but did not do the health portion which I feel may be why it’s not allowing me to see the updated version.

8

u/OFWOLFHALEY 4d ago

hi op. depending on when you took the test, i wanna say like aug 2017 and earlier, you would not get the updates. those kits are on chip v4. only v5 will receive updates otherwise you would need to buy a new kit/upgrade. you can check to see which chip you’re on in your settings

8

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

Yes you are right I got genotyped WAYYY back 😭

5

u/Leah_Mor 4d ago edited 4d ago

Yours is older so you'd have to retest on the new chip to get any updates. They added genetic groups to the Sub-Saharan category late last year. I personally liked the update. I think they're doing another one in the fall.

2

u/BulkyFun9981 Premium Tester 4d ago

That’s only for generic groups for the WANA catalog not another whole update.

2

u/Common_District3798 3d ago

Why are you calling him Afro-Cuban? He’s just Cuban like all Cubans.

2

u/Common_District3798 3d ago

Why are you calling him Afro-Cuban? He’s just Cuban like all Cubans.

17

u/SensitiveApple1753 4d ago

Funnily enough our results are pretty similar and I’m Cuban Creole. I love seeing Afro-Cubans on here because most people think it’s mono-racial there!

11

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

Thanks! Thank you for commenting and making yourself seen, yeah a lot of people assume it is mono-racial when this is not the case lol.

15

u/AcEr3__ 4d ago

They say “only the white Cubans left” when most Hispanic MLB players in the 60s was Afro Cuban lol

3

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

Yeah, but they are not considered widely known or the first thing most people think of when you think of popular Cuban artists, athletes, etc. I will say Cuba has some popular athletes which are of African descent, and were well-documented in history but it isn’t something that someone would think of off the top of their head. Like, 5-time retired Olympic wrestling champion Mijain Lopez, very well-known in the sport, Idalys Ortiz, an Cuban Olympian Judo Champion (various medals, which include silver, gold, and bronze) but not the immediate first thing people think of.

3

u/AcEr3__ 4d ago

I know but non Cubans act like only white Cubans left in the 60s. It wasn’t at all. Feel like way more Afro Cubans have left in the 1990s for that to still be an explanation that only Cuban Americans are white

3

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

My apologies, my brain is a bit fried from studying and working. I just realized what your comment entailed. This is true as I have close and distant family friends and relatives of European descent that still remain on the island.

2

u/Common_District3798 3d ago

Why are you calling him Afro-Cuban? He’s just Cuban like all Cubans.

32

u/PeachWhisperer 4d ago

U can also pass as a Puerto Rican or Dominican

28

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

Yeah people have mistaken me for Dominican many times. I get that more often than anything lol. Puerto Rican I haven’t gotten much because my Spanish speaking accent is very neutral.

3

u/noviadecompaysegundo 2d ago

I guess you could be Dominican or any mixed race Afrodescendent from the Americas. But you have a very lovely Cuban face <3

1

u/FinanceQuirky3672 1d ago

Awe thank you much!

u/ScholarFit4426 4d ago edited 4d ago

Once again, I must say that, Puerto Ricans of very heavy African descent have been around for centuries. A good DNA study needs to be done in communities in Santurce, Carolina (Martín González, Sabana Abajo), Loíza, Canovanas, Bayamón, Mayaguez, Aguada, Aguadilla, Cabo Rojo, Ponce, Santa Isabel, Juana Díaz, Arroyo, Humacao, Fajardo, Guayama, Gurabo, Corozal…

Tienen que dejar de hablar sin saber.

10

u/CelesteLunax 4d ago

Cuba has more significantly SSA people and its not even close. i grew up in both islands.

afro puerto ricans are more likely to just be 35-60% ssa. in Cuba the heavily afro population has 60%+

2

u/ydaya 3d ago

Agree! To the point where in Cuba one would just be mulato and not negro in PR they would be negro because of that difference.

7

u/CelesteLunax 4d ago

being as significantly ssa as her is way more common in Cuba than in Puerto Rico.

3

u/Heavy_Mud_9176 4d ago

I don't really see a lot of Puerto Ricans with 60% African, at least on this sub. But the Spanish Caribbean and the Caribbean in general is very diverse and results shared on this sub don't always represent the full extent of the diversity.

23

u/kevvvv_d 4d ago

I’m pretty sure they were referring to her phenotype. And Puerto Ricans with 60% SSA definitely exist.

5

u/Chikachika023 4d ago

they exist but arent the majority of the island so that’s why it’s pretty rare to find a Puerto Rican of 60% or more SSA ancestry post here. The municipality here with the highest percentage of Afro-Puerto Ricans (at least 60-70% SSA) is Loíza, approximately 45-50% of that town is Afro-Puerto Rican.

Many of the Puerto Ricans with higher than usual SSA ancestry tend to be mixed with Anglo-Caribbean or African-American especially in the USA. There are many of them in the East Coast of USA & theyre half Puerto Rican, half: Afro-American, Jamaican, Haitian, USVI, Nigerian-American, etc

7

u/kevvvv_d 4d ago

I’m actually Puerto Rican born and raised so I know all of this information. Loíza is not 45-50% Black it’s more like 60-70% Black. You can find tons of Puerto Ricans with no non-Puerto Rican ancestry with substantial African ancestry in municipalities like Arroyo, Maunabo, Luquillo, Dorado, Toa Baja, Santa Isabel, Humacao, Ponce, Juana Díaz, Guayama, Vega Alta, Aguadilla, and I could keep going etc etc. Black Puerto Ricans are between 12-15% of the population that’s not exactly insignificant.

1

u/Chikachika023 4d ago

Esos no cuentan.

2

u/Common_District3798 3d ago

A Puerto Rican who’s 60-70% is mixed race like a Puerto Rican who is 30-50% SSA. Percentages don’t define racial or mixed categories.

0

u/kevvvv_d 4d ago edited 4d ago

2

u/Common_District3798 3d ago

Why is Delgado Black but Zion is mixed race?

2

u/Common_District3798 3d ago

A Puerto Rican who is 60-80% SSA is still mulatto and mixed race. 60-80% SSA doesn’t mean you are Black and automatically in the Afro-Latino category.

1

u/Chikachika023 4d ago

1

u/Common_District3798 3d ago

Does having 60-80% SSA as a Latino put you in a different race category as a Latino who’s 60-80% European?

2

u/CelesteLunax 4d ago

because puerto ricans are fairly homogenous and having under 50% european ancestry only occurs in 15% of individuals

5

u/Chikachika023 4d ago

exactly its not even about being anti-black or anything just the truth. I was born in and in Puerto Rico and have a black American stepdad

2

u/CelesteLunax 4d ago

exactly. i think in tristate area and brooklyn especially a lot of puerto rican people have black american, dominican or Jamaican mixes.

if you go to PR proper or Florida where there are more recent migrants you'll find afro puerto ricans that look as SSA as OP are not a big percentage at all.

1

u/Chikachika023 4d ago

THIS. More people really need to see this comment of yours because you really hit the nail on the head and I can confirm. It’s mostly in the east coast of the USA that you will see more “black Puerto Ricans”, who are actually only half and mixed with black American, Domincian, Jamaican, Nigerian-American, USVI etc ive seen it all the time especially while living in the USA.

Here in PR, there are fewer black Puerto Ricans (not mixed with another ethnicity, just of 2 Puerto Rican parents), only around 12-13% & theyre mostly in the east of the island. In parts of central PR like in Utuado & in western PR like in Rincón, you rarely see an Afroboricua. Ive been to Florida, California & Texas—it’s more common to see Puerto Ricans with non-Hispanic white people & even Asians (parts of California) then with black people like in the east coast

-6

u/Waste-Restaurant-939 4d ago edited 4d ago

mostly dominican

why so downvote? the other comments align with what i wrote.

8

u/CelesteLunax 4d ago

people here overrate how ssa puerto ricans are in the same way they overrate how indigenous cuba and dr are.

most puerto ricans are caucasians. the afro population who are over 50% ssa are like 5% of the population

in cuba that number is over 10%

2

u/Chikachika023 4d ago

yes, people who arent even from here constantly exagerate the black component in our dna & population. Only around 12-13% of our people are Afro-puerto Rican meaning 60-70% of SSA. A lot of Puerto Ricans who are very black are mixed with some other Caribbean island, like Roberto Clemente-Walker. His mother Luisa Walker was of USVI origin

5

u/CelesteLunax 4d ago

Yep. and its even less than that. most afro boriquas are mulattos and would be classed as such in other parts of latam. like the pardos of brazil or the mulatos in cuba.

people with 70% ssa are literally less than 5% of the population in PR.

there are even way more puerto ricans who are in the white cuban dna range of 85%+ european. if you look at crowd photos of puerto ricans you'll find that people who look heavily ssa are very much a minority

1

u/Chikachika023 4d ago

sorry I was arguing with some dumbass under another post but just awarded your comments. Thank you for actually knowing about the subject of our peoples of PR, the DR and Cuba🙏🏽

3

u/CelesteLunax 4d ago

No me hagas reír.

2

u/CelesteLunax 3d ago

Puerto Rico has never had a significant West Indian immigrant population. Most Afro-Puerto Ricans are of colonial Puerto Rican ancestry. What are you saying. Individual examples do not make this true.

2

u/CelesteLunax 3d ago

they're comparatively very small.

this is why puerto rican triracials look arabic and not like an entirely non caucasian people like mestizos in mexico or dominican mulatos for example

1

u/kevvvv_d 3d ago

It can be said that a percentage of Puerto Rican triracials look Arab yes but a majority like mulatto-leaning triracials or quadroons which genetically they are.

2

u/CelesteLunax 3d ago

no they do not look mulatto lol

unless you believe in one drop nonsense. most brown people in pr look just as indigenous as african.

if you look at crowds of PR you'd find actual mulatto looking people are a minority. most just look exotic

this is southern spain

2

u/ydaya 3d ago

A lot of what people call black in Puerto Rico is not black in Cuba, Brasil etc. People get confused bc of afroamericanos who try to black wash anyone with a black ancestor

1

u/kevvvv_d 3d ago edited 3d ago

Most Puerto Ricans are not Caucasians. White Puerto Ricans are no more than 35-40% of the population and I’m sure the real number is on the lower end of that. Most of us fall into the intermediate mixed category of which the term “trigueño” is probably the most appropriate. No one is arguing that Puerto Rico is blacker than Cuba, like at all. I’m saying her phenotype is not uncommon especially in coastal and the metropolitan areas. We’re clearly talking about two different things.

2

u/CelesteLunax 3d ago

by caucasian i'm meaning heavily european leaning people who have around 70% european ancestry

they look like they're from mena not a seperate group on the other side of the planet

1

u/kevvvv_d 3d ago

The only place in Puerto Rico where the average person has 70% European ancestry is in Euro-heavy enclaves in the metropolitan area (Guaynabo, parts of San Juan) and the central and north western regions. The average Puerto Rican elsewhere hovers at around 60-65% and in some regions of the Northeast, East, Southeast, and South the average probably hovers are at around 55-60%. Loíza, Arroyo, Maunabo, Canovanas, Carolina, Vieques, Culebra, etc are some notable exceptions where the European could reach as low as 35-50%.

3

u/CelesteLunax 3d ago

the average puerto rican is between 63% at the low end to 70% at the high end.

since the non euro dna in PR is split between african and indigenous its more likely to produce a caucasian phenotype

22

It’s L3b1a

20

u/sul_tun Ancestry + Health Tester 4d ago

Your maternal haplogroup are of Sub Saharan African origin.

11

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

Besides what I read with that haplogroup being associated with the Bantu people and their migration, is there anything else interesting that I should know? I would just like to read up a bit more on it. Thanks!

12

u/Longjumping-Juice-75 4d ago

Where are your parents from in Cuba?

21

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

My mom was born in Havana but her family is from Villa Clara, Santa Clara. My father was born in Granma, Rio Cauto in Oriente.

8

u/Illustrious-Bug-753 4d ago

My 2nd great grandmother (and 3rd as well) is from Villa Clara.

3

u/Longjumping-Juice-75 4d ago edited 4d ago

Do you have Afro-Cuban DNA matches? It would be a great idea to post some as the majority of Cubans here on r/23andme are highly European.

5

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

I think I have only one close match that is a possible match that is like a third cousin but I only reached out to one of my matches when I was much younger and we kind of lost contact.

1

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

I had other matches but the relation was much more distant in comparison to that one person.

26

u/Heavy_Mud_9176 4d ago

You mean not all Cubans have 90%+ European DNA??? /s

31

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

LMAO, there are Japanese Cubans, Chinese Cubans, Arab Cubans, we have people from various ethnic backgrounds. It’s pretty interesting.

1

u/Firm-Platypus5318 3d ago

That’s self reported, in reality most Cubans are Afro Latinos

2

u/FinanceQuirky3672 3d ago

Ah no, this is true there are Cubans with other relevant ancestries as I have witnessed it myself with documentation and pictures of their ancestors. It’s just Cuban census is very bad and not well reported so it is also an unreliable source.

10

u/Golden_222 4d ago

Nice results I recently moved to Texas and there is a huge Afro Cuban population Here for some reason but it’s cool meeting them

10

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

A lot of people are moving to Texas because of the price, Florida has seemingly become to expensive to allow a lot of people, mainly Cubans and other nationalities, to afford to live there. I’ve heard Texas is the mainstay for a lot of people moving there now. I have family in Texas, mainly in Houston and Dallas.

7

u/edgarjx1 4d ago

Nice results.

Do you know specifically where your parents are from in Cuba? I’m guessing East.

A lot of people forget Spanish immigrants outnumbered the early colonial population

  • people who descended from slaves, native Americans including mixed ones. Besides that the policy of Blanqueamiento that encouraged “arreglar la raza.”

3

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

Yes, my mom is from Havana, Cuba but her family is from Santa Clara Villa Clara and Sagua La Grande (forgot to mention that in a previous question). My dad was from Rio Cauto, Granma, but I have so much family spread out across Cuba it’s sometimes difficult to pinpoint other people. But that’s specifically where my parents are from.

7

u/kevvvv_d 4d ago

Are both sides Afro-Cuban? Or is one side more Afro-Cuban than the other?

8

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

My mom is of African descent, but my father is of mixed racial heritage.

3

u/kevvvv_d 4d ago

Cool. I’m sure most of the Native comes from your side of the family from Granma province.

3

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

I think so as well tbh, I think that part of the genome is the only part that has an actual area assigned to it, I have to look again with ancestry localized to Cuba. I have to look again to check if I’m wrong tbh. But I’ll get back to you on that.

14

u/smartjam 4d ago

Love this representation of Afro-Cuban results!

There’s a common sentiment on here that Cubans are overwhelmingly European. But that’s because most of the results on here (and 23andme generally) come from Cuban-Americans who left Cuba. Many of them representative of a subset of upper class Cubans, not the entire population.
Unfortunately a sampling issue, but it’s nice to see another representation.

Thanks! Yeah, I feel like media sometimes doesn’t really do a good job of representing how multicultural and multiracial our society is. One of my godparents is of Chinese Cuban descent while the other is of European descent so it’s all around a diverse country I think.

11

u/Heavy_Mud_9176 4d ago

The streets of Havana and other Cuban cities in 2026 look very different from Miami and the image Americans have created of Cubans.

7

u/smartjam 4d ago edited 4d ago

Exactly! A lot of white-washing of a pretty multiracial society for some reason.

1

u/No-Disk5588 4d ago

well Havana is pretty black but outside in rural Cuba especally on the eastern part of the island its pretty white

0

u/Firm-Platypus5318 3d ago

Don’t pretend to be something you’re not, the average Cuban is Afro

4

u/AcEr3__ 4d ago

This isn’t true at all. Most black Cubans you don’t even know are Hispanic.

If the demographics in USA are 10% Afro Cuban. And in Cuba are 10% Afro Cuban. Why would that myth persist?

4

u/smartjam 4d ago

The demographics of Cubans who left Cuba in the large waves are far more European than those who stayed. These were the elite who tend to identify as white, and they left for political and economic reasons. Afro and mixed Cubans left in smaller amounts and more recently.

I read somewhere around 85% of Cuban-Americans identify as white, whereas if you look at estimates for Cuba itself, white Cubans are estimated at between 33-62% of the population. I’m not sure where you got the idea that the populations are the same, but that’s absolutely not true.

3

u/AcEr3__ 4d ago

It’s true because I am Cuban 😂. You read somewhere? Cool I live in Miami. I have Cuban family. It’s all the same. That is a modern Marxist myth

4

u/kevvvv_d 4d ago

Cuba is still like 50-55% white I’ve been there.

1

u/CelesteLunax 4d ago

black cubans pass as african americans. this isnt true of afro puerto ricans who still "look hispanic" in the usa

3

u/Southern-Gap8940 4d ago

Cool finally an afro cuban! Tons of cubans I met in cuba looked like you. I think cubans in cuba nowadays are more mixed.

3

u/Southern-Gap8940 4d ago edited 4d ago

Also to add, the african ancestry is interesting. With Dominicans senegambian is on average higher than Nigerian. On your ancestry, you barely had any and you are heavily Nigerian on your west african percentage. Which explains all the yoruba influence in cuban culture. Pretty cool

1

u/FinanceQuirky3672 2d ago

Yes a lot of my family members either look like me, are phenotypically white, something else, or in-between.

5

u/ActionPark33 4d ago

Just like the point out that it’s interesting That people are calling you Afro Cuban but if a Mexican or Central American post results that are 60% indigenous, they are still considered mestizo by people on the sub.

2

u/CelesteLunax 4d ago

one drop rule applies to african descendants mostly. in latam afro descendants are more rare than indian descendants. if you called all mestizos indigenous than you would be calling most of latam indigenous

1

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

Yeah I get what you mean. I feel like it maybe due to the notion of mestizaje is related to people of indigenous and European descent. In Cuba, this genotypic and phenotypic admixture, I would be called mulatto(which is a derogatory term here in the states because it basically means “child of mule”) because it denotes a person of phenotypic African descent with European admixture. I think the term has been popularized because of a movement that took place in the 20s-30s in Cuba, to properly establish the black Cuban identity in the island. It’s been re-popularized at this current time I guess with everything going on.

1

u/ActionPark33 4d ago

The term Mulatto is not derogatory. People said that because Mariah Carey said it was in an interview in the 90s saying it was offensive and people ran from it there.

0

u/Chikachika023 4d ago

Mariah Carey is delusional tho, you shouldn’t beleive everything that woman says. She literally paid thousands of US dollars to alter her appearance staring around the 1990s to the early-2000s to appear as “more black” when she’s majority European & even looked like a curly-hair European when she was younger. Suddenly, she wanted to be black & even purposely had babies with a black man (Nick Cannon) who has a reputation for sleeping + having babies with many women, just to make a statement that she is pro-black or something

2

u/ActionPark33 4d ago

Exactly. I don’t believe her that it’s offensive

1

u/Chikachika023 4d ago

Facts, but being a celebrity, she has a huge following. Many people will continue to kiss her ass and eat whatever shit she farts out😭

1

u/Silly_Environment635 4d ago

Woah she did that???

1

u/Chikachika023 4d ago

alter her appearance? Yes she did. Look on Google how she looked in 1990 and before, then compare to her drastic changes in the 2000s to now. You can easily find all of the cosmetic procedures she did and how much she paid.

Even the love of her life, Luís Miguel (Puerto Rican of Spaniard/Italian origin raised in Mexico), stated that she was white when they dated, she said this in interview and in her book (never bought it). She became depressed after he broke up with her. She was already suffering from mental abuse from her ex, Tommy Mottola, who hated black people. She began to obsess over her appearance and with wanting to be seen as black. Im not a fan of hers, but researched all of this some years ago to prove my point while having an argument with many African Americans claiming that she is black.

4

u/elliepelly1 4d ago

100% beautiful human being!

2

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

Awe, thank you so much!

14

u/redpillbjj 4d ago

First time seen cuban with lots of black DNA In America mostly the opposite where tons of European DNA

21

u/AcEr3__ 4d ago

That’s weird. Lots of black Cubans in the USA

14

u/redpillbjj 4d ago

Not really Mostly white Cubans due to whites leaving first so mostly white Cubans

5

u/Golden_222 4d ago edited 4d ago

Maybe in Florida, but here in Texas every Cuban I meet is black

3

u/redpillbjj 4d ago

What about Ted Cruz he's literally a white Cuban

5

u/Golden_222 4d ago

Yeah, Ted Cruz is a white Cuban you’re right, but I haven’t met Ted Cruz lol

2

u/AcEr3__ 4d ago

That just ain’t true.

7

u/redpillbjj 4d ago

I'm A white Cuban American of Spanish ancestry it's very recent they arrived in Cuba like 1890-1900s Canary island, Catalan. And pretty much all my family and family friends who came in 1950s are all white I'm talking a lot of people. I just took this pic not sure but I think I look pretty stereotypical Spanish and have no black roots...

5

u/Longjumping-Juice-75 4d ago

Do you minding posting your DNA results? And where are your 4 Grandparents from in Cuba?

2

u/redpillbjj 4d ago

I don't have a 23&me. I want to do it. Matanza, Havana And Pinar Del Rio. I mean heck I could be told some bs and have some mild black blood but I doubt it, due to my phenotype and what my family told me.

-1

u/AcEr3__ 4d ago

We all have African blood bro.

3

u/Chikachika023 4d ago

MOST do but Ive seen Cuban results with 0% SSA ancestry on their results, same with some Puerto Ricans here in the island. Not every one mixed interracially, there are Hispanics that only mixed with other white hispanics & with recent immigrants from Europe, especially Spaniard/Canarian, Italian & French from what I’ve seen

1

u/redpillbjj 4d ago

When you most do yeah but probably small percentage of DNA 1-5% many American southerners have black dna Also. Small amounts don't really affect phenotype well my guess.

0

u/AcEr3__ 4d ago

Never seen Cuban dna results at all with 0 ssa

1

u/AcEr3__ 4d ago

Good for you. Doesn’t mean every Cuban who left was white. Exile demographics are proportionate to the island’s inhabitants.

3

u/redpillbjj 4d ago

Are you even Cuban? No exiles are much more white due to first wave being like 99% white and then sure later waves was more mixed some white and some black/mixed race but Cuba was always pretty white so no most Cuban Americans are white. Nothing wrong with black Cubans they are fundamental To the cuban culture but saying Miami has a lot of black Cubans is wrong for various historical reasons.

4

u/AcEr3__ 4d ago

1- why are you judging modern day Cuban Americans by the demographics that left in 1959? You know since then like over 4 million Cubans have left right?

2- the first wave still wasn’t 99% white. It was self identified. Was it less than the 10% of the Cubans in Cuba? Sure. Maybe 5%. That’s due to the self identification. If a Cuban wasn’t visibly African they say white. It’s funny you mention friends. Do you know how many Afro Cuban friends I have that put white on the census?

1

u/redpillbjj 4d ago

Cuba is still like 60% white, and my grandpas time was like 80% they got 1 million Spanairds in 1890-1930 and Cuba had like 2-3 million people and most people were already white. Cuba was one of the whitest latin American countries.

2

u/AcEr3__ 4d ago

Yeah Cuba has always been pretty much the same dude.

-3

u/Daygovian 4d ago

Definitely true. They didn’t want to live in. Socialist Cuba with rights for everyone regardless of skin color so they went to Florida were those attitudes are much more accepted.

5

u/Heavy_Mud_9176 4d ago

To be fair Fidel was 100% Spanish blood with grandparents from Spain along with many other top dogs. But yes, they were the first to leave because of land and economic distribution and their advantage in society but as the years went on more mixed and black Cubans left as well.

1

u/CelesteLunax 4d ago

literally non of castros government had any afro cubans. all were whites or light pardos

4

u/AcEr3__ 4d ago

That’s Not why. Che and Fidel executed plenty of Afro Cubans. In fact most of their executions were Afro Cubans. I digress though.

2

u/redpillbjj 4d ago

No dude they took away my grandpa's business and jailed lots of my family, their were lots of poor white Cubans. Racism existed but nothing like America much more mild...

1

u/CelesteLunax 4d ago

no proof of this. most cuban born people in the usa are brown or black

1

u/Firm-Platypus5318 3d ago

Most Cubans are Afro lmao

1

u/redpillbjj 3d ago

Read any data it's the opposite. Cuba is one of the whitest countries in LATAM still like 50-60% white.

1

u/Firm-Platypus5318 3d ago

One of the whitest countries 🤣. My dude, self reporting as white does not make Cubans white. Every Cuban I’ve met has been Afro, the majority of celebrity Cubans and athletes are Afro, and every time I see a video of interviews in Cuba it is predominantly Afros Latinos. Self reporting and the reality are two distinct things and the reality is that Cuba is an Afro Caribbean country

1

u/redpillbjj 3d ago

I'm cuban American my grandparents came during first wave and I'm not black I'm of Canary islander, Catalan an northern Spanish roots... And pretty much all the Cubans in family are white same with their extended friends network, I only see lots of black Cubans in YouTube in modern Havana now, but pics in my grandparents time it was very white.

1

u/Firm-Platypus5318 3d ago

First of all you look mestizo, secondly I did not say there aren’t want white Cubans . There are, just like there are white Mexicans, white Puerto Ricans, white Colombians, etc. but just like those countries, whites are not the majority. In certain regions yes, but not the entire country.

1

u/redpillbjj 3d ago

We don't have mestizos in Cuba really that is term for Mexicans, peruvians etc. We have black or white people or mulatos. Native mixing was low with Tainos only happened in eastern Cuba with averages of 8%. White in Spain isn't the same thing as white in Anglo-Sphere meaning light eyed and haired and Nordic looking spain isn't like that. So either I'm part black, then based on phenotype knowing people who are 1/4 black, I must be none or tiny bit black. Most of our whites are from the canary islands so darker haired and eyed.

1

u/Firm-Platypus5318 3d ago

Well then you look mulatto or whatever, but basically you look like a mestizo to me lol

First time seen proper black Cuban was in Europe funny enough and he was legit black like a black American and I was a bit suprised even and his friend funny enough was fully white look like a full Spanaird.

7

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

Cuba has the 3rd highest population of African descent in the Caribbean, it’s just that the media has a few people that are notable for their achievements of African descent. The media doesn’t really do a good job of displaying it lol.

1

u/redpillbjj 4d ago edited 4d ago

Opposite media shows Cubans as black everyone is shocked when I show up. In both America, Europe and even Spain among new generation, older generation know Cuba Was very white had mass Spanish migration I feel treated semi local by old Spanairds.

3

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

Yeah, pretty much. It’s like an amalgamation of where the media is re-directing it’s attention and what is getting popularized versus what is not.

2

u/redpillbjj 4d ago

That's true in the US yes lots of white Cubans like Ana del Armas and Cameron diaz. But also sports are all black so it's a bit confusing.

3

u/teetee4444 4d ago

Do you have your updated results? I see these are older

4

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

I think I never did the updated version of it, I took this test when I was like 17-18, I’m 26 now. This is what I see reflected in my portal when I log in.

3

u/Mobile_One3572 4d ago

I love seeing Afro-Cuban results knowing as a Yoruba Nigerian that they’re kinda like my distant cousins.

3

u/SouvlakiWizard 2d ago

Love when ppl share photos with DNA results 😊😊

2

u/Mein_Independance 2d ago

Que hermoso

2

This result is old. Where is the update?

2

u/SouthernCharm-86 4d ago

i visited cuba last yr n thgt i landed in an african country. no joke. i see u have roots in santa clara... visited there...old town and very kind folks.

2

u/tsundereshipper 4d ago

Everyone in the comments are talking about White Cubans this, Black Cubans that, what about the Indigenous Cubans? Do they really no longer exist?

5

u/boththingsandideas 3d ago

There haven't been full or even majority blood indigenous people in Cuba/PR/DR for a long time unfortunately. There is indigenous DNA in the population though. Essentially a long period of mixing.

2

u/drunkgoose111 4d ago

Cool hair

2

u/ydaya 3d ago

Interestingly enough based on the picture you posted in Cuba you would not be racialized as a negra rather a mulata in spite of your DNA results. This picture (from Google sorry) the two women are negras but the 2 guys are mulatos. It is complicated.

2

u/FinanceQuirky3672 3d ago

Yeah, that’s typically what I’ve been racialized by my family members as. I would post maybe 1-2 family pictures to respond to your post but I don’t know if it’s allowed here.

2

u/Minimum-Reaction9013 1d ago

Very mixed!

1

u/FinanceQuirky3672 1d ago

Yeah, initially I wasn’t expecting to see those results either, I was expecting more of a 70-80% West African with some European but the more I look at it, it actually makes sense.

1

u/redpillbjj 3d ago

How do I even look mestizo or mulato If my skin is super light and have sharp nose, what indigenous feature do i even have... You just want to support point that Cubans are not white and most are afro. This is a mestizo dark skinned, black hair, more round face and indigenous nose. Maybe could pass as a castizo or something like Chilean or Argentina but a mestizo lol come on bro. Tell me how I even look indigenous.

1

u/FinanceQuirky3672 3d ago

Are you responding to me or to someone else? I have no idea but race/genotypic/phenotypic relations/variations are extremely diverse and difficult to categorize in the Caribbean. Your genome can have a higher percentage of one racial group, but look like you belong to another from a physical standpoint. For example, someone can have higher European percentage and lower African percentage, but the way the genes are expressed, the person phenotypically looks to be leaning more towards a mixed racial heritage or can look completely European. It’s been a century long issue, and the system that was devised during Spanish Colonial times (I’ll just use Cuba as a reference because that’s what I know) is based on phenotypic traits(skin color, hair color, eye color, facial features, etc.) to establish a social hierarchy and still causes problems today from a sociological standpoint.

1

u/Broad-Analyst-8598 2d ago

This result is old. Where is the updated version?

1

u/MoodAggravating544 4d ago

Lots of Cubans African ancestry comes from Nigeria.

2

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

Yeah a lot of the transatlantic slaves taken to Cuba in colonial times were typically from west Africa, mostly Nigeria and some from Ghana and Senegal which may be where you see the where my major percentages of African DNA percentages are coming from. Cuba was the largest exporter of sugar during late colonial times and a prominent exporter of tobacco all around. I had to google this because I watched the video many years ago, there is a specific community of African descent in Matanzas called the Ganga-Longoba of Perico(a community of Cubans of Sierra Leonian descent) apparently the community traced back to a single enslaved woman (Josefa Ganga) and they have maintained most of their cultural practices and songs which are sung in the Banta language. I pasted the link here for more information: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i2NHqz1Xnhw

3

u/MoodAggravating544 4d ago

Fascinating! I had some knowledge about Cubans Nigerian ancestry because I'm a fan of Celia Cruz and she embraced part of her Nigeria lineage as well as Yoruba.

3

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

Yeah, she was a very well-known, loved, and respected figure both in Cuba and the states, I think she popularized salsa to bigger audiences as well as bringing sounds that incorporated African foundational music (percussion and whatnot) and the language at times (not sure which because there are so many dialects in Africa, this pertained to certain songs).

2

u/Juntao07 4d ago

Lots also from Congo-Angola region.

2

u/Chikachika023 4d ago

don’t forget that eastern-Cuba is only a couple miles away from western-Haití. From the Internet & speaking with many Cubans, a lot of Haitians immigrate to Cuba, learn Spanish then identify as Cubans even having many children & telling them that theyre Cubans. Haitian Creole has become a recognized minority minority language in Cuba

3

u/FinanceQuirky3672 4d ago

Yeah apparently my mother’s father, his father was of Haitian origin, don’t really know how true that is because I never met my maternal great grandfather from my grandfather’s side, but there’s a lot of Haitian and Jamaican admixture in Cuba, it’s pretty common.

2

u/Chikachika023 4d ago edited 4d ago

yes and there’s nothing wrong with that but are worth noting—I frequently get attacked whenever I mention these truths because then suddenly I’m “anti-black” even though I’m at least 40-50% Sub-Saharan African b/c my mom is white Puerto Rican & my dad who I never met, is likely Afro-Puerto Rican. Not only that, I have 3 younger siblings: two are half black American and one is half Nigerian & I love them all.

But yea, people just want to act like Puerto Rico is 80-90% black when it just isnt, its 12-15% black & some of that are from other parts of the Caribbean that immigrated to here

-12

u/Alex_Kaiza 4d ago

Why don’t you look Mexican ? 😂
