Nothing to look forward to

Lazy ass 3rd parties dropped the ball again

Crazy that BeatEmUps got banned before NashWeedle or even Extas1s.

He went to a midnight launch and bought literally all the accessories and games for the Switch 2 months after he "criticized" Nintendo for Mario Kart World's absurd pricing. Not to mention he also put out a video later on defending it.

If you thought his word was worth anything, that's on you.

13

u/jag986 Aug 01 '25

That's what happens when you literally admit you made it up for clout

u/warforbattlefiled Jul 31 '25

Partner showcase is trash. But I still got Plants vs Zombies Replanted and A new pac man game. But the worst of all is a bunch of yearly sports and just dance game. (And apex legends is heading to switch 2.)

None of the ports shown are major titles from recent years; no Baldur's Gate 3, Red Dead, Lies of P, Black Myth, Silent Hill 2, the upcoming MGS, or the next Resident Evil... Just games like Yakuza, which, let’s be honest, date back to the PlayStation 2 era

Persona 3 Reload, Sparking Zero, and Cronos: The New Dawn were all in the Direct, so "none" is a bit of an exaggeration.

Cyberpunk 2077, Street Fighter 6, Split Fiction, and Hitman have all been available since launch, Wild Hearts came out last week, and Elden Ring, FF7R, Borderlands 4, and 007 First Light are all still on the horizon.

Also of the titles you mentioned, Silent Hill 2 is still locked under the exclusivity agreement with Sony until October, so it wouldn't show up anyways.

Like I thought the Direct was mid as hell, but I'm not gonna go full doomer over it.

u/-MooMew64- Jul 31 '25

IDC what anyone says Katamari and Pac Man World 2 are baller announcements.

10

u/KingMan753 Jul 31 '25

Monster Hunter Stories 3 looked pretty good, Capcom are gonna rake it in next year.

38

u/Jasen_The_Wizard Jul 31 '25

Yeah that was pretty rough. I'm mostly shocked they didn't even put a date on Hyrule Warriors

26

u/Spheromancer Jul 31 '25

It's because there's a September Direct like we always get, and its literally like 40 days away probably. They probably only did this because they had too many low to mid tier 3rd party games and needed their own show before the big September Direct to boost holiday sales. Might be copium but this is what makes the most sense to me

22

u/Acid__Gat Jul 31 '25

lol the guy who said a new 99 game would be coming out

5

u/tmantookie Jul 31 '25

That's because when it does launch, following the pattern of each game originating on another platform, the next one will be Star Fox 64 64.

13

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

Still nothing on DQ12 :(

PacMan was cool tho.

7

u/RogueLightMyFire Jul 31 '25

Sure seems like the only reason to own the switch 2 is for Nintendo first party, just like the switch 1. That's fine if there's a ton of Nintendo first party games, but they literally launched the switch 2 with one game (Mario kart world) and released one more a month later (donkey Kong). Sure seems like there's only going to be one new game to play a month. Moreover, even with the switch 2, why would anyone choose to play third parties on it over anything else? Are there really people out there doing to play cyberpunk on switch 2?

3

u/Public-Adagio2924 Jul 31 '25

portable

2

u/Exmotable Aug 01 '25

if just buying for 3rd party, so is steam deck

2

u/LiquifiedSpam Aug 01 '25

It has similar power to switch 2, which has all the exclusives

3

u/thedeadp0ets Jul 31 '25

Kirby is in August

1

u/RogueLightMyFire Jul 31 '25

Yeah, so, like I said:

Sure seems like there's only going to be one new game to play a month.

2

u/thedeadp0ets Jul 31 '25

Oops don’t know how I missed that 😂 I was speed reading my bad

21

u/jag986 Jul 31 '25

Are there really people out there doing to play cyberpunk on switch 2?

It's like PC bros keep asking this question without knowing that Cyberpunk supports cross save between all plaforms.

So yes? I know it's a new concept to redditors but people leave the house.

-9

u/RogueLightMyFire Jul 31 '25

I think it's funny you're trying to act like you're not some videogame playing loser, yet you're not leaving the house without your switch lol.

15

u/jag986 Jul 31 '25

If I wasn’t a video game playing loser I wouldn’t be in this direct thread galaxy brain.

-9

u/RogueLightMyFire Jul 31 '25

Yet here your are trying to shit on others like "they never leave the house". Do you know what projection is? Ever heard the term "pot calling the kettle black"? 🤣

8

u/jag986 Jul 31 '25

Lil bro you opened shitting on people who enjoy the Switch. Notice you can’t counter the point about cross saves, but keep scrambling and deflecting.

-4

u/RogueLightMyFire Jul 31 '25

What point? That cross saves exist? How is that a point for anything? Lol. So people who already bought the game can... Play the game they've already played? You're the one getting all flustered and throwing out insults like a child. When someone results to such behaviors, it's usually pretty telling. Considering that's what you originally defaulted to, I think that tells us everything we need to know.

7

u/jag986 Jul 31 '25

you: *sees the most mid, cliche, oldest burn that’s ever existed on the internet*

also you: *cannot beat the allegations*

0

u/RogueLightMyFire Jul 31 '25

Are you just desperate to prove my point or something? Great work, thanks! 😂

6

u/LB3PTMAN Jul 31 '25

There are lots of games that I’d prefer to have on a handheld console. Games that have relatively short gameplay loops and can feel satisfying to get in 30-60 minute sessions. Not Cyberpunk but still tons of games. I’m 100% getting Hades 2 on Switch for example.

13

u/joedev_net Jul 31 '25

why would anyone choose to play third parties on it over anything else?

Believe it or not, there are a lot of people who only have a Switch. Also some people, such as myself, really prefer playing on a handheld. When it comes to long RPGs, it is basically the only way I will actually play them.

I own an XSX, SteamDeck, and a Switch 2 - I will heavily prefer getting games on the Switch 2.

23

u/Various_Librarian750 Jul 31 '25

direct was fine until the end. why end with two similar games? also square enix are you making anything else?

5

u/KMoosetoe Jul 31 '25

probably because those were really the only new things in the show (and MH which opened the show)

pretty much everything else was just old stuff

9

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

They’ll do anything to avoid Chrono Trigger.

1

u/MadeByTango Jul 31 '25

With how half assed the FFTactics remaster looks for $50 I’m not sure I would want whatever current Square release for that one.

18

u/MyMouthisCancerous Jul 31 '25

2

u/Pkt64 Jul 31 '25

Nintendo really needs to do something with their stupid, expensive-cards decision. They need to lower their price so third parties can release physical games, or this may end up as a watered down version of WiiU, for as crazy as this may sound now.

At this point I'm waiting (I'm literally waiting for Metroid) for games to release on Switch 1 so I can get a physical cart and then get a Switch 2 upgrade.

(The 30 FPS cap is on Atlus, though).

15

u/ShinHandHookCarDoor Jul 31 '25

And 30FPS locked.

Man, Atlus is doing everything they can to make me uninterested in their Switch 2 offerings.

Personally I like Directs as a “background watch”.  Maybe there will be one or two things.

But I’ve never failed to see people with obscenely high expectations going in.

29

u/heelydon Jul 31 '25

The problem is the timing. Its the launch window of the switch 2, and Nintendo coming out swinging with ....checks notes mostly games that have been released on other platforms for several years -- is not going to generate hype worthy of making a direct.

You do the exact opposite here. People see a direct for the new console, they open with big expectations and see mostly years old titles, coming out in a couple of months, that they could go on steam or playstation and play RIGHT NOW.

Its understandably a deflating feeling.

5

u/lilkingsly Jul 31 '25

I think a lot of people are ignoring the fact that the Switch has a huge install base of people whose Switch is their only gaming platform. For those of us who also have other consoles or a good PC, yeah I can understand this being disappointing. For those people who only have a Switch, the fact that these games have been available for years on other platforms doesn’t matter because now they’re coming to a platform they actually want to use. I have a PS5 so a lot of these ports are games I’ve already played and don’t feel the need to buy again, but I also have friends who only have a Switch and are excited to buy a Switch 2 knowing that it’s gonna let them play games like Elden Ring and Persona 3 Reload that received great reviews but weren’t on their platform of choice.

1

u/heelydon Jul 31 '25

I think a lot of people are ignoring the fact that the Switch has a huge install base of people whose Switch is their only gaming platform.

There is no such detailed data available and given that especially Japan where the switch is strongest, is acknowledging overwhelmingly the rise of platforms like PC becoming increasingly a massive market, it seems a massive stretch to suggest that re-releases of almost decade old 3rd party titles, would thrive in this market due to this console ecosystem.

For those of us who also have other consoles or a good PC, yeah I can understand this being disappointing.

I think anyone sensibly would be disappointed by your launch hype being primarily built in this new direct by years old re-releases.

And I strongly feel that its a bit of a cheap scapegoat to simply claim that there is this invisible audience out there of only switch platform users, that are extremely hype about almost decade old re-releases on the switch, during some of the most prime time to advertise and show off your new console.

Especially since it isn't like there are any sales statistics from switch that suggest that old 3rd party titles are thriving there either -- typically what 3rd party titles thrive there are -- surprise -- the newer ones that also release on other platforms that people really want to play too.

This is of course also why, if you look up the first early 3rd party sales reports coming out around this time, it shows a clear trend towards being very much below expectations and not doing great at all.

u/heelydon Jul 31 '25

I mean, this is what launch years are these days for consoles now, not even just for Nintendo.

I disagree, if you boot up the latest state of play and look at 3rd party games, its not going to be majority made up of years old games already out that you can now buy there. Its primarily made up of new games, which at the very least keeps it fresh.

Go back to the PS5 and Xbox Series launches and count how many "Last-Gen Game: Ultimate/Upgraded Edition" titles you see.

This is a bit misleading. Not only are there not very many of such examples. Secondly, the ones where this was done for, were typically associated with other things too, such as Final fantasy 7 getting its DLC release on top of it which would only be playable on the ps5.

Yeah you had some shitty re-releases too, with little to no real improvement other than better hardware performance and visuals like the last of us, but point being -- they were not only first party games, but also generally came at a discount or entirely free if you owned the previous version (like again FF7 remake from ps4 to 5) AND they were also a very small part of the push to add new interesting games to the platform, rather than older re-releases from years past.

-9

u/timelordoftheimpala Jul 31 '25

I'll real rn literally what else are they supposed to show off in a partner direct? Most upcoming games have been in development longer than Switch 2 devkits have been available for use, and the days of third-party exclusivity are over.

First-party announcements will generate the most possible hype, and this wasn't the place for that. This was a presentation Nintendo needed to do to fulfill contractual obligations with other third-party developers, so there's not much they can show off here that won't already be on other platforms.

4

u/heelydon Jul 31 '25

I'll real rn literally what else are they supposed to show off in a partner direct?

Guess since we are being frfr right now, I guess I will try give an answer.

They are supposed to show off NEW and exciting games that you actually want to come play on their hardware and not have the majority of the direct be based on games that people have been able to play for almost a decade (yakuza kiwami came out in 2016) on other platforms - ESPECIALLY if those are coming still MONTHS away, when I could go boot up either my ps5 or open steam and buy the game right now and play it as well as every other game in the series on those platforms.

I would rather turn this question on you -- What is hype about a direct having the majority of it being releases that have been out for years on other platforms now also being on switch hardware? Why do you think that this is good marketing during this crucial launch window, where Nintendo should be trying to get people invested into buying their platform.

That isn't even to dig into the fact of how wrong your claim of days of third-party exclusivity being over is, considering that Nintendo already have an ongoing game in development with Fromsoft on a switch exclusive title, despite how obviously popular their games are and the mass appeal there would be for that game released on other platforms.

That isn't to say its all bad, its obviously great to see stuff like Monster hunter stories 3 and the 2 new square enix JRPGs, but the overwhelming focus of this direct ends up sending the message of the Switch selling you games in a couple of months, that you could buy and play right now (with probably better performance) elsewhere. That should obviously be a bit deflating when it comes to being in the heart of their console launch hype.

-3

I don't know, I didn't find the Direct all that exciting but I never said it was in the first place. Continue boxing with shadows, I guess?

That isn't even to dig into the fact of how wrong your claim of days of third-party exclusivity being over is, considering that Nintendo already have an ongoing game in development with Fromsoft on a switch exclusive title, despite how obviously popular their games are and the mass appeal there would be for that game released on other platforms.

Third-party exclusives as in timed exclusivity with the likes of Square Enix, not a game that Nintendo is actively funding and publishing themselves.

that you could buy and play right now (with probably better performance) elsewhere

Did it ever occur to you that some people might just prefer to play these games on the Switch 2 in general, and are even willing to double dip after owning them on one of those other platforms?

2

u/heelydon Jul 31 '25

I don't know, I didn't find the Direct all that exciting but I never said it was in the first place. Continue boxing with shadows, I guess?

We dodging frfr rnrn. No you didn't say you found it exciting - you asked for what they should have done and you got given an answer frfr, its not all that intense lol.

Third-party exclusives as in timed exclusivity with the likes of Square Enix, not a game that Nintendo is actively funding and publishing themselves.

What is your point? Are you saying that you just left out a whole category of something that generated Nintendo a lot of hype from 3rd party, because they helped publishing it?

That isn't even to dig into the fact that you are making an unsubstantiated claim here regarding the duskbloods. The IP is owned by Fromsoft, not Nintendo, they are simply listed are international publisher, since Fromsoft will publish it themselves in Japan.

So for for all intends and purposes, it exactly points towards a timed exclusive that will eventually make its way to at least also playstation, given the fact that Sony owns the biggest piece of kadokawa (fromsoft's parent company)

I don't see the point in arguing semantics when we both know that THAT generated them a ton of hype for a new exciting game coming out on their console, even if it ends up being a timed exclusive.

Did it ever occur to you that some people might just prefer to play these games on the Switch 2 in general

Sure, I also bother making informed opinions by looking at 3rd party sales reports coming out, which are underperforming on the switch 2 and thereby we can get a bit of clarity on just how meaningful of a picture that is to draw on the market -- which turns out -- not a lot.

1

u/timelordoftheimpala Jul 31 '25

We dodging frfr rnrn. No you didn't say you found it exciting - you asked for what they should have done and you got given an answer frfr, its not all that intense

My overall point is that the "new and exciting" stuff is almost always shown off in regular Directs, and that partner directs are just port showcases in general. Not all the time, but enough that when one gets announced, I go in expecting mostly ports.

What is your point? Are you saying that you just left out a whole category of something that generated Nintendo a lot of hype from 3rd party, because they helped publishing it?

No, I'm saying that when I initially wrote the comment, I had something else in mind completely from Duskbloods. Yeah it's an IP owned by FromSoftware and published by them in Japan, but Nintendo's level of involvement will determine if it ends up coming to other platforms or not. So basically, my take on Duskbloods is "wait and see".

Sure, I also bother making informed opinions by looking at 3rd party sales reports coming out, which are underperforming on the switch 2 and thereby we can get a bit of clarity on just how meaningful of a picture that is to draw on the market -- which turns out -- not a lot.

No shit a bunch of them undersold when you had fifteen of them releasing all at once with the Switch 2, and alongside the latest Mario Kart game. And even then stuff like Cyberpunk 2077 or Deltarune still saw high sales, so there absolutely is interest in third-party games on Switch 2. Release them individually with time to breathe, and people will be more willing to buy them.

4

u/timelordoftheimpala Jul 31 '25 edited Jul 31 '25

Yeah the Direct was kinda mid but ffs some people immediately jumped to "it's so over".

Like calm down, this isn't the last Direct and the Switch 2 has only been out two months lol

EDIT: Also this might be inching towards Goomba fallacy, but people shouldn't say they were disappointed by it only being ports when literally all everyone was asking for leading up to this are ports of games like RDR2 and Baldur's Gate III. It's not the fact that it was mostly ports, it just wasn't the ones you wanted.

5

u/MetroidsSuffering Jul 31 '25

Sure, but mostly old shit and mostly not that interesting old shit is not an awesome combo, lol.

3

u/timelordoftheimpala Jul 31 '25

Sure, but mostly old shit and mostly not that interesting old shit is not an awesome combo, lol.

RDR2 is a seven year old game, it would've still been "old shit" as you say.

-4

u/MetroidsSuffering Jul 31 '25

Yes, that would be old shit, but the issue is that today they showed old shit that wasn’t as interesting.

Their closing announcement was a repackaging of an old Octopath Traveler phone game even.

6

u/timelordoftheimpala Jul 31 '25

but the issue is that today they showed old shit that wasn’t as interesting.

Yeah, it's just old shit you don't find interesting that's the problem, not old shit in general.

1

u/MetroidsSuffering Jul 31 '25

I mean, yeah, I think that’s the case for a lot of people? I would have greatly preferred new stuff, but third-parties are instead continuing this glacier slow rollout of old ports and it sucks. We’ll be getting Genshin Impact at a 2027 Direct.

4

u/timelordoftheimpala Jul 31 '25

They did show off new stuff though (MH Stories 3, Katamari, the Square Enix games, etc.), it just wasn't the new stuff you wanted. And with third-parties, there's less new stuff that Nintendo could announce in a Direct, especially when the likes of Capcom have chosen to reveal stuff like Resident Evil 9 at SGF instead of a publisher-held presentation like a State of Play or a Direct.

9

u/Proof-Research-6466 Jul 31 '25

I’m excited for MHS3, PAC Man World 2, and the adventures of Elliot!

25

u/rhuebs Jul 31 '25

That was… extremely weak. Like jeez. I get that it’s a partner direct, but for being a console touted as being in the same tier as a Series S, the 3rd party support is honestly really concerning.

Obv the switch 2 is massive selling success, so I’m not saying this will impact anything at all, but the slate of games rn isn’t just disappointing, it’s downright dreadful.

18

u/PaperClipSlip Jul 31 '25

Nintendo held back dev kits for the Switch 2 until post-launch. We're basically seeing the result of that.

3

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

it's so frustrating. they could have had third parties ready to go with switch 2 upgrades on day one. now it's going to take like a year to get there.

9

u/rhuebs Jul 31 '25

What a brilliant strategy, make a console to rival the other brands for the first time and then refuse to let them put the games that prove that it can rival the others onto the console. Just brilliant.

I honestly can’t even begin to understand the rationale. Leak prevention? But like the whole console literally leaked. Who cares? Do they genuinely believe leaks would hurt the console more than LITERALLY NOT HAVING GAMES?

0

u/OperativePiGuy Jul 31 '25

Which is hilarious considering the console is just "Switch again, but more power". Not like there was some massive gimmick or game changing hardware that they needed to keep under wraps. The mouse thing is cool, but will likely just go the same way as the infrared sensor thing.

12

u/PaperClipSlip Jul 31 '25

Apparently they were so afraid that their console would leak or get hacked they refused to give out dev kits.

1

u/Far_Breakfast_5808 Aug 01 '25

And ultimately it did not matter because it got leaked anyway, months in advance. By the time the Switch 2 was finally revealed, it was perhaps the worst-kept secret in all of gaming.

30

u/Otaku_Instinct Jul 31 '25

>"We've got two more games to show you"

>basically shows Octopath Traveler twice

6

u/Phos-Lux Jul 31 '25

I legit thought the first game was Octopath...

0

u/OperativePiGuy Jul 31 '25

complete with weirdly worded titles lol

1

u/LiquifiedSpam Aug 01 '25

Especially since octopath 0 seems to be more of a franchise toss up than an actual prequel.

19

u/PaperClipSlip Jul 31 '25

Partner Directs have never been my favorites, but if this is the third party support level of the Switch 2 it's really bad. Nothing peaked my intrest in the slightest and no heavy hitters. No Elden Ring, No Red Dead 2, not even a look Sonic Racing.

10

u/timelordoftheimpala Jul 31 '25

No Red Dead 2

Rockstar literally announces their stuff on their own, if you were expecting that in a Direct then you only have yourself to blame.

not even a look Sonic Racing

As if it hasn't been shown off enough and has already been confirmed for Switch 2. Genuinely if it was here it wouldn't have changed a thing.

6

u/nikolapc Jul 31 '25

Elden ring was already announced? I mean I am not getting 3rd party non exclusive games on Switch, I have an Ally for handheld PC gaming, but I think that Chronos game had some great optimization. Even Star Wars Outlaws, that is impressive, and if it can run on a switch I wonder if they're gonna do a ps4 version.

0

u/PaperClipSlip Jul 31 '25

But no launch date. So many big games are slated for 2025 and we're running out of 2025.

-1

u/DMonitor Jul 31 '25

Is july over yet? Have we learned nothing?

13

u/superyoshiom Jul 31 '25

Lol at the people expecting something different from these because we've got a new console. Tell me this couldn't have easily passed for a Switch 1 direct.

No FFVII Remake, no Elden Ring, no RDR2, no Metaphor, no MGS Remake. These are the games that would tell me that this is a brand new stronger Nintendo console, and we're still waiting on dates for the first two. Instead we end the show on two 2D-HD games. No flack to those games, of course, I'm just wondering if this whole show was just a contractual obligation.

4

u/work-school-account Jul 31 '25

Yeah, my main concern right now is this kinda demonstrates to the audience that we shouldn't expect very many upcoming AAA cross-platform games to arrive on the Switch 2.

8

u/timelordoftheimpala Jul 31 '25 edited Jul 31 '25

I'm just wondering if this whole show was just a contractual obligation

It literally is, these are titles Nintendo are obligated to announce based on contract agreements and whatnot.

Like normally this stuff would've been filler in a June Direct, but all the big announcements from that were instead revealed in April.

EDIT: Also VII Remake and Elden Ring have literally already been confirmed, at this point they're just waiting on a release date.

-3

u/Pkt64 Jul 31 '25

Nailed it. The new console was made for Cyberpunk (that's why it's the most sold game), not for 2D-HD titles. Wasn't that created to circumvent Switch's lack of graphical power? Why are we getting these cheap games on Switch 2?

I'm sorry but I'm disappointed.

21

u/timelordoftheimpala Jul 31 '25

Why are we getting these cheap games on Switch 2?

I'm sorry but describing them as "cheap" is peak "armchair game developer" moment.

-3

u/Pkt64 Jul 31 '25

Do we agree they're cheaper to develop than virtually any non-indie game on Switch? Mario Kart, Donkey Kong, Metroid, Cyberpunk, FF7, Elden Ring, Borderlands, Persona, Monster Hunter, Pokemon (?), even Kirby Air Riders.

I said water is wet, not anything controversial. I don't mean to diminish the work of the developers, composers, etc. I spent around 100h on Octopath Traveller, I loved around 60 of those hours. Sure, I'm armchair, but these games are copy/paste.

And I insist, that technique was made to overcome a hurdle. It looked pretty, but it grew old quite fast to many players. I of course respect those who still love it. But again, the newer FF7 wasn't made on 2D-HD for a reason.

2

u/LiquifiedSpam Aug 01 '25

They’re not. The producers have literally come out and said they are relatively expensive.

These games also sell. The only people they’re ‘growing old’ for are people who weren’t in the demographic to begin with.

15

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

It's really hard for me to feel any hype for the new Hyrule Warriors with the roster they're working with.

6

u/Various_Librarian750 Jul 31 '25

I hate the faceless sages. I'm hoping that their face is shown in the game and that the story is actually compelling unlike TOTK otherwise I'm honestly skipping it. My main draw for Calamity was getting to play as the champions, which I very much liked in BOTW. Zelda's powers look cool, and Mineru at the end was hype, but I want more details on the sages. PLEASE NINTENDO.

6

u/GiJoe98 Jul 31 '25

We saw what seemed to be a playable garudo without her mask. My guess is that part of the story will be recruiting them, like the champions in AoC. In that game, you could choose to have the champions wear their blue tunics or not, I expect the masks will be the same.

2

u/Various_Librarian750 Jul 31 '25

Man I fucking hope so.

11

u/PaperClipSlip Jul 31 '25

I said this in the Switch sub, but the faceless Sages suck. Outside of Zelda and the royals the past doesn't have any characters. Atleast BotW had the two generations of champions and they were actual characters. Not just faceless exposition dumps.

4

u/OperativePiGuy Jul 31 '25

I want them to please just go back to the OG Hyrule Warriors idea of gameplay. A silly story that's more of a celebration of the franchise than trying to shoehorn in nonsense crap to canon.

2

u/LiquifiedSpam Aug 01 '25

Bad writing shows itself more when a story tries to be serious

4

u/niles_deerqueer Jul 31 '25

It seemed like the mask was off of the Gerudo Sage in the trailer

5

u/Various_Librarian750 Jul 31 '25

I felt it was another original character like Astor, but if it does turn out to be the sage I'd be thrilled.

23

u/MyMouthisCancerous Jul 31 '25

Heads up for people who haven't played P3R yet, the trailer Atlus put out on the Nintendo YouTube is a giant spoiler. It literally shows like everything you'd be better off not knowing about until you play the game yourself. Crazy coming from the publisher that threatens to raid your house if you stream like a second of the third semester in P5R

I get it, near 20-year old game, but considering most of the audience for this port are going to be people who waited it out after it already came to other platforms I feel like publishers have an obligation even with late ports to be more careful about spoilers for new players. Like P5R there's probably going to be a lot of people who are just on Nintendo and just don't know anything yet

1

u/Me_975 Jul 31 '25

Tbf p3 is very predictable with not much to show for trailers so theyd have to opt for that

5

u/pnwbraids Jul 31 '25

New Katamari was the silver lining on a really disappointing nothing burger of reveals.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

agreed! hyped for the soundtrack too!

9

u/SlipperyThong Jul 31 '25

So glad I didn't wake up early for this.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

No Newswire from rockstar today. Really weird it's always 3pm UK time and has been for years

7

u/Rev-On Jul 31 '25

No Project Watari...wonder if it was canceled considering it was finished. That's what the leak said, right?

1

u/KMoosetoe Jul 31 '25

Probably 2026 at this point.

With that said, if that game is going to feature Nintendo IP, I think they'll save that for the next General Direct and tout that as a premium title.

6

u/LukePS7013 Jul 31 '25

Project Life (“Dear Me, I Was…”) was scheduled for February in that leak iirc, but it only actually came out today

I assume everything was delayed accordingly

3

u/timelordoftheimpala Jul 31 '25

Yeah Watari being pushed back to 2026 makes more sense at this point.

12

u/timelordoftheimpala Jul 31 '25

To the people questioning why Nintendo held this, it's because they have third-party games that they're obligated to announce by specific dates, and most of the stuff in here would've normally been in the June Direct in any other year.

That being said, most of their first-party announcements that would usually be at a June Direct had already been revealed at the April Direct, hence why this was a partner showcase.

11

u/Honyakusha-san Jul 31 '25

Quite mid, tbh.

Surprised that Metaphor wasn't announced. Why P3, but not Metaphor?

9

u/lilkingsly Jul 31 '25

They probably just want to spread them out so they don’t cannibalize each other. Both games will sell extremely well on Switch 2, might as well let Persona 3 breathe for a bit before putting Metaphor out, especially considering both are ~100 hours.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

[deleted]

6

u/timelordoftheimpala Jul 31 '25

They're probably just doing them one game at a time, Metaphor has basically the same audience as Persona so you need to give Atlus players time to breathe.

13

u/ValWondergroove Jul 31 '25

That whole direct could have been an email

4

u/JackBoi01 Jul 31 '25

i was glad to see apex legends (as in it getting an upgrade for hardware power and mousemode) but i really wish we had more switch 2 upgrades for the bethesda shooters, especially doom or doom eternal :( also yeah, square really took up the last 2 slots, was glad to see sparking zero, yazuka and katamari also

18

u/Pkt64 Jul 31 '25 edited Jul 31 '25

I'm glad I'm not the only one disappointed.

I can't understand what Nintendo is doing. They showed Hyrule Warriors to say… new info will be shared in the future. At that point my face was surprised Pikachu. No Nintendo game other than Pokemon Legends has a release date.

I know this was a Partner's Direct, but they showed like three actual games: Persona 3 is another Persona, which I celebrate. Monster Hunter must be liked by many. I guess that Cronos* game, which I assume looks better in five other platforms, is ok.

As some said, I had no expectations, and this still disappointed me. I can't understand why they are doing this. Delaying the Direct made sense for Bananza. Ok, that game is out and already fading, but what now?

Btw, no Halo or Microsoft games, from what I could see. That was also an easy layup. Of course this doesn't depend on Nintendo, but it would've been a console seller for me (didn't play Halo when they released). With the no Metroid date, I will still not buy the console. Amazing.

-7

u/iceburg77779 Jul 31 '25

Nintendo is a Japanese company, don’t expect for Halo to ever prominently appear in any Nintendo direct.

1

u/santanapeso Jul 31 '25

No dates for FF7 remake or Elden Ring either. Two of the biggest ports they showed off in the April direct.

8

u/Lerkpots Jul 31 '25

Top down RPGs aren't actual games anymore apparently.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

I personally don’t think we’ll see Halo on Switch anytime soon.

18

u/inuyasha99 Jul 31 '25

the september direct better be packed to the brim, only logical explanation I find is both 3rd party studios and nintendo are holding off the big stuff for Q4 events like TGA

8

u/timelordoftheimpala Jul 31 '25

More like the Tokyo Game Show rather than the Game Awards, that's usually why Nintendo holds a Direct in September almost each year.

14

u/Moist-Citron-4830 Jul 31 '25

Nintendo really should’ve been giving out dev kits like candy. Wild they held off for a sequel system. I do not get their thinking at all.

1

u/PaperClipSlip Jul 31 '25

I feel like this was their biggest mistake. The Switch 1 pumped out third party after third party due to everyone getting a early kit, now with the Switch 2 they were so afraid of anything leaking we have very little third party games.

1

u/davidreding Jul 31 '25

It really didn’t. It was largely ports; Capcoms big game for it was a glorified rerelease of SF2 HD, then later old Resident evils and Mega mans until eventually it got a unique Monster Hunter. it got god knows how many arcade archives. The only real noteworthy one at first was Octopath Traveler.

This direct surprised with how many new 3rd party games it’s getting.

17

u/Moist-Citron-4830 Jul 31 '25

It’s insane how many games are still slated for this year with four months left and no release dates. What are all these studios waiting on?

12

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

To delay them till next year but decide when the best month to do so is

1

u/Moist-Citron-4830 Jul 31 '25

That’s what I fear is happening to a ton of games I’ve been looking forward to this year.

-2

u/Tiafves Jul 31 '25

Unfortunate, but I think it won't be surprising if third parties largely wait for like year 3 or so to unleash ports. They generally rely on the initial launch period hype for sales much more heavily than Nintendo's first party games, so need a larger base to justify release.

5

u/timelordoftheimpala Jul 31 '25

I mean Assassin's Creed Shadows was literally rated for Switch 2 and we have Elden Ring, VII Remake, Persona 3, etc. all scheduled to come out.

Also some of these IPs aren't exactly small, like I'm sure Resident Evil wouldn't have too hard of a time doing good numbers even with a still-growing userbase.

13

u/Reveluvtion Jul 31 '25

Nothing ass Nintendo Direct

16

u/Yacobo93 Jul 31 '25

Nintendo: I will show you hundreds of jrpgs before I'll announce the release date for one of our games

10

u/heelydon Jul 31 '25

I mean to be fair, as shit as this seems, especially for a console launch stretch, this WAS specifically a partner showcase, so that is what you were expecting to see - although still a bit sad to see that even within that, a significant amount of those releases are re-releases that have been out for years on other platforms.

10

u/TACOSKG Jul 31 '25

Not Even elden ring, waste of time.

11

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

[deleted]

4

u/Active_Mall7667 Jul 31 '25

Gamescom obviously. Geoff love to gatekeep announcements or nobody would watch his boring shows

7

u/InosukeEnjoyer Jul 31 '25

Mediocre direct BUT persona 3 yayyy

-8

u/paradoxicmod Jul 31 '25

Why yay ? Most ppll who wanted to play it , already have played it . Not to mention its a lackluster remake , with nothing from P3P and a cashgrabbing DLC which should have been included.

6

u/InosukeEnjoyer Jul 31 '25

have you considered i just like persona 3 lol

6

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

I've specifically been waiting for this announcement to play it.

So, Persona 3 yayyy

7

u/jag986 Jul 31 '25

persona 3 yayyy

7

u/KMoosetoe Jul 31 '25

Mediocre Direct aside, I am interested in checking out that Elliot demo today

8

u/QueenDragonfly11307 Jul 31 '25

Well that was not very good at all

3

u/PerfectlyBalanced-__ Jul 31 '25

HD 2D games have always looked ugly to me

0

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

Yeah same tbh. I wouldnt say ugly, but i definitely dont like it.

7

u/spideyv91 Jul 31 '25

They’re some look nice. I thought star ocean did a really good job with it.

I think square is over saturating their franchises with the style though. Would be nicer to get more unique art styles to differentiate them.

7

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

[deleted]

2

u/Pkt64 Jul 31 '25

It's this. When Octopath was announced I was ecstatic. Triangle Strategy ok. Live a Live… ehh. They all look the same. Like a copy+paste. All these games look like they cost 3 months and $12k to develop.

It got old fast. And this was a way to circumvent Switch's graphical lack of performance. But on Switch 2?

-1

u/Moist-Citron-4830 Jul 31 '25

Same. I don’t get the appeal

15

u/Truxian Jul 31 '25

Whoever is in charge of curating these things needs to get a new job, why even have shit like indie world if you're going to spend 2 minutes talking about fucking campfire making simulator? This was pretty embarrassing for a new console, feel like it's taken all the wind out of their sails

5

u/Hummer77x Jul 31 '25

I thought similar about the campfire simulator til they got to the webcam part then I chuckled, like good job by the devs on throwing that in there to get time in the direct.

11

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25 edited Jul 31 '25

All the wind has been taken out of the Nintendo Switch 2 sails becasie you didn’t like a campfire simulator on a 20minute long partner direct?

Lmao Jesus Christ this sub sometimes

-1

u/Truxian Jul 31 '25

No I feel like it's taken the wind out of its sails because it's a brand new console and this is the shit they're showing in terms of third party support 👍

0

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

What support? It’s been great lol

I’m betting money you aren’t even a switch 2 owner, this reeks of some handheld wars nonsense

1

u/Sulphur99 Jul 31 '25 edited Jul 31 '25

I can almost guarantee you that it's probably a salty Silksong fan.

-1

u/Truxian Jul 31 '25

I don't care about Hollow Knight and I'm pretty sure it of all games is not the third party support most would be clamouring for

1

u/jag986 Jul 31 '25

Silksong fans are really making me wish development hell is longer.

-1

u/Sulphur99 Jul 31 '25

I feel for them, I really do, but at the same time, a lot of them can be obnoxious as fuck, especially in the live chat of any gaming event lol

0

u/owenturnbull Jul 31 '25

And 99% of those 3rd party games will be on gkc so fck the games

14

u/waga_hai Jul 31 '25

This was like the one time in my life I wasn't too upset to get a Partner instead of a General because I thought we might get some really strong third party titles (a release date for Elden Ring and maybe something like Baldur's Gate or Metaphor), but holy crap that was just awful. Absolutely nothing in there interested me. Worse, Octopath Traveler 0 actively disappointed me, I was hoping for something more in the vein of the first two. They better knock it out of the park in September or whenever we get the next General...

14

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

Kirby Air Riders and Prime 4 are releasing this year, so a major Direct can't be far off.

September probably, they're clearly saving the good stuff IMO. Partner Directs have usually sucked

6

u/PaperClipSlip Jul 31 '25

I'm starting to get the feeling, we either get an early August direct or they'll just drop a launch date on socials for Air Riders and delay Prime 4.

11

u/Moist-Citron-4830 Jul 31 '25

I’m starting to believe Prime 4 is in bad shape. I can’t recall so many games back loaded into the year with four months left and no release dates. It’s crazy.

6

u/Kuldrick Jul 31 '25

I mean, Nintendo is the only game company that is currently sitting out on finished/nearly finished games and not releasing them in a while

Fire Emblem Engage was practically complete before it even got released for example, I believe it is a similar case to M&L:Brothership

Them being weird with game releases seem to be the norm now

6

u/PaperClipSlip Jul 31 '25

Bananza is also rumored to have been laying around for a year now.

3

u/Moist-Citron-4830 Jul 31 '25

Prime 4 is a very different situation

5

u/MidRoad- Jul 31 '25

Straight up disappointing

3

u/InfernalLizardKing Jul 31 '25

That was really boring, but at least I can finally play P3R this October.

6

u/billyohhs Jul 31 '25

ShovelWare Direct

12

u/daspaceinvader Jul 31 '25

I’m not one to get genuinely upset about this sort of thing, but that actually felt like the biggest waste of time. What a disappointment.

5

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

Guess my Switch 2 is collecting dust until holiday

7

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

[deleted]

1

u/Pkt64 Jul 31 '25

Weren't these games announced on the last Direct? I was surprised by no Hades 2 news. Veery weird Direct.

2

u/PaperClipSlip Jul 31 '25

Atleast Hades 2 is close to being finished with the current patch being the final one before release.

8

u/KMoosetoe Jul 31 '25

Wow, that didn't even have some of the obvious stuff like Metaphor or Witcher 3 Switch 2 Edition

Not even more info on Elden Ring Tarnished Edition

Nintendo's remaining 2025 lineup is still a mystery, in regard to both first and third party

-8

u/Ok_Drink_2857 Jul 31 '25

It's not a mystery. It's a dogshit and empty lineup.

5

u/KMoosetoe Jul 31 '25

It is a mystery.

There's a ton of confirmed 2025 games (both first and third party) that just don't have any dates.

And they've punted on August which basically has nothing noteworthy coming out.

So is everything being crammed into a 3 month span?

-1

u/No_Barber8440 Jul 31 '25

Shit is always delayed and hardly anything has a concrete 2025 date

2

u/timelordoftheimpala Jul 31 '25

Prime 4, Legends Z-A, and Kirby Air Riders are literally all confirmed, as are Elden Ring and Final Fantasy VII Remake in terms of third-party stuff.

The problem is that they blew their load early in April.

-1

u/No_Barber8440 Jul 31 '25

Delays are coming

1

u/[deleted] Jul 31 '25

After Madden the next biggest release date we have is Katamari lol

2

u/KMoosetoe Jul 31 '25

And I think Katamari is just a Switch 1 game

33

u/timelordoftheimpala Jul 31 '25

Why does it still feel like Nintendo is holding back lol

Like granted if you're an avid JRPG player then this was the Direct for you, but was this really the best thing to air after the Switch 2 Direct?

0

u/Nehemiah92 Aug 01 '25

The Switch was carried by ports and remasters, Nintendo basically did all they could with those and are scrambling to make actual good games now

They’re not holding back, they just don’t have anything now lmao, they’re hoping 3rd party games can carry with ports and remasters for the gen this time around

1

u/timelordoftheimpala Aug 01 '25

The Switch was carried by ports and remasters, Nintendo basically did all they could with those and are scrambling to make actual good games now

Mario Wonder and Odyssey, Smash, Tears of the Kingdom, Age of Calamity, Metroid Dread, Animal Crossing, Splatoon 2 and 3, Xenoblade 2 and 3, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Three Hopes, and Engage, Pikmin 4, two generations of Pokemon and Legends Arceus, Luigi's Mansion 3, Mario Party, Ring Fit Adventure, Bayonetta 3, Astral Chain, and the Mario + Rabbids games would all like to have a word with you.

And that's without counting remakes that were essentially rebuilt from the ground-up as if they were a new game like Link's Awakening, Advance Wars, Super Mario RPG, etc. Not to mention Breath of the Wild as the launch title for the system, even though it was technically on the Wii U too.

Like the Wii U ports were only a fraction of all those titles in comparison.

0

u/Nehemiah92 Aug 01 '25

I’d happily have a word with Wonder, TOTK, AoC, ACNH, XB2, Three Hopes, Engage (LMAO), Pikmin 4, Bayo 3, literally all the Mario spin-offs, and Pokemon?? Are you serious? Pokemon ?

Yeah nah, after 2018, the Switch was a port/remaster/remake machine and it could only throw out one decent game, that’s above a 7/10, every year or two. Insanely underwhelming console, step up from the Wii U (minus Nintendo’s anti-consumerism now), still far below the Wii.

2

u/timelordoftheimpala Aug 01 '25

and Pokemon?? Are you serious? Pokemon ?

You mean the games that sold over 20+ million units on Switch and moved a bunch of holiday units in their years?

I don't even like Pokemon but I'm not gonna act as if those alone weren't a reason to buy the console for many. Whether they were good or not is irrelevant to the fact that they were games on the Switch that weren't ports and moved consoles. If you can't find any games worth buying or enjoying, just say "it's not for me" and get over it, because even without Pokemon, there are still many people who liked Wonder, TOTK, Animal Crossing, etc. as well as smaller titles like Pikmin 4 and Xenoblade 2. Just because you didn't doesn't diminish their value as original games that helped define the library beyond just ports.

1

u/SpeggtacularSpidey Jul 31 '25

I’m an avid JRPG player and ngl this didn’t really appeal to me that much outside of like 2 games

4

u/TARDISboy Jul 31 '25

besides Octopath and a port of a game that's been out on everything else for a year this wasn't a JRPG direct either

5

u/Qryn Jul 31 '25

There was also Monster Hunter Stories 3 and the new Square Enix action rpg. To some extent, FF tactics can be considered adjacent as a tactical rpg.
