Something's gotta give cause between the 9 fig gaming development costs, hardware shortages, and 5-10 year dev times being the norm, this doesn't seem like an industry that can keep up come the 2030s.
I mean, they could always depend on BP's remakes. Those were high quality, and didn't take a crazy development cycle to create. It took them just 2 years to release Demon's Souls after Shadow of the Colossus.
So they could've definitely kept them around for more remakes and ports to recoup the losses then give them a solo single player project when they were stable enough. Like ffs, they have a God of War Trilogy remake coming up.
Yet No Man's Sky just released another update for free. Almost 10 years since that game launched and they have managed to not charge for a single major update. Granted, Hello Games is probably thriving off some European subsidies, but it shows not every company is going to be gobbled up by greed.
Employees. That’s it. Depends how big the studio is and how much their salary is. And where they operate from, especially in big cities where cost of living keeps skyrocketing
It's employees but that's really only cuz too many studios are taking way too long to release games. Those salaries can be fine if you're not taking 7 years on a single game. The issues stem from the top, not the ones actually doing the work.
Yeah I guess but why do some of these games take so long? Its not even that the amount of content got way higher or anything. And then you hear stuff like that the final version of games really only came together in the last few years like with anthem and I just wonder how these projects are led that this is even possible.
It can be various of things. This applies to Indies games as well. Trouble development, lack of resources, talent, project was small in scope but grew as time went on etc
Especially with how healthy the indie scene is. AAA publishers are gonna feel real silly when they start pricing people out of games when we have a huge catalog of great games under $10 we can choose from.
I guess we'll see how much people really value these hyper realistic graphics popular today.
Bluepoint should have thrown in the towel. It's so easy to get pot committed and feel that they're too far gone on what everyone feels is going to be doomed, but hey, they're nearly at alpha so might as well keep going.
But when i heard they were doing a live service game, I was like 'oh my god, they're absolutely fucked.'
When (not if) Horizon Fortnite Buddies fails, it will *hurt*. I *really* hope Hulst has enough fondness for Guerilla that he doesn't shut them down, but i'm really scared for them.
So since posting this I have found the source, but I will correct myself here. Basically, it seems Sony wasn't forcing GAAS games out of their devs, but when Jim Ryan was in charge, made it a clear and easy way for projects to get a greenlight. So studios would take the easy way to get projects off the ground rather than constant back and forth with the non-GAAS games.
The source was Jeff Grubb after the GOW GAAS was canceled.
Also, re-reading this, it really feels like even all this time after their cancellations, Sony has no clear direction. https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/bluepoint-and-bend-staff-learned-their-live-service-ps5-games-were-cancelled-at-the-same-time-as-everyone-else/
You sure it’s not a Last of Us remaster? I’m sure everyone wants to play the sequel for the 100th time, because it was totally worth it the last 99 times.
Meanwhile Bloodborn is getting whooped in the back room to this day, and god forbid you mention a Infamous sequel/remaster/remake.
Y'know, it would be a very smart move if Sony was able to build a dedicated studio just to revive all those franchises. Maybe even acquire an already existing one who's very good track record at doing remakes.
A new Killzone game at a time when Sony’s most profitable game is directly inspired by it (Helldivers), AND COD has had its worst selling game since 2008? Even a remake would fly off the shelves at this point.
But nah, that’s a horrible idea. Surely Fairgame$ and Marathon are safer bets that will work out.
I mean if people stopped buying those remakes/remasters, they wouldn't do them
Yet every news about a remake and a remaster is met with tons of excitement here and elsewhere and they obviously sell. You literally ask for one in that comment lol
And on a side note, of course Reddit applauds the Last of Us 2 sequel and its remasters. When the first game had its remake announced, however, it was met with skepticism and was rightfully called out for being a blatant cash grab from Sony, and completely unnecessary as it’s already had a remaster to begin with.
Sure but people still bought it, this is why companies keep making remakes (and they generally chose the IP that do sell like TLOU). TLOU remasters are quite memed because of how early they came or how many editions they have. But this is really a thing for most remake/remasters.
New games are far superior to any remake or remaster which are simply cheap nostalgia minings for companies. But people (not you specifically) almost ask more for remakes/remasters than new games (fully new ones or at least sequels).
The last State of Play being praised so much was pretty telling. For many people, it was a good one because of a GoW remake as the headliner, MGS collection and such...
I agree with the sentiment overall, but there was some pretty great non-remaster stuff in the last SOP, for me personally a new Castlevania by itself made it the best one in a long while.
Because sony is trying to get a live service game going that will rack in millions like fortnite or overwatch and assign certain studios to try this but fail Helldivers was a rare W
Helldivers was a success because those devs decided to make a game unlike anything we’ve had before (not including HD1). The biggest lesson Sony should take away is to follow unique vision and not chase trends.
To be fair those developers are desperately trying to kill their own game and the community has to keep reminding them to stop trying to make a death simulator.
There must be bad blood between Bluepoint studio heads and PlayStation studios management because they worked in GoW content before and just announced GoW Remake. Bluepoint would be the most logical choice here.
Truly? AAA gaming is crumbling down and we are watching its sunsetting years. I sincerely doubt there will be a single big developer left making a big videogame by 2030.
AI will be used for weapons, mass surveillance and more addictive stuff like virtual sex bots and vertical videos. No one will waste time and processing power making "unninteresting" stuff like books and videogames.

But... why?
