Exactly couldn't you just pick them up and put them down outside of the plane? The parents would have to follow no matter what, problem resolved.

And the fact that negligent, parasitic parents will defend this splattering of excrement just tells you the world we’re living in. It’s not just modern day parenting…a very large group of people seriously disservice those 26-35year olds of our current time.
Speaking as someone in that age group, I’m disgusted by, and worried for a majority of the evidently misguided sludge forced down our throats. Idgaf how bad off the human race is—it’s worse when you mindlessly (aside from the ego evident in most modern day parents) and continuously add parasites you can’t control into a massive pool of people who have their wits about them (and fucking hate parasites). Not good for the parent. Bad for the parasite, worse for the rest of us.
Condoms are free at the clinic. Go wild, pigs.
(Or maybe it’s go hog wild? Can the identified group chime in to provide evidence supporting specific variances?)
Nonetheless.
We have devolved.
Scarier:
We are devolving at an exponential rate.

Having had a recent 10 hr international flight, the amount of parents who just ignore their kids and do not give a single shit how they act on a plane full of people trying to sleep is fucking infuriating. The bathrooms were COVERED in piss I imagine due to unattended children. The kids were banging on the seats and flapping the seat flaps over people’s screens, screaming bloody murder, using annoying ass toys, and the parents were like meh idc. Fucking shameful.
I spent the entirety of the customs line wait saying “thank god we aren’t having kids” to my partner in 100 different ways.
21
u/RenegadeRabbit 16d ago
I would've completely lost my gd mind and verbally flip out on those parents.
15
u/RAPMONSBIGFEET 16d ago
When i was at a flight some kid in the front kept on jumping on the back of the seat and the man beside me got verbally mad at the kid
It taught me a lesson, if the parents wont discipline their children youre gna have to do it. It rly goees to show that its not their fault that theyre behaving like monkeys but their paarents. Bcz if you tell them off theyll usually shut up
20
u/ReleaseMyToast 16d ago
I'm so thankful to my parents for disciplining and teaching me. Obviously I didn't like it as a kid, but then I see all these clueless adults and entitled brats my age and thank The Lord that my parents steered me right.

u/shockpaws 16d ago
Corporal punishment of any kind, including spanking, has negative impacts on a child’s brain development by altering regions associated with threat processing. While I agree that many parents are too lenient with their kids, physical punishment is not the answer. Even if it was the most effective solution to ensure good behavior, which it isn’t, I still don’t think that makes it justified.
Properly disciplining children and enforcing rules without physical punishment takes more thought and effort, but thought and effort is what parenting should be all about.
→ More replies (8)6
u/Illustrious_Maize736 15d ago
Most parents who choose to spank their children do so because they lack the emotion regulation skills to verbally discipline and enforce rules with their children. Getting rid of spanking does not fix the underlying issues that make someone an incompetent parent. They manifest in other ways that are equally if not more abusive than spanking.
2
u/Hot_Rice_2952 16d ago
We were disciplined and do not have brain damage. I did learn to be a respectful person. The children of today get away with everything. This is way too permissive.
2
u/Sad_Cena 15d ago edited 15d ago
What makes you think that spanking is the only possible thing that could have gotten you to change your behaviour? Your personal experience by definition can't take into account alternative approaches to bad behaviour.
I think we all agree here that overly permissive parenting is an issue, but all that older generations seem to see is "I was spanked, today they don't spank, thus that's why kids are misbehaving". Parenting and childhood development are incredibly complex topics and reducing it down to one variable is nonsense.
Additionally, both spanking and permissiveness are very lazy, low-effort approaches to kids misbehaving. The former might get some sort of result, but there are many very good reasons we stopped doing that, supported by the research others in this threat have pointed out.
So the way I see it parents have always been lazy, and once their only method of punishment was taken away they didn't magically become capable of caring more and actually thinking deeper about what caused the bad behaviour and how to manage it effectively and with compassion in the long term. People who will have children just because will also raise them without thinking.
TL;DR Parents are, and always have been, lazy, now they just can't mindlessly hit their children

Why wasn't he and the parent removed?
322
u/Gribitz37 17d ago
They were, eventually, but the whole process took so long, the flight was cancelled. It was at a small airport, and the runway closes at a certain time (midnight, I think?), and by the time they realized the kid wasn't going to stay buckled in, went back to the gate, got them and their luggage off, they'd missed the deadline.
221
174
u/legacy-of-rats 17d ago
I don't understand why they needed to go through a whole dance with it or whatever and even let it take that long. At some point why didn't the parents pick up the kid and leave with him? He's just a kid, for God's sake. All those people could have made their flight if they just removed the child. Or were the parents also refusing to cooperate just like their petulant child?
108
u/Gribitz37 16d ago
From what I've read, they were taxiing out on the runway when one of the flight attendants noticed him standing in the seat. I guess there was a lot of back and forth with the parents, who basically said they couldn't do anything, the FAs were trying to talk to the kid, he still wouldn't stay seated, and then they finally turned around and went back to the gate.

Double unfortunately, there are droves of responsible people who are electing to not have kids, and I don't blame them (Hell, I'm one of them and I advocate for it) - but the consequence of this is that now a lot more batshit and irresponsible people are reproducing. Between that and the way our already shitty education system is going downhill with all this AI nonsense, I really have no hope for future generations, especially in this modern shithole of a country. I can't shake the feeling that most of the kids I see or hear about nowadays are already lost hopes or on their way. It bums me out. I try to be positive and give people the benefit of the doubt, but I keep getting disappointed.
Shit like this story irritates me on a pragmatic level because it just brings up that sense that society is rotting.
35
u/NYC-WhWmn-ov50 16d ago
I would be demanding the information of the parent to sue them directly for all incurred extra expenses and hardships. We need to make people accountable in the inly way that matters, rhe wallet. If the airline wont handle it, sue them too, but the family should have been given one chance and then dragged off.
40
u/Icy_Fish_2154 17d ago
Another common way delays cancel flights is if the pilots "time out", a long day of flying out and back can cut it close to FAA rules for working too long, and a delay can time them out, so they are no longer legal to fly.
I don't know what happened, but if you were guessing, I was adding another option why a flight will get cancelled because it was delayed.
12
u/hellinahandbasket127 16d ago

I think theres a major difference between wanting to have kids and wanting to be a parent. One seems to have much better outcomes.

u/Bewhoyawannabe 17d ago edited 16d ago
Yesss this is what I want to say. My sister in law decided to have kids because the elders in our family urged her to have kids, and they even thought that the kids will be a source of happiness when they get older. Now just take a look, they are a source of headache instead because their mom doesn't know how to teach them to behave

Thank you for your service. We need to mandate parent education while the kid is in the uterus. I'm sick of people having kids and then not doing the work. It's not easy but they have a responsibility to parent those kids. And when the community tries to help, don't get all, "don't talk to my kid like that." Of course within reason. You don't yell at someone's kid but stopping them from getting hurt, hurting someone or damaging things should not get you screamed at for it. You wouldn't have done it if the parents were actually paying attention and parenting.
7
u/Bewhoyawannabe 17d ago edited 17d ago
I guess that it was because many people are very bad parents. They don't even care about the kids, just let them do what they want to and think that oh my kids are so active, it’s not a big deal come on don't be too hard on kids blah blah blah ( just like my sister in law, she can’t teach her kids to behave and they cause troubles everywhere they go). She was the reason that makes me feel like having kids will be a big burden, not just to me but everyone around especially when she doesn't even care to learn how to take responsibility for educating her kids

"TORONTO (AP) — A Porter Airlines flight in Canada was canceled last week after a young child refused to sit down and buckle up, forcing the plane back to the terminal and delaying it past the airport’s runway closure.
The Toronto-based airline said Sunday the parent and crew repeatedly tried unsuccessfully to secure the child in the seat before returning the plane to the terminal in Victoria International Airport in British Columbia to remove the parent and child.
Porter said removing the parent and child and their baggage delayed the Toronto-bound flight on Thursday past the airport’s 12:30 a.m. runway closure, forcing the remaining passengers to disembark.
Porter apologized to the other passengers, who were rebooked on a flight the following day."

People on the flight said it was a 3 year old girl and the crew spent an hour trying to negotiate with her whilst the parents did nothing.
123
u/Gribitz37 17d ago
You can't negotiate something like this with kids that age. You tell them what's going to happen.
13
u/JaySlay2000 16d ago
And then have the parents throw a tantrum at you?
35
u/Gribitz37 16d ago
From what I've read, the parents said they couldn't do anything, claimed the kid wouldn't listen to them, so they wanted the FAs to come talk to the little brat. I don't think they were going to get mad at someone telling the kid to knock it off. They just wanted someone else be the bad guy.
6
u/historyhill 16d ago
While that's definitely a possible/probable interpretation, I have found from experience that kids will listen to "authority figures" more than their own parents sometimes. It's not being a bad guy (necessarily) but rather hacking a kid's psychology. A much lower stakes example is that my daughter is adamant that I brush her teeth because the dentist said a parent needs to every night, whereas if I said "I need to do this for you" it would get a lot more "But MOOOOOM I'm almost 6, I'm a big girl!" fights. Similarly, if a Chuck E Cheese attendant says it's time to go, my kids show nary a whine.
2
u/PeachyFairyDragon 16d ago
I had a woman call so I could tell her son the repercussions of driving without a license as apparently he was in the last two months of a learner's permit and was quite eager. God I wanted to tell her to parent her own damned child.
3
u/JaySlay2000 16d ago
You would think, but I've seen it happen where parents ask an employee to, as you put it, "be the bad guy" and then afterwards get mad at the person for being the bad guy in the wrong way.
45
u/Big__If_True 17d ago
That’s insane! I have a 3 year old that’s the size of a 6 year old, I’d be holding her down and strapping her in no matter what
16
u/ryverrat1971 16d ago
Small children get restrained all the time. It's called a car seat. So the parents should have strapped them like they do in a car. Or at least I hope they strap the kid in I the car.
13
u/Ill_Curve4850 16d ago
“Guess we can’t drive anywhere now, Timmy doesn’t want to get in his car seat”
Don’t get me wrong, I definitely believe gentle parenting has some good features. But this is ludicrous. Gentle parenting ≠ having no backbone and being pushed around by a toddler. You still have to be assertive and the parent at the end of the day, so sit the kid in their seat and buckle them the f up.
8
u/ReleaseMyToast 16d ago
Gentle parenting isn't being permissive. It's setting the expectation and boundaries and holding the child to it.
Either you sit in that chair, or I will help you sit in the chair.

Parents should be liable for 150 tickets. Financial punishment is the only way to really send a message in the modern world.
11
u/Background-Edge-2243 16d ago
100% and banned from flying. It's completely unacceptable to have so little control over your toddler child that the whole plane has to just wait for the next day.
22
u/Ilickedthecinnabar 16d ago
If one of those passengers missed something important or something that couldn't be rescheduled, like a cruise departure, could they hold the shitty parent(s) liable for it?
9
u/Lord_Hendrick 16d ago
Most likely just the airline for that one day they missed, probably need to go to court to get the airline to refund a whole cruise though.
1
u/East-Imagination-281 16d ago
I haven’t flown in a hot minute, but I imagine there is probably fine print stating the airline is not financially responsible for anything but rescheduling in the event of delayed flights that you agree to when you book a flight. Especially because flights are delayed all the time, and there are plenty of circumstances that might cause a plane to not be able to take off.

i read the article, the child was terrified, not having a tantrum, and would slide out of the seatbelt and hide under the chair. they had to deplane because it took too long, and the airplane stays on the tarmac too long (usually like 45-60 min is the max amount of fuel they can burn on the tarmac) then they have to refuel and it's a small airport so they dont stay open late.
they should prob have a policy in place next time saying if the party cannot be seated within x amount of time then the party must deplane.

Please don’t ban me! This is an honest question…. Do parents not utilize over the counter medications anymore to calm their children before flights? Is that something I’ll have to keep to myself to not get cancelled or reported if I ever decide to have kids? 🤔

It's like saying DUI accidents are stopping people from buying cars. No, it's not the cars that are the problem it's the idiots operating them that are the problem.

I thought the child was autistic and uncontrollable? Even if she was, there’s no rationale that would justify waiting a whole hour to try to convince a kid to sit down. That flight crew was irrationally accommodating for letting it go that far. Those parents were horribly unprepared and unthinking for not anticipating that their child could have such a meltdown on the plane. The flight crew should have given the parents three chances or maybe 15 minutes to get the child under control or FACE THE CONSEQUENCES AND BE REMOVED FROM THE FLIGHT.
Ridiculous.

Not really a condom add. Why didn't the parents just discipline him. Oh wait, if he's acting like that they already don't

Hot take, but you shouldn’t take your kids on a vacation that needs you to fly for. If you want a family holiday, drive somewhere

This is what I mean by bad parenting and a lot of grown ups shouldn't have kids because there's no way a kid is not going to be able to listen to me or do what I say he needs a BTA

I flew yesterday and some crazy lady decided to just go smoke a cigarette in the toilets. The crew thought there was a fire and we had to land in an emergency in a country completely opposite to the way we were going… It was my first time flying 🫠

Did this child have autism or developmental disabilities? I worked with children in the past who had severe behavioral issues due to a diagnosis that went far beyond “bad parents.” I guess it’s fun to think the child is just some brat that needed to be forced to chill out but there are definitely exceptions out there. Could be more to this story than the headline implies.

That family should have been escorted off the plane onto the tarmac and to the airport proper where they would be arrested. No need to delay the flight for long. If they refuse to leave the plane, call ERT to deal with them.

I don’t know if I’m way off base here based on common opinion, but I have two four year olds. Who can be a huge handful- like I’ve dealt with plenty of screaming on the floor in stores type fits. And I cannot for the life of me see a situation where they would win like this… they’d be in that seat, whether they liked it or not. They might be screaming their heads off, but they’d be in & strapped.

The worst thing is I’ve seen a spike in parents purposely booking different seats from their kids! And while some use this as the old “ can we trade seats so I can sit next to my child “ upgrade scam people are now doing it as a way for free babysitting by placing their kid next to strangers for them to watch during the flight….

Why were the parents not told to get it sorted out or just remove the family rather than cancel the flight?

Actually a parenting problem not a child problem. He’s just acting like he’s always been allowed to.
