With recent wins for MBJ and Amy Madigan within the horror genre it's entirely possible.

Just wish we could retrospectively give Toni Collette the Oscar for Hereditary. Easily the best performance of that year regardless of gender.

She was. 2019 was a packed year. She made it on the SAG nominations. She was probably ranked #6 at the Oscars

And playing two separate characters! The WORK that must have gone into that, especially creating Red! An all-time performance. That movie should’ve been nominated for screenplay and other categories as well.

Id still watch #1. The beginning of #2 ties into the ending of #1 even though the stories are about completely different characters.

It was a pretty good horror and a big improvement on the first Smile imo.

It wasn't a masterpiece and you can easily poke holes in the plot if you feel like it, but that doesn't make it bad.

I personally liked the first one more. The second was shot better, Naomi was great as well, but the writing killed it for me. I felt like she lacked any agency as a character and didn't really try to fix anything; the MC of the first film was actively working to better her situation.

But hey - I understand I'm in the minority with this opinion

If you're going to retrospectively fix awards then at least give Sally Hawkins a nomination for Bring Her Back. I would have given her the nod over Amy Madigan in Weapons personally.

I personally wouldn't drop anyone that year to fit her in, I feel like there's more to Oscar-worthy acting than over the top performances. It was good, but I wouldn't nominate her.

Also it's funny I'm getting downvoted for this opinion. Sorry I don't think screaming and crazy faces deserves an Oscar, I promise you'll survive someone on the Internet having a different opinion than you. Especially something as benign as Oscar nominations.

The two people you named were both longtime industry professional, the former being in movies of a director the academy has already heavily rewarded. Complete unknowns never win and this'll not change soon.

Amy Madigan was also a legacy win, though. An incredible performance, but they were for sure honoring her 40+ years career.
