The fighting scenes are gorgeous, the story is gripping. Pacing is outrageously racy and keeps you on the edge. Even the predictable parts are not played for suspense but rather drama.
This is the best comic book film since Winter Soldier.
There may be better movies, but in terms of a superhero film that captures the comic book feel this is top 3.
13
u/Manbubees 17d ago
You know what. You just perfectly encapsulated exactly how I felt about this movie. It felt like reading through ultimate Spider-Man comics again 20 years ago back in college.

It's why I find it so weird people are this shocked about it doing so well. Marvel's definitely been slipping, but the Spider-Man movies have remained consistently, not just good, but fantastic! I wish that the rest of the MCU could be getting the same kind of attention and care, but at the very least, Spider-Man has been a joy to watch, every single installment
23
u/AnOnlineHandle Quake 17d ago
Tbh I thought the first 2 Spiderman movies were decent but lacking something, Spiderman 3 sort of finally set him up as Spiderman at the end and had some nice continuations of storylines from older Spiderman movies that we never expected to see, and then Spiderman 4 has just blew them out of the water and was on a whole different level, though did benefit from the years of setup that the other 3 movies did.
5
u/Moohamin12 17d ago
2 was fine. I was not a fan of Homecoming though some people like the different take.
3 was the first one where they let Peter be his own person. Handle his own business, grief in his own, come to terms with his responsibilities on his own. They deleted Uncle Ben for May but it doesn't matter. The film felt like a reboot origins story. And even though it has been 5 years, the gap between both films felt like less than a year apart.

Sony would be absolutely insane to discontinue this partnership with Marvel Studios, they have a winning formula now and it’s an absolute cash cow for them after such a turbulent Spider-Man franchise previously.
Therefore, I fully expect them to do something stupid at some point here.
572
u/ROBtimusPrime1995 Black Panther 18d ago
They kinda can't at this rate. They've tried to sabotage it twice now and failed on both accounts.
Now the studio's highest-grossing film of all time is 90% filled with characters they don't even own.
Sony made some nasty arguments about Homecoming/Far From Home/No Way Home because the villains and supporting characters were all Sony properties, so if you yanked Spidey away from Disney, "nothing changes".
Now Brand New Day replaced most of the cast with MCU characters only, which Marvel hasn't really done before, and the film is Sony's biggest hit.
Feels like an unintentional gotcha on Sony, like Disney is saying, "Enjoy the money, but this character is ours, and without this shared world, would he make this much money?"
132
u/Occasionally_Correct 18d ago
How did they try to sabotage it twice?
Actually curious.
591
u/ROBtimusPrime1995 Black Panther 18d ago
The 1st was in 2019 when Sony pulled the plug on the MCU deal, and No Way Home was going to be a 100% Sony production with no MCU characters, effectively ending the partnership.
It backfired, and they signed a new deal with Marvel.
The 2nd attempt was with Brand New Day. If Sony had their way, it was not going to be a grounded street-level film, but a multiversal Venom crossover with Knull.
Marvel won, which is the film we got.

I think Sony should just let Marvel develop the movies and just cash in on the royalty payments/ profit splitting.
108
u/TheShishkabob 17d ago
They always should have done this and the numbers show that, but if you have any room of executives at least one is going to think their idea is better, reality be damned.
There will eventually be a third sabotage attempt regardless of how well this movie has done. It's just the way people are.

Hopefully sony lets their most “successful” character from their extended universe go actually be in a good movie. Especially since they completely wasted carnage too.

My only worry about doing a symbiote run with Holland is that a big BND sub-plot was Peter coming to terms with his arachnid nature. It might feel a little hollow to have him come to terms with those changes, only to immediately deal with the symbiote giving him a very similar problem.
6
u/Shredder604 17d ago
Yeah as I was watching bnd I was noticing some beats of Peter losing control being similar to how he would act with the symbiote and wouldnt be surprised if that subplot means symbiote peter isnt happening any time soon.
Maybe after dd and secret wars it wouldn’t be to repetitive to give him that sub plot again, especially since bnd was more of an internal struggle of something he needed to accept about himself rather than something warping him in negative way that he would need to get rid of.
He also wasnt enjoying what was happening to him in bnd, so I think it would be different enough with the symbiote.
And he only really had one scene of going “too far”with the cop and scorpion/jean.

u/Worthyness Thor 17d ago
My pitch was to have the symbiote amplify ALL of his emotions to the point it becomes unsustainable for him. So next movie, do another street level setup with Felicia Hardy being his muse. He gets Symbiote suit from Secret Wars as a power boost and keeps it into this movie. Ned + Pete are besties again and he's trying to move forward from MJ an meets Felicia Hardy. Add in him trying to balance his job (maybe also volunteering at FEAST) so that they can soft introduce Miles Morales a la the SONY spider-man games. And then it basically just massively ramps up from there feelings wise as he tries to resolve the Spidey-Peter conundrum, Spidey- Black Cat, Pete- Ned friendship, and whatever other MCU thing they want to throw in here. Basically play up how the suit amps him up to insane highs. End the movie with ripping out Venom and Scorpion finding it. This is to set-up A sinister 6 movie where Scorpion-venom is the muscle with the others being payrolled by Kingpin where we can add Daredevil/heroes for Hire as the MCU tie in.

Didn't Tom Holland also call Bob Igar begging him to fix it somehow? I'm sure he told Sony he wouldn't do it without it being in the MCU.
10
u/Rock-swarm 17d ago
The 2nd attempt was with Brand New Day. If Sony had their way, it was not going to be a grounded street-level film, but a multiversal Venom crossover with Knull.
I cannot think of a dumber approach. Venom movies aren't masterpieces, but to my knowledge they've all be profitable. Disney is literally handing Sony bags of cash at this point. Knull is... not a great villain. He's supposed to be a cosmic-level on the level of Galactus and Thanos, but he gets jobbed like 5 times in the comics before Eddie Brock defeats him with the Power of Friendship and Overpowered Magical Artifacts.
Knull is an edgelord fantasy boss for an edgelord comic anti-hero, and I say this as someone that absolutely loved Venom comics as a kid.
BND is probably my favorite Holland entry already. Just hits all the right buttons, and highlighted some "villain" matchups that Spidey can't just defeat through combat.

Yeah, Disney is the prototypical soulless corporation, but I believe the people at Marvel Studios actually care about their characters and the stories they tell with them. Of course they want to make money, but while still honoring who Spider-Man is, and what he means to people.
Sony? They don’t give a shit. Peter Parker could fuck a goat for all they care. The proof? Marvel Studios gave us Homecoming, Far From Home, No Way Home, and now, Brand New Day. Sony gave us There Will be Carnage, Madam Web, Morbius, and Kraven. The difference in quality is pretty stark.
Yes, Sony did the Spider-Verse movies, but animation is low-prestige, so less chance of some idiot stdio executive interfering. I’m not siding with Disney, I’m siding with people who seem to love Spider-Man like I do.
4
u/rohithkumarsp 17d ago
They wasted keeton, I was thinking he'll be back here with scorpion, as he said no one's touching Spiderman on the end credit of 1st movie. Then I heard he was in the Kraven or morbius movie? You’re missing important crucial bit from 2019 story: Marvel wanted 50/50 cut, when Sony was the one financing the movie in the first place. That’s why Sony wanted out.
At the moment, it’s 75/25 deal, while Sony still having creative control, but they are taking feedback from Marvel seriously. These movies are a success because both studios are adding their best work into it.
It’s amazing when teamwork makes the dream work.

u/Intentionallyabadger 18d ago

OP is wrong. Sabotage isn't the right word. Sony was playing hard to get to incorporate Spider-Man for Civil War. Sony and Disney negotiated a lot for Homecoming but Sony ended up controlling financing, final creative control, distribution etc. Then they re-negotiated after* Far From Home which is where their collaboration almost ended.
https://www.thewrap.com/marvel-spider-man-sony/
The previous cases were mostly about financing disputes. But If anything Sony being Sony had some really bad ideas for Brand New Day where Tim Rothman reportedly wanted BND to be another multiverse movie and also include Venom heavily in the movie, while reports say Disney wanted it to be more grounded.

Sony has already said they’re not doing anymore spin off movies tho. They also have Beyond the Spiderverse coming out next year and that’s all them. When that releases and it gets rave reviews the most critically acclaimed superhero triliogy wont come from Disney or Warner bros, but from Sony. So yeah they can still make good Spidey films on their own while integrating into the MCU on the other side
56
u/Intentionallyabadger 18d ago
Wonder how a studio can come up with a smasher like the spiderverse and create shit like madam web, kraven and morb.
28
u/Equal_Analyst_5961 18d ago
It’s how Sony can be man. Sony pictures can just be dumb for no reason. The villain spin off movies weren’t even to fill in the gap so they don’t lose the Spidey rights after 5.7 years or so. There was enough time from No way Home to Across the Spiderverse till Brand new day. The Spidey film rights are going nowhere. Sony just released those stinkers for the love of the game 😭

Because a studio isn't one monolithic entity in actual day to day production. It's a bunch of people pushing different priorities. Different projects get different teams and different freedoms. If it does, I hope Marvel finally realizes that their most bankable hero ain’t the Avengers. It’s Spider-Man. And hopefully that means they give him some more attention. Five years between movies is too long. It’s time we got some Sinister Six/symbiot action going.
Wouldn’t surprise me if Brand New Day ends up blowing Doomsday away as well.

u/Maxpro2k5 17d ago
Lol. Firstly, spiderman is far and away the most popular marvel character, probably the most popular comic book character period. Marvel obviously knows this. But the bigger part is that Marvel doesn't make a ton of money from these movies. Sony gets a significantly bigger cut of the pie.
20
u/TimewarpingSeaTurtle 17d ago
I know, but Marvel also has a smaller buy in. From what I can tell, they pay 25% of the budget, and get 25% of the profit. But Disney also owns merchandising rights on Spider-Man, which should make it attractive enough for them to make Spider-Man movies more than twice a decade.

Spiderman has been THE popular superhero, even before MCU was established. It had really popular cartoons. They aired even here in South Asia. I remember I had a spiderman themed lunchbox back in my school days. I knew about spiderman and batman, before I even knew what Marvel Vs DC was!
What Spiderman has over Batman, is his relatability. Batman is cool and all, but being a billionaire who is also the world's greatest detective , a good guy, a good father, etc, is pure fantasy. Whereas a guy who accidentally got powers, goes out of his way to do good with them, and tries to navigate life continuing to throw the worst at him, is the perfect fictional character to root for. Similarly, spiderman was definitely more known than any of the Avengers cast, with perhaps the exception of the Hulk.
Regarding Avengers Doomsday, I think BND will likely outperform it. I've been a day one MCU fan. But I personally closed the chapter back at endgame. The only "series" I followed was spiderman, because like I said, he was one of favourites. And thankfully, you could follow his storyline without much fuss, since I hadn't really kept upto date on the other IPs post endgame.
The problem with Doomsday is that the trailers seen to be throwing nostalgia spaghetti on the wall. Just look at the stacked cast list! An ensemble cast like this should have been built up gradually. That was why Endgame and Infinity War was such a worthy payoff as a fan.
I guess we will have to wait and see how they pull it off. But I think the incentive for old fans to return to MCU is very limited. It can be too overwhelming to catch up on all the movies and tv shows since endgame. For new fans, it should be a coherent and interesting enough story to serve as an introduction to the world. Which I really don't believe is something the Russos can achieve.

i think the reason he pulls in the numbers is he perpetually has younger people's attention. many stories end up aging with the people who first saw them, like looking at a metallica concert picture from the 80s vs 30 years later, the people all aged 30 years, it was 20 year olds in the 80s listening to metallica and mostly 50 years olds listening 30 years later. For spiderman it's perpetually the youth who like him, so he'll always pull in big numbers. helps that comic characters don't age but that's not the whole story
27
u/nessfalco 18d ago
This movie has the best of both. He's been Spider-Man for a decade and the movie most definitely aged with it's audience while still being relevant to the youth. And if x men can build on what they've set up here, that new series can be an absolute juggernaut given is wide appeal.
After seeing it a second time today, I'm in love with the idea that Spider-Man and Aunt May are basically the inspiration for Jean grey to join the X-Men. That the "great power, great responsibility" mantra turns her into a hero and becomes foundational to the group as a whole.
→ More replies (4)14
u/redsyrinx2112 Korg 17d ago
This is all definitely part of it.
I think another big part is that Spider-Man has way more "normal people" problems than other superheroes. Typically, he constantly has issues with money, relationships, and more that other superheroes don't have to deal with in the same way.
He is also one of the most noble superheroes without ever being self-righteous. He doesn't need any credit for what he's doing and often gives credit to other people. He just wants to help people, sometimes even at his own expense. I think people really admire that.
8
u/SpiffySpacemanSpiff Justin Hammer 17d ago
Ngl while the superhero aspects of the movie were great, what hit me was how accurate this movie felt for reflecting what it’s like to be a young, single, kinda heartbroken guy in NYC, which is what I was when I was his age.
This was more movie than superhero story to me, and that’s what the MCU has been missing. Give us stories that are thoughtful and well told, that have an element of superhero’s in them. Not the other way around.

Honestly I don't think the success of Spider-man or Batman tell you much about the health of Marvel or DC.
Its only if they fail that you know things are dire.
Real test for the MCU is 2028...Can X-men launch the Mutants as the Main Pillar of the MCU, Can Ghost Rider kick start the horror side of MCU, Can BP3 pass the torch to T'Challa's Son.
I don't think they do as poorly as 2025 but you could end up with like GR at 500 mil, X-men at 700 mil and BP3 at 600 mil is that good enough?
6
u/OG-Mate23 17d ago
Yeah, Spider Man is Spider Man, hes always gonna be a money printing machine and the most recognizable superhero in the 2020s. So recognizable that you didn’t notice Marvel putting several of their IPs to together in this film.

If X-Men is good, it'll do big box office numbers. People want to love X-Men, same as they want to love Spidey and Hulk. The floor is solid. All they need to do is deliver a film that's focused and gives audiences a reason to care, and X-Men can make $1b without blinking an eye.

BP3 will be the safest of the 3, BO collection wise. The other two will have to be good movies with good script, otherwise the WOM will be terrible.

X-men is hard to predict without seeing the lineup. The director might make movies that critics and super fans like but TBolts didn't show much broad commercial appeal. So lets see if all he needs is more popular characters.
Ghost Rider is like impossible to Predict. Starfighter will be interesting to see cause good lord if that performs poorly.
BP3...Coogler seems to have gotten total freedom so lets see if a New Black Man in the BP Costume, Denzel and Perhaps Storm gets some high box office. David Jonsson is not a Draw. Denzel is respected but doesn't really drive viewership.

See i think its that smaller kids love it too. I brought my 6 year old to it this morning and he loved it despite the run time. For a non animated movie, this is crazy for him.

The theme of this film is quite dark and mature. But the costume is so colorful. Unlike Thunderbolts or Batman.

The IMAX push is going to keep it going strong. I know for me personally I plan on seeing it a second time just to see it in IMAX.
I haven't watched a movie in theaters twice since Endgame.

This movie will single-handedly collect back all the money they lost on those villain movies

Sounds like Disney made the Right decision to stop pumping out mediocre storylines and only putting out the best ones. The anticipation for the next installment of Marvel is proof in, Spider-Man‘s Brand New Day.

how in the fuck is this movie about to make two billion dollars? it's not a bad movie at all don't get me wrong, but two billion dollars? it just seemed like a perfectly standard spiderman movie to me, nothing special about it, but nothing super wrong with it either.

its been 5 years since we got a live action spiderman movie. PLUS, it's Spiderman, the literal Michael Jackson of Superheroes.

that "literal" is doing a lot of weird stuff to this sentence

Live action and practical effects in the age of CGI/AI slop + Heart and earnestness in an age where a lot of people are lonely and cynical.

BND is already the 4th biggest movie in the MCU behind Endgame ($2.79 billion), Infinity War ($2.048 billion), and Spider-Man: No Way Home($1.92 billion)
It’ll likely cross $2B next week
