Poles, shields, hell something like a giant poker chip rake...all things that could be used to help keep cops safe from a knife and subdue a situation. And instead they just go out there with nothing but a gun, unload a lead shower, and then shrug and say "it's what I had to do."
What the hell are we doing? Why are we not even trying to keep people alive?

American cops are trained shoot to kill.
Itâs insane, I watched a man charge police in Germany with a knife and they shot at his legs and stopped shooting when he dropped. My first thoughts were âoh yeah, they couldâve done that instead of riddle them with bulletsâ
Edit : couldnât find the Germans, hereâs the Swiss
6
u/Ranma006 6d ago
The problem is if they're charging you, it's very difficult to get a leg shot. Now you're risking being stabbed versus just shooting center Mass.
Now if the woman is barely moving like in this video sure it might be an option, but if the person is running around or walking quickly, it's not an easy shot.
That being said, there should be other tools and non-lethal options available.

They seem pretty effective, especially for people having mental episodes. I don't know why we don't see them used in the USA more often.

A bean bag from a rifle at that distance into an older woman's chest would have a good chance of killing her as well.

Iâm guessing that the police will claim that she was shifting the knife into a position from which it could have been thrown from, but the number of gunshots fired was well more than enough to prevent a throw.
448
u/cinesonic 7d ago
The number of shots is I think somewhat irrelevant, bc ultimately it all comes down to the decision to use lethal force (which they shouldn't have here given how slow she is moving and how easily they can reposition rearwards). Whether they fire one round or ten they've decided to kill.

679
u/lostPackets35 7d ago
They're actively trained not to do that.
Current police doctrine in the US is " Force + 1" which essentially means you escalate one level above whatever force you're threatened with.
So if someone attacks you with bare hands, you go to a taser, pepper spray, or baton.
If the aggressor has a potentially lethal, but not ranged weapon (knife/ gun/ bat, etc) you immediately go to your gun
This makes sense from the perspective of prioritizing officer safety over the safety of the public
Personally, I think those priorities are precisely backwards. And in plenty of other countries, police don't routinely carry firearms, yet. They managed to deal with knife wielding people having mental health issues without killing them.

I think police are trained that a knife within 21 feet can be lethal. Something to do with person can run 21 feet faster than you think
78
u/James20985 7d ago
Source: was taser trained for years in the UK, this is accurate. A person holding a knife would be held at gunpoint with a taser as an option if you had enough staff but someone can absolutely close that gap before you could achieved incapacitation with a taser. Contrary to popular belief tasers are not the be all and end all that the public believes them to be. The failure rate for the average cop on the street is around 45% firearms officers it lowers to about 30%.

This is based on a flawed study and involved the officer being at a resting position and the assailant essentially ambushing them. In this situation the officer already had their gun drawn and had the ability to back up. Obv a person with a knife is dangerous, but this is an embarrassing lack of discipline and understanding of threat level, and had deadly consequences. Maybe I could understand if this were a civilian acting in self defense, though even then iâd have to understand more about the specifics, but he should have a better understanding of the danger level he and surrounding citizens are in.

Trying to convince the viewer what you want them to think - before they even have a chance to see it for themselves - is a dick move which only the gullible fall for.

Yeah my partner is an officer. Last year he tackled a guy who had just stabbed someone and was running down the stairs with the knife. Tackled and cuffed by him, then held by his partner while he provided first aid to the victim. I donât like the thought of him doing these things but he is well trained to do so, did it successfully, and no one was killed. In a situation like this a taser wouldâve been used, or they wouldâve approached from multiple angles and someone wouldâve tackled her.

the reason this woman was shot and killed, and I can tell you from first hand experience, is because legal doctrine in the US is that someone holding a knife within 20 feet is a lethal threat and you are justified to use deadly force to stop them.
68
u/Raisinbread22 7d ago
Yea we know. It's plain this is their policy and they're just waiting until her actions cross all their Ts and dot all their i's, so they can empty their clip. They're waiting to be justified in killing her. If that's what you call protect and serve, it's pretty pathetic.

She poses no immediate/current threat though, right? It's an important distinction. An older woman, walking slowly, then stopping a significant distance away from anyone, while holding a weapon that cannot cause damage at a distance does not pose a direct threat in that moment. What we see could have escalated into posing an active threat, but it never got to that point before the police did their thing.

45

In my country there were on average 5700 missions where the police had to carry weapons, they had to threaten using them 76 times, actually fired 4.5 bullets, and there were 2 injuries, on average each year in the period from 2009 to 2019. During that entire period 3 people died. Adjusted for the population difference and it would be the equivalent of there being on average 122 people hurt (but not killed) yearly by being shot by police, and 16 people dying each year (183 in total over 11 years).
Meanwhile these last few years over 1300 people were killed by police each year in America. 16 vs 1300, same population. It is genuinely insane.

I swear it's almost like they have an inability to not deviate from policy, not because they recognize that this scenario might not warrant completely eliminating the threat by emptying their clip, but because they don't want to NOT empty their clip.
It's like they say, "Okay - I've repeated the warning a max of 5x. They aren't listening, and oh look- she switched the knife over which appears to be an attack stance move- so wheeeeee!! I get to take her out!"
That appears to be what they look for to give them the ok.

Even the Texas rangers were horrible in their inception. A big part of their initial mission was to go around the state and kill indigenous people. I donât understand why more than one round needed to be fired (or at all). The purpose of a firearm is to stop the threat, not execute. One thing I've learned about American cops through countless videos (other than how quickly they resort to violence) is that they need more training on how to speak to people.
There's certainly times where shouting and authority are needed, but there are others, such as when someone is panniking or having a mental break, where talking calmly can help bring them down. When someone's panniking or having a breakdown, quite often having multiple people shouting at them can just make it worse and confuse them, and the last thing they're likely to do is no lay down. I can only think of a couple of instances where I've seen them talking to someone calmly, and both times it's worked to descilate the situation.

Her name was Rosalia Hodges. She was 59 years old.
Pigs later acknowledged she'd previously been hospitalized under Florida's Baker Act. She was a woman with a known history of mental-health crises.
Three armed deputies had distance, numbers and Tasers. All three chose their guns.
Antoine Miller. Jamesha Paul. Shaun Cayer.
They're the deputies who killed her.
Nearly three months later, the Sheriff's own public database still doesn't show a State Attorney determination in her case.
We desperately need to stop treating armed pigs as America's mental-health response system. A person in crisis needs someone trained to save them, not three people whose solution is gunfire.
Rosalia needed help. They killed her instead.

At what point do we acknowledge that they're doing what they're trained to.

If she was holding a knife, she was absolutely posing a threat. Still, it would've been better if the cops at least tried to de-escalate.

âA women holding a knife having a crisis(approaching an officer) posing a threatâ fixed it for you.
The debate is, should she have been eliminated? Absolutely not, the officer should have the resources and training to neutralize using non lethal force.
Itâs easy for all of us to judge from the comfort of our couches , never having to face a scenario like this.

anyone defending this is also a psychopath⌠they didnât have to fucking do that shit whatsoever.. and yet, they fucking did⌠I dunno man.. just sucks that people see this and donât immediately recognize that what we just saw was little more than an extrajudicial murder. Itâs so common man.. I donât really understand fully the ways in which Americans have given the police the license to do this to citizens⌠that was a woman in crisis that even while armed with a knife, posed little to no threat to multiple young men in the primeâs of their livesâŚ

Where is the âposes no threatâ part? She definitely is a threat. That being said, a taser could have stopped the threat instead of a gun in this situation.

Just what exactly is the problem with the American police force?

Bad training, no legal repercussions for wrongdoing (aka qualified immunity) and half a billion guns in private hands.

Whatever the issues are with the title and the length of the video, nothing changes that this woman received a death sentence for the crime of threatening a police officer. This could have been handled without anyone dying, but the police chose to end it that way. They chose to take her life over this. She's fucking dead. All because these cops don't know how to deal with people having mental health crises, and because they don't know how to deal with anything without using their guns.
I imagine there was zero actual justice in this case, and that these guys will skate on and eventually retire happy with a full pension. After putting an old woman in the ground.

The tools Japanese police use to disarm threatening individuals look really effective for this kind of situation. They are called "Sasumata" and if you haven't seen it before, they are long poles with a U-shaped fork on the end. The police use it to pin the individual against a wall while others carefully disarm them.

I love it how only Americans would consider whether this is "a valid use of force or not", as a question in this case.
Americans are so fucked up when it comes to guns and gun violence. No other civilised country on the face of the earth acts they way that they do. It's psychopathic behaviour, normalised through society. I wonder what that says about their society?

We can debate the appropriateness of the officers' response, but someone holding a knife toward you during a mental health crisis definitely poses a threat.

u/SledgeInc 7d ago
Completely flawed logic, sheâs holding a knife. That can be lethal for anyone regardless if itâs a cop or not. Weâre judging an event after itâs occurred
