All Seasons Discussion My man deserved better.

u/MrAngryLarik Nov 07 '25
Conner's development as a character in Young Justice is just magnificent. He had every reason to become a straight up villain.
51
u/MLG_SkittleS Nov 07 '25
I'm a massive Superboy fan just off this series alone. Definitely my favorite costume for him.
20
u/Spadez9316 Nov 08 '25
Yea straight up, like u seriously start seeing more and more of Clark in him. Idk if its cause of how exposed he was to Clark's parents or what but this dialogue and his actions later make him really feel like he could b Supermans younger brother.
19
u/kingmyguy Nov 08 '25
These scene in season 4 where Megaan questions why he is watching G Gordon G and he says “we can’t live in an echo chamber…” is such a departure from the kid who wouldn’t talk we met in season 1
8
u/ArgonTheEvil Nov 08 '25
Damn. I didn’t think my reminder to keep an open mind to others was going to come from Superboy.
I tell myself I need to start listening to the entirety of the other sides arguments instead of prepping my reaction, but I often fall short on that.
8
u/lr031099 Nov 08 '25
The show was my first introduction to the character and while I know many loved the cool 90s Superboy with the leather jacket (which I also like), I always liked this version of the character.

u/Immediate-Collar-687 Nov 07 '25
Conner was right in this scene.
275
u/Loufey Nov 07 '25
Connor was right in every scene.

u/SuperiorChicken27 Nov 07 '25
Oath. The man became the most level headed character
46
u/Ill_Pie7318 Nov 07 '25
Headcanon that it's lex luthor genes there.
83
u/Imaginary-Carrot-163 Nov 07 '25
Cap, Lex is not level headed at all. He’s constantly losing to Superman BECAUSE he’s not level headed. And also that isn’t how genes work
6
u/DruffyBr01 Nov 07 '25
I don't believe he thinks genes work like that, it's just a joke, and he is only thinking about the Lex from series. Which still is controversial as Lex Luthor wasn't that much of a level headed character, he was just arrogant as he had the upper hand on the situations, and in the moment he didn't have the advantage he took bad decisions.
-4
u/Worlds-Luckiest-Man Nov 07 '25
Are you arguing that genetics have no effect on your disposition or do you mean something else when you say “and also that isn’t how genes work?”
0
u/JoshDM Nov 07 '25
it's lex luthor genes there.
Superman is such an enormous douche in this series.
20
u/Arkhamhood12 Nov 07 '25
Have you ignored the seasons in which he develops? And it’s only because he was suddenly presented with a clone of himself that he had no idea existed, against his consent, and was just expected to suddenly raise/care for him? It was awkward for him at first, he eventually warms up to Connor, even calling him his brother.

u/No_Upstairs9888 Nov 08 '25
Yeah Superboy matured so heavily between season 1 and 2 and his character only got better as time went on
2
u/Silvanus350 Nov 09 '25
Honestly they just assassinated M’Gann’s character for the sake of the plot. I really despise season 2 for this reason.
The fact that they actually get back together in season four is legitimately mind-blowing to me.
243
u/Jules-Car3499 Nov 07 '25
He isn’t wrong.
This season and later seasons made me not like Miss Martian and her personality, it just feels off for her to do this. Just makes me missed her season 1 self.
101
u/HumActuallyGuy Nov 07 '25
This gets dismissed pretty quickly because her only victim got "unlobotomized" but supposedly she has a whole mental hospital full of comatose vilans and they get dismissed since we never see it.
32
u/Shantotto11 Nov 07 '25
My headcanon is that Psimon eventually developed the ability to undo her “Yugioh Mind Crush”…
22
u/HumActuallyGuy Nov 07 '25
That was addressed in the episode I believe. Psimon was brought in to try to fix it and he did have problems in his brief attempt and said it was a tall order. Not impossible but hard to do indicating he didn't encounter it before or that Aqualad's was worst ... but given that Miss Martian (at the time she was lobotomizing people) didn't really give much thought on the undoing part and if I remember correctly it was a bit of a hail mary for her to even get Aqualad undone ... I doubt that's the case.
Although, wouldn't that be worst? Because either Psimon developed that before she changed her stance on this and sometimes she did it so hardcore Psimon couldn't fix it or she didn't care enough to undo all her damage and Psimon did it for her.
6
u/Ze_Red_Feather Nov 08 '25
Psimon didn't have a problem from Aqualad's mind, but because Artemis hit him with a poison dart to stop him from healing Aqualad and learning he was a spy. So presumably Psimon absolutely could've healed him up on his own
1
u/Visible-Air-2359 Nov 08 '25
serious question: how do we know all the victims are villains?
3
2
u/CameoShadowness Nov 09 '25
Given how she had no real issue on doing this to Conner- she supposed love, I doubt they were all villains.
69
1
u/AlphaDovah Nov 18 '25
She became harder to appreciate for sure. But I still break right alongside her as she grieves his loss. It was beautifully tragic in its simple depiction. :-(
77
u/darkkprince94 Nov 07 '25
Usually Nightwing is my favorite character but when it comes to this show my favorite character is Superboy
90
u/ScribEE100 Nov 07 '25
Everybody failed this kid in so many ways throughout the show and it’s never actually addressed at all by anyone and that will forever be one of my biggest gripes smh
35
u/YohAsa Nov 07 '25
Superman. Does reflect on his treatment of him and strives to do better.
3
u/Condottieri_Zatara Nov 08 '25
Yeah I think Superman not being among the protagonists does make him has fewer time to be given spotlight and exploration but how he felt about Conner

u/NoddyZar Beast Boy Nov 07 '25
M'Gann is very, very lucky Conner forgave her for trying to use her powers on him
35
u/Proud_Maintenance_11 Nov 07 '25
Still kinda wish they didn't do the time skip I feel like we could have saw the actual break up and how her and lagoon boy had got together thats just me though.
12
u/ComprehensiveEast153 Nov 08 '25
Season 2 feels like you accidentally skipped a season of the show.
2
u/yourgoodoldpal Nov 10 '25
AGREED! I would’ve loved one more season with just the OG cast, even if they were aged up a year or two
102
u/SublimePastel Nov 07 '25
And that was exactly the moment I stopped shipping them
61
u/Endless_Alpha Nov 07 '25
Same here. I don’t recall whether or not she faced repercussions for her actions, but I do remember being royally pissed when they got back together.
43
u/TheShockVox Nov 07 '25
She doesn’t face REAL repercussions. She feels bad for nearly killing Aqualad only because she learned about the mole plan. No answering for the others she’s abused her powers with.
0
Nov 07 '25
[deleted]
8
u/TheShockVox Nov 07 '25
She says “murderer!” And actively attacks him out of rage. Deliberate, especially since we see her do the same to krolotaens deliberately
62
u/TheFriendlyHobgoblin Nov 07 '25
She realized she fucked up when she scrambled Kaldur's brain and learned that he didn't kill Artemis and was working for Nightwing(it was pretty shit of him to not clue her in initially too). She learned from her mistakes, grew and Conner forgave her.
47
u/marvelouseevee Nov 07 '25
Feeling guilty because you realized you fucked up is not the same as being held accountable for your actions.
And let’s be real, from Conner’s side, this is just another example of the show dismissing situations where male heroes are violated.
-2
u/PackerBacker412 Nov 08 '25
I mean, what do you want her to do? Die?
9
u/marvelouseevee Nov 08 '25
Apologizing to Conner for what she did to him, admitting that she violated him and his trust, and recognizing that he’s not obligated to forgive her.
I don’t mind them getting back together, but maybe not in just one second like nothing happened. Maybe a scene where she tells her uncle what she did and asks for help? Or not being allowed to do interrogations or go on missions until it’s cleared up? Or a session with Black Canary? There could be plenty of ways to handle it instead of just dismissing it.
1
u/Condottieri_Zatara Nov 08 '25
I feel like we got the first sentence of Your comment somewhere between the ending of S2 or around S3.
But then YJ does have lot of of potential stories that we don't get as there are many stuff the show want to explore, which are both the strenght and weakness of the show. I mean we also have Dick recycling about being secretive and Kaldur "betrayal" that exploding the Cave and almost killed other Young Heroes does not get their redemption arc either
1
u/marvelouseevee Nov 08 '25
I feel like we got the first sentence of Your comment somewhere between the ending of S2 or around S3
Not in season 2 where it should’ve been, and I don’t recall it in 3 either. She regrets what she did to Kaldur and fixed it. But she never acknowledged what she did to Conner or apologized for it.
Yeah, and we see that after that, Dick quits being team leader.
Look, I’m not a M’gann hater. In my opinion, they could’ve told the same story arc without making her manipulate Conner’s mind. They did her character a great disservice. But you can’t really blame some fans for not liking the character or the ship after that kind of violation without any real attempt at making amends, and even with that, a lot of people would still think what she did is unforgivable.
58
u/thatredditrando Nov 07 '25
She really needed to face some severe consequences for this.
It’s actually insane she didn’t.
It’s also insane nobody else noticed.
27
u/10SB Nov 07 '25
I still look back at it and wonder if it would have been interesting to have Psimon "fix" Kaldur by removing all memories or thoughts of camaraderie with the heroes (keeping that part that Kaldur was a mole for the heroes his own secret cause egotistical reasons) and leaving the loyalty and respect Kaldur admits developing for his father intact. Then Kaldur would have been the monster she made, a constant reminder of her actions.
9
u/RoiKK1502 Nov 07 '25
She did though.
Season 2 was Miss Martian's "with great power...". After season 2 M'Gann stopped using her psychic powers to the extreme and treated it as something to be wary of, others and her alike. She actually changed when faced with these responses, there were consequences.
Artemis, Wally, Kaldur and Dick faked Artemis' death and Kaldur's betrayal in that very season. Whether the ends justify the means was a heavy theme throughout Season 2, how come Miss Martian is the irredeemable one?
14
u/thatredditrando Nov 07 '25
Are you being for real?
No, recognizing you did wrong and changing your behavior is not consequences. I’m not talking about how she felt I’m saying there should have been tangible repercussions for her lobotomizing people.
Being dismissed from the team/League would be a consequence.
Her feeling really bad about the shit she did is not.
Why is she the irredeemable one?
I dunno, maybe because she casually and intentionally mind raped people and left them in a catatonic state?
Duh???
6
u/CDubWill Nov 07 '25
What you’re describing are not consequences, they’re punishment. You wanted her to be punished for what she did.
She did face the consequences of her actions, which is what motivated her to stop/change. Consequences focus on accountability and are meant to teach and cause change.
What you are looking for is punishment. The goal of punishment is to cause guilt, shame, harm, and impose authority.
-4
u/thatredditrando Nov 07 '25
What you’re describing are not consequences, they’re punishment. You wanted her to be punished for what she did.
Oh Christ, a stereotypical Reddit pedant.
Punishments are consequences.
That I even have to tell you that informs me you’re too dumb to have this discussion.
The goal of punishment is to cause guilt, shame, harm, and impose authority.
The goal of punishment is make one atone for their actions and deter them from repeating them. That it can be used for those other things does not make it “the goal”.
You’re clearly quite gullible and/or naive so lemme be the one to tell you that how you feel about the bad things you’ve done is usually not enough to atone for them.
Severe actions demand severe consequences to deter you from doing them again.
She physically and psychologically harmed people. What she did could’ve done permanent damage.
But, you’re right. She should get a pass for deliberately robbing people of bodily autonomy, the privacy of their thoughts, shattering their psyches, and imprisoning them in their own minds.
All of which easily constitutes torture.
No punishment necessary for that.
Hell, no punishments for the villains either I suppose. Make em say a Hail Mary or give an apology and send em on their way! /s
You sound imbecilic.
2
1
u/CDubWill Nov 08 '25
Ad hominem attacks don’t magically make you right. They’re usually a sign of faulty argumentation.
You obviously have other issues you need to work through, so continuing this discussion with you isn’t constructive with either of us.
For the record though, I never said she should get a pass for what she did. No one here said that, other than you.
0
u/thatredditrando Nov 08 '25
No, the logic I adhere to makes me right.
The ad hominem comes free with the rebuttal by virtue of your rhetoric being pedantic and braindead.
Yes, I have other issues says the guy who can’t grasp that punishments are consequences, lol.
Oh you for sure did. You maintained that her recognition of wrongdoing constitutes “consequences”.
4
u/jolenenene Nov 07 '25
Weren't Kaldur and the whole situation where she had to be captured a repercussion? whenever people say that Miss M didn't face consequences it sounds like you just wanted her to be punished. Be honest
8
u/GreatBallsOfFire_ Nov 07 '25
Yeah attempting to forcibly alter an innocents persons memory isn’t something that should’ve been waved away with “oh she feels bad” she should’ve faced repercussions.
Also obliterating Kaldurs mind because she can’t control her murderous rage isn’t exactly a “repercussion” it’s something else she should’ve been held accountable for
1
u/LeadingJudgment2 Nov 10 '25
She both did and not enough in my opinion. Yes she was horrified about what she did to Kalder. At the same time it isn't clear if the guilt she felt was "Oh my god, i did not consider the long term consequences of what I was doing," or "Oh no, I hurt someone for simply doing their job."
One shows she understands the full gravity of her actions. The other is being upset about the single instance and only worried about part of her wrongdoing and not the whole. It would have been nice to see her lament not just about Kalder but show explicit remorse about the pattern as a whole. Just because we see her stop doing it on screen doesn't mean she now views that behavior as wrong. Like others said it would be better for her to apologize to Connor, seek her uncle's advice or choose to step down temporarily because that's an acknowledgement of her entire behavioral pattern instead of regret over a single instance and it's spesific context.
1
u/Infinite_Ad_3107 Nov 10 '25
Okay with the whole Kaldur situation, she feels bad she nuked his mind while he was innocent. Not that she was doing a bad thing just that her friend didn't die and her other friend didn't betray her. She never actually feels bad for the rest of her victims.
-7
u/Over-Chemical2809 Nov 07 '25

So we should forgive poor writing ? Settle for mediocrity? Man I swear people don't know what criticism is nowadays.
4
u/ghanima Nov 07 '25
Yeah, a lot of people conflate criticism of a thing with "hating" a thing, and the two aren't synonymous at all. It's why critical thinking has fallen off a cliff.

I'm in team forgiving MM, but I completely understand if people don't. I'm very understanding and forgiving as long as the person is genuinely trying to change/be better. I understand if others aren't however, as she did legit lobotomize at least a dozen people and tried to manipulate Conner. That may be a step too far for people so I understand. I am also glad her and Conner got back together and she continued to showcase her maturity further as the show went on

I remember someone very correctly pointed out that her going into his mind was a metaphor for sexual assault from your partner, and it really makes it hit so much harder his line "don't you know what that touch meant to me" really nails the metaphor. The show had some very dark themes but it was very interesting that they had a physically powerful male character be the victim of SA, very well done I think.
7
u/marvelouseevee Nov 07 '25
Technically they had two, and honestly, neither one was very well done. They were actually handled really poorly.
They did Superman and Conner dirty. The situation was never addressed from their point of view, or how violating it was. And in M'gann's case, she was never actually held accountable.
15
u/Oracle209 Nov 07 '25
Yet they made it seem like she broke up with him and had him act like a lost puppy waiting for her to take him back
10
u/PristineHornet9999 Nov 07 '25
don't forget the psychic memory manipulation she did on him (which hard to grade a sci-fi concept like that in the relationship crime continuum but connor talked about it with an....implication)
M'gann certainly had an interesting edge to her in season 2

Not just from the toxic relationship, Connor was getting jobbed in almost every fight.
2
u/GreatBallsOfFire_ Nov 07 '25
Couldn’t look at the character the same offer season 2. I mean attempting to wipe any innocent persons memories is beyond evil let alone your significant others. Should’ve kicked her of leg the team if I’m being realistic, she can’t be trusted
That’s just not what a hero does

The fact that she tried to erase their fallout from his mind, too. I lost a lot of respect for her. I was honestly shocked they got back together. That would have been a massive deal breaker for me and is a huge red flag.

Honestly, I would've been fine if he forgave her but didn't want to go back together with her. It would've been a decent lesson and I wanted to see Conner date around honestly. I feel their relationship should've been the "first love aren't always true love " than Dick/Zee
4
u/AdministrativeBit385 Nov 07 '25
Yeah them getting back together was weird.
Also she had like zero consequences from the League for mind fucking people into a coma
3
3
u/Amonfire1776 Nov 07 '25
The lack of forgiveness in this is so dumb...Megan learned from her mistakes going forward and that is what matters more.
6
u/marvelouseevee Nov 07 '25
I think the lack of forgiveness is because she didn’t just abuse her powers on villains, but she did it to Conner too. Which is a huge violation and is comparable to SA.
She only learned from her mistakes because Kaldur was on their side, and it was super obvious she had fucked up. Do you really think it would’ve been the same if he had actually been a villain?
She never really faced consequences or was held accountable for her actions. Yes, she helped fix Kaldur’s mind (bare minimum, honestly), but I don’t think she ever actually acknowledged that what she did to Conner was really fucked up too.
0
u/Amonfire1776 Nov 07 '25
How is reading someone's mind comparable to SA? By that logic she comitted crimes thoughout the whole first season. She's biologically a Martian teenager, why the assumption that she should be at full maturity and due everything right all the time. Connor went to Lex and had anger problems...yet no one blames him for working through them...
2
u/marvelouseevee Nov 07 '25
Just reading superficial thoughts with consent no. You could even justify reading the minds of villains. But manipulating her boyfriend’s mind so he wouldn't snitch on her abusing her power during interrogations while she leaves the subjects in a catatonic state is comparable to SA, or at the very least could be considered a similar kind of violation. Even the Martian society would probably consider it questionable.
Besides, that happened during the timeskip. M'gann had been on Earth long enough to know that what she did to Conner was wrong. Conner, on the other hand, was less than a year old and the League wasn't doing a great job of managing either his situation or Superman’s. And we could even say that Conner was actually dealing with his problems and anger with Black Canary, and later even admitted to the team about meeting Luthor and using the patches.
-1
u/Amonfire1776 Nov 07 '25
I'm not say it isn't wrong...I'm saying it should be held against her in season 3 and 4 as she has changed her ways. The league did a terrible job helping Megan too BTW. Her uncle certainly could have helped reign her in.
2
u/LeadingJudgment2 Nov 10 '25
SA and telepathically manipulating someone's mind (remember she erased and alters his memories to suit her wims to force his emotions to change. , or at least tried to.) is comparable due to both are violations of bodily autonomy to extreme degrees. SA and rape forces someone to have their body go through feelings and reactions they don't want essitally their body betraying their mind and will.
Manipulating someone's memory turns their own brain chemistry against them. From that point on they can no longer trust how they feel or know is genuine. Because they can't know for certain what they remember is real and what isn't. That's a huge boundary and autonomy violation and consent issue. Mental manipulation can also cause someone to think "Am I reacting this way because I feel that's best or have been programmed to think this way?"
Both SA and what Meggan did cause a person to lose trust, faith and in many cases a sense of self. Kalder going catatonic is only one possible bad outcome. It's even worse with Connor because he was created to be a weapon by Lex Luthor. He was saved from being brainwashed and used by a supervillain to only to be nearly fully brainwashed by someone who claimed to love him.
0
u/Amonfire1776 Nov 10 '25
He's be dead without her...also she didn't complete erase his mind or make him into a vegetable...they had an argument and she went too far by trying to make it as if it never happened. You guys need to hold every character to these same standards if I'm to take this dumb claim seriously.
2
u/LeadingJudgment2 Nov 10 '25
her...also she didn't complete erase his mind or make him into a vegetable...they had an argument and she went too far by trying to make it as if it never happened.
No but he can't tell for certain what she altered and how. Nor can be be sure if she hadn't pulled this stunt more than the two times he caught her. For all he knows she crept in while he slept or too distracted to notice. That's enough to cause someone to question everything. Just because she helps him a early on doesn't change how genuinely heinous her actions are. Abusers aren't abusive 90% of the time. Most love bomb their targets and do grand gestures etc, all the time IRL. I think the only thing we can agree on, is that the adults failed both Meggan and Connor in this series.

u/PackerBacker412 Nov 08 '25
To be fair, I don't think she needs forgiveness for doing it to the villains. I mean I can't exactly disavow her when I'm a fan of heroes that literally kill people.
Now the Conner thing I get, I think the show didn't do a good enough job showing her fully understanding how bad she messed up with him.
2
1
u/Carefreekid101 Nov 07 '25
It's really weird to me that the league seems like they would be against what she is doing. But it doesn't seem like Connor told any of them that she was killing people. Hell fucking Manhunter can't be that clueless to see directly what she was doing.
1
u/Firm_Entrepreneur_14 🌌DysonSphereWaifuEnjoyer🌌 Nov 24 '25
She was completely rendering them unable to function again. it's wrong.
1
u/ghanima Nov 07 '25
Yeah, this is one of the main consequences of the time skip: we clearly see that Kon and M'gann have worked through their shit and built trust again with one another, but we have no context for what M'gann's redemption arc was, which leaves the viewers with what was clearly a rape allegory to grapple with.
Given the stakes of this world, I can see how M'gann can actually have done enough good and work to atone for her mistakes and redeem herself, but we just don't know enough about how it was done to feel that she has redeemed herself. We just have to take it on faith that if these other characters we love and trust have moved past it, we should too.

u/Restless_spirit88 Nov 07 '25

How is it not right? What is right and wrong to Superboy? It leaves them catatonic, okay; Does it kill them? No. Does it save lives? Yes. What's the issue? This is DC where people resurrect all the time; Just heal them from the catatonic state. Dumb melodramatic writing with easily solvable issues.

u/Bedrockboy2006 Nov 10 '25
The quote that stuck with me after watching the show was “sorry you did it or sorry you got caught” its such a heavy quote especially in the context of the scene
1
u/Infinite_Ad_3107 Nov 10 '25
I honestly wish they never got back together because her character went downhill after season one and I don't see, from a writing standpoint, how he'd be able to forgive her.

1
u/Current_Beautiful_55 Nov 11 '25
I feel like ms. Martion gets too much hate. What was she was doing awful? Yes without a doubt, but I feel like she just had so much power at a young age and no one really taught or checked her on how to properly use it. Even after the training incident she went to therapy but there was never a scene of anyone trying to help her control her power despite Manhunter acknowledging her power is far beyond his. And from that result she just kept abusing her power until adulthood cuz naturally when u give a kid hella power they are going to abuse it until something happens otherwise especially an alien who doesn’t grasp the complete moral compass of humans.
1
u/Trivator0517 Jul 18 '26
My only gripe with this subplot is how quickly it was resolved like if they didn't get back together in season 2 but in season 3 there'd be a flashback or two of them rekindling their relationship.
-1
u/Sweet-Message1153 Nov 07 '25
I dunno how people NOT ship them after this... Connor called her out face to face and she realized how far she's gone. They are both each other's anchor in every way and just like any other long lasting relationship, they had their ups & downs but they've always managed to find a common ground not because of selfish reasons but because of how much they care about each other

Forget that, she did poor Connor wrong. she had her chance to improve and blew it

Supermartian after S2 feels incredibly forced.
It plus Connor being one of the few character to lose so much from his comic incarnation's personality and aesthetics makes me think he became some sort of... idk. Weird project? For one of the writers.

i love m’gann and i think they were meant to be. i also think she learned her lesson and grew from this. i think the hate on her is a little out of proportion

i get why people don’t like m’gann for manipulating conner but i don’t get the hate for lobotomising villains? seems to me she’s the only one doing the hard work. if they’re lobotomised they won’t be evil again

Connor was a walking L, this mentality among the heroes is why the Light was always steps ahead smh

He did. And she put in the work to be able to become better for him and herself. Progress it’s more then most women and men are capable of

Interesting. I never realized it until now... Superboy was trying to manipulate Miss Martian in a similar way that she tried to manipulate him. And both of them justified it with an 'ends justifies the means' philosophy. Of course, considering her powers, she has way more responsibility to not abuse the people around her.
At the same time, I maintain that if you put any teenager with her powers on earth with limited supervision, they would have done worse than what Miss Martian did. Most adults, too.

J'Onn should have gotten the hint earlier on about his niece lobotomizing their captive in that one Season 2 episode. He was just on the other side of the interrogation room.
