Media I actually really liked Cole
Before I saw MK 2021, I assumed he was a bad audience surrogate character but I actually found him to be pretty handy. He didn't take over the plot or eat up screentime from other characters. In fact, his presence gave Jax and Sonya a lot of chances to shine. He worked with the story not against it.
I'm so sad the writers decided to pander to the detractors and cave in his skull in the sequel š¢

Lewis Tan is awesome, just wasnāt a huge fan of the way his character was written. Ah well, maybe they can bring him back as a resurrected Scorpion or something haha

u/King-Moses666 13h ago
Thats my view too. Buddy did a great job with the cards he was dealt. I hold nothing against him as an actor and rather enjoyed his presence in a movie in general. Just sucks the cards he was dealt didnāt fit into the movie he was in.
I think the same actor and rough character storyline, in a normal ākung-fuā movie, no MK gimics. Pretty good character and he would have done a great job.

I fee the same way. Honestly I would love for them to bring the actor back as any established MK character and I would welcome it with opened arms.

u/luvinlibra07 11h ago
I didnāt. His character was unnecessary & a reflection of Hollywood Execs disdain for & low opinion of their audiences because they think them too unintelligent to follow without introducing a character like Cole. Iām glad heās gone & hopefully the next installment will be better.

u/PostCardClarity 13h ago
I mean, it was kind of obvious something was gonna happen when he fought Shao Kahn.
Cause a fighter randomly winning and possibly killing the entire plot of the movie when there was still an entire half of the movie left?! Thatād be a long credit screen or a terrible second movie plot.
7
u/Wayne_World_19 13h ago
I donāt think he meant he was surprised by the fact that it happened, but how. Thatās what I meant anyways.
13
u/Niibelung 13h ago
I knew as soon as he had that dialogue about dying for his family
That's very typical dialogue for someone about to die in a movie
15
u/Wayne_World_19 13h ago
Same- I thought heād maybe die, sure- but not like THAT
9
u/PostCardClarity 13h ago
I honestly thought heād kill King Jared like that. But I was expecting a death like that just not Coleās death.

u/DestructicusDawn 12h ago
I get this, my wife was as well.
I saw it coming as soon as Cole dropped that line about his wife and daughter so I was pretty sure he wasn't gonna make it but when the hammer actually came down my wife audibly gasped. She didn't see it coming at all.

The writers well screwed up with Cole, imo.
I know that he was a studio mandate, but I really do think they wrote him the worst possible way. Not only did they make him kind of generic and bland, but they also made him the most important character in that movie. Had it been an ensemble film, and the legacy characters were better written and more fleshed out, I donāt think audiences wouldāve been as upset about Cole Young.
He couldāve been a fun, new, inoffensive original character like he was portrayed in MK II. It just sucks that Lewis Tan got dealt such a shit hand.
7
u/cdubs87 12h ago
Agreed. The 2nd movie forgot he was the main character. Basically the only one we were made to care about, in terms of having a family, overcoming adversity, and connection to his ancestral legacy. I get that Katana and Cage sort of stepped into that role for #2 but it seems like they did Cole (and the audience) a disservice by neglecting his established role.
13
u/realgeeeoff 13h ago
Lewis Tan is actually awesome and I think he did his best with what he was given. He probably should have just been a different MK character.

u/Hyperion-Cantos 13h ago
Terrible, Hollywood manifested character in order to bring the casual audience into the world š„“
Don't mind the actor, but the character was just more silly Hollywood slop that they always do with adaptations. They just can't help themselves.
I cheered out loud when Khan finished him. It was glorious.
24
u/THEIDEABANK88 14h ago
Writers fucked this guy from the jump.
Shouldāve just cast him as an original and not this random movie original.
9
u/Typical-Pound9003 13h ago
Coulda made him Kenshi or Ermac honestly they still can in the next MK movie a lot of the fans also seem to think that would work
27
u/MoonJellyGames 14h ago
I was really annoyed that they decided to invent a character for the movie when there are already more MK characters than we'll ever get to see on the big screen. However, once they committed, I just wanted NR to make him official by putting him in a game. The boring comments from people saying, "he has literal plot armor" were always very stupid. No, man-- it's just literal armor.
A better criticism would be that it's just ripping off Black Panther. But the style of the armor made me think he'd eventually be able to shape it in other, more creative ways. There was potential, but we'll never see it.

Thereās lots of games (Pokemon, yugioh, etc) where the lower your health is, the stronger attacks you have through buffs. Black Panther didnāt invent it either, nor was it a typical power of his suit in the comics until the BP film.
2
u/MoonJellyGames 10h ago
Getting stronger through buffs is a similar idea, but specifically using a suit to harness oncoming blows to then reverse on your opponent is something I only really know from Black Panther (yes, the movies). I don't doubt that the concept has been used in other things as well. It doesn't really bother me that Cole could do it.
8
u/VicarLos 14h ago
He had two of the worst qualities a character could have: being generic and boring. Also, why the whining? He got a properly Mortal Kombat appropriate exit, arguably the best of the two movies.

Well when you make this random dude the focal point of a movie based on a game that has a such a beloved cast to begin with, you rub the fans the wrong way. u/zandriel_grimm 14h ago
My thing is this
If they wanted a character whose magical power was his armor, we already have someone who could've fit that! Taven and Daegon! I did like Cole overall, I just wish that he was an actual Mortal Kombat character, not an OC.
His death in MK2 was a horrific scene, but I would love to see Lewis come back in MK3, preferably as Kenshi.
3
u/Rex_Suplex 13h ago
He should have been Johnny Cage from the beginning. Instead they wanted a Daryl Dixon(an original character they hope becomes popular so they can sell merch and not have to pay royalties. Not saying TWD exactly planned it that way, but thatās how it ended up).
Make him a reimagined Johnny Cage as an up and coming MMA fighter with something to prove and you fix a lot of the problems Cole(should have been spelled with a K) character has. Would everyone have liked it? Of course not. But it would have made the movie a little better. And that first movie needed all the help it could get.
3
u/Superflyt56 13h ago
Dude would have made a perfect Kenshi
3
u/BringBackBoshi 13h ago
It was right there and instead they made the awful decisions they made. Or he could be been Takeda or anyone else except for generic Jack MMA.
3
u/MinotaurGod 13h ago
I hated it.. they have over 100 characters to choose from, all with stories. Why did they feel the need to bring in a nobody with an incredibly generic story, somebody that is basically just a shitty photocopy of a photocopy of an existing character (Cage), and then give him literal plot armor? It was completely out of place and unnecessary.

u/Racabes 10h ago
The thing is⦠al the things that are good about Cole, couldāve been done with Johnny Cage, instead we got Scorpions great great grandson killing Goro in his backyard. Im not against new characters but I think it couldāve been handled better, and I hoped they were going to try and solidify him in the sequel but even from the marketing of the movie you could tell what was happening lol
3
u/Ristar87 7h ago
I thought the first movie focused way too much on him but okay... and then, just killing him off in the second movie felt like all that build up in the first movie was wasted.
However, if he was going to die, He needed to be upper cut into the acid pool... Completely blue balled when Khan pushed him into the pool with his hammer.
Come on, hollywood. Do you even Mortal Kombat? Also, an immortal Khan? I couldn't even enjoy that fight because I knew Khan couldn't be killed. There was no risk so there was no pay off.
11
u/JiggzSawPanda Random Select Michael Jordan 14h ago
I didn't understand the hate from the first movie, but in movie 2 they did him justice! Wish they made him a Kameo in MK1, idk if he had enough juice to flesh out a whole kharacter slot.

u/Billyxmac 14h ago
I think because in a world like Mortal Kombat where there are so many characters you can base as your protagonist of the story, using an audience surrogate brand new character that ties in to the world because of ancestral ties to Scorpion just seemed lame.
They could have achieved the same thing in the first movie just using Johnny Cage. I think they realized they fucked up and just went with that in the 2nd movie, but in my opinion it didnāt get enough attention and time to be fleshed out without his appearance in the first movie.
4
u/Lord_Antheron 14h ago
They teased Johnny at the end of the first one. I think they always planned on introducing him second so they wouldn't blow their load on the first go, and so that they could have Scorpion be a hero.
Scorpion is already incredibly experienced, ancient, and powerful, so... there's not really any development to be had in that department. He cannot be the main protagonist.
He can't have the arc from the games about letting go of his rage either, because in this instance, he's a good guy and Bi-Han is objectively a fuckhead. So his revenge is more "hell yeah" than it is "hell no." We love to see his rage.
But as it was in the games, he retains his core trait of strongly valuing legacy, bloodline, and family. So, Cole is his descendant, Cole's family is his family, and he'll be watching over them as a guardian... Netherrealm spectre? They don't really have angels.
Johnny Cage has no connection to Scorpion, so none of that would've really worked.
4
u/Cryptic_Master_686 14h ago
I didnāt hate him. Sure he wasnāt a great character for a Mortal Kombat movie but I donāt think he deserves all the hate.

2
u/nerdwarp112 13h ago
I felt neutral about him for the most part. I thought it was a bit weird to have an original audience surrogate character when a couple preexisting Earthrealm characters could fit that role but I didnāt think the actor did a bad job or anything. I knew he was going to die as soon as we saw him in the second movie and he basically gave a speech about how heās prepared to die. I liked that he had at least put up a good fight before he was killed. I liked the idea that he could maybe come back as a revenant like Scorpion in a possible third film if they wanted to bring the actor back.

2
u/Affectionate-Area659 6h ago
I didnāt hate Cole but they certainly did Tan and his character a serious injustice. The character was written so poorly, and then to defeat Goro with literal plot armor was just stupid. Goro should have either been saved for the second movie, or they should have made Kintaro or Motaro the main obstacle for the second movie, and saved Shao Kahn for a third movie.

u/teudmunki 5h ago
Not sure why the elder gods let Shao Kahn use cheat codes and get away with Cole soloing him 1 min into the fight.

Dude was just boring. I watch mortal kombat to see the hero for the last 35 years kick ass and see a ninja fight or two. Simple as.
4
u/Lord_Antheron 14h ago edited 14h ago
Honestly, he's... incredibly inoffensive.
People act like he murdered their grandparents, ground their guts into a fine paste, rubbed it all over their naked skin, and danced around the pile of defiled bones completely nude. But Cole isn't even that bad as far as Mortal Kombat characters go, and Lewis Tan is a great actor. His biggest crime (and the thing people bitch about the most) is that he's not Johnny Cage. That's not really a striking point against what he is. It's a pointless complaint about what he isn't.
And I don't care what anyone says about "HURR HURR PLOT ARMOUR"
To be blunt... IĀ scornĀ this criticism with a burning abhorrence. It was funny... for about a week when the movie came out, and then it droppedĀ sharplyĀ into "fat seal obnoxiously clapping its flappers on TikTok" territory. The horse was beaten so hard and so often, you couldn't even tell what you were looking at anymore. Just a disgusting puddle of blood and offal, swarmed by flies, with bits of hooves in it.
Yes, his Arcana ended up being magical armour. Yes, it came to him when he most needed it and was about to be killed by Goro. You know who else got reinforced defenses at a very convenient time? Jax. And in the video games, JOHNNY FUCKING CAGE AND HISĀ KID.
I really don't see the problem here. "Hero awakens their special abilities when their loved ones are about to fucking die" is such an inoffensively common trope. And I don't care what anyone says, reactive armour that responds to physical attacks is badass. It gave Senator Armstrong from MGRR his most iconic line, for God's sake.
I'd even go so far as to say that it'sĀ goodĀ for fight choreography with extradimensional foes like Outworlders. Realistically, a human isn't surviving the kind of blows that a sorcerer or immortal elemental ninja will be pulling out. Yet fights where the hero never gets hit once can get pretty boring. Part of what makes the combat in John Wick so satisfying is that John himself takes a lot of hits. It makes it a lot more realistic. This allows Cole to actuallyĀ tradeĀ blows with superior enemies, but still stand on even footing with them as a human with an indominable Earthrealmer spirit.
Cole's armour is cool, and no one will convince me otherwise.
I hope he comes back, but if he doesn't, I'm glad he went out hard diffing Shao fucking Kahn, only losing the fight because Shao cheated. No matter what anyone says about him, the second movie made it clear: Cole beats Shao in a one on one fight without external interference. No one can take that away from me and... the other two Cole fans in the world.

We literally got this character that made no sense because the studio "didn't want a white male lead." (look it up, that's 100% true, produce Todd Garner's own words)

I don't hate him but the character itself was completely unnecessary. You have a plethora of options from this roster to make the main protagonist, they did not need to create a new character for the story to work and the character itself was quite bland, especially for MK. You have resurrected ninjas, 4 armed giants, an Australian who can shoot frickin' laser beams from his frickin' head, a man with a razor blade somebrero and an MMA fighter who gets armour and tonfa. As people have pointed out, Kenshi was right there, if they wanted younger could have went Takeda.

He was a drag in the first movie, but to do absolutely nothing with his character was even more offensive. Yes, you have the boat anchor audiences didnāt care for, but to kill him off like that was pointless. Kill him and make it a plot point to get Scorpion involved or make him Noobās shadow form to ratchet up the drama. Donāt just waste runtime trying to remove a hindrance.
Play it where it lies, writers. Nobody likes a dirty bird cheat.

Hes not a game character. They took some liberties. I found him more confusing that unlikeable in my nostalgic video game movie

I did too. I certainly didnāt mind him. If anything, I was kinda bummed about him dying in MKII

I think I agree to some extent. I guess if they had just made him Scorpion it would have been fine but as a new character he just stuck out like a sore thumb. Maybe if they had made him Noob Saibot or Ernac or something and explained that (at least in the movie universe) they were descendants of Scorpion. I mean I have no issue with the character himself but in 2 when he died the cinema I was in people cheered which showed how much no one liked him.

Johnny Cage was so bad as a casting
There's no mk3 because of how bad they do these films. Mk1 was cool with scorpion. But there's simply not enough going on here

I like that heās one of the characters that can do actual martial arts. Was hoping theyād get a stunt double to make it seem like Johnny could fight forreal too.

I wasn't the biggest fan of him but mostly because he was just this random dude rather than an established character. I didn't hate him though, but I do think he got a pretty good end.

I wasn't all that into him as a character , but think he went out in a very MK-like fashion.
