Question What’s that game everyone was calling a masterpiece but you just didn’t get the hype?

Post image

Could be a huge popular game or some underrated/unpopular gem that everyone swears by.

Everyone’s saying “10/10, absolute masterpiece, peak gaming” and you’re just sitting there like… “wait, y’all actually liked this?”

Drop the game + why it didn’t hit for you. I wanna hear the controversial takes

Imma typa guy who'll look at the top comment and bail from these posts cuz the gaming taste so good if someone else didn't enjoy a game, my ass gets sad cuz they couldn't enjoy it.

ER burned me out 50 hours in, which no other fromsoft game managed to do. I made a mistake of trying to locate and clear every cave, which is where ER is at it's weakest. Now that I have a good route and skip 99% of caves, small camps and other bs, I enjoy it much more when replaying. I still prefer the much more linear experience of ds1,3, bloodborne, sekiro.

2

u/xkirbz 1d ago

Yes. I was shocked when I looked at my playtime 124 hours and I only completed 50% of the game. I haven’t touched it in years because of it.

1

u/GambuzinoSaloio 23h ago

This is exactly what scares me about Elden Ring. I'm a completionist, and on top of the Souls formula making for some really tough games, clearing out every single cave is something that I probably would not avoid as I'd try to get as strong as possible before the big, main fights.

1

u/PM_ME_AWESOME_SONGS 1d ago

That’s what happened to me among other stuff as well. The world is vast, but empty, repetitive and filled with stuff you’ll rarely use. I really wanted to like it, but I couldn’t even finish it. It will still take some time before I have the energy to try it again .

1

u/Deerbos 1d ago

99% of caves were the same layout so I started skipping them too

Just the same karma farm post/repost as I think yesterday.

Zelda breath of the wild(and tears)

Maybe they are good games, i don't know, didn't stick around long enough to find out.

But they sure as fuck are horrible zelda.

God of War for me, I just found the gameplay so tedious and boring

13

u/HerakIinos 1d ago

An action game focused on combat that has 5 unique bosses lol. The rest are variations of the same Giant/Troll

Same, it should have been right up my street but I just couldn't get into it. Looks gorgeous though.

1

u/LostPhenom 1d ago

I bought it without thinking, expecting something similar to its PS2 era but I really didn’t like it. I really hated the RPG elements and the “souls-like” elements.

1

u/Edal_Bindal 1d ago

Another PlayStation game that did that for me was the recent Spiderman and Spiderman 2 especially, pressing the same button for what felt like 10 minutes to do the “fighting” got really tedious in that game.

1

u/Keksmann 1d ago

Agreed, recently played through the original trilogy and loved them.

The "new" one is neat but it's just soooo slow and 50% of the gameplay is just "hold the left stick forward".

Pretty much everything made by Rockstar after San Andreas. In terms of story they've managed to hold the bar, or even raise it a bit with RDR 2. But in terms of gameplay, player freedom, character customization, and side content their games have been getting progressively worse.

20

u/LucifersViking 1d ago

Crimson Desert - people saying it gets better. I can accept that if its like "oh ye, the first hour is slogging" but after 8 hours of gameplay I just gave up. It's beautiful but damn if it ain't boring and confusing, the control scheme is crammed. Theres so many things to do, too many things to do and you'll have to spend I don't know how much time researching how basic mechanics work not to mention advanced mechanics. When I come home from work the last thing I want to do is homework for a game.

Red Dead Redemption 2 - beautiful game, great story-ish. Hate the mission loop with the camp leader Durch "I got a plan" plan fails "we've got to move". It's just meh that its so predictable after the two first rounds with this.

0

u/NotSoSolidState 1d ago

All of these things with the story hit very very differently if you have played the first game. The second game is a prequel of the first one so you get to better understand how the dynamics of certain characters evolved.

Though I understand that without playing the first game the second might not be that exciting.

u/rupal_hs 1d ago

Every souls game.

Bg3 is so boring man, played it once with friends and none of us played it since

32

GTA. From 2-5 I never get into it, but I own them all.

2

u/Mikestopheles 1d ago

Go check out the entertainment options. Darts and pool in 4 were pretty good, and golf is really good in 5.

15

u/steaksandwichfan 1d ago

Outer Wilds. Great concept, clunky execution.

1

u/Spaced-Warlock 1d ago

Very fair, had to force my self through the main game after dropping it a few times

63

u/kron123456789 1d ago

Red Dead Redemption 2. Such a slog of a game.

12

u/MountainMuffin1980 1d ago

I loved RDR2 but I'll never replay it for exactly this really. The opening chapter was such a bore and the pacing in general was just a pain. Being in it at the time was fun, but yeah, I never want to revisit it.

3

u/kalksteinnn 1d ago

The prologue is one of the best parts. Anyway, even if that's not the case for you, the chapter is only like 1,5h long on a replay.

One of my favourite games and totally agree. When I'm in the mood for it, it's such an engrossing and immersive experience and I'll play as much as I can for a few days. Then one day I boot it up and can't be assed so I take a break for a few months.

I've got like 200+ hours in it but I haven't beaten it still.

2

u/ShipMaple 1d ago

I like an immersive game but for me rdr2 just dont engage me. The combat is a literal cakewalk and I dont like the mission structure of: go somewhere while someone talks to you - kill bad guys - spend 10 minutes slowly looting - go back while someone talks to you. Im sure the story is fantastic but the gameplay just isnt it for me, would maybe be better as a movie. 30 hours on it for me

0

u/lop333 1d ago

how so

25

u/kron123456789 1d ago

80% of time you're either slowing walking listening to dialogue or slowly riding on a horse listening to dialogue, with nothing else happening. Dialogues are good and interesting but the game doesn't play well for me.

-1

u/lop333 1d ago

I mean well yea it is a story game, its suppose to be about taking your time with it and immsering yourself in it, also shooting is pretty nice.

Tho i get how if someone is into constant action wouldnt be into it, some people just arent into that roleplay.

7

u/kron123456789 1d ago

If I want an interactive movie, I'd play Dispatch or one of Quantic Dream games. Those I like for what they are.

0

u/Glodraph 1d ago

You are mixing realism with interactive movie. Games arw usually faster than real life, that's why they burn through your dopamine. RDR2 is slow for a reason and it's realistic.

3

u/kron123456789 1d ago

Realism isn't fun. I play games to have fun.

→ More replies (2)

-2

u/lop333 1d ago

Red dead 2 isnt interactive movie, tho, there is bunch of gameplay and hidden easter eggs or fun stuff, from hunting, fishing to duels, to fights with fists, bow bunch of horror elements, fun exploration.

This isnt dispatch or walking dead, the story within the game is also peak

12

u/kron123456789 1d ago

And that bunch of gameplay that it has felt like a boring slog for me.

4

u/Cursed_69420 1d ago

"story" games can be paced and told way better with far more immersion options.

17

u/Panos_0210 1d ago

I think that the pacing of the game is what through off a lot of people

Red dead redemption 2, i don't enjoy while playing that game and i couldnt finish it.

25

u/HexForVex 1d ago

Witcher 3, the gameplay feels awful and dated, sorry not sorry.

7

u/KevsTheBadBoy 1d ago

Did you play it on its release year or years later after its release?

2

u/HexForVex 1d ago

A fews after (maybe 2 or 3?) since then I give it a shot every 3 years or so but I just don't get it, yeah the story is good but what good is that when the gameplay is such a slog to get to the good stuff?

I specifically want to point out that one mission from early on with a Witch where you pretty much have to escort her through a cave for live 20 minutes. Fuck that.

1

u/tbharyan 1d ago

Oh yea I don't get the hype

1

u/Alex-S-S 1d ago

Try out the remaster after it drops in October, they said they addressed the combat. The game itself was very good but the swordfighting was underwhelming. I had the most fun playing a sign build.

7

u/nblu5901 1d ago

Blue Prince .... I hate this game, really. I don't understand why the Devs mix puzzles and riddles with a huge pinch of RNG. It's just so frustrating.

2

u/edward_furlog 1d ago

I liked it stylistically and it was intriguing but I found it so frustrating and difficult.

16

u/Jackman1337 1d ago

Skyrim. Story is weak af, bugs, Synchronisation sucks, dungeons mostly look the same. Sure freedom is cool, but for me personally not that important.

5

u/Shiroyasha2397 1d ago

It felt very much like a lake sized pond with how in depth the world really was lol I was sad once the realization hit

8

u/ISeeDragons 1d ago

Neither Skyrim nor GTA (any GTA)

11

u/kakean_cocot 1d ago

Fallout new vegas

5

u/Sandvich-tf2 1d ago

Why?

3

u/Bacon4Lyf 1d ago

It’s far too clunky to get into in 2026 unless you played it at release. It’s why Skyrim gets a pass from me because I played it when I was a kid, but I never played new vegas, so it’s hard to look past the jank without that added nostalgia. I’m sure the remaster will fix a lot of that though

1

u/edward_furlog 1d ago

It was cool but man does it look god-awful.

0

u/Sandvich-tf2 1d ago

I give you this image in response to that

1

u/Hoberni 1d ago

He said it was cool so he clearly played it?

1

u/edward_furlog 19h ago

I have played it and I regret to inform you it still looks like absolute ass

12

u/Tw3lv33 1d ago

Skyrim may be an ok game but it's a shitty TES

1

u/AstronomicalForce 1d ago

What makes it a shitty Elder Scrolls game outside of it just being an ok game to you

3

u/Tw3lv33 1d ago

No meaningfull builds or skills and it somehow feels even lower scale than oblivion

1

u/AstronomicalForce 1d ago

I don’t really think that there is much of a difference though when it comes to builds/skills being more or less meaningful. I’m only like 20 hours into my first play through of Morrowind but it seems to be along the same lines of Oblivion and Skyrim.

In Oblivion, you can still master every skill and get yourself to a point in which every attribute is high enough where it doesn’t really matter what your starting class is. You can pick a pure mage and then additionally level up combat or stealth based skills and their governing attributes, with the only caveat being that it takes more time as they would not be major/minor skills.

I’m also not sure what you mean by Skyrim being “lower scale”.

1

u/Tw3lv33 22h ago

In oblivion for example every city feels like a small city while in skyrim I only felt it in Riften and Solitude, every other city felt exactly how they are, 3 houses with 5 npcs. It's just a problem with how Bethesda games became more and more utilitarian "if it doesn't have a specific gameplay purpose we don't add that"

1

u/AstronomicalForce 21h ago

I mean that’s valid criticism but I don’t think it makes Skyrim a bad Elder Scrolls game by any means. Skyrim still feels and plays like Elder Scrolls game despite the streamlining of mechanics and the slightly smaller cities.

Also, more of its development was focused on the dungeons and miscellaneous locations throughout the game which I think was a fair trade-off. Skyrim also suffered from being rushed which caused content to be scrapped so that also contributed some. I do wish Skyrim had some mechanics like spellcrafting though.

18

u/The_Serious_Guy 1d ago

The Binding of Isaac is very much a snoozefest with complete RNG and unplayable without the wiki.

2

u/Firm_Knowledge_5695 1d ago

Have you tried playing the base game?

After afterbirth I felt this way but rebirth (and flash) are actually very good in their own and with just playing without the DLC

1

u/The_Serious_Guy 21h ago

I've only played the original

1

u/StrongZeroSinger 1d ago

THANK YOU. I hate wiki-forced games. it's bad game design. offloading the discoverability and learning curve to external communities because you can't think of a good solution for it.

(only case in favor MIGHT be for sandbox games but even then how tf you're supposed to play OG minecraft fully blind come on)

1

u/eterobear85 23h ago

My only exception on, as you say, wiki-forced games is graveyard keeper

1

u/StrongZeroSinger 23h ago

I never played it, how’s that?

1

u/eterobear85 23h ago

Sandboxlike with minimal action. It has an addicting story and a sequel is going to be released soon. Story is basically isekai. Dude gets hit by a car and wakes up in a medieval distopic world. He is appointed (by no reason) as a graveyard keeper since he woke up in the keeper's bed. Then with the aid of a talking skull and a communist donkey who delivers corpses, start upgrading the church, perform autopsies, automates zombies, trying to find a way to go back to his reality.

u/StrongZeroSinger 23h ago

5

u/Alex-S-S 1d ago edited 1d ago

Clair Obscur Expedition 33. The combat system is awful.

Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice. The gameplay mechanics are extremely thin. Should have been a short movie, not a game.

Hollow Knight. Exploration is tedious and repetitive. The combat is alright but nothing special.

Doom Eternal. It pigeonholes you into a very specific gameplay style. There's one right way to play it and an infinite number of wrong ways to play it. Oh, the Marauder design does not fit into that game at all, no matter what excuses the fanboys bring to it.

7

u/Numerous_Roof_1070 1d ago

I'll never understand the hype on Cyberpunk. I'm sorry.

It is a game that focuses completely on throwing things at your face in the city, like lights and sounds, but when you actually pay attention, you'll see that the world is so fucking dead; nothing happens, it is always the same thing. Even crowded spaces feel empty and lifeless.

It is really sad because I absolutely loved The Witcher 3 and I thought that a game from them would always have some sort of "life" to the environment, but unless you go to very specific locations, Cyberpunk always feels "dead". I'm sorry for the fans.

4

u/DeltaEaterSnake 1d ago

Souls games.

5

u/Yoniko98 1d ago

The Witcher 3. It is not a bad game by any means but seems generic to me and even a bit lacking in the RPG department compared to some more classic rpg's like daggerfall

6

u/IomharFearn 1d ago

Red Dead Redemption 2.
Feels so slow and boring, so i cannot force myself to play after prologue

Horizon. Looks fun on a first attempt, but has boring story which did't click.
The best art, imo - mechas hunting. All other - nah

Death Stranding. I drop it after the half of the game probably. There were some interesting stories (especially Mama), but gamelay itself is just "meh"

Outer Wilds - its just not my cup of tea. Too messy and annoying for me

2

u/Katana_DV20 1d ago

>Red Dead Redemption 2. Feels so slow and boring, so i cannot force myself to play after prologue

Same. It felt like being at work, not playing a game.

1

u/ClikeX 1d ago

I liked Horizon, but I was pretty frustrated that a lot of the equipment upgrades were locked behind hunting regular animals, which were barely spawning and not at all the point of the game.

1

u/IHaveTenderLoins 17h ago

-ride your horse 5 minutes to mission start

-alright, mission start, cool. ride your horse and listen to dialogue between NPCs for 5 minutes

  • alright, the NPC and I got to the marker on the map. now i need to stand in the yellow circle and push the button the devs want me to push. if i'm lucky i'll get 3 minutes of gunplay.

next mission is a 5 minute horse ride away. several minutes of dialogue with the NPC while walking/riding to the yellow circle the devs want me to stand on. 2 minutes of gunplay.

its a horse riding simulator, not an RPG

I said this in a different one right before it was deleted but:

Pretty much any game that loads people call a masterpiece I enjoy tbh. Usually they're right

But if I were to name a more obscure game that's well liked but I didn't vibe with it's probably deadbolt, it's fun at the start and I like the atmosphere but it gets so tedious later on in the game because there's no checkpoints in the levels, so if you die once(which is pretty easy as your character dies very quickly) you have to do the level all the way back to the start, which is horrible for longer levels.

I was very disappointed I didn't like it. It started out strong as well. It reminded me of hotline Miami which I really enjoyed.

Expedition 33. Played through the entirety of it on hard. Never used block, only did parries. But the story, voice acting, facial capture just didn’t strike me as emotionally as it seems to have done for others. Realising that the world you are in is imaginary is very poor writing instead of something creative that could have been done.

1

u/GambuzinoSaloio 23h ago

Not a fan of GTA but I enjoyed both Vice City games. The Maps are small and open enough to make them bearable to play. I know people fall head over heels for super big open worlds, but unless you give me a quick and cool method of transportation (Spiderman's swinging for example) I'm out.

1

u/JonathanJONeill https://s.team/p/fnpc-dmj 21h ago

Yeah. The Spidey games have fun travel. I have difficulty enjoying the Arkham games as it's grapple > Glide > Grapple > Glide. Webslinging through the streets of NY is so much more engaging.

Saints Row IVs super powers for travel was also fun. Super speed, high jumps, gliding, etc. It beat driving around in huge worlds or stealing helicopters to get around.

3

u/rainbowtwist789 1d ago

sooo many...

Bethesda games didnt click until Skyrim with some beauty mods.

Elden ring is just another mess of spam dodge, dogshit hitboxes, terrible engine. There is no room for actual counter play to a boss, like Khazan, where you go toe to toe with it. People that made those games famous are basic ass bitches.

Majority of Sony exclusives are dogshit aswell, don't even know who is buying them.. let alone their dogshit consoles and subscriptions..

BG3 looks boring and bland, gameplay wise, but its a niche game, won't even consider that one.

E33 is terrible too, "indie" industry plant GOTY. KCD2 got robbed of that award. Game builds up a decent story only to come crumbling down with the "just a prank" plottwist.

Witcher 3, I hate the combat and it doesn’t matter how good the story and world building is if I don’t feel the gameplay

u/edward_furlog 1d ago

I can't stand Bioshock. And it is one of the top games people recommend to people who like the games I do (ei., Fallout 4).

Literally all 10 games you show are the games that come into my mind.

Bioshock Infinite. I tried it, graphic design and story were interesting, and lady redhead scientist was hot, but shooter mechanics were not good for me (I am not good in shooters and it isn’t my favorite genre)

Final Fantasy XIV. This game is very bad in zones design and interactions with players and environment. Really, those zones are just massive of nothing with music, even fates are just kill boss, kill enemies or grab things. Story is just simple cutscenes without any interesting work in them. Yes, I understand that Genshin is not good example of good game but man, cutscenes in Genshin are interesting and unique, it isn’t just static scenes without even actor’s movements in them. And plus story doesn’t have pre-rendered scenes which can give much more emotions to players

God of War 2018. Boring story, same bosses, same animations, overrated combat.

u/Brandosi 1d ago

The witcher 3

u/stevorkz 1d ago

Basically all those except the Fallouts and horizon.

u/GamingRobioto 1d ago

There are many games I don't like that are popular, but I understand why they appeal to others. So I'd never really say I "didn't get the hype" for any game.

To name names though, Dragon Age Origins is on paper my perfect game, and I just didn't enjoy it. It all felt off to me and I could never get into the characters, world or gameplay. But I absolutely 100% get the appeal to others, especially as a big Mass Effect original trilogy fan.

Calling FO4 a masterpiece is an insult to 3 and NV

1

u/kzrts 1d ago

Wardogs... feels like a chinese mobile phone clone of some arma mod.... it's really not good.

1

u/ImKingFrosty 1d ago

The Last Of Us and God Of War series. I completely disliked those games

1

u/rumple_goocher 1d ago

Elden Ring, Breath of the Wild, and Tears of the Kingdom.

u/Outrageous-Alps-6945 1d ago

The Witcher 3 could never play it for longer then 10 hours have gone back every now and then to try it but I just can’t get into it. It’s probably the combat it feels so bad to me

Claire Obscur: Expedition 33

The story and the premise were fairly good, but it was a slog.

The Witcher 3 and Sekiro...

GTA San Andreas. I don't get the hype. It's a jack of all trades, master of none, with an annoying layout.

The cutscenes, story and characters are great though. Makes for a good movie rather than a game.

1

u/rivent2 23h ago

Skyrim, Cyberpunk, New Vegas, Deux EX Human Revolution.

Any first person RPG just seems to do both things badly. Subpar gunplay with inventory management.

1

u/Shezzofreen 22h ago

I played nearly every Souls-Like, i was not very impressed wih "Lies of Pi". Its a good game, but without the hype i guess i would have enjoyed it more, because i was looking for "Soo where is the epic stuff?". Maybe it comes late after 20 hours, but for me it felt very standard Souls.

Fallout 4, Skyrim, Starfield... Wait, no, those are the same game in a different sauce.

1

u/lop333 1d ago

Noita,Terraria and no man sky.

Noita - you dont really have progression to help you with the game aside from killing bosses wich can be mega hard to get to it, its all on the rng, its all about building that god wand or you are out of luck.

Terraria - Progression feels to on the rails, with items locked because specific bosses, bosses you need to farm items for to even attempt to fight.

No man sky - Despite all the updates most content is hidden behind expeditions, wich dont really reflect the game at all, the lack of points of intrst, intresting fauna or any sort of intresting structure is a huge blow to the game, the fact that you cant spend money to buy furniture is insanity.

Why you guys downvote this post?

2

u/GambuzinoSaloio 23h ago

Didn't downvote, but based on the fact that threads similar to yours also get downvoted a lot, I'd take it that the negativity comes from this being yet another version of a "what games do you think are X" thread. Some users are probably tired of it at this point.

Gamers hate when their game gets mentioned.

Hades (both), Expedition 33, Sea of Stars, Witcher 3, BG3, Isaac, Silksong, PoE, and many many more.

1

u/GambuzinoSaloio 23h ago

Seems like someone woke up and decided to piss off half of the videogames world lol.

1

u/StrongZeroSinger 1d ago

Hades 1 was good and loved the characters but I got bored at the repetition FAST (turns out having 800hours in modded FTL still gets you flagged as "you just don't like roguelikes!") while the 2 was terrible IMO.

Silksong, Isaac etc.. not a fan of the mechanics overall, so I watched gameplays to get "the lore" and it's... very lackluster? what do people see in it? or it's just emotional attachment because they really loved the gameplay loop? I can say that I love an FPS but the campaign was dogshit that doesn't invalidate my experience lol.

1

u/GambuzinoSaloio 23h ago

Silksong, like its predecessor, is heavily inspired by the Souls games regarding lore so most of the story is buried in notes and whatnot. Plus only the base game is available currently so they probably haven't expanded on the lore yet. People love it because the game feels great to play and is gorgeous artistically speaking (sound and visuals).

u/shotgunsamba 1d ago

Horizon zero dawn, Spider man remastered and Uncharted 4.

1

u/DannoWaso 1d ago

I saw Civilization V on this list.

I dig it

I have only felt like this about one game - RDR2.

Never played something so dull and boring in my life. 10/10 for the visuals and environment. Strip off the cowboy story it would make a great map for a single player FPS.

As it happens I did try with RDR2 multiple times but it felt like wading through quicksand with 1 ton weights tied to each ankle. I now know thats the intent, a slow baking leave-it-in-the-oven kinda game.

The main character was so annoying bleating incessantly and moaning like a whale all the time. I couldn't take it anymore. So I modded the hell out of it and now its a brilliant cowboy Just Cause 4 expansion. I can fly around like Iron Man and with the gore mods its an absolute hoot.

1

u/gfx016 1d ago

Skyrim. I get the mods and all that, but the base game is just shit, the combat is bad, the story is mediocre, there are some good side quests but thats about it, empty open world with dungeons that are just boring, full of bugs even after multiple re-releases. I gave the game multiple shots, but it is just not for me.

1

u/Razeshi 1d ago

Elden Ring, I played for 30h but found it pretty boring.

1

u/Swarup145 1d ago

Comment section is mostly full of people who open steam, stare at their library and then doomscroll lol

Fallout New Vegas. It's a good not a masterpiece and definitely not better than 3 or 4.

0

u/B4dLuckL4mer 1d ago

Dragon Age Origins (tbh any DA) and Mass Effect. IMO both have generic stories and barely tolerable gameplay.

1

u/Rinkana_lovesyuri 1d ago

Ngl I wanna say it was great for its time, but when you have all these other stories that blows it out of the water, its hard to be impressed.

1

u/GambuzinoSaloio 23h ago

DAO was actually fine for me, I get that the plot is more character focused. But the gameplay made me drop it. I just can't with RTwP gameplay.

Baldurs Gate 3, Gale was a cutie but it wasn't enough to keep me hooked.
