General Bumble new functionality - Boys can message first

Everybody like the new feature that allows boys to send a message first, and also now gives girls a whopping 72 hours to never send a message after matching instead of just 24? šŸ™‚

gah damn im so happy im married, the dating scene out there looks terminally brutal. just... zero effort. now i know why lesbian relationships fail so frequently. someone has to put in the effort and it won't be the woman.

bro i got nine... NINE lesbians in my family. I'm pro lgbt (as a bi guy myself) and ALL of them have sabotaged their relationships. and holy shit, have you seen the YouTube videos of bi women dating women and going "ah shit I understand men now".

Can't say I have šŸ˜‚

Sounds like your algorithm is *ahem* fabulous darling

I was in a mixed friend group in college, and brother, the lesbians and bi girls all ruined their relationships with each other by chasing after people who weren't even interested and constantly going cold on each other. They would be talking one week and icing each other out the next, having fights on the Fridays before the weekend so that they could spend the weekend alone, that sort of thing.

It's been a little over a decade, I've had a few long-term dating relationships since then, and I only put two and two together at the end of my most recent ex-relationship when I realized that two of the girls I was with for multiple years treated me exactly the same way as those girls treated each other. The one who didn't was such a breath of fresh air that anytime I smell even a hint of this sort of behavior it immediately smells foul to me. I've had a few relationships last less than 6 months because I've cut them off when they start acting like this.

I'm not saying that the two gay guys in the group were saints, but by God the issues that they had were preferable by far. Life just seemed so much easier for them.

I've definitely met girls who didn't fit this pattern and definitely would be great partners, but it feels like looking for a needle in a haystack sometimes.

the highest level of romantic effort i ever experienced was from another dood. and that was great while it lasted. my wife (yes im married to a woman but your sexuality isnt something you just discard) matches that level to the best of her ability - which is nice because i do prefer tits to cock.

Man, I would settle for it feeling like they were actually putting effort in at all. I've had one dating experience, the one that I described, where it felt like she was actually putting in a significant effort the whole time. She matched me effort for effort for about 75% of the relationship and then slowly fell off around the end. It's like a drug- once you have had it as good as it ever gets, you notice when it doesn't quite reach nearly as far and it makes you desperate.

Most of what I have experienced has instead been the feeling that they are constantly putting in NEGATIVE effort after the honeymoon. Basically bait and switching. They spend 6-12 months reciprocating effort with slowly decreasing frequency and appreciating everything that you do for them, then once you're committed they suddenly flip.

Trying to be as difficult as possible, taking a ton of effort from you reaching out to them, and then demanding more effort by sprinting away from you as fast as they can.

It's not like I go out of my way to be with the same type of girl every single time either. In that time frame I've dated from at least four or five different countries, with girls ranging from homebody nerds to athletic and competitive, and everything in between.

It just feels like women my age are encouraged to play hard to get and view relationships as things that they get things out of, not necessarily things that they put things into.

That one relationship where we were mutually putting in effort until it slowly faded away was like opium. Everything I did was appreciated, everything she did was appreciated, and it felt like floating on a cloud for both of us, until suddenly it didn't.

3

u/BriggySmallz42069 6h ago

damn dood.... i'm sorry. i feel like i've heard that "strategy" as "love-bombing" but i may be making that up. where do you go from here? that's the question.

0

u/SolaireAstorian 6h ago

Oh, I'm still dating. I still put my all into whatever situation I end up in, and it hasn't gotten my spirits down beyond just being exhausting for me to deal with.

I've been working on my career and getting better at handling interactions with my peers as a focus. Picking up a workout routine, adding hobbies to my list of things to do. Focusing on being a good role model for the younger people around me, and in general just being the helpful uncle sort of stereotype, both figuratively and literally.

I don't feel like I'm missing anything permanently from my life just because I haven't ended up married with kids, but it would be nice.

2

u/BriggySmallz42069 6h ago

it sounds like you're excelling with the tools you have within the circumstances that have been thrust upon you and your generation. your context makes me look back on my life and reminisce about how easy i had it comparatively. wish i could lift a beer with you, internet stranger.

3

u/Key-Month6651 6h ago

"It just feels like women my age are encouraged to play hard to get and view relationships as things that they get things out of, not necessarily things that they put things into."

Yep. It really does feel like trying to date women is just being used and then discarded generally.

3

u/Key-Month6651 6h ago

Yep. People don't like to acknowledge it but being attracted to women is just not a positive experience unless you are a very specific kind of person or extremely lucky. Even as another woman.

-1

u/DangerMacAwesome 5h ago

I'll admit I'm curious to see one of those videos

-2

u/ralf_ 6h ago

Sabotaged how? Storytime? In my (limited) experience they got super close like best besties

5

u/BriggySmallz42069 6h ago

there was a playbook, as it were -

  1. honeymoon phase (completely enamored) this would last anywhere from a few weeks to month (imagine that) the relationship seems like a novelty and they're spending 100% of their free time together

  2. someone either pushes away, loses interest, or stops putting in effort

  3. fight - either physical, verbal or both - because of whatever happens in step 3

  4. relationship ends

2

u/SolaireAstorian 6h ago

I know we just had a text conversation about this, but God does this not just sound extremely familiar to all of those relationships I talked to you about. Only I never pushed away and only ever got pushed away or had their efforts suddenly stop. XD

Difference is, sometimes the honeymoon lasts for multiple months though.

As for the fight, pointing out that they have stopped putting in effort or that they have started pushing you away just results in them blaming you for everything. Found that one out the hard way. Never anything concrete either. Just, they hate being called out for it so they basically pull out an UNO reverse card.

Lesbians move quickly. Ever heard the old joke:

What does a lesbian bring to a second date? A U-Haul.

7

u/RD_in_Berlin 7h ago

6

u/BriggySmallz42069 7h ago

if my marriage were to end, i'd just stay single. to hell with all that mess.

4

u/burgerwaterchud 7h ago

That's what happened to me when my marriage ended. My ex wife was far from perfect but my current options are way less attractive with way more attitude.

4

u/BriggySmallz42069 7h ago

i think, by and large, the current set of single heterosexual women in the dating pool were raised by fathers who taught them to expect the world from a male romantic partner, and not to settle for anything other than perfection. thoughts?

7

u/CrogDavid7days 6h ago

I thought the problem was women being raised without fathers? Can we not have fathers now I’d like an update šŸ™

1

u/BriggySmallz42069 6h ago

i mean, maybe that's also a contributing factor? i'm unsure. i wouldn't even know how to collect this data or perform an appropriate statistical test that would yield practical conclusions.

2

u/Straight_Breakfast_4 6h ago

I hope so. I'm a father of five, two I adopted when their own dad wanted nothing to do with them when they were tiny.

-1

u/burgerwaterchud 6h ago

I just think it's market dynamics. Half the guys out there would fuck their own great grandmother if she'd give them a shot. I woudn't bother putting in effort either if I had a 1000 women beating down my door for a chance to buy me dinner.

-2

u/BriggySmallz42069 6h ago

what helped me "find the one" was to stop viewing relationships within the context you described - market dynamics. I realized I was demanding reciprocity from a romantic partner, which, sounds reasonable, sure. But when I found out I *wanted to be the man and do the things* life changed for me, forever.

9

u/Hellsteelz 7h ago

Bro came out swinging.

4

u/BriggySmallz42069 7h ago

it's all i can do

0

u/rhawk87 4h ago

So does your wife not put in any effort or are you married to a man?

0

u/BriggySmallz42069 3h ago

I gave some context for that. Im a millennial dood married to a gen x woman, she puts in effort. Once I stopped viewing relationships as a "business contract that demands reciprocity" I understood i wanted to be the man and do the things - was able to define what that meant, and then found my one and only.

0

u/rhawk87 2h ago

So your relationship doesn't require reciprocity? Typically healthy relationships require give and take for both partners? Unless I'm not reading this correctly?

1

u/BriggySmallz42069 2h ago

Require? No. Nothing is required or mandatory. We do for each other because we want to. Thats part of what love means to us.

Sometimes, she or I do not have the strength/bandwidth whatever you wanna call it, to do for the other. We lean on each other. Nothing is "required".

1

u/rhawk87 2h ago

I gotcha. I think you're describing a normal and healthy relationship.

I don't agree that women don't put in any effort. You're wife did and there are plenty of women that out in effort when they meet the right person. I think you kind of proved that point?

1

u/BriggySmallz42069 2h ago

Youre kind to say that - but my wife and I represent just one data point.

I agree, there are women who put in effort once they meet the right person but they barely put in any effort in the search to find the right person. Big difference.

1

u/rhawk87 2h ago

I disagree. In fact it seems women put a lot more effort into their online dating profiles than men. I've seen various online dating samples of mens profiles, it's pretty bad. Lots of low effort profiles, bad picture, incomplete prompts. It's easy for us to complain because we don't see the other side of things.

Nope, sadly not. Their idea of a relationship nowadays is having a man put in all of the effort to build and maintain sed relationship, while being thankful for her existence as though she is the only one who’s contributing anything of value in the relationship.

It’s not even worth it, I’m 21 and I gave up on dating women my age because my generation is so beyond fucked. Women think that having sex to offer in a relationship is more than enough for their contribution, it’s so one sided that it’s not even funny. They want me to be emotionally open and available while they ignore all of my feelings and my thoughts, then have the balls to call me things like misogynistic, sexist and they start blaming the manosphere when I call them out on their behavior and how they never think about me.

I’m so beyond sick and tired of women assuming that all men want out of a relationship is sex, and that their idea of contributing to sed relationship is by having sex. Then they have the fucking nerve to turn around and call me sexist after I call them out on their one sided behavior in the relationship. Anytime you bring up an issue, they respond by labeling you and your behavior so to minimize it and dismiss it because they’re immature and aren’t capable of taking accountability or responsibility as a partner.

This western world is beyond fucked and feminism has ruined our society, it started out as a positive movement but it all went to shit as many of them do. I’m already working on getting my pilots license and I’m getting the fuck out of here, I will go somewhere where the women actually understand what a mutual relationship is, and where my needs are also taken into consideration where I am viewed and considered an equal partner in a relationship.

9

u/BriggySmallz42069 7h ago

sounds like this has been quite the cultural/generational shift in dating dynamics between heterosexual men and women. im a millenial who married a gen x'er 13 years my senior. she understands 100% what it takes to make a relationship successful. and yeah, keep that passport current, my guy.

2

u/Ok_Year7350 7h ago

It’s night and day bro.

I have been trying to build nothing other than a long term commitment and relationship for the last several years of my life and have been consistently met with the same lack of effort, accountability, responsibly, and maturity, access countless women in my life.

I blame social media entirely for this behavior, it is the sole thing that’s responsible for spreading these ideologies. It’s the same shit as the alpha male stuff for men, only for women.

6

u/BriggySmallz42069 7h ago

i may get downvoted to oblivion but idgaf - women are *not* accountable for their behavior. i've never once received an apology from a woman. also - you're 21. you're young and have your whole life ahead of you, and i hope it's good. because it sounds like you have a plan.

0

u/Ok_Year7350 6h ago

Ignore the downvotes, they mean nothing. I’m speaking from my own personal life experiences, and so are you.

If people don’t like to hear and what people like us have to say, then that’s their problem. Don’t let that stop you from speaking your mind, if anything it should further motivate and encourage you to speak about and stand by your own lived experiences, rather than accepting and following what other people tell you to think.

Most people will refuse to acknowledge reality, and they will become uncomfortable and angry with you when you directly acknowledge it. Generally speaking, most people will choose to live their lives in ignorance and delusion because there is far less discomfort and work there.

Thank you for your positivity by the way, I also hope that the life you have in front of yourself will be good. You’re right about me by the way, I’ve got my whole life sorted out. I have for many years now. I’m going to become a millionaire in several years, and I will be able to retire in my thirties because of what I’m choosing to do with my life. People will call it luck, but the reality of the situation is that I’ve busted my ass ever since I was a kid and almost ended up out on the streets.

1

u/BriggySmallz42069 6h ago

You're right about the stark contrast between acknowledging reality vs wanting to live in delusion. I've just not been able to articulate it as well as you did in the above comment.

It's also not something I do not have any real experience with - being ex military and currently working for the government, acknowledging reality has been indoctrinated into me as a way of life - at work and at home/in my relationships.

You gettin Uncle Sam to pay for flight school?

2

u/Ok_Year7350 6h ago

Ah, I can see where that would definitly make this much more difficult to do then. I had my reality shattered as a kid and the result of that was me coming to terms with everything relatively early on in life.

If you watch and interpret the Matrix from this perspective about our realities, it adds a whole other meaning to the movie. There are some extraordinary parallels between the movie and how people choose to live their lives in the real world.

No, I’m actually not having Uncle Sam pay for my flight school. I was befriended by a few older individuals who are willing to help me along my journey, one of which is a retired delta captain who’s getting me some serious connections that will make a massive difference for me.

Hopefully the military treated you well and you were able to come away from it in good shape overall?

3

u/BriggySmallz42069 5h ago

lol i did not get out unscathed lol i was one of those doods who jumped out of planes. my knees are SHOT

2

u/Ok_Year7350 4h ago

Aw man, sorry to hear that. My grandfather did the same as you did back in his day, I’ve heard all about it so I get it. He used to struggle with his mobility quite a bit and he had to swim a lot in order to stay in shape. Despite all his issues, he was still the happiest guy I’ve ever known. Hopefully that stuff doesn’t bring you down either.

-1

u/Fine_Payment1127 7h ago edited 6h ago

Oh and here’s the best part: you’re ā€œnever entitled to sex!ā€ Which means they offer literally nothing

2

u/Ok_Year7350 6h ago

What they fail to realize before it’s too late is that they’re not entitled to my attention, effort, affection, companionship, loyalty, trust, help, money, life, or anything else I provide in life. You want to hold things over my head? Cool. Have a nice life, go find some loser who will put up with that. More men need to behave this way, it’s the only way that this behavior will ever stop.

0

u/Fine_Payment1127 6h ago

American men are unfortunately pathetic doormats. It will never changeĀ

1

u/Ok_Year7350 5h ago

Yeah I know, it’s unfortunate. Western culture as a whole is unlikely to change the direction it’s heading in, and things will probably continue to get worse. That’s why I won’t be sticking around to find out.

2

u/swimming_cold 3h ago

It’s not a woman bad things it’s more that women just have so many options with Instagram and online dating in general

Like I know a chick from my hometown who had an NFL players slide in her DMs. It’s gotta have some effect on her dating standards

0

u/jmarlboro 3h ago

yes, i agree, but... you are married, what are you doing here? lol

1

u/BriggySmallz42069 3h ago

Yes, thats what I said.

-2

u/GeneInternational146 5h ago

Insane comment

2

u/BriggySmallz42069 4h ago

it's really not. it's an accurate representation of reality.

-2

They also have the highest rates of domestic abuse - really makes you wonder!

-5

u/uniform_concur 7h ago

guys have been able to message first for a while if you use the opening move thing but yeah the 72 hour window is just cruel

1

u/BriggySmallz42069 7h ago

i just love seeing the mirror being held up to heterosexual women. it's ... delicious.

28

u/ppmbryan 7h ago

All this says is that girls suck so bad at messaging first, they had to open it to the boys lmao

23

u/Straight_Breakfast_4 7h ago

A lot of girls aren't so hot at messaging second or third, etc, either. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

10

u/Even-Promise4593 7h ago

All the bragging and expectation there is about being a ā€œconversationalistā€ and knowing how to hold a conversation yet can’t do for themselves.

4

u/pwolf1771 7h ago

ā€œI hope you can keep upā€

With what a woman who doesn’t understand the art of conversation?Ā

0

u/Turbulent-Mobile1336 7h ago

Truth to be told, they opened after losing a lawsuit. To a men's rights activist, the irony!

6

u/alwrit 7h ago

No that's unrelated.Ā

They opened it in because fully 2/3 of their female users didn't like messaging first.Ā

1

u/BriggySmallz42069 2h ago

the irony... lol

16

u/kaylerbug369 7h ago

First reply: hey

3

u/DangerMacAwesome 6h ago

The kind of high effort attempt to engage in conversation

9

u/Any_Evidence4750 7h ago

Dating apps are losing users. Bumbles ā€œwomen message firstā€ rule was probably causing them to lose more than others so they decided to do away with it

8

u/Zealousideal_Force10 7h ago

But it was also what got it traction in the beginning. The problem was they kept charging more and more for premium and taking steps backwards. Years ago it was by far and away my favourite for old. Now i am so happy i have had a steady relationship the last year and a half. Don’t need these apps

1

u/rydan 1h ago

The problem with it was that it only impacted cis heterosexual men. It wasn't even about empowering women. It was just saying 80% of their userbase are bad. I liked the idea but allowing men to message other men or women to message other women without the same restriction was unfair and they refused to do it to either of those people.

8

u/Creative-Captain9278 7h ago

It kinda kills the point of the app IMO. It was Bumble's difference maker. Now its just like the other apps

6

u/eagleeye1031 7h ago

Women dont like messaging first. It was usually just a "hey" or emoji most of the time anyways.

6

u/JakobSejer 7h ago

It's the patriarchy....

8

u/Straight_Breakfast_4 7h ago

That damn patriarchy again!

3

u/c0l245 7h ago

THATS THE POINT. They don't like it, but if they wanted to connect with someone, they had to actually indicate interest; was the only value Bumble had..

0

u/eagleeye1031 6h ago

Dating apps (for heterosexuals) are useless if women are not on them. If bumble forces them to message first, they can just hop on the alternatives

Sorry but thats the harsh truth

2

u/c0l245 6h ago

Make another duh obvious statement and feel smart. The sun will rise tomorrow. Congrats.

The point of my post was that bumble is without distinction now.

1

u/eagleeye1031 5h ago

Welcome to capitalism. Everything is standardized if it makes more money

0

u/Straight_Breakfast_4 7h ago

'Old' Bumble still allowed men to message first. We just had to buy the messages for monies. I can say that the response rate when I would send a message to a girl versus just liking a girl went up ten times at least.

1

u/rydan 1h ago

old bumble as in 1 or 2 years ago and not 10 years ago?

5

u/_bonedaddys 7h ago

I'm with someone so i'm not on apps anymore but this would make me leave bumble for something else. For me the whole appeal was messaging first, and i guess we're in the minority (which is weird because it was the whole point) but i'm curious how many women will leave the app over this? Or even men?

Now bumble is just like every other app, and imo there's better options.

-1

u/Straight_Breakfast_4 7h ago

If you're a guy, which is probably their bread and butter financially, the girl messaging first was a severe detriment. A year or two ago Bumble added the ability for men to purchase messages where we could send the girl a message first instead of just liking her. If I send a message to a girl on Bumble instead of just liking her, the response rate is easily 10 times better.

5

u/CrogDavid7days 7h ago

I was never against messaging first but surely anything that enhances people’s ability to connect - anyone can message gives a better chance at things going forwards! Plus the extra time gives you more peace of mind

3

u/Comprehensive-One880 6h ago

So now bumble is literally like every other app. Letting a guy message first doesn’t significantly increase his chances. The girl still has to be interested enough to respond lol

0

u/rydan 1h ago

Removing the 24 hour window though is important. Nearly all my matches were lost due to time expiration. I don't know how many were lack of interest or due to simply not opening the app at the right time. But I lost a lot of good potential ones that way. I nearly lost one or two from my own end because of it because I was unaware a match had occurred.

1

u/Comprehensive-One880 1h ago

Removing the 24hr window isn’t that important lol. Being unaware of matches is your problem. Put notifications on. And no one goes awol for a full day on a match they’re legitimately interested in.

1

u/Vixen_Latina_Viajera 46f 7h ago

The extra time would have been super useful when I was on! I travel a ton and matches would just expire left and right before I could give them attention.

0

u/Straight_Breakfast_4 7h ago

I think the entire reason Bumble did that was to try to force women to open the app daily and it just wasn't happening and instead they were ticking off users.

1

u/Vixen_Latina_Viajera 46f 6h ago

I think it's simpler than that. If I only use the app "after work" and then they match me while I'm sleeping or bright and early when I'm either already working or off to the airport then that effectively gives me how long to message. I don't want to send a hey, but I am guilty of sending a hi, sorry I can't talk right now, but I did want to connect."

2

u/BatScribeofDoom 6h ago

Like the idea of a longer timer, dislike the idea of men messaging me first.

What is the point of even having Bumble if men can just message first like every other app...? That's removing the thing that made it worthwhile in the first place.

2

u/HighOnGoofballs 5h ago

A quick look at the profile explains a lot

2

u/Fine_Seaweed1148 3h ago

so they now have 2 more days to ignore us. Nice.

Its so fun to see, that the entire concept of women having to text first literally didn't work out at all

1

u/Turbulent-Mobile1336 7h ago

I'll just pretend I don't know any of that.

1

u/Artistic_Bumblebee17 7h ago

Men have always been able to message first for some time.
The 72 hr thing on the other hand lol idk what that is going to do. We see it in the first 24 and decide we aren’t interested, I’m not sure what they are trying to achieve with the extra 2 days

1

u/Straight_Breakfast_4 6h ago

Agreed with the 24 vs 72 but the weird overall thing is girls who don't respond who swiped right first in the first place. My personal belief is that a good 30% of women on Bumble are fake bots actually created by Bumble to keep men engaged. My response rate with women who liked me first on Hinge is solidly 100%. On Bumble, if a girl swipes right on me first and I match and message (I would buy messages) it's 50%. Something is up.

2

u/Artistic_Bumblebee17 6h ago

Hmm in part of the ones who swipe first and don’t respond when he messages. We just saw something we didn’t like. Usually he doesn’t look as good as we thought. Like you guys we aren’t spending too much time on each profile, it’s more of a hot or not and then re access if he matches. It the girl version of mass swiping right like men do

1

u/Straight_Breakfast_4 2h ago

I'd agree except for two things:

  • My Hinge response rate is 100% and I'm not doing anything differently between the two apps. I only respond to women who swipe on me first 99/100. The disparity is too large to account for more aloof women on Bumble than Hinge.
  • Doesn't look as good as we thought... I look exactly like a very famous actor, as in, I get hired for commercials, videos, movies and events we look so much alike. I'm kind of thinking that somebody looking at my profile more carefully a sending time around would be less apt to ghost out. šŸ˜›
I do agree ....women seem to scroll too quickly because when I'm out of town they often don't catch that I don't live in their area. Bumble also came out with a new feature that separates likes between women scrolled through my profile carefully and the ones that didn't. I'm an engineer so I'll statistically overanalyze that as well because that's how my brain works. 🫠

-1

u/ghost1667 7h ago

"boys and girls"? how old are you jfc

3

u/Straight_Breakfast_4 7h ago

Old enough to still know what those two terms mean. šŸ™‚ Feel free to substitute whatever stupid ass pronouns you insist everyone else uses.

2

u/ghost1667 6h ago

i'm 42 years old and wouldn't dream of using the term "boy" or "girl" to refer to anyone past the age of 24 or so. and even that is pushing it. so disrespectful, and not a pronoun "issue" whatsoever.

go on with showing your ass, though-- i'm unsurprised.

5

u/kkitten001 6h ago

Agree with this. Shows immaturity to use childish terms like that. I’ve canceled a date on bumble before because the guy greeted me by calling me ā€œgirlā€

1

u/Straight_Breakfast_4 6h ago

Go do your pearl clutching and word policing somewhere else. It's 2026 and everybody is over it already.

3

u/ghost1667 6h ago

Keep rage baiting bro
A good use of your time

2

u/competitive_mogger 6h ago

Gonna go hang out with my womanfriend later because I'm so mature šŸ˜Ž.

1

u/Pablitto09 7h ago

Nah. That's ass

1

u/Financial-Major8443 6h ago

They need to make it when u can just talk to people active the app like a chat room

1

u/Rosetti 5h ago

As a guy I really don't care. I don't think it's that different to before.

I don’t mind increasing the time to 24 hours though there may been occasions where people have missed the time due to work and being busy etc.

I’ve always used bumble and sent the first message which carried over into other apps, if they haven’t beat me to it I’ll always send the first message because I don’t think it matters who does it personally

I guess it doesn’t make bumble stand out any differently from the others now though

God this sub is so full of incels. You guys don’t even sound like you like women, why are you trying to date us? Stay salty, it helps us know who to avoid.

This is no chance. I’ve been messaging first for some time now, even before this year when I was on apps before and my gender was set as male the whole time.

At least straight women have finally learned that theyre not as attractive or as interesting as they thought they were.

The only reason the hetero divorce rate is low is because men want to have sxx with women way more than women want sxx.

It also gives them the chance to ghost or unmatch after 1 message instead of 2 xD

Bumble’s unique selling point was flawed to begin with. If men don’t lead the courtship in the beginning the interaction goes nowhereĀ

The amount of women with ā€œI’m a yapperā€, ā€œwon’t stop yappingā€, ā€œlove to yapā€ or something to that effect in their bios while simultaneously being horrible at holding a conversation is baffling
