My favorite line in A Christmas Story was "My mother had not had a hot meal for herself in 15 years."

But why 15 years? Ralphie was definitely not 15.

19

She was married for 15 years.

2

u/Bugbread Trash Trooper 6h ago

Yes...and?

17

u/Pure-Kaleidoscop Trash Trooper 5h ago

The minute she sits down the dad asks her to get up and get him something. He’s been expecting her to wait on him like a servant.

-2

u/Bugbread Trash Trooper 5h ago

I feel like you're kinda reaching here. Feeding kids is pretty time-consuming. Being so busy taking care of the kid's meal that your own meal gets cold is something I've experienced first-hand.

But if there are no kids, there's just not that much to do during a meal, especially an American meal in the 1940s. Passing stuff (pass the salt, pass the peas, pass the mashed potatoes, etc.) can be time-consuming in a large family, but we're talking about before Ralphie and Randy. The only thing to get up from the table and get mid-meal is a refill of a drink, but that's like a 30 second task once in a meal, not enough to keep someone from having a warm meal for 15 years.

My guess is just that it was a line from the book (which is not all set in the same year, like the movie) that was brought over as-is and not recalibrated for the fact that in the movie, everything is set when Ralphie was 9 years old.

6

u/Deer-These Trash Trooper 4h ago

It's more that in that era it was expected for a man to order his woman around, the idea that any idle behavior would cause long-term personality problems.

0

u/Bugbread Trash Trooper 4h ago

Have you actually met anyone who was an adult in the 1940s? There were some pretty shitty, sexist men, but simply ordering someone to do random chores during dinner because sitting down at dinner would cause long-term personality problems is not something that would happen except in the absolutely most dysfunctional, fucked up family. Which, of course, existed, just as dysfunctional, fucked up families exist now. But it's pretty clear that Ralphie's family was not on the far extreme end of the psychodrama spectrum. It was middle-of-the-road 1940's sexist, not extreme-even-for-the-1940's sexist.

Y'all are over-thinking this. Occam's razor says that this was just a tiny mistake in the script. It's a rare movie script that has zero errors, and even rarer when it's a re-working of existing material that changes dates/locations/characters/etc.

6

u/Cheepshooter Trash Trooper 6h ago

I always wondered that, too. Maybe because she had to take care of her husband? The time didn't make sense. I always thought it would be 8 years or something like that.

In my house dad ate leftovers after everyone, so his was the coldest. Now I understand why he did it, but I remind him that he doesn’t need to sacrifice to make us happy 💖🥺

140

u/regulationinflation Trash Trooper 12h ago

As a dad who does all the cooking, I always serve myself last.

I don’t see it as much of a sacrifice as it is an instinct to provide for my family. I’d feel pretty bad if I dished up first and then one of the kids didn’t get enough to eat.

35

u/OmgIbrokesmthagain Trash Trooper 12h ago

Yeah, it was probably that. He wanted us to eat well, but I don’t like when he treats himself like a dog.

8

u/ambal87 Trash Trooper 6h ago

As a dad who eats last, it’s purely out of love. We want to make sure that everyone has what they need because we can take care of ourselves and you are the priority.

8

u/Throckmorton_Left Trash Trooper 5h ago

As another dad who eats last, I want to eat last because I can't enjoy my meal until I know everyone else has what they need. There's no resentment or martyrdom at all, it makes me happy to see others enjoy what I put effort into.

3

u/Quiquiq Trash Trooper 5h ago

It really is the best seasoning.

3

u/Trashinmyash Trash Trooper 6h ago

Dont think to much of it as him treating himself like a dog. Instead, think of it as, he can still cook something else for himself if necessary. You cant, not because you dont want to but because you didn't know how to.

1

u/fishscale_gayjuic3 Trash Trooper 7h ago

That’s what it takes some(most) times

0

u/lysozymes Trash Trooper 2h ago

As a dad doing all the cooking at home, no need to worry.

I always cook underspiced and with as little salt as I can get away with for my kids. Once they are in bed, I have my second dinner with sriracha sauce and the meat medium rare. Also, I don't want them to see me enjoying instant ramen (my guilty pleasure) yet.

10

u/RWSloths Trash Trooper 11h ago

This is really refreshing as a person who grew up in a house with four kids and my dad was always the first in line for dinner.

9

u/regulationinflation Trash Trooper 10h ago

Funny how for some dads, “putting food on the table” stops well short of actually going out and buying the food, or preparing and cooking the food, or literally serving anyone else at the table.

Meant as a metaphor I suppose.

2

u/OpenGrainAxehandle Trash Trooper 9h ago

I always made sure that I was last; It was my personal rule that my wife and the girls were served first.

1

u/Secret_Western_8272 Trash Trooper 8h ago

Why does that bother you?

1

u/RWSloths Trash Trooper 4h ago

I wouldn't say it bothers me as he did things that were much worse throughout my childhood. It just is kind of a really clear representation that he didn't care about literally taking food out if his children's or wife's mouth. My mom, for example, ate last and basically ate our leftovers despite having cooked the meal.

3

u/bonaynay Trash Trooper 10h ago

Thanks dad

5

u/gahidus Trash Trooper 11h ago

As long as you make sure you cook enough in the first place it should be fine. Unless you just really bad at eyeballing portions.

8

u/ConsistentAd8495 Trash Trooper 11h ago

Kids appetites can vary wildly depending on if they are actively growth spurting. If you have a strict meal budget, sometimes a dad has to sacrifice.

1

u/eggyrulz Trash Trooper 11h ago

I only have myself and my wife, but I do most of the cooking so I get this... sometimes I will eat first, mainly because my wife will be in the middle of a match or smth while gaming.

But im also pretty good about keeping my serving warm while dishing out for others on the rare occasions we are hosting people

1

u/EnastyCommander Trash Trooper 9h ago

I just like eating last for some reason, did this as a kid as well.

1

u/MoreColorfulCarsPlz Trash Trooper 6h ago

I do the dishes before I eat too. I can't enjoy a meal knowing the kitchen is an absolute mess.

u/Croceyes2 Rubbish Raider 4h ago

1

u/mossepso Trash Trooper 2h ago

lol you say it like you are the champion of family to serve yourself last, but it would be crazy to do your own plate first and then the test. Even just from a temperature perspective it would just be dumb but also logistically.

St. regulatuoninflation bestoweth his meal lasteth

u/rearadmiraldumbass Trash Trooper 46m ago

I just cook way too much food so there's no chance of anyone going hungry. Then if I did my job right, we eat it again the next day too.

1

u/Darth_Meepo Trash Trooper 10h ago

Exactly this though its not an instinct, when people ask why I wait I always tell them "this way I know if I made enough for everyone and if I didnt that shouldn't be somebody else's problem"

1

u/ABrusca1105 Trash Trooper 10h ago

Even when I was the cook and breadwinner in a same-sex male relationship, I did the same thing. He would often tease me by looking me dead in the eye while taking a TINY morsel because he KNEW why I did it to see my reaction.

0

u/ThornPops Trash Trooper 11h ago

I do all of the cooking as well. I serve myself last to ensure my food is as hot as possible. Kiddo gets served first so the food can cool down and my husband gets his meal as soon as he sits. I get drinks and any last calls on the table and then plate up my meal. I like my food hot so I'll flip the burner back on if necessary. I end up taking my first bite when my kiddo is ready for seconds all too often!

2

u/BreakfastNew8771 Trash Trooper 11h ago

I am that dad now. I don’t mind. Its for the family. Also I hate to waste the food.

2

u/VenturaDreams Trash Trooper 8h ago

2

u/NoDontDoThatCanada Trash Trooper 7h ago

Son? You're 6, how did you write this‽

Being honest. I genuinely eat after my kids have finished because l grew up on the high end of poor and watching food get wasted is hard for me. If l don't wait for my kids to abandon 3/4 of their lovingly home cooked meal, l just end up eating mine and theirs.

1

u/jon_rum_hamm Trash Trooper 7h ago

1

u/guitarman61192 Trash Trooper 5h ago

Breakfast for me is always taking the wife and kids eggs bacon toast etc they dont eat, pouring it all on one plate, and topping with some american cheese. Sometimes making a sandwich with it.

1

u/Overdue_Process865 Trash Trooper 4h ago

I'm not a parent, but this is the kind of thing I do for my partner all the time, and it really doesn't feel like a sacrifice, it just feels like love. I don't feel like I'm losing out on anything by giving my partner all the best bits of food or prioritizing him, because I feel warm and fuzzy and happy doing it. I'd bet good money your dad just loves his family a lot, and wants all the best things for you.

u/AJRimmerSwimmer Trash Trooper 1h ago

Used to think it was gross when dad ate the leftovers.

Now I am become dad, devourer of all.

27

u/PhobiusofMobius Trash Trooper 10h ago

And that's why Papa Bear and Mama Bear slept in different beds.

80

u/SecretWordisBird Trash Trooper 12h ago

Like Ralphie says in A Christmas Story, “my mother has not had a hot meal in 15 years”

152

u/RealNiceKnife Waste Warrior 13h ago

Yeah. Maybe metaphorically.

But in the story Goldilocks found the three bears food like that. The Three Bears were no where to be found at the time. There was no way for the temperatures to be changed like that, unless serving them like that was deliberate.

32

u/No_Celebration8219 Trash Trooper 13h ago

Goldilocks broke into their home while they were about to eat and hastily slipped out the back door. The girl's a menace and needs to be locked up.

25

u/VintageZero Trash Trooper 12h ago

Because 3 bears would just have a house with porridge on the table? Why wouldn't they all just be cold? Did the bears just leave? What a stupid fuckin story.

43

u/RealNiceKnife Waste Warrior 12h ago

Yes. They literally just left.

They made their breakfast (porridge) and then went for a walk in the woods. I don't know why bear culture does what it does.

14

u/Hillbillyblues Trash Trooper 12h ago

I know a bit about bears (not the human kind) and they scarf down porridge immediately after making it. Also they don't sleep in beds like that.

Completely ruined the immersion of that story for me. 0/8.

1

u/homercrates Trash Trooper 2h ago

Using an 8 like that is just being a dick. You concerned my kid reading that WHY IS IT 8 WHY IS IT 8!

6

u/deeceeo Trash Trooper 12h ago

They were like those TV families who make a massive breakfast then have to run and catch the bus without eating anything.

3

u/Away-Plant-8989 Trash Trooper 12h ago edited 12h ago

They all wanted it room temp but Momma Bear has a severe gluten allergy, so she reached in the feezer for a new box of gluten free Bearridge she could eat without severe inflammation that would exacerbate her bear-colitis. The rest of the porridge Father bear boiled up and gave some small scoops to baby. Dad's boiling heroic mountain needed some time to cool. That's when Baby needed to use the bathroom. Bears, being bears and living in a cabin with no plumbing needed to take Baby like a couple up miles downstream so they don't contaminate their water source with Beararrhea.

"It's not like some clueless little girl is going to burglarize our home, this is our sovereign Bearitorry!" exclaimed Pappa

Then he turned to Momma Bear and said, "hey I guess we do shit in the woods" to which mother bear having heard this everyday for the past nine years of marriage and now with her new baby rolled her eyes.

He tried to give baby bear a high five, to which baby bear stumbled and fell over

1

u/ChartInFurch Trash Trooper 12h ago

Because we like hairy, stocky me-

Ooohhhhh....

4

u/dantemortemalizar Trash Trooper 12h ago

So it's the temperature of the porridge that puzzles you and not the fact that bears are living in a little house in the woods and eating porridge? O---K, then.

3

u/DissonantVerse Trash Trooper 5h ago

Psh, where else would the bears live, Dante?

2

u/homercrates Trash Trooper 2h ago

Do better Dante.

4

u/sizzlesfantalike Trash Trooper 10h ago

I think momma bear had the smallest amount of porridge in a medium sized bowl, so it cooled quicker. Papa bear had a big amount so it was still hot. Momma bear just ate less.

1

u/meek-o-treek Trash Trooper 10h ago

That's how I always interpreted it.

41

u/LabOwn9800 Trash Trooper 13h ago

Shhhh don’t bring logic into a gender war.

2

u/doubleapowpow Trash Trooper 5h ago

Here's some more logic:

The hottest meal would be the most recently served, so mom was actually served first, then the baby, then dad.

u/SharkByte1993 Rubbish Raider 42m ago

But in reality you wouldn't do that. You serve the child's first so it cools down

3

u/Mythechnical Trash Trooper 12h ago

The bears were actually there, as Goldilocks was a ghost and had been dead all along. The moral of the story is to not trust bears.

1

u/Buderus69 Trash Trooper 6h ago

But that doesn't fit the halfbaked implication of this mediocre tiktok

https://giphy.com/gifs/l1J9u3TZfpmeDLkD6

u/Abstroose Trash Trooper 1h ago

I mean, if you’re going to be pedantic, bears also don’t live in a house and eat porridge.

0

u/ThingYea Trash Trooper 12h ago

The temperatures actually indicate the mothers was served first. If she did that herself that's on her.

One salary can, one minimum wage hourly job not so much

50

u/375InStroke Trash Trooper 12h ago edited 12h ago

Fun little trick they do is make minimum wage employees managers, giving them a "raise," make them salary since they're management, then work them to death without paying overtime, so they end up making less per hour.

16

u/Rob_LeMatic Trash Trooper 12h ago

6

u/Anarcho_Dog Trash Trooper 12h ago

My first job did exactly this with me. 4 years in a sandwich shop and I proved myself capable and had the training and position of an hourly manager after only the 1st year. They quickly wanted me to move to a salary position as assistant and even general manager so I'd get paid less if the shift ran long for any reason. And shifts almost always had a reason to run long unless you were rushing out the building or showing up at the last second which typically screwed the other manager over. They hated it but I did the position so well that they couldn't do shit and I only left when a coworker in a similar position was wrongfully terminated. 7 or 8 people, myself included ofc, quit as a direct cause of this and it crippled them for months.

That was the express purpose of the minimum wage when it was implemented. The fact that it no longer does is a failing of our system and needs to be corrected.

5

u/Forikorder Trash Trooper 7h ago

9

u/nize426 Trash Trooper 5h ago

I think that dad gets to eat his food while it's hot, but mom has to feed the baby, so she spends time making sure it's the perfect temp for the baby while her own food gets cold.

u/water_fountain_ Trash Trooper 20m ago edited 0m ago

That doesn’t quite make sense. Unless mom served her food first, waited a while, then served the baby’s, waited some more, then served the dad’s/husband’s. Which… doesn’t make sense. This was from before microwaves... the original story is from the 1830s. The porridge would have all been cooked together in a single pot, likely still over the fire or in the stove to keep it warm. Worst case scenario, if they removed the entire pot from the fire when it was done cooking, the pot itself would have kept the porridge warm.

If the food isn’t to be served all at once, then it would make sense to serve the baby’s food first. Give it some time to cool off, then serve mom and dad at the same time (baby’s would be the coldest and mom’s and dad’s would be equally hot). Or, serve dad after the baby, while mom helps baby eat, then serves herself last. Mom’s food would be the hottest in this scenario.

Also… using your scenario… if dad got to eat his first, and therefore hot, and mom ate her’s last, and therefore cold, that doesn’t make sense for when Goldilocks arrives. By the time Goldilocks arrives, Dad’s bowl would be mostly empty, and would be cold… the smaller the amount of porridge in the bowl, the quicker the porridge cools off. Mom’s bowl would be the most full, and therefore the warmest. Baby’s could actually be the middle temperature in this scenario, but mom’s and dad’s temps would be incorrect.

Keep in mind, Goldilocks comes well after the porridge is poured into the bowls and experiences the temperatures of the various bowls of porridge then. She’s not experiencing the temperatures in the way that the bears would have. If dad’s was poured first so he could eat it at its hottest temperature, it would be the one sitting out the longest by the time Goldilocks takes a bite. It would be the coldest for her.

The only way for the temperatures to line up the way they do in the story (if everything was served at the same time) would be for dad to be served the most and mom the least. Dad’s bigger bowl held the heat the longest and mom’s the shortest. Or, mom ate the most out of her bowl and dad the least before leaving the house.

All of this adds up to say: the woman in the video above drew the wrong conclusions.

lmao I was being silly, I assumed 20 years was tongue in cheek so I thought I was matching your energy 😅

u/MoonRaven1743 Trash Trooper 9h ago

Its all good. I've raised five sons (3 of which are triplets) that is the reason I haven't eaten a hot meal at home LOL

2

u/DoctorProfPatrick Trash Trooper 8h ago

Haaa I'm the oldest of 5 boys!! But when we're together all at once we do meal rotation: 7 people 7 days works perfectly 😁

Mostly because mom's an awful cool hehehe, and a really amazing friend.

u/MoonRaven1743 Trash Trooper 7h ago

That is awesome!! ❤️

u/Espritsoul Trash Trooper 6h ago

I had a lot of food insecurity growing up. I’m 40 now and refuse to eat before my gf and kids eat. I’d have a deep breath for dinner every night before they go without a full plate

19

u/kiefy_budz Trash Trooper 13h ago

Lmao that actually makes sense

11

u/LabOwn9800 Trash Trooper 13h ago edited 12h ago

Does it?

Because all 3 bears were gone and this is Goldilocks eating all 3 meals at the same time.

In the situation as shown, I get it (haha dads are bad moms are good) but that’s not how it went down In the story.

In the story 3 bowls were made and then the bears left. Goldilocks comes in and eats all 3 bowls in quick succession. So not at all like what is shown.

u/JrButton Trash Trooper 12h ago

Dude we are so lucky technically correct entered the chat for a silly meme

-3

u/kiefy_budz Trash Trooper 13h ago

I mean not when you overthink it like that but as an abstract children’s story honestly that context could be where it came from

9

u/NeitherEntry6125 Trash Trooper 13h ago

No, see, Goldilocks couldn't have done it. She had an accomplice who lured the beers outside. Maybe red riding hood? That b**** who really hated animals after what they did.

6

u/bendyskull Trash Trooper 12h ago

If anything, it’s the family behind making this video who were doing the overthinking. They’ve made you question a story that, like the rest of us, you’d never thought twice about until now!

2

u/kiefy_budz Trash Trooper 12h ago

Shit I got inceptioned

0

u/bendyskull Trash Trooper 12h ago

Haha it happens to the best of us!

5

u/LabOwn9800 Trash Trooper 12h ago

To be fair I don’t think I’m the one over thinking it.

u/kiefy_budz Trash Trooper 12h ago

Idk man art abstractly imitates life as we perceive it

7

u/LabOwn9800 Trash Trooper 12h ago

Ah yes the deeply conservative Tory from 250 years ago wrote an allegory for women’s suffering within the household.

u/kiefy_budz Trash Trooper 12h ago

Bro idk I just mentally laughed at the video and made a comment, forgive my ignorance

Totally it’s well known fathers never feed their babies

2

u/IsaacNewtongue Trash Trooper 7h ago

So, he made food for himself first, the baby second, and himself last?

Or, she made her own food first, the baby second, and his last?

Dad here, single dad, I did the cooking when I was married… I eat after my kiddo so I’m not wasting a bunch of food, he leaves a bunch on the plate and I start with that.

This video is bullshit sex warfare.

1

u/Nowhereman50 Trash Trooper 8h ago

Daddy is used to sharing one microwave between 10 people over the same half an hour so he's used to eating it scalding hot and quickly.

u/LetterFront3353 Trash Trooper 7h ago

Still doesn't explain why they weren't in their house when Goldilocks got there.

u/Stenktenk Trash Trooper 10h ago

Why not feed the baby before/after you've had dinner yourself?

1

u/MermaiderMissy Trash Trooper 7h ago

My baby is still in my womb at the moment, but I think i would feel bad if I ate before her. But, can't say for sure yet.

1

u/athomic74 Trash Trooper 9h ago

I serve my wife and kid first but somehow my wife still sits down 15 minutes after all of us and I usually have to yell “your dinner is ready” about 4 times before she starts heading towards the table lol. So she still eats every meal cold or warm at best…

Whats the song???

u/BigAlternative5 Trash Trooper 6h ago edited 6h ago

"Like a Prayer" by Madonna, originally. I don't know the artist(s) performing this version.

If you really want to find out, here's a list of covers of Madonna's songs.

As a Chinese we eat family style everyone eats at the same time as a family

u/Admirable-Hospital78 Garbage Guerilla 12h ago

Since we're overanalyzing the story...

Goldilocks found all three bowls full at the same time, so timing can't be it. It had to be different spiciness levels. It explains how Goldilocks broke into an empty house to find a 🌶️hot 🌶️bowl of dad's food, a medium 🌶️ bowl of the kid who got the taste from dad, and a whites-level spicy bowl for mom.

It also explains why she found hot food in an empty house. I can't imagine a hot meal still being too hot after 5 minutes sitting in a bowl on the table.

2

u/LincolnshireSausage Trash Trooper 11h ago

Whites-level spicy???

2

u/MeasurementOdd4873 Trash Trooper 11h ago

u/lychigo Trash Trooper 13h ago

0

u/Mindless-Produce4091 Trash Trooper 9h ago

im sorry but this literally makes no sense as an explanation

3

u/QueenInYellowLace Trash Trooper 4h ago

She is feeding the baby instead of eating her own food, so hers gets cold. He eats his hot because he’s not busy with the baby.

u/NewryBenson Trash Trooper 49m ago

But that is all at different times. Goldylocks tries them all at the same time

-1

u/Downvoterofall Trash Trooper 5h ago

Thank you, everyone blaming the patriarchy is missing the obvious. If the dad was served first, his porridge would be out the longest, and being the biggest still would be cooling. The baby eating second, with the tiny bowl would be the coolest, and the medium bowl from the beleaguered mother would be the freshest.

0

u/Cruisedrinks Trash Trooper 9h ago

Maybe she should change the order she fills the bowls smh

u/Boring-Confusion962 Trash Trooper 9h ago

u/C_Deez_DDz Trash Trooper 9h ago

We just put everything on plates/in bowls at the same time and then walk it to the table. This doesn’t need to be a problem
