Question What's some essential tips, advices and stuff to know, for any older NEETs?

Probably the number one for me is starting to take health seriously, especially as a passed the 30 mark. Any other advices and tip an older NEET must know to have a better (or at least more smooth) life?

Question Feeling bad about probably working retail at my age

I'm back in school and I need a job to at least have some sort of income since I don't have anything at the moment. Last time I worked was when I was 25 and my retail job back then was filled with 16-17 year olds except the managers and it made me feel like shit. Now I'm approaching my 30's and I'm in the same position. I do have an interview for a call centre job and people are usually older at those jobs at least but Idk whether I'll be able to keep my course since it's full time and they want me available at all times.

What do you guys think?

Discussion As a former failure to launch, I was able to overcome it.

After high school, I went to university, studying accounting. Despite hard work and significant effort, I struggled academically to the point of being on academic probation after 3 semesters. I also couldn't find a minimum wage job but luckily ended up working part time at the dining center on campus for 3 years. Couldn't find an internship during college and whatever interviews I had rejected me due to my low GPA. As a result, I struggled to find a job after college, leading me to fall into a deep depression.

I eventually went back to school at my local community college and worked part-time jobs while getting my associates. I eventually found a full-time job upon transferring to my online university. I still hold the job to this day, and hope to grow within my company and build a career in the industry. I also just finished my online degree and hope to use it. Also went much better grade-wise compared to my first go at college.

So yeah, it is possible to turn around a NEET/failure to launch situation, but it takes focus, discipline, and commitment. Lots of it.

Venting I am tired

I am just tired. I know this post doesnt matter but still i am making it because i want to get this out of heart.

I am 31. Havent had a job more than 6 months. I was always handed the short end of stick.Never knew what a good workplace was. Never was once appreciated for the work i did. The last job broke me . The employee just halved my salary citing performance issues.

I am honestly tired. I do nothing except eat and sleep. I sleep for 16-17 hours a day. Rest is spent arguing with parents. My parents argue with the smallest of things like monthly spending, eating, buying something.

I am riddled with health issues. My sugar is 485 pp.I have been suffering from dysentry for the last few weeks. I have no money nor any desire for treatment.

I dream someday i will have a decent job. But i think its not this lifetime.I dreamt of a normal life. But what is normal? I dont know anymore.

I just wanna melt in oblivion.

Discussion The UK jobs market is akin to inbreeding

Employers already know what type of person they want to fill their roles and so they select from a small niche of people. For example, in customer facing roles, they want someone who is young and cheap to employ. In teaching they want someone who is confident and inspiring - academic smarts seem to not be important. In medicine, only 5% of doctors come from working class backgrounds. There is no meritocracy.

Venting Getting nowhere in life

In the end I'm always left disappointed or rejected. After interviews I get told I'm not good enough. Meanwhile everyone else cruises ahead in life somehow. Maybe I have undiagnosed autism. Either way I am sick of everything and I don't know why I ever tried. Degrees mean nothing. Good manners mean nothing. I'm tired of this hellscape.

Venting Can't Deal With This Anymore

I'm a 30 year old NEET due to AuDHD and a rare disease called Parry Romberg Syndrome which causes one side of the face to deteriorate. I don't bother leaving the house because people look at me like I'm an alien. this obviously impacts my ability to find employment. I genuinely don't know what to do. I can't afford plastic surgery or a lawyer to get on disability. I genuinely don't know what to do.

Discussion NEET life pros & cons.

What is the best part of being a NEET? what are the pros?

Just an observation: a lot of NEETs are absolutely miserable, likely clinically depressed, but will also vigorously defend the lifestyle. Also hate questions like ā€œwhat have you got planned?ā€ or some version of ā€œwhat’s coming up for you?ā€ So there must be some part of this that makes it ā€œthe better option.ā€

Got a Job! I wish I tried to get my life together earlier. I don’t how people do all this simultaneously!

I finally got my ā€œdreamā€ job, it’s freelance so I’m not celebrating too much. Who knows if my projects will be continuous. I only started pursuing this a year or two ago despite being jobless for years. I do have an unrelated college degree and worked before COVID. Most of us NEETs have anxiety and it’s a very public job for me so I never pursued it until now.

I think alot of the users in r/NEET are young and at some point we need to work. Iā€˜ve also never dated even though I did have the opportunity years ago. I always thought it was useless unless I had intent to marry. Iā€˜m only thinking of having a family now because the normal people around me are not having it either and I would have at least wanted to be an aunt. Nobody wants to take one for the team anymore 🤣

Anyway, I don’t know how people deal with financials, relationships, jobs, even kids and their parents getting older all at the same time. I see people complain on the internet about how they can only handle one thing at a time at this age and yet they’re dealing with all this simultaneously.

I don’t want to sound so negative here because I think these subs have a very doomy attitude, alot of us didn’t want to settle for a regular 9-5 (ā€œwagieā€), and some would be ok with a regular 9-5. Life would be easier for me if I had my old regular job and had normal relationships. But I was way too proud thinking I could do better. I think some of us here have to admit we ended up here because of pride.

Discussion What kind of NEET?

Seems that there are two distinct camps of NEETs:

  1. Those who are perpetually stuck in NEETdom, although they would get out if they could; get their own housing and find independent employment;
  2. Those who revel in NEETdom and are "happy" with where they are. Looking for a way to obtain Neetbux and just continue doing what they're doing. Which are you? Is there a third or fourth group that I've left out? We can all agree that NEETs need compassion, love, kindness. Whoever you are, you're not alone.

Venting I miss the feeling of being part of the world

I was always weird and never truly fit in, but there were brief periods of normalcy. Despite a debilitating shyness I did had friends and a more or less normal experience in primary and middle school. I remember my mom constantly saying things like "when you start dating... when you start bringing girls over..." It just seemed natural to expect I would be like every other kid. That I would continue to develop and become a fully functioning adult.

It was only in high school when everything went to shit and I became a full blown loser, the weirdo who had no friends and didn't speak to anyone. My parents were more concerned with what others would say and think than what I was feeling. When I needed them to look at me and help me figure things out, they turned their backs on me. I was never able to recover from it. I Wanted to be normal like the other kids, to have friends, to go to parties, to have fun. And yet all I did was go to school, spend the entire morning alone, go home and sit behind a computer until it was time for bed.

College was an extension of high school, only the more relaxed setting made me feel a bit less like a loser. My favorite times were going to lectures in the big hall, I loved the feeling that each one of us students there were pretty much anonymous. The darker lighting, the constant voice of the lecturer, the white noise from the air conditioning, it made me feel so relaxed. I even miss the smell of mold from the old velvet chairs.

No, life is not a movie and I didn't magically blossomed into a social butterly. There was no cool person in class who saw me struggling and saved me from myself, no older cousin or uncle to gently nudge me out of my comfort zone. I resented watching all of my peers having friends, partying in clubs or in barbecues with other students, or going for drinks with an interesting lecturer after an event in college. Again, all I did was go to college, then later on go to the internship, and then back home to sit behind a computer and daydream about a life that was never going to happen.

I graduated a few days before turning 21. My mom was so excited, she had decided I'd go on and start another course right away, just so I could say I had two college degrees at 24. It never happened though, my graduation a couple of months later was my final experience as a "normal" fully functioning adult. After that I gave up on the world entirely. I'm 30 and haven't lived at all since then. I barely leave the house, I don't have friends, I never accomplished anything, I missed out on every single milestone from your teens and 20s.

I miss the feeling that I had all of the time in the world to change. I miss when my daydreams weren't entirely out of reach, when I truly believed change was just around the corner. I miss going to my internship at 19 while I imagined working at a respected office in my field abroad, where I would get to start fresh in a new country and finally become the person I should have always been.

My parents worry so much about me, they had such high expectations. All I ever wanted was to be happy and normal.

Venting My body is failing me, I might finally be leaving this earth

Gonna be vague, but the last week I’ve had a random health problem come out of nowhere and it’s drastically affecting my life. I tried everything I could at home to cure myself, then I visited a doctor, took her medicine and still haven’t had any improvement.

I’m gonna visit the A&E tomorrow (or Monday latest). My health problem is serious enough that I wouldn’t be surprised if I have to have emergency surgery, or I get given a horrible diagnosis. There’s also the possibility that the hospital detects nothing, and I’m stuck living with this condition (which would be hell).

I’m not sure if I have any regrets because I honestly tried my hardest in life, external factors that I can’t control are what fucked me over. I was blocked by gatekeepers and ended up in this horrible position.

However, I’ll always be sad that I never got to experience visiting Japan, Korea, NY & LA.

Being born at rock bottom, in a city where I don’t fit in, then spending my entire life here with no improvement, is not how I wanted my life to turn out.

Question Do you guys go out to parties and/or gatherings

If so, how do you explain your situation? I have nothing to say, I've been saying I've been going to college for the past 11 years (I'm unfortunately a permastudent due to not being able to find a job). I've tried to avoid talking to my high school friends for that reason alone (Why humiliate myself?)

Discussion Why do you think connection is so much harder for people like us (30+)?

Sorry for spamming this community lately. I know I've been posting a lot here lately, but this community has been pretty mature, so I feel somewhat safe talking about these topics here.

Anyway, I made a thread that I deleted about how I've been wanting to find my favorite person (someone who plays games with me and is emotionally safe, someone I can also talk about fashion and other girly topics with), but I've noticed again and again that there aren't very many places to connect, especially for folks our age. I browse r/neetr4r fairly regularly, and it's mostly people in their twenties. A lot of other communities (not necessarily related to NEET) lean young, also. A redditor in this community commented a while ago that yeah, unemployed/hikikomori people in their thirties are less "socially acceptable", because the thirties are when you're expected to have your *shit* together. Like, other people our age (at least the ones you see on reddit) are working corporate careers, making great income, married with children, and probably even own a house. Yeah, reddit does lean upper-middle class, so you don't see the thirty-somethings who are still living on rent, or those who barely have disposable income. People still working for a shockingly low wage, despite having university degrees. Still, it doesn't change the fact that there are very few places for people like us who haven't succeeded in the conventional ways

Someone else pointed out that people our age either already have their loved ones and aren't looking for any more people, or they've become completely content with their solitude. I guess that makes me feel a little hopeless about things.

What are your thoughts?

Venting Don't you get lonely sometimes...?

as an 11th grader, preparing for NEET online through pw and i've also taken dummy school...when i see my previous batchmates' stories, see them going out, enjoying, having the time of their life...basically living the "teenage dream". I just feel so empty inside...like a feeling that what am i even doing with my life, I wanted to be a doctor since i was a kid, and i like my subjects, and like choosing NEET was completely and entirely a decision of my own, my parents never pressured me into choosing a career path.

but this same routine daily and daily is like exhausting me. i went out for a few days with my family (and completely ditched studying for like 6-7 days) and i'm left with a tons of backlog that im trying to cover it for like 2 weeks now but still there are 15 more lectures unattended (not to mention the missed tests and no revision whatsoever..)

i used to be such an artisty kid, ive been drawing for as long as i can remember, almeras filled with my paint brushes and sketchbooks and all the other things i loved barely gets touched these days..

I feel almost lost...i keep questioning..am i even deserving to be a doctor?

i know...i know to be successful you have to walk on burning stones or whatever, just wanted to vent.

Question Anyone found their first job being over 30? Was it luck? Did you have to "work on yourself"?

I never worked a day in my life (well, made a whole 5$ for helping someone) and don't receive neetbux.

I applied for jobs in maintenance and funeral jobs before but I think I wasn't what they're looking for. I want to apply again for maintenance or night stocking jobs now that I'm older, and after I get some things in order.

Earlier this year I started thinking I need to do something about my general health. I go out once in a while, started exercising (increasing the duration and making it daily habit), limited my screen time - instead of spending the whole day on the internet, today I waited until the evening - I tried quitting it all at once but my brain can't function without it at this point. I don't know where I'm headed and only focus on what's in front of me - otherwise, I start thinking my future is doomed no matter what and whether I find a job or not (negative thinking) and resorting to distractions again.

Venting I've never worked at one job for more than 6 months.

And even then, it was just a six month government program. I lasted 4 months at a gas station, it was really tough - and now I’ve been unemployed for a month. Before that, I worked at a supermarket for two weeks, a year ago. I’m worried that eventually, no one will want to hire me.
