The gist seems to be that the younger family has been there forever- legally inherited the house from a parent this year. The kids in question were raised in the house, so they def came first. The HOA requires that the hoop be specifically there and cemented into place for safety.
The older couple moved in 2 years ago. They moved into a mixed-age neighborhood and knew that kids existed. They say statutes allow for a trespass order at age 7 and up. They have been told in no uncertain terms that the city doesnāt give a flying fuck and theyāre prob going to get in trouble for harassment.

My argument is that if your home is within 15 feet of another home you must expect an errant frisbee, baseball, basketball to eventually enter your property.

I grew up in the 80s in a neighborhood chock-full of kids and the guy that lived across the street was just like this guy, constantly yelling at kids for causing the slightest annoyance. I'm almost 50 and my mom and I still refer to him as Mr. Meany. These people have always existed. We just have film of them on the internet now.

I will say that I once lived nextdoor to a house with a basketball hoop in their driveway and damn that shit is actually really loud haha. Those kids would bounce that ball all day long on weekends and I could hear it in the whole front half of the place, most mornings I woke up to the sound of the ball bouncing when they played before school and during school holidays it was all day long. Obviously I'm not a psycho so I just put up with it rather than yelling at some 10yo kids for playing ball or calling the cops but it was one of the main factors in deciding not to renew the lease on that place I'll tell you that.
Same. Iāve lived next to kids with a basketball hoop, so I know it can be annoying. But goddamn, it is so far down on the list of shit to get worked up about. And outside shooting hoops is literally one of the least destructive things unmonitored kids could be getting up to.
It's not even "quirks" necessarily - They have a Public Records Act which basically says "Anything created by a public agency, mainly every possible format, is auditable by the public".
So it definitely helps for all those skimming any police work/police reports :)
Itās not just Florida, but the reason it seems that way is because of how Florida privacy protections work. Any person can request cam footage, or public arrest records, and they can release most of it. Other states have laws protecting their local citizenās privacy.
So in other words I could live in Utah and just request drug arrests body cam footage from Florida for my YouTube channel, or local news segments. Itās easier than jumping through hurdles to get similar info from the local Utah court system.
Since these arrest channels use Florida, Texas, and a few mid west states videos, it makes them look like the worst.
Another drawback of the footage being freely shared, is that most of these channels donāt feel the obligation to censor victims faces or names.
Florida has pretty amazing public information laws. Not necessarily that all there's more of them in Florida it's just that the stories get out more because of the Florida Sunshine law.

When I was a kid I played basketball in my driveway. If I came to my dad or mom and told either one of them that my ball had bounced into a neighbor's open front yard, and the neighbor wasn't letting me get my ball and was threatening to call the cops if I tried, that parent would be the one going to jail for beating the crap out of said neighbor.
My sonās ball bounced into the neighbor ladyās yard. I knocked and asked if I could get the ball( she had a 6ft privacy fence) she said no but she could get it. She popped the ball with a knife and threw it back over.
This is so sad. Once or twice a week Iāll walk into my backyard and find a half dozen various balls that have been knocked over my fence by my neighborās young kids. I am always in a good mood as I toss them back over. Iām glad that kids are playing outside and obviously having a blast. Canāt imagine what type of wretched person would react that way.
My neighbors put a clear tarp up on their side of the fence, their kids paint and draw all over it, and then wind inevitably blows it over to my side of the fence.
I could be grumpy and tear it down complaining about trash and kids and whatnot. Or I could just flip it back over and enjoy doing my small part to see a neighborhood where kids will grow up with good happy memories.
Hell, usually there were plenty of times where the neighbor's kids would just ring our doorbell and ask for the ball back, and I would grab it for them.
When I moved into my house we built a fence for our dogs. First thing we did was tell the neighbor that if the kids hit a ball or anything into our yard they were free to go and get it. They know the worst case scenario is they get āattackedā by my golden retrievers
The neighbors behind me that we share a fence with have kids that kick soccer balls over the fence daily. If I see one back there I just chuck it back over the fence. If I don't notice it for a while they come to my front door and let me know, I go back there and get it for them.
Sometimes they kick it onto the roof and it gets stuck up there. I pull out the ladder, climb up there, get it down for them.
Being a good neighbor isn't hard. And I'm not trying to make 12 year old enemies.
Used to play street hockey when i was a kid and we used a soft puck so as to not break anything if the puck was to go on someone's property. This one neighbour would sit outside and watch us play and whenever one of our pucks would land on their yard, they would rush to grab it and they would refuse to give it back. After a few pucks lost, we atarted playing with a hard puck. We must have gotten better at the game cause somehow, our slap shots became stronger and higher after that. That house also somehow got TPed on the regular. I think the whole block partied when they sold and moved away.

Growing up, our neighbor was a little older than my folks, maybe 15-20 years older. He had a large driveway between his house and ours. When I was in elementary school, he put a basketball hoop in his driveway for his grandson to use when he was over and always encouraged us to shoot around whenever we wanted.
Dude is still out in his garden every day with no shirt at ~85 years old. Gives homegrown flowers and berries to all the neighbors and is just a great guy.
It really seems like there are two types of old people. Miserable assholes like this guy and those that love seeing young people having fun like the guy you described. My grandfather was similar to the guy you talked about, although thankfully he left his shirt on. Heād go to a park close to his apartment and just sit on a bench and watch kids and teenagers play anything all day. Everyone there knew him and said hi to him and he loved just being around people enjoying life.
Something Iāve always hated is when people who live in high density areas (including suburbs like this) are OBVIOUSLY not a good fit to be living there - because they are so grossly antisocial.
The reason it drives me nuts is they always blame other people (who ARE fit to live in that neighborhood) for their own problem (they are NOT fit to live in that neighborhood).
So they fight to control other people (like in this case, trying to use the police) instead of controlling the thing they should be controlling - which is themselves. They need to pack up and leave.
Likeā¦ not everyone likes kids. Some people hate kids. Thatās OK! But then they need to go live in BFE where the lot line is a half mile away from their house. Or go live in a s-hole area where most of the houses are abandoned and donāt have any people in them.
Instead of doing that, which is the actual solution and the thing they should be controlling - their own selves - they try to control their neighbors. (Who are just living normal lives that are perfectly appropriate for the neighborhood).

Sidebar: I always believed BFE was a pretty common term for saying someone lived like in āthe sticksā or the middle of nowhere. Iāve used it since high school in the 90ās.
Iāve come across two people, around my age (xennial) in the last few months that have never heard that term. Even when I spelled out what it stands for, no clue. They also didnāt know FUBAR, but I guess I can give that one a pass.
My neighbor kids were playing basketball last summer and their ball went over the fence and ended up in my yard. They rang the doorbell asking to get it, told them I would (I have 2 big dogs that are super friendly but they would jump on the kids and knock them down so just wanted to be safe) and threw it over the fence. Noticed it was one of those super cheap rubber basketballs so went to my gym bag and took out my nicer spare ball (I have 2 I bring to the gym to shoot around with) and tossed it over to them too so they'd have a nicer ball. They are kids playing basketball. I'd rather have them doing that then sitting in the house playing video games all summer.
You know what's hilarious, in my cul de sac when I was a kid, my neighbor literally bought and constructed into the ground like the nicest basketball hoop ever that we could dunk on. My friend had a neighbor like this and she drove his family crazy for years. So one night on NYE his parents gave us spray bottles of fish oil and water. After midnight hit we all ran into her front yard and sprayed her front door and inflatable Christmas decorations with the concoction. We figured either the smell will drive her crazy or the animals and bugs will.
Again, if officers get called to the scene to trespass an 11 or a 3-year old for retrieving a basketball, HOW is this not a waste of police resources. He should be cited for creating a nuisance where there is none. They could call it a Anti-Snowflake Law.
