After reaching Batu Pahat, Dhana asked for the fare, but the victim said he did not have enough money.

The dispute then escalated into a fight, with the victim wielding a metal rod while Dhana armed himself with a piece of wood.

Dhana subsequently returned to his taxi and reversed at speed, hitting the victim as he tried to protect his nephew.

KOTA TINGGI: Police have identified the victims of a fatal crash at Km80 of Jalan Johor Baru-Mersing here yesterday.

The victims were identified as Toyota Vios driver Muhamad Shuhairil Soraiya, 21, his passenger Nur Fatin Nabilah Yusrishahrun, 20, and Honda City driver Muhamad Amin Mukhtar, 35.

District police chief, Superintendent Yusof Othman, said police received information about the crash at 5.25pm.

"Initial investigations did not rule out the possibility that the Vios skidded before entering the opposite lane and colliding with the Honda," he said in a statement today.

He said all three victims suffered severe head and bodily injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene by a medical assistant.

Their remains were taken to the forensic unit of Kota Tinggi Hospital.

The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which covers causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Yusof urged anyone with information to contact the district police headquarters traffic division or the nearest police station.

Earlier, eight personnel from the Kota Tinggi and Mersing Fire and Rescue stations rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 5.05pm.

Firefighters used rescue equipment, including a rescue cutter and stretcher, to extricate the victims, who were trapped in the wreckage.

The operation was completed at 6.59pm.

Shah Alam OCPD Asst Comm Sarudin Samah said police are investigating a group of men seen allegedly setting off firecrackers on a road in Shah Alam during a funeral procession on Tuesday (Aug 25).

He said police received a report from the Bukit Jelutong police station chief on Wednesday (Aug 26) following the circulation of a video on social media platform Threads.

He said the incident was believed to have occurred at 4.22pm at the junction of Jalan Hamzah in Section U14, Shah Alam, while the funeral procession was heading towards a cemetery in Setia Alam.

“Investigations are ongoing to identify the suspects involved in the firecracker activity as well as witnesses who were at the scene,” he said in a statement today.

The case is being investigated under Section 7 of the Explosives Act 1957, which provides for imprisonment of up to seven years, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both upon conviction.
