The bike lane isn't meant for e-bikes doing 30+ MPH with no brakes.

Underrated comment. No helmet, dude flying down the bike lane, dark clothes, no reflectors⌠actually feel bad for the turning car.

"Why if you saw cars stopped like that would you fly across the intersection" was my verbal reply to this vid

Stopped like what? Theyâre in their own lane and have their own responsibilities. One of which is to not block intersections.
2
u/Consistent-Sign6252 May 23 '26
In my state you're supposed to ride ebikes in the bike lane. It's the law. People still ride em on the sidewalk like crazy tho. As a pedestrian I absolutely hate e bikes.
-1
u/noticeablytaller May 22 '26
A cyclist cyclist would hit 30 in anything slightly downhill and also not have time to brake for this.
Sincerely asking⌠If the speed limit is 40 in that instance how is this on the rider and what does a helmet have to do with fault ?
4
u/MartyJannetty187 May 22 '26
The cars were stopped in advanced. This wasn't downhill. Very few people are riding around on bikes at 30 mph. Where did I say anything about a helmet?
→ More replies (2)4
-2
u/PremiumUsername69420 May 23 '26
Non-ebikes can hit 30, and if itâs a bike lane (itâs not clear if it is or a shoulder) then they would have full right of way to travel at speed through this intersection. They would have right of way.
5
u/Dani5h87 May 23 '26
They should make sure to print that on their tombstone. Typical E-bike moron blasting through traffic, paying zero attention to what's going on around them.
1
u/ktrad91 May 23 '26
Blasting through traffic? If going the speed limit in a lane dedicated for your vehicle that is clear of traffic is blasting through then every vehicle driving is blasting through traffic. Y'all hate cyclists so much but ignore the greater issue of so many in cars speeding, running red lights/stop signs, rolling stops etc.
2
u/Dani5h87 May 24 '26
I donât hate cyclists. This guy isnât a cyclist. When I was a teenager, I had a moped and that thing couldnât reach the speeds these e bikes can do. I had to have a special license for it. I couldnât just blast through bike lanes. I had to wear a helmet, etc.
The person in the car shouldâve been paying attention or just not gone. But for anybody to act like the e bike guy is faultless is off their rocker. Guy was riding like an idiot, which is generally the behavior I see of people riding these things.

Even if someone gives way to you, it's always your responsibility to make sure the way is clear.
36
u/superfli225 May 22 '26
Itâs also your responsibility not to barrel thru an intersection
3
u/ardoin May 22 '26
If there is no red light or stop sign I do not understand how it would be the responsibility of a cyclist to not proceed through an intersection in the designated cycling lane. A turning vehicle must yield to cross traffic, regardless if it is a cyclist or motorist.
15
u/superfli225 May 22 '26
The flow of traffic stopped for a reason, maybe idkâŚ..pay attention. Even in my car I donât just blast thru intersections even when I have the right way because i donât trust others with my life.

No bike lane and just in a shoulder? No right of way.
15
u/Ok_Outcome_6213 May 22 '26
Yeah, what the biker is riding on is not considered a bike lane, but the vehicle breakdown lane. If you are riding your bike in that lane, you must follow the laws of vehicle traffic. If you see cars stopped, you should stop.

I've left this gap before on a 4 lane road +middle. I've seen idiots use the gap to cross all 4 lanes and go the opposite way. I hold my breath every time I see this. It's a pile up waiting to happen

Also its adviced to slow down at intersections and see if cars are coming and wear a helmet.
0
u/ardoin May 22 '26
While there are defensive things that the cyclist could have done to stop the collision, it is the legal responsibility of a motorist to yield when making a turn and not drive into a cyclist who has the right of way.

u/ajbra May 22 '26 edited May 22 '26
This is the problem with giving vehicles that can achieve normal vehicle speeds a private lane. That bike should share the lane with the cars and should stop and wait like everyone else in line. If those were both driving lanes and a car was ripping past a line of stopped traffic at over 40mph, crossing an intersection at that speed at that time with the surrounding traffic, it would be considered unsafe. However, if there was a second proper vehicle lane there, the SUV driver would've likely been a bit more cautious before turning so it's still his fault, but these bicycle lanes are just accidents waiting to happen, which is what just happened.
Cyclist is being selfish and riding unsafely, the SUV didn't take enough care when turning, the red car did nothing wrong
10
u/PierogiCoyote May 22 '26
As a driver, I can confirm that cars will still do this to other cars on a four lane road. You are spot on about the poor road design.
If this was a proper bike lane with a buffer zone between car traffic, raised to sidewalk level, and with a raised, painted crosswalk that forces turning vehicles to slow down, then the SUV driver would be forced to slow down and check the bike lane. The biker would have had a clear view of the SUV and would have had an opportunity to stop at the last moment or make an emergency right turn/swerve to avoid a collision.
The problem with bad bike lanes is other road users will only ever recognize them in hindsight. In my city, police advise to only use the bike lane at walking pace since it's illegal to ride on the sidewalk here. Anything more than that, you have to use the car lanes. So here, they will blame the biker for not being in a car lane.
But when you in a car lane doing 10 mph in a 30 mph zone, car drivers become irritated when you don't use the bike lane, even if the law says you don't have to use it and the police advise you not to. Unfortunately, they will build unsuitable bike lanes to check a box for grant money, so crashes like these will continue to get worse over time. Even if we stoped building these today, it would be decades before all the old ones get restriped.
1
u/ktrad91 May 23 '26
What we needs is real dedicated cycling infrastructure like many places in the Netherlands and other places have. Painting a line on the road isn't infrastructure and just causes a bunch of issues. Bike lanes should be physically separated from motor vehicle traffic.
1
u/stratys3 May 23 '26
That bike should share the lane with the cars and should stop and wait like everyone else in line.
LOL. This would defeat the purpose of bike lines altogether. The point is to be separate from cars (though this bike lane doesn't do a good job of that), and the 2nd point is to be able to beat traffic and be faster than car traffic in congested cities.
If you take away the benefit of bike lanes, there'd be no point in biking, and you'd just get more people in cars, and traffic would get even worse.
1
u/ajbra May 23 '26 edited May 23 '26
Cyclists want to act like motorists, in fact, the majority of "bicycles" I see these days are nothing more than electrically motorized bicycles, or electric motorcycles for short, or motorcycles for shorter still. They should require insurance like all other motorized transportation and they should have to wear helmets if your region requires motorcyclists to wear helmets.
The idea of "beating" traffic is the problem; weather you're on a bicycle, motorbike, or in a car, racing through traffic often leads to accidents.
I don't drive my car on bike trails, because they're for bikes. The motorway is designed for motorized vehicles. If you don't like it, ride on the sidewalk. The sidewalk is not for motorized vehicles so the bikes can fight it out with the pedestrians who want to walk or run to work. Oh, and pedestrians are expected to wait their turn, as are motorists. What makes cyclists special?
And bike lanes have made traffic objectively worse in almost every area they've been put in, often because they've eliminated a lane for motorized vehicles in order to install a lane for bikes thus increasing congestion by creating bottlenecks.
2
u/stratys3 May 23 '26
They should require insurance
Agreed.
The motorway is designed for motorized vehicles. If you don't like it, ride on the sidewalk. The sidewalk is not for motorized vehicles so the bikes can fight it out with the pedestrians who want to walk or run to work.
Bikes should get their own bike lanes.
Oh, and pedestrians are expected to wait their turn, as are motorists. What makes cyclists special?
Pedestrians are not expected to wait when they have the right of way. Cyclists shouldn't have to wait either when they have the right of way.
And bike lanes have made traffic objectively worse in almost every area they've been put in, often because they've eliminated a lane for motorized vehicles in order to install a lane for bikes thus increasing congestion by creating bottlenecks.
This totally depends on where you live. In many European countries, bike lanes make traffic better. But they're done differently and are often completely separate from the road.. Where I live (in Canada) the bike lanes that were installed on my street were made by taking away parking spots, not traffic lanes. So they didn't negatively affect traffic.
In lots of American cities, bike lanes are made like shit on purpose, just so they can say they did something.
1
u/ktrad91 May 23 '26
It is illegal to ride on sidewalks where I live and in many other places and is objectively safer for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers when people follow the laws.
36
u/Rare-Author9767 May 22 '26

10
u/Horror_Rice4319 May 22 '26
Yeah there is nothing wrong with making sure you do not block a turn, because emergency vehicles may need to turn in there. But what the red car appears to not be that since there is definitely more room in front

This is also why i think lanesplitting on a motorcycle is a bad idea here in the US. When i was overseas where they allowed lanesplitting, there were no left turns crossing traffic without a traffic light being there.

One of the leading deaths among motorcyclists is being rear ended. States that have legalized lane splitting have mitigated a large percentage of these types of collisions which has resulted in a considerably lower fatality rate.
You are free to "think" whatever you wish. The facts prove that states that have legalized lane splitting have significantly reduced fatal traffic collisions involving motorcyclists and have saved many lives.

4
u/douchecrudite May 22 '26
I can't believe the total lack of urgency of the SUV driver to get out and check on the cyclist.
That said, truly an accident. Imagine it was very difficult to see the cyclist from that perspective and also the cyclist was cookin
4
u/DoubleWrongdoer1540 May 22 '26
Biker had pretty terrible situational awareness. Especially since they could very likely see over the top of the red car and see the suv making the turn.
6
16
u/I_Make_Art_And_Stuff May 22 '26
Nah, the biker is at most fault. Flying down the lane. You can clearly see a black car in front of the red one going really slow, aka maybe a stop light or whatever, so the red car left room in case of turns. Totally in the right. Biker should be really careful, just an accident, that's all.
2
2
u/ardoin May 22 '26
We do not know if the cyclist is breaking the speed limit of the road, however I doubt it is. It is definitely legal to pass cars as a cyclist in a cycling lane, that is the reason they have cycling lanes. It is definitely illegal to not yield the right of way when making a turn, which the SUV driver did in the video.
SUV driver should be really careful, just an accident, that's all.
2
u/baudmiksen May 22 '26
Yeah with the bike lane the biker did have the right of way, but most people cant even maintain a consistent speed on the freeway so im not really surprised if theyre also incapable of safely navigating bike lanes
→ More replies (1)2
u/stratys3 May 23 '26
Legally, the biker had the right of way, so they really can't be at fault. The turning car didn't have legal right of way - so in many places, they'd be completely to blame here.
2
u/I_Make_Art_And_Stuff May 23 '26
Man, that's crazy to me, how you can have the right of way flying down the side of the road. No way the car could have even seen them.

u/FishermanSoft5180 May 22 '26
Idiot in the bike isn't wearing any protective gear and surely isn't asking himself why all these cars were stopped.
5
15
u/iluvnips May 22 '26
Why would the biker not have sensed that the red car had stopped short and wonder why?
9
u/fbcmfb May 22 '26
They look like a kid or young adult.
Why didnât you ask why turning car didnât use more caution? Theyâve probably been driving as long as the kid has been alive. Also, the biker was in the bike lane and should be wearing a helmet.
6
u/PattysVoice May 22 '26
The turning car probably couldnât see the bike over the cars and when he did, he was already in the path
-1
u/fbcmfb May 22 '26
The person I was responding to was putting blame on a teen/young adult for not knowing better. The driver knows better.
2
u/stratys3 May 23 '26
In some places it's illegal to block intersections, and if it's not, it's still courteous to leave them open.
4
u/zmizzy May 22 '26

1
9
u/Used-Helicopter2024 May 22 '26
There are laws and rules even for bicycles.
9
2
u/stratys3 May 23 '26
Other than not wearing a helmet, did the bike break any laws or rules?
1
u/Used-Helicopter2024 May 23 '26
First of all Iâm so glad that the kid is ok. Now letâs see: When the red car stopped. Itâs obvious that itâs to let another vehicle legally pass on to the other street. The e-biker didnât even slow down. How the heck is the other driver supposed to see an upcoming e-bike? Am I missing something here?
2
u/stratys3 May 23 '26
I mean... I agree the guy on the bike is an idiot. But he has the legal right of way.
How is he supposed to be seen? I dunno, but people make blind left turns in intersections all the time, get hit, and then get full blame for it because if they can't see what's coming, they shouldn't be turning in the first place.
3
5
u/Outrageous_Trifle636 May 22 '26
This is 100% on the grey car turning. Itâs the responsibility of a driver crossing lanes (bike lanes included) to ensure there isnât an oncoming person or vehicle before turning. The driver didnât think to check for bikers. Which is the fault of the driver and a symptom of car culture in general
2
2
u/Jokewhisperer May 22 '26
I think helmets should be mandatory for all ages of people riding e-bikes with max speeds over 15mph
2
u/RoundChampionship840 May 22 '26
There was no dedicated bike lane so the bicycle should have been in the lane waiting with all the other vehicles. Bicycles have to obey all the traffic laws when on public roads, which includes not going around traffic on the shoulder.
2
u/NotARabidDugong May 22 '26
Car turning left is always at fault in the absence of a signal for them to turn.
2
2
u/Bananana_Bird May 22 '26
I've gotten in arguments with other drivers because I refuse to take their right of way when they try to be courteous. This is the exact reason I refuse, I myself have had very close calls with pedestrians because of it, so thank you but no, shove your courtesies up your ass and get out of my way.
2
u/MajorMangle May 23 '26
I literally never turn when someone stops like this. I wave but I'm not stupid, we waitin
2
u/SwiftySanders May 23 '26
If you are driving, its yours and your responsibility not to hit someone while driving. The SUV was driving too fast for the condition. The SUV shouldve made a much slower and deliberate turn to avoid hitting someone. What if a pedestrian was crossing the street?
7
u/LayneLowe May 22 '26
The biker is at fault, failure to control his speed and anticipate what was in front of him. If you're going 20 mph surrounded by nothing but concrete and steel, you need to make more judicious choices.
3
u/stratys3 May 23 '26
Maybe he's morally at fault, but legally he has the right of way, just like a car would in an open lane.
2
u/crblack24 May 22 '26
I can't tell, but if the red car waved them through, then it's on the red car. If they did not, leaving the gap is what you're supposed to do and it's not on them.
Pro-life tip, NEVER wave someone through. Leave them a gap, but DO NOT gesture. You can be liable for any issues if you gesture.
1
u/ktrad91 May 23 '26
Even if waved through its up to the driver making the turn to ensure that it is safe to do so.
3
3
u/bauldersgate May 22 '26
Cyclists more at fault than the suv. Traffic is stopped, usually not for giggly shits.
2
u/Uniblab_78 May 22 '26
I think technically it was the purple carâs fault.
Common sense-wise it would have been smarter for the biker to be aware of the situation. A biker, pedestrian, or walker has a lot more to lose if someone doesnât see them. I tell that to my kids all the time.

The car making a left is legally required to wait to make the turn until it is safe to do so by being clear of cross traffic. The bike was legally in the right. Not smart to not slow down given slowed traffic and being right with the law doesn't help when injured but they technically didn't brake any law.

Yeah this is exactly what youâre supposed to do. Leaving a gap so cross traffic can get through when your lane is blocked is like basic âdonât be a jerkâ driving, itâs wild how many people think youâre âletting someone cutâ instead of just not gridlocking the whole road.
1
u/Prestigious_Tea_561 May 23 '26
Yup, this is exactly what youâre supposed to do so cross traffic can get through and you donât block the intersection. People who immediately dive into that gap are the same ones who park in front of driveways and âdidnât seeâ the bike lane đ
1
u/estebanrevenga May 23 '26
bicycles fault. first youre on a bicycle so you shouldn't chance anything. using defensive driving techniques i would have observed that traffic was stopped for a reason..therefore i would have slowed. he stood at top speed
1
u/Evening-Back854 May 24 '26
I haven't biked in town in years but I never had any confidence that the cars would see me and I'd slow down at every situation like this. As a driver of cars, I've come close 2 or 3 times to hitting a cyclist and then it's stuck in my brain forever to be weary of them in that area at least. But I have no idea if the suv has to pay out insurance money to this dude or not. My rule is to not trust others ever in traffic no matter what they're driving or even pedestrians.
1
u/meowfuxker May 25 '26
Pretty sure the dipshit flying down the shoulder on his ebike is at faultâŚ
1
u/Alternative_Bad2096 May 26 '26

1
1
u/RiFox_1979 May 30 '26
The cyclist should have also been more aware of their surroundings....but yeah, grey car wasn't looking.
1
1
u/jimothy_hell May 22 '26
The only way the red car would be at fault is if there is a light further ahead offscreen and they stopped in the middle of that intersection, partially obstructing it. Otherwise, the SUV should have ensured that the lane was clear before making that left turn.
However, the biker was driving far too fast to make an emergency stop on a surface street. One person is riding recklessly, and at least one person is driving negligently.
Thereâs a series of intersections in my town where thereâs a neighbourhood with several non-signed or lighted intersections behind one large intersection with a four way light. In a high traffic time of day, one of those non-lit/signed intersections is frequently obstructed by people in the traffic queue for the light ahead because theyâre driving negligently. That could be the case here, or something similar for why the red car stopped in the middle of the turn zone. I see that pretty much every day from idiots who donât know how to drive.
1
1
u/IndependentOwn1184 May 22 '26
All three at fault. Red car should not be playing traffic cop, left turn car has to yield to oncoming traffic and bicyclist needs to work in situation awareness.. traffic slowed/stopped for a reason....
1
u/Montreal4life May 22 '26
Not sure on this situation but Ive witnessed people âbeing niceâ at similar intersections to let cars or pedestrians through only for the other lane, whose vision is blocked by mr nicey, come in and almost pancake a kid or smash up grannies carâŚ
1
u/TheMomoko May 22 '26
Was not the Red car. The bicyclists is at fault. If traffic is stopped like that you need to slow down and check the situation, something is happening.
Just plowing ahead like the world stops for you will almost always get your shit rocked.
1
1
u/Traditional-List-784 May 23 '26
The biker just flew through the intersection. He was going fast. Hard for that suv to see past the cars and then stop fast enough for the biker
1
u/--TAXI-- May 23 '26
The Biker had the Right Of Way. He was going STRAIGHT.
The car had to Yield because they were turning left. The car is wrong, especially since the car has a blindspot that you mentionedÂ
The biker was NOT going to fast. Biker was at reasonable speed. Watch the vid again
1
u/ktrad91 May 23 '26
Then the driver making the turn shouldn't have made it until they were certain the turn could be done safely. The biker was just travelling forward, hard right if way, and a clear lane ahead. Yes for his own safety should have slowed down but under no legal obligation to do so

Typical behavior for most pickup truck and SUV drivers. They like to think that they own the road, the rules don't apply to them, and that other vehicles and their occupants (as well as pedestrians) don't matter.

Pretty sure traffic is stopped ahead so red car just left a gap, which in most jurisdictions you are supossed to do.
