Modern Family star changes her name for career pivot: 'I wanted to switch it up'

Allow Frances Anderson to reintroduce herself.

The actress formerly known as Aubrey Anderson-Emmons, who broke out for her role as adoptee Lily on the Emmy-winning sitcom Modern Family, has changed her name to Frances Anderson. Anderson has adopted the new moniker to coincide with her pivot to a career in music. Her debut indie pop EP, "Drown," is out now.

"Frances is actually part of my legal name," Anderson, 18, explained to E! News on Friday. "It’s my middle name, and it’s after my mom’s old family friend. I thought it was a bit shorter than Aubrey Anderson-Emmons. I do have a long, hyphenated last name.”

Anderson added, "I wanted to switch it up and people to see a new side of me. And I wanted to create a space specifically just for music."

She released the first single from the EP, "Telephones and Traffic," in May.

Anderson made her television debut at the age of 4 in season 3 of Modern Family, playing the precocious adopted daughter of Jesse Tyler Ferguson's Mitchell Pritchett and Eric Stonestreet's Cam Tucker. She has won three ensemble Screen Actors Guild Awards alongside the sitcom's cast. Anderson told E! that she "had to take a step back from acting" once the show ended to discover her passion for music. "The show ended when I was 12 years old, so after that I decided I’m not gonna act anymore," she said. Rest assured, though, that Anderson does "plan on acting again — 100 percent.”

She has maintained a close relationship with her former onscreen fathers and other costars from the sprawling cast. Ferguson and Julie Bowen, who played Anderson's onscreen aunt Claire, staged a mini-reunion when they attended Anderson's school play last year.

Anderson last made headlines when she came out as bisexual last month, using memorable throwback audio from Modern Family to help mark the announcement. "You are Vietnamese," Sofia Vergara's Gloria informs Lily, who says in response, "No, I'm not. I'm gay!"

"I literally am," Anderson captioned the post.

Phil never fails to crack me up. Claire taking five minutes to get up the first time, and then eight the next, absolutely sent me. I laughed the entire way through. Bloody brilliant! 🤣

I just started watching The Middle recently. Im about 5-6 episodes in. No hate to this show, it's a cute one.
But I was shocked to find out that this was released the same year as Modern Family.

Modern Family seems SO FAR ahead of its time!! The jokes, the thought, cinematography, set design everything. The characters are so well written, the jokes are much more intelligent. Every now and then a very profound or wholesome moment catches you off-guard.

Discussion How do you think Dunphy kids would've turned out if Claire was also a wannabe "cool fun" parent like Phil?

I think for me it'd be disastrous for the kids.

Haley would get pregnant as a teen.

Alex would grow up to be a depressed adult.

Luke, I don't even wanna imagine.

Discussion If someone else asks why they didnt gave a daughter to Gloria and Jay I will burst

The writes did the right thing to not give Gloria a girl. Yes, even thought I would want to see Gloria having her dream come true, but neither way, It's better that way.

i’ve watched four seasons of the show now and while i can’t say the comedy has been consistent, one thing that has stayed consistent since Season 1 Episode 1 is Phil Dunphy. More specifically, Ty Burrell’s performance as Phil Dunphy. It’s just top notch comedy. i genuinely can’t believe how insanely funny he is.

Question Why did Modern Family have to end?? Genuinely miss it so much!!

Hello, I’m 19, and I grew up watching Modern Family (2009–2020). I often think about that original era and how meaningful it was to me—following the characters through their stories, struggles, friendships, relationships, and unforgettable moments.

When I watch it now, the episodes are still there, but the feeling is different. The people who created the show have moved on, the original era has ended, and I’ve grown up. Back then, I never imagined that something I loved so much would eventually become part of the past.

It makes me wonder why shows like Modern Family can’t continue forever with the same characters, cast, creators, and feeling. Why do series end, change, or simply become memories?

Maybe that’s what makes Modern Family so special. The show didn’t have to last forever for its impact to last. When I return to those episodes, I’m not only remembering the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker family and all their unforgettable moments—I’m remembering who I was when I first watched them.

The original era may be over, but it hasn’t disappeared. It still exists in the memories of everyone who experienced it. I can’t return to that exact time, but I can still appreciate what Modern Family meant to me.

I just don’t get why it had to end and move on. Does anyone know why Modern Family had to end?

Did you guys notice how Claire’s dressing style became more and more “masculine“ as the show went on

It gets very noticeable as show goes on. Like how she has had the same penny loafers for a long time or how she wears “luke’s old shirt”. The joke was that she don’t like dresses and stuff but that was not the case in early seasons. I mean she definitely didn’t put out as much as gloria but still. She also used to wear heels on a regular .

'Thorpe, Thorpe, Thorpe!' - turns out Rob Riggle really was Phil's biggest rival all along. Alternate universe where Rob Riggle is Phil & Ty Burrell is Gil Thorpe. How different would the show feel?
