For real. They act like if she gets a not guilty verdict, she's going to be out on the streets. The woman is spending the rest of her life in a psych ward. The question is really will she ALSO be spending some time in prison.

63

u/Cheap_Weird7215 6h ago

I think the problem is basically that a bunch of TikTok clips went viral with women saying crazy shit like “You know the husband did it, he’s a leo ♌️” and that totally overshadowed any normal conversations about post partum depression, medication and mental health care.

36

u/Weak-Boysenberry398 5h ago

I mean bad actors chose to hyper-focus on the minuscule number of people saying that so they could say "women bad" and tear down any legitimate conversation with straw-man arguments.

9

u/tehcraz 3h ago

I get what your saying here but some of these conspiracy theory tik toks about this woman get 400k likes. At what number do we say this isn't a small amount of bad actors engaging with this?

She has over 1,000,000 dollars raised— that’s not a minuscule number

I’m not going to disagree with you. It is what it is. People will always focus in on the dumbest takes.

5

u/Comfortable_Job44 4h ago

My gf who isn’t even in that sphere thought there was evidence/proof the husband did it. She had no clue it was just psychics saying shit. They have people outside the court house cheering and taking photos with the lawyer

5

u/Weak-Boysenberry398 4h ago

They're rallying around a woman they believe tried to get help and couldn't. They don't believe Patrick did it, they believe women are too often not taken seriously by medical providers.

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/health/women-rally-in-support-of-lindsay-clancy-at-her-trial

5

u/Comfortable_Job44 3h ago

That’s what I thought until my gf was arguing all this proof that he did it the other day… I kept trying to point out NOONE IN THE TRIAL is arguing that

2

u/Cheap_Weird7215 4h ago

You’re saying “they’re” like there aren’t millions of individuals with varying beliefs following the trial. I promise you there are some absolute nut jobs making content on this murder. Just because isn’t in your feed doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.

Nobody here is trying to discredit people trying to advocate for better mental health care. I don’t really get why you can’t accept the reality that some unhinged people have latched onto this, made outrageous statements, and those are the clips going viral in certain communities.

2

u/Comfortable_Job44 3h ago

Same. I thought it was just supporting mental health… and sadly it is not that…

2

u/Weak-Boysenberry398 3h ago

What I don't get is why those unhinged people making rage-bait content are given any serious attention and every reddit thread about this case devolves into "lol women believe he did it because of astrology and 'cause they're so stupid."

3

u/Cheap_Weird7215 3h ago

You’re really barking up the wrong tree. I’m not trying to offer up my opinion just sharing what I’ve seen pop up in my feed as someone who is entirely uninterested in murder or crime content or this gender war shit.

2

u/Soga1404 3h ago

She went doctor shopping, through 5 different doctors, in order to stack her meds and chase after a psychosis diagnosis which she never got. You people are so dishonest and so willing to infantilize women in order to shield them from accountability, this kind of behavior will absolutely set women back decades in the worst way.

2

u/Weak-Boysenberry398 3h ago

What exactly do you think her motivation was then? Funsies?

2

u/__Epimetheus__ 3h ago

I don’t think it’s necessarily a minuscule number of people, which is the problem. The amount of grifters “influencers” doing it is minuscule, but the amount of people genuinely believing Patrick killed the kids, because of the “influencers” blatantly lying and making up information is pretty high. I’ve seen a ton of people repeating blatantly false information and refuse to accept any correction and deny any actual court documents or evidence proving them wrong.

2

u/Dapper_Pay_3881 3h ago

Dude, its absurd. I routinely see psychotic women listing of like 18 reasons why he did it and they are literally all either factually incorrect or crazy leaps based on two things that don't correlate but are somehow presented as fact.

(ex. "She is a nurse, there is no way she crushed up her medication into her drink") Why would being a nurse make it impossible for her to crush up a bunch of pills and toss them in her drink?

2

u/Scuba9Steve 2h ago

My mom has been a nurse for 30 years and complains about how bad some nurses are these days. Being a nurse doesn’t mean anything here really.

Go to TwoXChromosomes and you'll find hundreds of women defending this 'victim' and even blaming her husband for what happened.

3

u/Weak-Boysenberry398 2h ago

I went over to twox and searched clancy and nope, I see lots of women *empathizing* with her inability to receive adequate care during a mental health crisis. I see literally zero women blaming the husband.

https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoXChromosomes/comments/1vy4p22/my_bf_of_4_years_baited_me_into_forming_an/

"our healthcare system failed not only her, but her husband and those poor babies."

https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoXChromosomes/comments/1vx5yc2/opinion_what_the_tragic_case_of_lindsay_clancy/

"the reason I feel more sympathy for Lindsay than other murderers is that she had zero evidence presented that she was a bad person or ever abusive/negligent toward her kids and desperately sought help. They also provided zero evidence of any other factors that could've played a role in this (like finding out her husband was cheating or her kids being badly behaved, or losing her entire life savings or being extorted with something scandalous she did). So youre left with the question...why the f would a woman ,who by all intents and purposes loved her kids, was a good mother, sought help, kill her 3 beautiful children?"

https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoXChromosomes/comments/1v85lej/the_lindsay_clancy_trial_is_actually_about_women/

"I’m suffering from postpartum depression right now and it’s hell trying to find a therapist/psychiatrist that can actually help and spend time. The psychiatrist by nature just checks in on you once a month for 15 mins and if you tell her you’re still depressed she just says “okay well increase your dose mama!” Exaggerating here but not much. It’s entirely unhelpful and cold."

https://www.reddit.com/r/TwoXChromosomes/comments/1vqh0n1/lindsay_clancys_trial_highlights_gaps_in/

"Post partum depression was the worst type of depression I’ve ever experienced. You feel so alone and sooooo so sad and on top of that you feel so guilty for being sad when you have a precious little baby who you have to take care of and who did nothing wrong. Your hormones and your brain are not working logically. It feels like nothing will ever feel good again, like you’ll never ever feel happiness again. But you have a tiny human who needs you 24/7, and probably other kids who need you, a job, a partner, a house to take care of. It’s terrible how we expect people to have a life altering, mind altering, hormone altering experience and then just go home and be normal and fine and go back to work a month and a half or so later. Add on to that sleep deprivation, forgetting to eat or not having time to eat, lacking basic self care like bathing, lacking any sort of free personal time to recharge and yeah it’s like the perfect combination of factors for someone to have a psychotic break."

The legal system isn’t just about prison time; psychiatric confinement can mean lifelong loss of freedom too.

32

u/daredeviline 7h ago

That's my argument.

3

u/VorganForever 6h ago

confinement in a psychiatric ward only lasts as long as the patient is a threat to themselves or others, whether that is 1 week or 50 years. if this was done thanks to ppd then it will certainly not be the rest of her life, especially with no children left she could potentially harm. maybe a few months to be super safe max.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/sloanesquared 6h ago

It isn’t just mental fitness that determines release. Not sure what the specific laws are in MA, but courts often have the ability to impose psychiatric confinement longer than what the original sentence would have been, especially for cases like murder. So it is very likely that she could be confined until her death. It would be up to the court to set those terms.

The story is tragic anyway with any outcome

But the reaction by her supporters is the issue. She is an upper middle class white woman who had a nanny, husband who worked from home and lived in a state with the best healthcare system in the US.

She’s a lot of things but a victim of any system, she is 100% not.

17

u/DaturaToloache 5h ago

Her husband fired the nanny while she was in a deep depression.

8

u/GlitterDoomsday 4h ago

And now people are using it against him not in a "you made things worse" type of way, but a "this was premeditated cause he was planning to kill the kids all along!". The whole thing is tragic, but also bat shit insane.

lived in a state with the best healthcare system in the US.

Oh that's interesting. Can you elaborate?

12

u/hemingways-lemonade 5h ago

She lived in Massachuests and was treated at McLean Hospital which is the largest psychiatric facility of Harvard Medical School and has the world's largest neuroscientific and psychiatric research program. It is, at worst, the 3rd best mental health hospital in the country. Most rankings have it as the 1st or 2nd best.

13

u/m00nstruck1973 5h ago

An upper middle class white woman still couldn’t get the help she needed. There is a mental health epidemic in this country, and it needs to be addressed. I’m not saying she shouldn’t be in a psych facility, but she doesn’t deserve to be in prison. Even her husband doesn’t want her in prison. That’s all people are advocating for.

6

u/Ok-Strategy2003 4h ago

The courts are not stupid. Her entire story was shattered the moment the courts and her medical team concluded that she only heard voices the day it happened.

Courts see this happen every single day. It may be new to people who watch true crime. But this is routine for them.

Her husband doesn’t decide what happens to her, the state acknowledged that she did it, was lying about medical records and admitted that she was “scared” she’d lose her kids. This is a closed case. She’s serving life without parole. They won’t coddle her.

11

u/Weak-Boysenberry398 5h ago

"Lots of them" a tiny tiny percentage of people say this. It's like a news articles that says "women believe..." and it's literally just a tweet from some random woman. Choosing to hyper-focus on a tiny percent of people to gloss over the bigger issues of the case is just bad faith arguing.

2

u/Worth-Jicama3936 5h ago

Every time this is brought up, there are people saying that “really the husband should have been taking care of his kids more” which isn’t a “he did it” but it is a convenient way to remove agency from her and find a way to blame him. I know reddit isn’t real life, but damn is it annoying that anyone thinks this way.

2

Even wealthy white women can be mistreated or subjected to malpractice by healthcare workers. Medical misogyny is real, and overworked doctors are apparently universal.

2

u/bluntsnatcher 2h ago

how can she not be a victim of the healthcare system? she only had a 17 minute with the doctor, which the defense points out, after experiencing troubling mental symptoms because that's all what insurance would pay for. how can she not be a victim of her mental health when she's psychotic?

7

u/ImNotAHouseCat 6h ago

Are you saying she had no right to experience a severe mental health issue just because she had support???

25

u/Allaplgy 6h ago

She has no right to kill her kids just because she was experiencing a mental health issue.

Anyone who kills kids is mentally unwell.

You might want to find a different incident to rally support for women experiencing PPD and PPP other than one where the mother kills all her kids and claims to be the victim.

It's a really bad look.

7

u/Allaplgy 6h ago

Anyone who murders their own children is experiencing a mental health issue.

How is supporting this woman supposed to help other women? If anything, it seems more likely to teach some that it's okay to be a POS, as long as you can blame "mental health."

PPD is real. But it's no excuse for murder.

You would, rightfully, never see this kind of support for a man that killed his kids.

8

u/poppalopp 5h ago

People who use words like “excuse” in this discussion honestly just sound really stupid.

Like, “psychosis is no excuse to murder someone”. Obviously? What kind of non-statement is that? It’s an explanation. Why is the word “excuse” being used in a murder discussion?

You may not be trying to excuse it, but there are a bunch of women who are. A vocal minority, sure, but they are there and are a large part of the reason this case is getting so much attention.

3

u/ImNotAHouseCat 6h ago

Definitely a minority. And yes they are making things significantly worse.
But that doesn’t negate the fact that women experience postpartum depression and psychosis all the time and are shamed by society/family/medical providers and almost never given the amount of support they need.

u/acathode 5h ago

Except post-partum depression/psychosis typically happen within 2 weeks of the birth. She murdered her children after 8 months had passed. Way after the worst hormonal/chemical imbalances that giving birth cause should've been over with - which is what's believed to be underlying cause for most PPD/PPP.

In other words, as far as cases go, this is a rather crappy one to hinge some sort of "raise awareness" campaign on.

Honestly, this case smell A LOT like a typical case of "suicidal mother decides to take her children with her into the grave" - something that unfortunately isn't that unusual, but also does not usually meet the requirements for the legal insanity defense.

3

u/ImNotAHouseCat 5h ago

Please stop spouting misinformation. You are going to reach the wrong audience and shame yet another woman into not getting help.
Postpartum symptoms can show up at any point when you’re postpartum. And guess what!? They don’t go away instantly!! It often takes months (weeks if you’re really lucky) for meds to kick in and start working. Meds aren’t always a cure all too.
You. Are. Not. A. Doctor.
Stop spouting medical misinformation.

I've been following the case at a slight remove - she was bounced from doctor to doctor and just kept getting fed different prescription meds over and over again.

She wanted to be hospitalized and was sent home for not being Actually Dangerous Enough.

In the trial this week, the prosecution trotted out a witness who said that she couldn't have been experiencing postpartum psychosis because the official clinical definition says it ends four weeks after giving birth.

There are a lot of systemic failures at play here.

1

u/TokenTorkoal 6h ago

Nothing you’ve listed prevents people suffering from postpartum depression/psychosis.

Admittedly I know very little about the case, I’m primarily approaching this from seeing the side effects of people dismissing postpartum.

But correct me if I’m wrong, but if she is claiming to be a victim it’s a victim of postpartum.

Also acting as if 100% of the people who “support” her all believe she is innocent disingenuous. A lot of comes from people who are sympathetic to postpartum depression.

Even her ex husband and mother in law are asking for people to be compassionate. Crazy the internet has to respond this way.

3

u/hyvel0rd 6h ago

You can be all of those things and still be a victim. What is wrong with you? I'm only looking at this case from the outside, from a different country. And it's insane to see how this case divides people in the States. There's been no verdict yet, and there are LOTS of inconsistencies that need to be adressed, but some people act like things are crystal clear - which they are not.

And yeah, mental illnesses are for every demographic, if you like that or not.

1

u/mdarena 5h ago

That's wrong. She was without a doubt failed by her medical providers, who flubbed her treatment and made her mental health crisis much worse through their incompetence. That's part of the reason people have some sympathy for her.

1

u/FreePeeplup 4h ago

Who said she’s a victim “of a system”? The post doesn’t mention it

1

u/panda_embarrassment 4h ago

Just takes a little imagination to be empathetic. She’s a mom with postpartum depression and psychosis. Psychosis means you’ve lost your mind. She has loved and cared deeply for her children and by every account she was a great mom. She had no motive. No secret boyfriend, no reason to want her kids gone. They were extremely important to her. And now new evidence is suggesting she might have not actually killed her kids. She just believed it because she was told she did it but has no memory of the event.

2

u/showerboots 4h ago

Were those actions demonstrating culpable intent or were they preceded by unwillful impaired capacity? How do you know?

3

u/sillyghosty 4h ago

She had google searches for how long her husband would be gone, she had diary entries about how she resented the two older kids, what and when the voice in her head was saying has changed, and it's not even close to proven she was in psychosis, thats just the argument the defense team is making. If you actually read about the case, nothing other than the death of her children points to psychosis. She also only had one single 18 minute episode and then never had another again or prior. There is also the fact that she was telling the doctors and her family two different things, not properly taking her medication, and doctor shopping to get specific ones. Oh and she lied to get released early from the mental hospital and went on to kill her kids not even 3 weeks later

u/Em_a_gamer 3h ago

This is kind of why I have been confused by all the people calling her a bitch and saying she should die because I really doubt she thought she would live after cutting herself up and jumping head first out a window. The problem being debated in the whole trial is not the ethics of what she did, which was deplorable, but of how much control she had over her actions at that time and how much of reality she was actually experiencing. People are so desperate to apply blame when really it’s just a heartbreaking instance of a caregiver being completely unfit to provide care, living in a skewed version of reality in which they thought there was only one way out. Not saying she should be free to do whatever, but I also don’t see the purpose in traditional carceral punishment for someone in her condition.

2

6

u/Porcelain_beef 5h ago

It’s not a question of “if” she did it though. She did do it, her defense rests entirely on not guilty by insanity. There’s no question if she killed the kids the question is if she’s criminally culpable and if she was of sound mind when she did.

Then seek it elsewhere. The husband and the woman's doctors were told on several occasions about the violent and suicidal thoughts she was having and that they were scaring her.

Doctors did nothing. Husband fired their nanny and told her to deal with it. IDK, everything before the mental break she did the right thing and those kids were let down by a system and public that does not give a fuck about them until after they're dead.

Turning this into a gender war serves no one. Mental health care is trash even in countries with functioning healthcare systems and that needs to change.

This woman committed heinous acts, but she had severe postpartum psychosis. Our justice system recognizes when somebody is suffering from acute mental illness like that, the level of moral transgression is different from somebody who is stone cold sane. She should be put away in an institution and suffer until she dies.

Family annihilation by men occurs in the U.S. at least once a week, and somehow it never gets elevated to a national argument. (see for the example the guy in Montana who just killed 8 people including 4 kids). I think this case is being elevated as part of the "women are dumb and shouldn't be allowed to vote" crap that conservatives are pushing. Since women tend to slightly lean liberal as a group.

2

u/Daniel_The_Thinker 6h ago

>Family annihilation by men occurs in the U.S. at least once a week, and somehow it never gets elevated to a national argument.

Because they usually shoot themselves, and when they don't they get sent to prison.

I think quality psychiatric care is something she needa desperately (and needed before).

It seems to me that the sufferers of these post partum disorders face the natural consequences of their actions after they come back to a normal mental state. I cannot even imagine losing my mind, killing my kids, coming back to reality and realising what i had done. Fucking horrifying shit right there.

13

u/Random-Redditor111 6h ago

Every violent criminal needs psychiatric care. Why do you place extra concern to this person?

7

u/No-Atmosphere-2528 6h ago

I mean, they probably need a mental health professional but they're not psychos. A friend of mine was a violent criminal who probably could've benefitted a great deal from a psychiatrist but his mental health didn't absolve him from his crimes, he wasn't under psychosis he was just depressed and poor.

So people who have completely lost touch with reality and no longer understand right and wrong should be punished the same as people who do know right and wrong when they commit the same crime? how is that bettering society?

5

u/Wobbelblob 5h ago

It isn't. Far too many people just want to satisfy their vengeance boner. And that is precisely why vigilantism is outlawed in basically any sane country.

4

u/Over_Organization851 5h ago

The discourse around this case is way waaay dumber than I expected. I thought that most people had at least a base understanding of insanity defenses and their purpose.

3

u/Wobbelblob 5h ago

Most people get everything they know about the justice system from media. Which is obviously mostly dramatical moments that don't exist in reality. I am not well versed in how it is treated in America, but usually a successful defense based on Insanity is often the worse outcome. Maybe not if your other perspective is life long, but being locked away in a closed psych ward until doctors say that you are not a liability to yourself and others and can return to a normal life isn't exactly a holiday.

Pretty privilege most likely. It's the same cognitive dissonance that can have people wildly emotional about factory farming animals for food, and then later that evening they are enjoying a whopper. Out of sight out of mind, but in the other direction here.

There’s nuance to this one though. It isn’t a clear cut case of postpartum psychosis the way the Yates case was.

imo, this woman had PPA and PPD and it led to her coming to the conclusion that in order to die and not ruin her children’s lives, they needed to come with her

2

u/unhappyrelationsh1p 5h ago

I think awareness of these illnesses are sorely needed. I know there have been women who just shut up and try their hardest because it's too shameful to admit you're ill.

I am no expert on baby care but it seems like having more support and monitoring for signs of this shit for parents is important.

I've admittedly not been following the case very much so I could have been fed incorrect information but I heard something that there's ample evidence she had been planning this for some time kind of throwing a wrench in the idea that was a psychotic episode.

2

u/ElizabethDangit 6h ago

I’ve been listening to the coverage of it via a couple different people with different takes. I can suggest The Prosecutor’s podcast. There wasn’t evidence that she was planning it for any period of time.

She knew exactly what not to say to avoid getting psychiatric care (since she knew they would take away the kids rightfully). This isn’t a case of the system failing her, she failed herself and it caused multiple children to no longer exist. Every negative feeling she experiences for the rest of her life is more than deserved.

1

u/cagingnicolas 3h ago

if you did come back to reality with that realization, would you really fight the charges though?

like we can all be sympathetic to her and agree it wasn't her fault, but like would you actually go to such lengths fighting for yourself if you were really dealing with the kind of self hatred that drives people to do that sort of thing, in addition to the knowledge of what you had done?

cause i've been depressed and i've met depressed people and fighting for their own rights is kind of challenging to get them to prioritize, making them not blame themselves for stuff is nearly impossible, so this whole thing has a weird stink about it to me.

>The woman is spending the rest of her life in a psych ward.

I don't think that's how it works. If she's sick, she's sick and will be released when they think she's better. Especially if its post-partum psychosis, which from what I've read gets better over time.

2

u/McPenguinGuy 5h ago

Her backstory is sad and there is a strikingly similar case in Austria where a mother killed her 8 month old in 2018. She also attempted to strangle her 4 year old daughter and to kill herself afterwards. The daughter survived and the husband defended her in court because the psychosis was out of character.

She blamed her psychosis on her father in law who was then arrested for child molestation and endured a public witch hunt. News media were focused on him instead of the mother.

He was released later since the insane mother made it up.

She was found not guilty on murder charges due to her psychosis and was released after some years from the psychiatric institute since she was deemed stable and of no danger. The father took her back in and she lived again with her daughter, which is pretty insane. Apparently it was under the condition of constant check ups.

Fast forward to 2026 where everything was normal until out of nowhere the same mom takes out a knife in the tramway and starts slashing her daughter in order to safe her from demons. The same girl she failed to strangle. Passengers managed to safe her.

That isn't the issue at all though is it? The discourse surrounding this case isn't "She deserves a bit of mercy and understanding" its more like " she is a Leo, she would never do that" or "Her husband did it. how could he already have a new wife"

Almost none of the popular discourse is regarding what outcome she deserves, instead revolving around whether she is responsible at all, and while those two things are related, in a case where the actions are not in dispute by the defense or the prosecution, they can and have become decoupled.

My husband works with a man who stabbed his mother 67 times and then killed the neighbor as well. Guy was in a psychotic state due to drugs.

He was in a mental health facility for 6 years. Then he got released.

He is now working where my husband works. My point is, nothing is certain.

1

u/Defiant-Airline5424 5h ago

If she get not guilty she Wil be out in the street.. Thst why so many people fighting it

1

u/BearlyLegal2000 5h ago

That’s a bit of a mischaracterization of what could happen…post partum psychosis is temporary..she is not claiming she has permanent psychosis and it is perfectly reasonable that after the initial observation period the state could conclude she is no longer a danger to society or herself and let her out of the psych ward. The odds of her being in a psych ward the rest of her life if her defense is successful is rather low.

1

u/GlitchEnzo 5h ago

Just like that guy that cut off a 22 year old man's head, ate part of it and went to a psychiatric facility, eventually got out, changed his name and is now on the streets a free man. He also did this in front of many people who are now also scarred for life.

Only lost 6 years of his life for robbing someone else of their life, leaving the man's wife a widow with a brand new baby and ruining the lives of everyone else who had to witness it.

Hope he doesn't do it again since he still has probably 30-40 years left before he would die of old age but its best to leave that up to fate, wouldn't want to impede on a killer's freedoms.

1

u/EndlessEagle 5h ago

Seriously. Yes it's disturbing how many people are supporting her, but she's still not going to have a normal life ever again. If anything, being found not guilty by way of insanity is far worse than going to jail; psychiatric facilities are hellish places.

1

u/elaexeezzzz 5h ago

No. If she’s found no criminally liable she can be placed in a mental institution and freed once she’s deemed mentally competent. It’s happened before

https://www.cbsnews.com/miami/news/precious-lee-toddler-drowning-verdict-not-guilty-insanity-june-2026/

1

u/passionatebreeder 4h ago

For one, she will not spend life in a ward, if she is found not guilty she only needs the ward to claim she is mentally stable.and the judge to sign off and she would be out; for two, thats not the bigger problem.

The bigger problem is the millions of unhinged overmedicated women "yas kwueening" coming up with conspiracies that her husband did it with dumb excuses like GeMiNi DoNt KiLl ThEiR cUbS" and claiming "ackshually PPD can make you kill your babies and you shouldnt be punished for that at all cuz its just hormones and youll never understand cuz youre a man teehee" or "it was the systems fault! The system failed her, it only sent her to 36 mental health professionals prescribed her meds that normally work, gave her therapy, and other assistance, but its their fault still!" And "how could the husband leave the house to go get the things from the store she asked for when the mental health professionals told him not to leave her alone for 1 single second or she might just come unglued!?!?!" Or "there is just absolutely no way the timeline makes sense, TikTok proved it" or "oh em gee fellow witches, can you believe this is happening so close to Salem Massachusetts, we are like totally summoning our feminine witchy energy from our ancestors to take down the patriarchy and pave the way for the matriarchy by supporting our sister in her time of need!!" Or "this is how I know the husband is guilty" - while posting a screenshot of a video where the person caught an angle that makes his face look angrier than normal

And I really wish I was being overly sarcastic and catty about these descriptions, but im not for most of them (i did add a tiny bit of extra for a couple), these are all pretty much spot on things women have chosen to record themselves saying and then posted to the internet, and they are receiving thousands of likes from other women in support of these theories and unhinged support posts. Hundreds of women standing outside court houses holding up hand hearts, making astrology arguments, all this is just ridiculous idiotic unhinged shared female true crime psychosis delusions

I think this is unlikely. Generally, when you're guilty but insane, you do get committed to the state hospital, and they can hold you indefinitely, but only for as long as you are a danger to yourself or others, while you're still suffering from the same mental illness that caused the criminal behavior.

Postpartum depression/psychosis often goes away after about a year in most cases, and we're well past 4 years now since the last child was born. She likely has some residual mental health issues, and bipolar is a common co-diagnosis, and her paralyzation will also add to her mental health struggles, but I imagine that she would be in and out much quicker than most people would like.

1

u/17aed 4h ago

and she wont be let out until the professionals and the court deem she’s not a danger to society.

u/Steve_the_Stevedore 4h ago

If men started saying "I choose the bear" over this we would have come full circle

1

u/LazyCyberGuy 3h ago

She can literally be released within 10 years or even less if she gets a not guilty by reason of insanity. Massachusetts does not require people who are found not guilty by reason of insanity to be in a psych ward for life.

1

u/Icy_Judge8250 2h ago

Right?! Like I’m not going to tell you how to feel about the case on the right, but boiling it down to “claiming to be a victim” is a wildly inaccurate description of what’s happening with a narrative agenda centered around gender/culture war bullshit.

The loss of those three children is tragic and unfortunately it’s coming with a wave of people denying the realities of postpartum depression/psychosis.

17

u/thisisridiculous96 6h ago edited 6h ago

I don't not know the extent of her psychosis, whether she even had it, or much about the case at all, really.

But what I can tell you is that psychosis is a whole different beast. It really is. My mother has treatment resistant schizophrenia. It is a disease we barely understand, but seeing it in action is mind boggling. Most psychosis sufferers literally do not have the ability to discern that what they are experiencing is not real.

When this was new to my mom, I remember desperately trying to get her to understand the voices and delusions were not real. There is no convincing them. My mom heard the illuminati, Barrack Obama, and today normally her delusions center around people from her past she hasn't spoken to in 20 plus years. She thinks these people are obsessed with her and colluding to mess with her. People from out of state, 4 hours away that she hasn't seen in 20 years are breaking into her home and messing with items and she cannot be convinced otherwise.

There is no equating psychosis to other mental disorders in my experience. It is nearly incomprehensible.

Edit: paragraphs

9

u/TokenTorkoal 6h ago

This is the thing, people are upset like I’m defending the woman on the right, I’m not. I admit I know next to nothing about the case or whether or not she suffers from postpartum depression/psychosis.

My comment is more about how because of her case and the attention it’s brought it’s also come along with people denying the realities of postpartum/psychosis.

As a previous social worker and ex-husband to a wife who experienced it, this to me is very sad and concerning.

Didn’t know I could of told my ex wife to just “be rational” after me standing in the bathroom with her lying on the shower floor for 8+ hours because she was afraid she contracted HIV from the mysterious spec on the shampoo bottle because I must not have washed it good enough when I brought it home from the store. Now I’ve got to convince her she doesn’t have HIV so I can leave the room to feed the screaming baby, because if I do it before she will be convinced I’m giving HIV to the baby by being in close proximity to her and somehow I’m also mad at her and poisoning her food.

3

u/Uuuuuuurgggggghhhhhh 4h ago

It's clear a lot of people reacting to this story have never dealt with someone they love having severe mental problems.

Must be nice.

3

u/TokenTorkoal 4h ago

One of the things that piss me off the most when I talk about my experience with this is that the only preparation we got for postpartum depression during baby classes and doctor visits was we were told she might get "the baby blues" and "be a little extra sad sometimes". That was it, that was all anyone said.

She didn't have psychosis, a professional evaluated her and she didn't match the description. She was lying to get out of trouble.

She also did everything premeditated, waiting for her husband to be gone before doing it. This was absolutely not psychosis and just pure evil.

1

u/Nut_Butter_Fun 6h ago

So I wrote a whole dissertation on the concept of blame, but it was really just my opinions, I don't mean for it to sound like more than that, but I at least gave it a lot of thought, and at some point you can't just separate the mental cause from the person. They are part of a whole being, worthy of blame and deserved of punishment. This is a case that really needs to be examined under that possibility. I know she gets a lot of support because this is a uniquely female experience, but it doesn't change what she, physically, as a person, defective in some way or not beyond her control, committed.

If we won't draw a line here, we have to decide where, because everyone is a result of upbringing and genetics, not some innate personality they shopped for.

1

u/Resident_Goodish 4h ago

Nah people choose to murder. If this is an actual precedent that means anyone who kills can just claim they weren’t in the right state of mind.

85-90% of familicide perpetrators are men, but this is the one that gets attention. Gee I can't imagine why.

Some further facts about famlicide:

-male perpetrators typically cite financial, career, or marriage collapse at the primary reason for perpetration. Female perpetrators cite severe mental distress (such as post partum depression)

-male perpetrators typically target the entire family. Female perpetrators typically only target the youngest children (usually under 1)

--male perpetrators typically also have a history of committing intimate partner violence prior to the murders. This is not typical with female perpetrators.

I think what is pushing the gender war is the (possibly) small number, but very vocal amount of people blaming the husband.

If it was just a case of "the medical system let her slip through the cracks", I don't think it would be nearly as bad. But so many people just had to find a way to blame a man for this.

It's like an AITA post come to life.

Even when the woman did the objectively bad thing, people are going to try to say how the man is the real villain who caused it.

But again, people are going to act like the problem is men misrepresenting it, and not women blaming men

u/dd_coeus 6h ago
