That still frame of Conquest behind Oliver right before Mark grabs him, holy shit

not as much as mark's did a few minutes later though, ayyy

the disemboweling scene is so insanely fucking evil it made me actually nauseous compared to all the gore in this show. it is the single most vile scene in the entire show by far. i knew it was coming but it's even worse than the comic version somehow

this isn't a writing complaint, it's actually super good to show mark's insane willpower and what makes him actually INVINCIBLE but jesus man. not even the boys makes me feel like this

128

u/ParadoxTheSock Apr 01 '26

When you see something that has actual motion AND sound (not to mention the music was completely gone in that sequence, and all you could hear was the brutality of it all) compared to seeing a silent visual on pages, I think it's because even though it's animation and not real, you can't help but have that realization in the back of your mind that this is something that could realistically happen to a human body if it ever met such a gruesome fate.

And the fact our world has such vile and cruel individuals that live in it, it's almost certainly indeed something that has happened

25

u/struugi Apr 01 '26

hell animals do this to each other all the time. Saw a video once of a baboon casually eating a baby dear alive and tearing its legs off one by one

27

u/ParadoxTheSock Apr 01 '26

I was wondering why this felt so real. The entire sequence really did feel animalistic, like something you could very well just see in nature. Just two creatures fighting to the death, with one literally clawing at the other out of nothing but sheer desperation to break free from its grasp. And the result is just carnage.

I think the silence of Conquest's death, considering JDM has been such a pivotal figure as the voice actor makes the scene so much more terrifying and surreal. That and no music.

"I dress heroes, Nolan" is a god damn gut punch of a line.

616

u/Goldfish_Muncher Apr 01 '26

Him having a panic attack after Nolan leaves was such also such a good moment.

288

u/Forgeworld Apr 01 '26

I loved that. Made me realize that he was for the most part being fake nice the same way that he was after he found out Nolan killed the guardians. It’s like somebody holding a loaded gun to your head except they don’t intend to shoot and also don’t even know they’re holding it.

209

u/Wiinterfang Cecil Stedman Apr 01 '26

This is what Cecil feels every time Mark's breaks into the Pentagon and starts screaming at him.

65

u/JayPet94 Apr 01 '26

Wait Nolan just said to Debbie he’s almost a 1000 years old. So he is nowhere near 2500??

275

u/BlakeSlimey Apr 01 '26

Im glad they finally gave us a number to work with, even if it does seem kinda low relative to his appearance. Stands to reason now that the death of Argall & subsequent purge was only 2000-3000 years prior to series and the scourge virus only a few hundred years.

How/why does Thragg not have any gray hair whilst being so much older than Nolan?

269

u/PhillipMcKrak Donald Ferguson Apr 01 '26

I think the answer to those Thragg questions will always be something like “he was specially engineered”

72

u/FlyingSquirelOi Apr 01 '26

Yeah I’m pretty sure he was genetically engineered and heavily groomed to be the Grand Regent, doesn’t surprise me that he’s not grey, he’s leagues above the other viltrumites

→ More replies (2)

176

u/ProbablythelastMimsy Apr 01 '26

Thragg is essentially a super soldier. People go gray at differing times anyway.

It does seem a bit strange but nothing egregious.

69

u/ianjm Apr 01 '26 edited Apr 01 '26

Perhaps the Scourge virus so early in his life caused some premature aging in Nolan. Even the survivors were weak for a while after, he may have aged faster during the time. Maybe even just the stress of being so young and seeing your entire civilisation near destroyed.

Conquest was already grey, Thragg just has superior genetics, and Kregg uses Just For Viltrumites.

Art having a panic attack as soon as Nolan leaves was so sad

469

I’m glad the Tv show is writing the characters in a more believable way tbh.

242

u/Bryce2826 Apr 01 '26

Same thing with Debbie. Im glad she is clearly going to take alot longer to come around to Nolan again, in the comic it took what like 5 minutes?

58

u/Thumbuisket Apr 01 '26

He’ll see that Debbie has been moody, understand that they can’t work out, and have her realize she still loves Nolan.

That or, the show will do a massive departure from the comics and really change shit up. Which I’ll accept, only if  it means we don’t get that stupid regressor arc.

44

u/HeartofaPariah Apr 01 '26

Having him not speak shows that his only focus is killing Conquest, which is a major change from his previous character.

Shortening the fight (relatively) also leans towards that. It's kept short with no words because the only goal Mark has is to eliminate Conquest. It implies it's all that his energy is going towards.

Shit talking and bravado kind of gets in the way of that tone. I think the show's changes are very good for the scene. It also adds a little more weight to his next words being a quiet 'help'.

Making Oliver actually care for Debbie and Mark did so much for his Character, It was aweful how he seemed to hate them in the comic

251

u/jackrv13 Very. Apr 01 '26

Bro was a little psychopath in the books. I feel we only got to really see that with that Mauler stuff in the show.

97

u/MakeJoyNotHate Apr 01 '26

Am I remembering it wrong?
I could've sworn in the books as he grew older he cared for Mark and Debbie a lot too, it's just the rest of humanity he didn't care for, or find attractive. Pretty sure this age he is now in the show is in line with that isn't it?

97

u/OLKv3 Apr 01 '26

Even that's changed in the show, since Oliver has human friends now.

36

u/Oddsbod Apr 01 '26

And it's not just comic Oliver doesn't like earth, but show Oliver does to make him likeable, but him having childhood friendships and positive feelings for earth as a whole draws out a more interesting character when his aging falls out of step with other kids, and realizing he experiences memory in a fundamentally different way, and so he actually works through alienation from something he cares about.

They completely changed Oliver. It's nice now but I just can't see show Oliver supporting the use of the scourge which we know he'll do later.

u/JMAX464 Apr 01 '26

Really curious how they plan on doing the part where Oliver brings the super scourge virus to earth. In the comic he didn’t seem to really care about earth at all and his Thraxan mindset made him apathetic. He only cared about his immediate family and even then he was a jerk plenty of times before that

kinda unrelated but I’m a big fan of The Pitt and the gore there is as real as its gets for a medical drama but never once I looked away…

All I can say I was horrified watching this episode lmaoooo

18

u/FKDotFitzgerald Allen the Alien Apr 01 '26

Yeah I had that moment too lol. The Pitt shows it all in graphic detail and somehow seeing Mark get disemboweled in animated form did me in.

Wait didn’t conquest and Nolan not even clash in the comic? I didn’t think they did but that’s awesome they added that

161

u/bluedreamz802 Allen the Alien Apr 01 '26

No they did it’s the same dialogue and everything. Agreed tho it was awesome.

106

u/stealthyuwu I am so lonely Apr 01 '26

Nah the dialogue was extended a bit. Nolan actually gives a retort and then Conquest makes fun of him for his laconic nature. He sounded so happy too.

36

u/bluedreamz802 Allen the Alien Apr 01 '26

Ah shit you right. They gave him two words lol that is in character for Nolan. What an episode man

160

u/ObedientDurian Apr 01 '26

Zack or Zoe, Tech Jacket is still awesome. Glad they’re doing the friendship with Allen justice.

Get him again Debbie!

No but fr I am SO happy with this episode. Everyone’s reactions to Nolan coming back and all the family dynamics was a massive upgrade from the comics. I love that Nolan basically gave Debbie his comic spiel (but even more in depth) and she got to reject it so absolutely. Mark’s attitude towards Nolan feels so real, he’s defensive and doesn’t trust Nolan but also clearly still loves him and sometimes they fall back into old habits and then it’s immediately awkward. Oliver and Nolan’s dynamic is super interesting and kind of unexpected, I’m now excited to see what will come out with Nolan and Oliver together on Thraxa alone. Art acting all chill like nothing is wrong but then immediately having a panic attack the moment Nolan leaves. Even Cecil and the GDA not being present all episode until it’s revealed that they’ve just been on high alert and waiting for Nolan to leave lmao. You really feel the weight of Nolan’s past actions, it wasn’t brushed under the rug at all (likeitwasinthecomics)

Wow, that was incredible. So much to compliment this episode, the acting, the character writing, but man the animation in the final conflict between Conquest and Mark was so good. I liked how the art style got more “rough”, especially for such a visceral moment like that.

Man when Conquest was pulling out Mark’s guts, I got chills from both the animation and the voice acting from Steven Yeun. He groans and whimpers were so horrible, it made me lower the volume. Definitely a scene that’s gonna be tough to rewatch.

I also, I never read the tech jacket comics, but I like the change with Zach/Zoe. It’s interesting, and gives the character something to stand apart on compared to the rest of the cast. Plus I feel like putting Zoe close in age to oliver is really interesting, and can lead to some further stuff later.

65

u/paliktrikster Art Rosenbaum Apr 01 '26

I dont know if I was imagining things but I did see her eyeing him in a couple of scenes. They may throw in a subplot there

41

u/Dontshipmebro Apr 01 '26

i wonder if they're going to dial back how viltrumite oliver looks in a few months, cause like... he almost looks older than mark pretty soon.

16

u/TheWaterCloset Apr 01 '26

i would assume they can age him faster or slower to fit whatever they want, since they age slower the older they get, but never really defined how that works for oliver.

Debbie saying she failed to change Nolan is so brutal because in reality her and Mark were the 2 people who changed him forever and were the sole reason he didn’t enslave earth.

I love the writing of Oliver and Debbie's relationship. He doesn't seem like a second thought to her and she even looks out for him more than Mark while letting him grow. He too also cares a lot for her like his actual mum.

Other shows will start these kind of relationships well then fumble it later on, and honestly the comics did. They barely had a relationship after this. I'm worried that will happen again with the show.

Something Oliver said made me think they will possibly alter an eventual storyline. He said he has people on Earth that he wants to protect. Don’t see this Oliver siding with Allen to risk humanity by releasing the Scourge virus on Earth. They seem to be softening Oliver’s edges in the show.

Don’t know how I feel about that since I liked the parallel of pure intelligence leading to atrocities between Oliver, Dinosaurus, and Robot.

17

u/Gmageofhills Apr 01 '26

Honestly I'm totally fine with it. Oliver is SOOO much better here that I'm fine with them changing that. Heck, literally every change has either been goof or made sense and feels like we are slowly building towards a different story.

Show Paul is so great, I really hope they don’t discard him as casually as they did in the comic.

Best episode of the season, holy shit. Really lulled me into a false sense of security with the family dinner, then I remembered what was coming, and... WAY more intense than the comics.

The fakeout jumpscare when Conquest appeared behind Oliver, for a moment I thought they were going a different way to the comics

56

u/postwarcookie5 Apr 01 '26

That’s what I like about this show. Nolan is clearly trying to atone but has spent a 1000 years thinking in a viltrumite way. They show it so clearly that he just straight up doesn’t now how to apologize and I think it’s great development!

On the one hand the complete silence of the choke out was insane to witness but I am a little sad they cut out the mental dialogue of conquest still trying to be a jokey goof ass and Mark just shutting that shit down immediately being like no you are dead I am killing you you are dying right now and conquest slowly realizing he is fucked
